Wrexham and Birmingham are rivals on the pitch this season in League One and could also be battling it out on the television front soon. The Blues are being backed to create a docu-series that could rival Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's famous 'Welcome to Wrexham' show that has been such a hit. NFL legend Tom Brady is a minority owner at Birmingham and his wide appeal could make for popular viewing, according to football finance expert Dr. Rob Wilson.

    WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Wilson told Slingo: "The broader media market has an appetite for these at home. We've probably talked about it with Luke Littler doing an ‘at home’ docu-series because Wrexham’s series has worked really well on that basis because they've had a story to tell. Burnley and Sunderland have done similar and you would say that Birmingham has a story. It's a big historical football club, Tom Brady being involved.  It's got a wider appeal than just the club. But then you would say that for lots of other clubs. So it's about the value they could gain through that sort of series and whether it's material to the football club.  It was material and has been material to Wrexham. I don't think you'd get the same benefit for Birmingham City – having said that an extra few million and an extra few million eyeballs on your football team is never a bad thing."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Brady has already boasted that his club's "dreams are bigger" than Wrexham's after watching Birmingham down the Welsh side in League One earlier this season. The Midlands club are certainly in good shape currently and will be hoping to play Championship football next season. Brady's club sit top of League One, two points clear of Wycombe and eight ahead of Wrexham, with two games in hand on both sides.

Wrexham are also bidding for promotion this season but have work to do to secure an automatic promotion spot, with only the top two teams going straight up. The Welsh side take on Crawley next in League One, while Birmingham face Rotherham.

Big picture Scotland are on a high, and a win on Tuesday could take them a step closer to the Super 12s. Papua New Guinea are a loss away from an early exit, less than 48 hours after their maiden T20 World Cup outing against Oman. That realisation can be disconcerting, but it’s the reality of the format; only two teams from the pool can qualify into the next round. Both sides have been in Oman for over a month. There’s a sense of familiarity now, with Scotland and PNG having played each other in two 50-over matches and a T20I in the last three weeks alone. Scotland won comfortably each time but are aware of the fickle nature of the format. All PNG need is to look to their opponents, who toppled in-form Bangladesh on Sunday, for inspiration. Both sides need their batters to fire. In their opening game, PNG lost two wickets for no runs, while Scotland stuttered to 53 for 6. Where Scotland did remarkably well, though, was in trying to remain positive in good batting conditions, instead of being bogged down by the scorecard, with Chris Greaves and Mark Watt leading the turnaround.PNG were in an excellent position to up the tempo courtesy a half-century stand between Assad Vala and Charles Amini, but couldn’t find the finishing kick against Oman, hurtling to a 129 which they felt was at least 25 short. With the ball, they couldn’t work up any rhythm and were let down by the fielders. Tuesday calls for a massive lift if they are to remain alive in the competition.Related

Players to watch That PNG are here for their first World Cup is largely down to Norman Vanua’s blistering half-century that brought them back from the brink of an exit in their penultimate game of the qualifying tournament in 2019. On Sunday, Vanua, an allrounder, fell for just 1 against Oman. Can he deliver in a must-win?Fast bowler Safyaan Sharif was tasked with closing out the game for Scotland against Bangladesh. Needing to defend 24 off the final over, he conceded 18. Barring the final delivery that was banged in short, he attempted a yorker for each of the five previous deliveries, missing his mark thrice. End result was figures of 3-0-26-0. He has been wicketless in each of Scotland’s previous four T20Is. Tuesday may offer him another opportunity to change that in a game that could potentially put them into the Super 12s. Form Guide Scotland: WLWLL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
PNG: LLLLW Stats that matter Vanua, who didn’t bowl a single over in PNG’s opening loss to Oman, is the country’s leading T20I wicket-taker with 35 scalps. George Munsey holds the record for the second-most sixes in a T20I innings after Aaron Finch. He struck 14 of them in his 56-ball 127 not out for Scotland against Netherlands in September 2019. His strike rate of 153 is also the highest for a Scotland batter who has made at least 500 runs. Richie Berrington’s 63 consecutive appearances for Scotland is the most for any player in T20Is. Chennai Super Kings one win away from IPL playoffs

Big picture

This Chennai Super Kings side – which is one win away from a spot in the playoffs – functions at a very high level because of a stable first XI with clear role definitions.Faf du Plessis is the aggressor. And while he takes care of the run-rate, Ruturaj Gaikwad can simply play to his best tempo.Moeen Ali and Ambati Rayudu are perfect as No. 3 and 4 because of their natural ability to attack spin bowling. It is thanks to their efforts that Super Kings have been the quickest scoring team (9.05) in the middle overs (7-16) this season.

Then comes Ravindra Jadeja, whose batting and finishing ability has shot through the roof, so much so that he is basically carrying MS Dhoni, which is fair enough since MS Dhoni has carried this team for years.There. That’s the plan. And it never changes.Sunrisers Hyderabad on the other hand began the season with a captain whom they no longer want in the XI, their middle order is so brittle it limits the way their top order plays and a lack of a recognised finisher means there is always a chance of things going wrong at the exact time you want everything to go right – the death overs. This disarray is the reason why they are dead last on the points table. A loss tomorrow will eliminate them from playoff contention.

In the news

It looks like David Warner’s time with the Sunrisers is coming to an end. He wasn’t even at the ground for the last game they played and then went on to suggest on social media that this may be the new status quo. Head coach Trevor Bayliss did nothing to quash that suggestion, instead saying they wanted their younger players to experience what it is like to be at the ground, in the midst of all the action.Ruturaj Gaikwad has developed his game so much he’s almost like a new signing for Chennai Super Kings•BCCI/IPL

Likely XIs

Sunrisers Hyderabad: 1 Jason Roy, 2 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Priyam Garg, 5 Abhishek Sharma, 6 Jason Holder, 7 Abdul Samad, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Siddharth Kaul, 11 Sandeep SharmaChennai Super Kings: 1 Faf du Plessis, 2 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 3 Moeen Ali, 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Sam Curran/Dwayne Bravo, 9 Shardul Thakur, 10 Deepak Chahar, 11 Josh Hazlewood/Imran Tahir

Strategy punt

  • If there is one team against whom Dhoni can finish the way he used to, it is Sunrisers. He is destructive against their death bowlers, taking 81 runs off 46 balls from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and 45 off 25 from Siddharth Kaul. But this plan only works if – and it’s a big if – CSK can prevent their from facing Rashid Khan because that head-to-head ain’t pretty: 23 runs in 32 balls, one dismissal.
  • Kane Williamson loves playing against Super Kings. Check out how his stats against all their best bowlers: 50 runs off 29 balls against Dwayne Bravo; once dismissed, 49 off 35 against Jadeja; never dismissed, 57 off 38 against Shardul Thakur; twice dismissed and 58 off 44 against Deepak Chahar; never dismissed. Williamson batting through the innings could once again prove crucial to Sunrisers’ chances.

Stats that matter

  • Last IPL, over the course of 12 matches, the average first-innings score in Sharjah was 178. But this season, thanks to a relaid pitch that is a lot slower and a lot less conducive for shot-making, the average first-innings score is only 136.
  • A measure of how incredible Jadeja has been with the bat in recent seasons. Since IPL 2020, he is one of only three players to score at least 400 runs and average over 50. The others are KL Rahul and Williamson.
  • Rashid finds life a bit tougher than usual playing against the Super Kings. He averages 27.6 – his worst out of all teams – and gives up a boundary almost every over (33 in 36) – again his worst out of all teams.

According to the Brazilian who has 18 months remaining on his contract, has attracted interest not just from Marseille but also from Palmeiras. However, the Brazilian club might find themselves outpriced for the midfielder’s services.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pereira has faced speculation about his future, particularly after a controversial interview in Brazil last November. During the chat, he mentioned his connection with Roberto De Zerbi, the Marseille head coach, and a previous failed transfer to Nottingham Forest. When omitted from Fulham's squad for their 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur, questions about his future intensified. However, Fulham manager Marco Silva attributed his exclusion to "technical" reasons, while Pereira later claimed his comments were misinterpreted during translation.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Fulham signed Pereira from Manchester United in 2022 for approximately £10 million, with the Red Devils retaining a 20 per cent sell-on clause. Since joining, Pereira has made significant contributions to the west London club, becoming an integral part of Marco Silva’s side. Fulham, currently three points away from a potential European spot, are unlikely to entertain offers for key players like Pereira as they aim to strengthen their squad in January.

Nonetheless, if a move materializes, Pereira could be a valuable addition to Marseille’s midfield. His creativity and vision make him a versatile option, capable of supporting both the attack and defensive transitions. With Greenwood already making an impact in France, the reunion with Pereira could provide an exciting dynamic for Marseille in the second half of the season.

Aside from this transfer speculation, Diaz will hope for more game time this weekend when table-toppers Liverpool travel to mid-table Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday.

Mainoo dropped, academy duo earn 1st start: Predicted Man Utd XI v Barnsley

After a long international break in which Manchester United were forced to sit on back-to-back losses against Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool, they came back with a win over the weekend.

The opposition may have only been Southampton, but Erik ten Hag’s side ensured it wasn’t three losses on the bounce on Saturday as they weathered the hosts’ early pressure to emerge 3-0 victors.

The three-time European champions still look some way off being a free-flowing team capable of beating the Premier League’s big boys, but it was certainly a step in the right direction, and it might have eased the pressure on the manager somewhat.

However, with the season in full swing, the Red Devils must prepare for another match tomorrow night, as they play host to League One side Barnsley in the League Cup.

The level of competition means Ten Hag can afford to make several changes, and due to the number of games coming up, he could make up to eight and, in the process, hand an academy gem his first start.

1 GK – Altay Bayındır

So, starting between the sticks, we come to our first change as Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayındır comes in for Andre Onana.

As with most of them in this XI, this change is more about giving Ten Hag’s fringe players a chance to play than anything else.

This would be Bayındır’s second appearance for the Red Devils, but he’s far from inexperienced, with ten caps for Turkey and 145 appearances for Fenerbahçe under his belt.

2 RB – Diogo Dalot

Diogo Dalot for Manchester United

Diogo Dalot is staying in the right-back position.

The Portuguese international didn’t have a great game against the Saints on Saturday.

ESPN’s Adam Brown gave him just a 5/10 for his ‘careless challenge’ that led to the home side’s penalty, but he was a reliable performer last season and should play again tomorrow night.

3 CB – Harry Maguire

The first entre-back position brings the second change as Harry Maguire comes in for new boy Matthijs de Ligt.

The Dutchman put in a fine performance on Saturday but came off with five minutes to go with cramp, later saying, “it’s the first time I think in five months that I played three times in a row.”

So, for a game against League One opposition, Ten Hag should do the sensible thing, rest his new star defender, and play the more-than-capable Maguire, who should hopefully be fit after limping somewhat himself, in the final moments against Southampton.

4 CB – Johnny Evans

It’s the same story in the other centre-back position, as the recently returned Lisandro Martínez makes way for veteran defender Jonny Evans.

The Northern Irishman may be 36, and may have almost quit over the summer break, but he has proven himself to still be a useful player, and should be fine against the Tykes.

5 LB – Harry Amass

The final position in the defence brings us to the first full debut in the team, as 17-year-old Harry Amass comes in for summer signing Noussair Mazraoui.

The “exciting” youngster, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, impressed during preseason and has played for the club’s U18s and U21s in recent years, but is yet to make his competitive first-team debut, and what better time to do it than against a team from two divisions below.

6 CM – Casemiro

It’s all change in the midfield, and the first of the three players to come into the starting lineup is the immensely experienced Casemiro.

Now, the five-time Champions League winner has received plenty of somewhat justified flak over his underwhelming performances as of late, and while he may no longer be of the level required to match the best teams in the Premier League, he should be able to control a game against significantly weaker opposition, so long as he has mobile players around him, which he will do.

7 CM – Manuel Ugarte

The next ace to start in the middle of the park is Manuel Ugarte, who could be set to make his first start for the Red Devils after coming off the bench at the weekend.

The Uruguayan’s two starts in the international break should quell any fear Ten Hag may have had over his fitness, and the prospect of seeing him breaking up play and disrupting opposition attacks should excite fans.

The 23-year-old may well develop an impressive relationship with Kobbie Mainoo in the long run, but with the Englishman getting a well-earned rest for this match, his job will be to help Casemiro maintain control.

8 CM – Toby Collyer

The final midfielder in the lineup is another youngster who could be making his first start for the club, Toby Collyer.

However, unlike Amass, the 20-year-old talent, whom former Brighton U18 coach Mark Beard described as someone “who plays like two men,” has already made his competitive debut for the club, coming off the bench in the Community Shield and the loss to Liverpool this season.

9 RW – Amad Diallo

Keeping his place on the right of the front three is Amad Diallo.

Like Dalot, the Ivorian dynamo didn’t have his best game against the Saints, receiving a 6/10 from ESPN’s Brown, but was still a threat on the counter and looked lively throughout.

If Ten Hag wants to get the best out of the 22-year-old gem, then he needs to start him in a run of games, including the one tomorrow night.

10 ST – Joshua Zirkzee

It should be no surprise to see Joshua Zirkzee keep his place in the starting lineup, as with Rasmus Hojlund out injured, there isn’t another recognised striker the manager can turn to.

However, that doesn’t mean the former Bologna ace doesn’t deserve to keep his place, as while he’s not been prolific yet, he has looked dangerous here and there and has consistently found himself goalscoring areas.

Formal talks held: Newcastle take first steps to sign £7,500-p/w defender

Newcastle United have reportedly opened talks over signing another defender this summer as Eddie Howe looks to bolster his backline ahead of the new Premier League season.

Business slow for Newcastle United

As it stands, Newcastle United will be heading into their Premier League opener against newly promoted Southampton with just four new faces in their ranks.

Two of those, goalkeeping pair John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos, are unlikely to see too much first team action barring an injury to no.1 Nick Pope, with the Greek shot-stopper having been signed as part of a deal to sell promising talent Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest.

Elsewhere, they have added free agent Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth to bolster their backline, while William Osula has also arrived from Sheffield United in a deal worth £10m.

Lloyd Kelly in action for Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Though both deals may prove shrewd, they are far less than what was expected on Tyneside given the Saudi Arabian ownership of the club. They have, however, been boosted by the return of Sandro Tonali from a gambling ban, with the club's record signing available to return to action from the end of August in a move that will help ease midfield concerns for the Magpies.

Newcastle could land a bigger talent than Madueke in £205k-p/w sensation

The talent could be allowed to leave his current club this summer.

Meanwhile, they are locked in talks over a deal to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, having had two bids turned down for his services so far. Earlier in the week, Palace chairman Steve Parish was bullish over his defender, who is refusing to sign a new contract at Selhurst Park.

"Nobody has got to the valuation yet. If you want a superstar player you need to pay superstar money," he explained. "It's not near the point where we have to make a decision. We love having him and would love to keep him. If someone else wants to have him they need to make it really difficult for us. He's a generational talent."

Newcastle continue to push for his signature, and have now kick started a move for another defensive target.

Magpies make contact over Ligue 1 centre-back

That comes in the 6 foot 3 shape of Toulouse centre-back Logan Costa, who Eddie Howe's side have been linked with several times this summer. The 23-year-old is down to the final two years of his £7,500 per week deal in the south of France, and has been linked with moves to West Ham, Bologna and the Magpies.

Valued at between €18m and €20m (£15.4m-£17.1m) by his club, Newcastle have now taken the first official step towards his potential arrival.

That comes as Bologna local media [via Sport Witness] claim that Howe's side have now made "first formal contact" over a deal for the defender as they pursue a deal – the Italian press are following the deal due to Bologna's own interest.

Any move for Costa alongside Guehi would be a strange one in the long term, with Fabian Schar, Sven Botman and Jamal Lascelles all already at the club as well as new signing Kelly, despite Botman and Lascelles currently recovering from injury and expected back later in the season.

As the Magpies head into the new campaign with no backup options to Kelly and Schar, though, it makes a lot of sense for their immediate results.

After Calafiori: Arsenal to sign young ace who could replace £30m signing

At long last, Arsenal would appear to be closing in on their first signing of the summer transfer window.

In Mikel Arteta's first interview after the summer break, he admitted that things had been much slower in 2024.

That's pretty understandable given the European Championships but by this time last year, the Gunners had signed three new players; Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and £105m man Declan Rice.

This summer the first arrival is set to be Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori. Arteta has been pushing internally for the signing and has been a big part of the deal.

Talks have been ongoing over the last two weeks or so but breakthroughs have been made this weekend.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have agreed a fee of £34m with Bologna, the same Italian side they plucked Takehiro Tomiyasu from.

Remarkably, the player's ex-girlfriend has even confirmed the move.

That said, is another new signing about to walk through the doors of Colney?

Arsenal set to confirm two new signings

Edu and Co have been hard at work in recent weeks to get the club's transfer business for the summer up and running.

Calafiori is no doubt an exciting signing but their pursuit of top young talent isn't stopping there. It's been no secret that they are trying to bolster the goalkeeper department this summer, notably making a bid for Wolves stopper Dan Bentley.

Daniel Bentley on Premier League debut.

While he remains of interest, they are set to confirm the addition of highly-rated Ajax 'keeper Tommy Setford.

He won't be an immediate first-team figure but one that could push no.3 Karl Hein potentially all the way if he impresses.

The Standard reported on Saturday that they are 'finalising a move' and hope to have him in their pre-season touring squad of America.

The aforementioned Romano claims he is set to sign his contract with the club today (Sunday).

What Setford could bring to Arsenal

Yet to make his first-team debut for Ajax, Setford is particularly raw but one thing is for certain, the 18-year-old is one of the best young gloveman around.

Having already played for a host of England's youth teams, it's evident he's rated by the coaching set-ups at the FA too, something he was only too happy to admit in an interview last year. “Not only are the U17 coaches happy with me, but the U21 coaches and the first team see that I perform well in England. They see a lot of potential in me," Setford claimed.

So, what are his starring qualities? Well, analyst Ben Mattinson has already hailed him as one of "England’s most talented ball-playing goalkeepers at youth level." That certainly sounds as though it ticks a large box for what Arteta looks for between the sticks.

Standing at 6 foot 1, he is certainly no giant in goal, but fellow summer recruit David Raya is 6 foot so that shouldn't matter hugely.

While he is likely to begin playing youth football, he could be the man to eventually take over the number 2 duties from Aaron Ramsdale.

The £30m signing lost his place to Raya last summer and hasn't been able to reclaim it since. Everyone at the Emirates Stadium loves his infectious personality but it does look as though he'll be leaving soon in search of regular football.

You would imagine Arsenal will search for a more experienced number two if the England international does depart but in the incoming Setford, they have a perfect ball-playing stopper who could well take up that understudy role to Raya in the not-too-distant future and play it to better effect.

Imagine him & Guimaraes: Newcastle can forget Gnabry by signing £50m ace

Despite scoring 85 goals in the Premier League last season, Eddie Howe is aiming to improve his Newcastle United forward line ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Alexander Isak finished the campaign as the Magpies’ top scorer, scoring on 21 occasions in the league, and finishing as the division’s third-highest scorer.

Anthony Gordon enjoyed his best campaign in a Newcastle shirt, achieving double figures in goals and assists for the first time in his career.

Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak

However, despite the duo’s respective successes last season, the club are looking to further bolster the attacking trio, with Miguel Almiron unable to replicate his form from the season prior.

Newcastle’s attempts to bolster the forward line

In recent days, Howe’s side have been credited with an interest in signing Bayern Munich forward Serge Gnabry.

There have been doubts about the 29-year-old’s future in Germany after the arrival of French forward Michael Olise, prompting rumours of a potential £40m exit from the Bundesliga side.

Serge Gnabry

However, a report claimed that Gnabry had no interest in joining the Magpies this summer, with the forward wanting to stay and fight for his place in Munich.

The former Arsenal youngster would’ve undoubtedly provided added quality to Howe’s already potent attack, but it appears that he may have to explore other options if he is to improve his forward line.

The club have previously been linked with a move to sign one Premier League talent, with Howe and Newcastle needing to reignite the interest and test the waters over a possible move to Tyneside this summer.

How Gibbs-White compares to Gnabry

A few weeks ago, journalist Ignazio Genuardi claimed Newcastle are targeting Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White during the summer transfer window, but Nuno Espírito Santo’s side are holding out for at least £50m.

He’s impressed since his £25m move to the Reds, registering 15 goals and assists last season, over three times more than Gnabry could muster during the same campaign.

Morgan Gibbs-White celebrates for Nottingham Forest

Gibbs-White is a very versatile talent who can either feature as a number eight, ten, or even on either side of a three-man attack, with his tally of 80 progressive carries fitting perfectly into the hands of current Newcastle man Bruno Guimaraes, who has excelled with his ball-winning abilities.

The Brazilian won 53 tackles last season, before showcasing his excellent ball-playing abilities that saw him complete 1924 passes, at a completion rate of 85% – a figure that could allow Gibbs-White to cause carnage in the final third.

However, Gibbs-White, who’s been dubbed as a “gamechanger” by scout EBL, has also excelled defensively, winning nearly five times more tackles than Gnabry, whilst completing five times more interceptions than the German.

His versatility could be huge for Howe, with his side needing squad depth in multiple key areas, whilst also adding huge quality to the Magpies ranks.

Whilst it may be disappointing for the club to miss out on Gnabry, the Forest ace would be a potential upgrade, allowing Guimaraes to flourish further whilst also helping the club improve their chances of pushing for a Champions League spot.
