  • Ex-Ghana star says Italian better than Guardiola
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Boateng spent half a season playing under De Zerbi at Sassuolo in 2018-19. He played 15 times under the Italian manager and scored five goals before he was loaned to Barcelona. The ex-Ghana international, who has now retired, has played for the likes of Jurgen Klopp, Massimiliano Allegri and Ernesto Valverde. While he did not experience life under Guardiola's leadership, he is confident De Zerbi is a better boss.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

De Zerbi has risen to prominence thanks to his work at Sassuolo, Shakhtar and Brighton. He replaced Graham Potter at the helm of Brighton in 2022 and guided the club to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League in his first season and they currently sit eighth in the table. Guardiola, meanwhile, has taken City back to the top of the English top-flight after leading them to the European and domestic treble last term.

  • WHAT KEVIN-PRINCE BOATENG SAID

Boateng told : "If I had De Zerbi 10-12 years ago, football would’ve been different. I think he will be the best coach of the next 20-30 years. He has been able to improve every single player he worked with, from the understudy goalkeeper to the striker. I worked with him when I was 32 years old and I felt stronger than I’ve ever been. De Zerbi makes you feel really involved, he knew how to coddle me when I needed it, to motivate me when I needed that. He really looks after the human rapport aspect of management and that is fundamental."

He added: "Is De Zerbi better than Guardiola? I say yes."

    WHAT NEXT FOR DE ZERBI?

De Zerbi's Brighton team have not won any of their last five matches in the Premier League and they will hope to turn that form around when they visit Nottingham Forest on November 25. They will then take on AEK Athens in the Europa League with the aim of securing their place in the knockout rounds of the competition.

Meet Lionel Messi's new team-mates: Facundo Farias and Inter Miami's latest raft of new signings

The club has swung big by bringing in a trio of ex-Barcelona stars, but the younger additions could be just as vital

It's been a summer of change at Inter Miami, to say the least. If you know even the slightest bit about sports in general, you'll know that Lionel Messi has arrived in MLS, bringing with him a level of attention never before seen in American soccer. Not even David Beckham captured the imagination quite like Messi, who, in only two games, has already put his stamp on his new team.

Messi, though, isn't the only addition to Miami's team this summer. He's the biggest, for sure, and certainly the most important but, with the club languishing in last place in the Eastern Conference, Inter Miami have brought in a series of new signings.

From familiar faces to rising stars, Miami has only just begun to fill out its roster, giving Messi plenty of different players to work with as he looks to dominate in MLS. But who are the club's summer signings and what position should we expect them to take on the field for Inter Miami? GOAL takes a look…

GettyLionel Messi

We'll start with the main man himself: Messi. The Argentine needs no introduction, so we won't waste time listing out his many accolades. But, while there may not be a need to get into Messi's past, it is worth discussing both the present and the future.

In Miami, Gerardo 'Tata' Martino will no doubt look to use Messi in a variety of ways. He can either play on the right-hand side, much as he has for most of his career, or he could be deployed centrally as a No.10. No matter where he plays, he won't need to do much defending. No, for Messi, the mandate is clear: go out and get us goals.

It didn't take long to do just that, as he scored three and assisted two more in his first game-and-a-half in Inter Miami pink.

AdvertisementGettySergio Busquets

Another familiar face, Busquets, like Messi, already has an untouchable legacy. The ex-Barcelona star is among the best midfielders of his generation, having run the middle of the field for both club and country for over a decade. Few players in the history of the game have had a better pure understanding of the sport than Busquets, whose tactical knowledge and positioning is second to none.

That knowledge will buy him a few extra years as he inevitably slows down physically, although he'll certainly need some runners next to him in the midfield. He'll be deployed as a No.6 , either by himself or with another, as he looks to dictate the game from a deeper position.

The early results have been good, as Busquets' technical skill has been on full display as he's duelled with Atlanta United and Cruz Azul, taking advantage of the increased space and time compared to what he's seen in the highest levels of the game.

Getty ImagesJordi Alba

Only one more Barcelona star, we promise. Alba, like his long-time team-mates, was among the best in his position for a long time, holding down that left-hand side at the Camp Nou for years. He's certainly slowed down a bit but, in a league that doesn't place much of an emphasis on big-money full-backs, he'll instantly be right there as the best in MLS.

The Spanish star will take up a spot on that left flank, with U.S. men's national team veteran DeAndre Yedlin on the opposite side of the defense. In front of Alba will likely be the next player on this list, a young future star who will look to benefit from all of the superstar talent around him…

GettyFacundo Farias

What a situation Farias is walking into. The 20-year-old Argentinian starlet will now be learning from the very best as he looks to take the next step on his own path to the top.

The winger was signed for a reported $5 million transfer fee with potential incentives, as Inter Miami secured the signing of one of the top young stars in Argentina. He scored 16 goals with nine assists during his time with Colon, having joined the first team in 2019. And he already has three goals in eight appearances in the Copa Libertadores, having proven he can play at the highest levels in South America.

Farias had previously been linked with both Boca Juniors and River Plate, having drawn comparisons with Carlos Tevez, but a knee injury in 2022 dashed any hopes of a move to one of the giants. Instead, he'll now play with the biggest giant of Argentine soccer in Messi, and he'll almost certainly occypy the left flank opposite the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner on the right.

The evolution of Erling Haaland's football boots

If there's one brand Haaland has been a fan of over the years, it's been Nike ✔️

Erling Haaland has more goals at the same age than both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo did, and his debut season in the Premier League will give us a strong indication of how that career trajectory is likely to continue. He’s also currently without a boot deal, having worn both Nike and adidas in recent months, and whoever he chooses to sign with permanently will undoubtedly dream up some inventive advertising campaigns using the Norwegian.

Since he broke through at Molde, the 22-year-old has favoured Nike. A Mercurial faithful, he’s worn several different styles and had various special commemorative editions made.

Haaland made his Norway u16 debut in 2016 wearing Mercurial Vapour 10s in a fresh mango colourway from the Metal Flash pack. Since making his debut for the full senior side in 2019, he's scored 20 goals in 21 games. Terrifying.

Haaland was crowned with the Golden Boy award in 2020, after his blistering performances for Dortmund during the 2019-20 season, where he scored 28 goals and made seven assists. Nike designed a special pair of the Mercurial Vapor 13s after he received the award, in a sleek black and gold colourway, which he debuted in January 2021 after he came back from a torn muscle injury.

At the beginning of the 2020-21 season, Haaland wore the Nike Superfly 7s. This was a season where he would have all eyes on him after becoming the Bundesliga's player of the season and the top goalscorer in the Champions League with ten goals. The Mercurial's laser orange and white colourway certainly popped against the Dortmund jersey.

No Brasileirão, ele disputou apenas seis atuações.

Lancashire attack excels to quell Durham

Lancashire moved above hosts Durham into fourth place in the NatWest T20 Blast North Group after sealing a six-wicket victory at Chester-le-Street

Freddie Wilde25-Jun-2015
ScorecardThis match will be forgotten in two weeks, perhaps even in two days, some may have forgotten it already. Another T20. A T20 in cold, wet, dark Durham on a Thursday. But there was much to be savoured in this encounter between two teams desperate for a win.Too often we are told that T20 is the most inferior of cricket’s three formats: uncouth and brash it requires few and basic skills, is unsubtle and vacuous, but there was little evidence of such characteristics in a genuinely fascinating, high-skilled match. The first ball of Durham’s innings, struck for four, and in fact, the first six overs, blitzed for 61 and involving a pinch-hitter, suggested an evening of runs, but under moody skies the cricket that followed was tight, tense, and hard-fought. Runs were hard to come by and those who did succeed – Ashwell Prince and Mark Stoneman being the two batsmen to score more than 26 – did so in enjoyably contrasting methods. This was a pitch, with uneven pace, bounce and seam, on which no batsman ever really seemed at ease. In future we will not, but perhaps we should, ask of batsmen who score runs around the world; ‘but can he do it on a cold Thursday night in Durham?’Stoneman had joy in a way that no other batsman did. He began Durham’s Powerplay with what was in hindsight absurd aggression. Striking six fours and a six he propelled Durham through to 61 for 3 after six overs and 93 for 3 after ten. But Stoneman was an island of attack in amongst a sea of attrition. After the Powerplay Durham hit just three boundaries and hit none in the final 57 balls of the innings. While the scoreboard may show that Lancashire’s seamers took the majority of the wickets – Kyle Jarvis with 3 for 24 and James Faulkner 3 for 27 – it was the spinners who laid the foundations for their success. In fact, perhaps spinners is not the right word – slow bowlers would be better. There was very little spin on offer, so much so that Steven Croft was at one point bowling little more than split-finger, leg-cutting drifters. But they were hugely effective. Stephan Parry and Aaron Lilley bowled more conventionally, but again with little turn available it was the canny changes of pace, shifts in line and clever use of flight and angles that unsettled Durham’s batsmen who struggled for timing and fluency.Lancashire’s slow trio bowled 11 overs between them for just 61 runs, pulling Durham back from a strong start to choke the second half of their innings in which they scored just 48 for 7.Although Durham’s 141 felt under-par given their superb start, when Lancashire began their run-chase it was unclear whether they had bowled brilliantly or whether conditions had changed markedly.Indeed although Lancashire always seemed in charge the chase was never easy. A lively 17-ball 26, a microcosm of modern batsmanship, from Karl Brown got Lancashire ahead of the rate, but just as it had for Durham, taking pace off the ball took wickets and stifled Lancashire’s run-scoring.But as long as Prince was at the crease, there was a sense of assurance to Lancashire’s batting. He was dropped twice but manipulated the field expertly and picked off the occasional bad balls to score an excellent fifty. But against tight bowling it was not so much run-scoring as it was run-acquirement. Well that was at least until James Faulkner.Used to such tight, tense finishes, Faulkner, with 40 still required from 27, clubbed a six to steady Lancashire’s nerves. And when the last ball of the seventeenth over was hit for four by Prince and the first ball of the eighteenth hit for six by Faulkner the result was no longer in question. There was still one more moment of drama to come though. Faulkner, looking to surge Lancashire to the target was outstandingly caught by Ryan Pringle diving and sliding towards the deep midwicket boundary. Pringle, aware that he was about to clip the boundary rope flicked the ball to Scott Borthwick who juggled it once, twice, and three more times before completing an amazing catch. That the scoreboard will simply read c Borthwick belies the nature of the catch, just as the scoreboard will mask the true nature of an excellent match. In the end Lancashire won comfortably with eleven balls to spare and given the way they bowled and indeed Prince batted they were deserved winners, but the great Neville Cardus was certainly right when he famously wrote “there ought to be some other means of reckoning quality in this the best and loveliest of games; the scoreboard is an ass.”

Hales demands England attention

Nottinghamshire batsman Alex Hales struck an impressive century against Hampshire to ensure that he maintained England’s attention.

Usually known as a one-day specialist, Hales has started the season with vigour and also smashed 236 against champions Yorkshire last week.Having been put in by Hampshire skipper Jimmy Adams on an overcast but bitterly cold morning, the Nottinghamshire opening pair of Steven Mullaney and Brendan Taylor started strongly. The duo put on 61 for the first wicket against a mature home attack – whose fast bowling quartet of James Tomlinson, Andre Adams, Gareth Berg and Sean Ervine’s combined ages totalling 137.As the seamers writhed Adams turned to left arm spinner Danny Briggs, who collected a wicket with his first ball – Taylor bowled through the gate.Opener Mullaney reached his patient first fifty of the season in 138 balls, while England one-day international Hales brought up his milestone in a more brisk manner. The pair recorded the second fifty partnership of the game – putting on 84 for the second wicket under the floodlights.Fast bowler Ervine made the important breakthrough of Mullaney – his 200th first class wicket for Hampshire – as the Nottinghamshire batsman chased a wide delivery to a somersaulting Adam Wheater.Hales had a scare on 84 when he offered a sharp chance to Ervine at first slip, which was the only fright in a near perfect knock. He is the highest run scorer in Division One this season – with 411 runs after his strong start to the season – and he brought up his second three-figure score of the season with a thick outside edge – his 20th boundary of the day.Wickets fell around the serene Hales as James Taylor top-edged a sweep behind for 10, before Samit Patel and Riki Wessels identically edged to second slip Liam Dawson off Adams and Berg.Former Middlesex strike bowler Berg claimed his second wicket two overs into the new ball when Nottinghamshire captain Chris Read mistimed a pull stroke into the leg side.Hales ended the day unbeaten on 136 frustrating Hampshire in the twilight of the day with Will Gidman, 22 not out – the pair putting on an unbeaten 40 for the seventh wicket.

Siddle to boost Lancashire promotion bid

Lancashire’s bid to bounce straight back to Division One of the County Championship has been given a pre-season boost with the signing of Australian fast bowler Peter Siddle.

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Mar-2015Lancashire’s bid to bounce straight back to Division One of the County Championship has been given a pre-season boost with the signing of Australia fast bowler Peter Siddle.Relegated last season, Lancashire are looking for a response under a new regime with Ashley Giles installed as head coach and Tom Smith taking over the captaincy from Glen Chapple. Siddle, one of the leading red ball bowlers in world cricket, is a significant addition to a perhaps lightweight bowling attack.Siddle is available from the beginning of the season until the end of July and will feature primarily in the County Championship. Siddle has taken over 200 Test wickets and enjoyed a successful stint with Nottinghamshire last season, taking 37 wickets at 31.48.”Peter is a world class bowler with a tremendous pedigree and having him available for such an extended period will give our County Championship campaign a real boost,” Ashley Giles, Lancashire head coach, said. “He has previous experience of playing in English conditions and I am looking forward to him adding some additional quality to our squad.”Siddle said: “I enjoyed my time in England last season with Nottinghamshire and when I heard of Lancashire’s interest I had no hesitation in speaking with Ashley. I am looking forward to playing my cricket at Old Trafford, which is such a fantastic international cricket ground.”

Amir rules out World Cup chances

Mohammad Amir has ruled out the possibility of playing in the 2015 World Cup, despite the efforts of the PCB to persuade the ICC to relax his five-year ban for spot-fixing

Mohammad Amir’s ban ends in September 2015•AFP

Mohammad Amir has ruled out the possibility of playing in the 2015 World Cup. Amir, who is serving a five-year ban for spot-fixing, said he didn’t have a “realistic” chance of playing in the event, which begins on February 14, despite the efforts of the PCB to persuade the ICC to relax the ban on the left-arm fast bowler.Under the current terms of his ban, Amir will be available for national selection from September 2015. The PCB requested the ICC, during its annual conference last year, to make a few concessions to his ban, including allowing Amir to use the board’s training facilities. The ICC set up a five-member committee to “review and recommend amendments to the ICC Anti-Corruption Code”, and the re-drafted code will be discussed at the ICC’s next annual conference in October.”I don’t see myself playing in the World Cup,” Amir said, on a television talk show. “It is not realistic, because all these things have to go through a process. I am just grateful to the cricket board for taking up my case. I will be ready whenever I am given the chance to resume training or playing.”Amir said the early success he tasted lured him “down the wrong path”, and urged the PCB to take measures to educate young players against corruption.”What I did was wrong and I got lost in all the fame and wealth,” Amir said. “I went down the wrong path. There are people who try to lure cricketers down the wrong path and into corruption and they need to be stopped.”I would suggest to the PCB to appoint a committee of senior players who can be tasked with keeping a watch on young players in domestic cricket and also in the national team and who can groom and educate these players on how to avoid the pitfalls of world cricket.”He added, though, that the ultimate responsibility rests with the player himself.”Seniors can play a big role in educating the new players,” he said. “But at the end, it is also a fact that, as an individual, one has to be honest with oneself. If you are honest then no one can touch you.”
