Cooke anchors strong Glamorgan victory

Glamorgan made it successive victories in the Royal London One-Day Cup with a consummate 84-run victory over Sussex in Cardiff.Having scored 302 for 6, the Welsh county bowled and fielded with great accuracy to maintain their 100 per cent winning start to this season’s 50-over competition.Glamorgan, having won the toss, chose to bat on a Sophia Gardens wicket that provided precious little assistance to the visiting bowlers, from start to finish. That said, the host county took an age to establish themselves after Steve Magoffin claimed the wicket of David Lloyd (11) in the fifth over and captain Jacques Rudolph was forced to retire hurt, in the 12th over, after being struck a painful blow on the forearm. The South African was later taken to hospital for X-Rays.Having come to terms with the pace of the wicket, Will Bragg (42) and Colin Ingram (13) added 68 for the third wicket and 19-year-old Aneurin Donald and wicketkeeper batsman Chris Cooke 69 for the fourth. Donald, who came into the game with three fifties in his previous five innings, helped himself to another half century, off 55 balls. However, it was the arrival at the crease of 33-year-old Graham Wagg that changed the game in Glamorgan’s favour. Sussex, who dropped four catches, found themselves chasing the ball to all four corners of a sun-drenched SSE Swalec Stadium.Cooke, who punished anything off line, passed 50 off 54 balls and played his part in a 112-run stand for the fifth wicket. The impressive allrounder Wagg struck seven fours and a six in reaching his half century off just 37 balls, and was eventually fifth man out at 290, bowled by England seamer Chris Jordan. Cooke departed for 80, in the final over, leaving Glamorgan to defend a more than respectable total of 302 for 6.In reply, Sussex lost Chris Nash for 12, run out by Dean Cosker, before Ed Joyce pulled a short delivery from Craig Meschede to Wagg, at deep square leg with the score on 64.With the wicket becoming slower, but providing turn for the likes of Andrew Salter and Cosker, Sussex found runs hard to come by. However, as much as the slow bowlers applied the brakes, it was the medium pace of Meschede who picked up the key wicket of New Zealander Ross Taylor.A short ball appeared to be heading back over the bowler’s head when Meschede stuck out a hand and took an outstanding catch. Cosker weighed in with the wicket of Harry Finch (23), at 90 for 4, and from that juncture, the outcome was just about inevitable.Luke Wright and Ben Brown (31) provided some resistance, with 68 for the fifth wicket, but when the latter pulled a short ball from Wagg to Ingram at mid-on, Glamorgan must have felt they were home and dry.In the end, they were. Wright and Chris Jordan struck one or two lusty blows before the Sussex captain, who helped himself to six fours and two sixes in a 48-ball innings of 65, top edged Michael Hogan to mid on, where Ingram took a magnificent, tumbling, one-handed catch.Donald took an equally spectacular catch to dismiss Jordan (22), before Hogan sent back George Garton, Ajmal Shahzad and Magoffin as Sussex were bowled out for 218 in the 43rd over.

Leeds United Could Ditch Rutter For "Unplayable" £20m Titan

Leeds United's hopes of signing Viktor Gyokeres this summer have been handed a boost and Javi Gracia could ditch the disappointing Georginio Rutter for the Swedish striker at Elland Road.

Could Leeds sign Gyokeres?

The Yorkshire outfit have long been linked with the Coventry City forward, who has been one of the standout performers in the Championship so far this campaign, notching 17 goals and eight assists for Mark Robins' side.

A report from Football Insider suggested that the Sky Blues are resigned to losing the 24-year-old should they fail to earn promotion this season, although that still remains a possibility, as they sit just three points outside the playoffs in the second tier.

Gyokeres looks destined to be playing Premier League football this time next year so the Yorkshire outfit must first avoid relegation, and then they could revisit a move for the £20m-rated striker.

WhoScored currently ranks the Sweden international as the sixth-best player in the division, as his impressive goal contributions and overall performances have helped him to a superb average rating of 7.19.

For context, Leeds' best player this season according to the same website has been Pascal Struijk with a 6.87 average rating, which emphasises the quality which Gyokeres could add to Gracia's squad.

Other than Rodrigo, no player at Elland Road this season has managed more than four goals in the top flight, which highlights a big area of improvement, especially when you consider that the Spaniard will turn 33 next term.

Should Leeds get rid of Rutter already?

The Whites spent a club-record £35.5m on Rutter in January, in the hope that the young Frenchman could aid their attacking woes and keep them in the Premier League, but the former Hoffenheim man has done little to justify his fee thus far, with no goals or assists in his nine appearances in all competitions.

Georginio Rutter at Leeds United.

The 20-year-old reportedly wishes he had remained at Hoffenheim, which doesn't bode well for his future at Elland Road, and his record of just 11 goals and eight assists with the Bundesliga side does little to suggest he will be a prolific forward at Leeds.

Meanwhile, Gyokeres has proven himself as a player that is far too good for the Championship at just 24 and is well-versed in the demands of English football, with teammate Max Biamou labelling him "unplayable" earlier in the season.

Even before Rutter arrived in England, he was averaging just 1.8 shots and 0.7 key passes per game at Hoffenheim, compared to the 3.1 shots and 1.6 key passes per game Gyokeres has contributed in the Championship this season.

Therefore, if Leeds do stay up and bring the Swedish star in this summer, then it could bring an early end to Rutter's time at Elland Road.

West Ham eye Will Still for next season

West Ham United are eyeing a new manager target to succeed David Moyes next season with news coming to light on Reims boss Will Still.

The Lowdown: Moyes under pressure…

The Scotsman has been under real pressure to maintain his position this season, especially after a summer of serious spending followed by lack-lustre performances on the field.

West Ham are currently in the relegation places after sliding into the Premier League’s bottom three, having won just six league games all season and losing 14.

Reports have suggested that the east Londoners have weighed up possible replacements with both Marcelo Bielsa and Rafael Benitez previously linked.

However, insiders close to the club have also shared that the likelihood of a Moyes replacement before the end of 2022/2023 is slim given the lack of standout candidates and possible expenses.

The Latest: West Ham eye Will Still…

The Hammers, according to a report, are now believed to be real admirers of Reims boss Still to potentially replace Moyes next season.

According to Foot Mercato, West Ham have apparently taken note of the 30-year-old’s exploits in France as his stock ‘continues to climb’, with the Irons currently ‘under the spell’ of Still.

It’s added that the coach himself is ‘thrilled’ by this, as per their ‘information’, as Still is knowingly a West Ham supporter.

The Verdict: Too soon?

The largely inexperienced coach has been centre of a brilliant story across the channel with Reims recently going on a 17-game unbeaten run.

Marseille sadly ended their hot streak with a 2-1 win over Still on Sunday but Reims’ tactician is in fact ‘becoming very popular’ in Ligue 1.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has even took note of the young tactician, claiming Still’s rise to the top level has been extremely impressive.

Howe stated to Chronicle Live:

“He [Still] has certainly done very well. It is very difficult to do at that age.

“I started at 31, I felt at that moment I knew what I was doing. I am talking about my own experiences here. I realised a few years later that I probably didn’t. I have learned as I have gone on, the whole of range of things you need to be successful as a manager.

“That’s just my journey. I’m not sure on Will’s background and how he’s built his career to this point but very impressive to be managing at his age.

“The success he’s had has been incredible. Are managers getting younger? I’m not sure if that’s a fact or not. But certainly it is a very demanding job.”

However, his lack of serious experience in a competitive division like the Premier League could count against him and this move could be seen as a real gamble.

TalkSPORT man claims West Ham may sack Moyes in summer

TalkSPORT’s Mark Goldbridge believes that David Moyes could leave West Ham at the end of the season.

The Lowdown: No change appears imminent

There has indeed been a lot of talk over the last few weeks and months about the future of Moyes at West Ham as he struggles to guide them away from the threat of relegation with just six league wins under their belt.

However, their emphatic win at home on the weekend against fellow relegation strugglers Nottingham Forest will have done him and the team a whole load of good as they’re now out of the bottom three.

Moyes has been able to guide the Hammers away from relegation battles in the past and if West Ham were to sack him and bring in a new manager, there may not be many better qualified to do so, than Moyes himself.

The Latest: Moyes and West Ham may part ways in the summer

Goldbridge has admitted on Ben Foster’s YouTube channel that sacking Moyes now would make no sense but doesn’t believe a decision could be made in the summer.

He said: (16:40) “We said it a few weeks ago, I think with Moyes it might be time to go at West Ham but that’s a summer move. That’s a thank you very much and off you go, then you try a different project and then you’ve got the start of the season if it goes wrong you can make a change but you don’t take [him out now].”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-6/” title=”West Ham latest news” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/cropped-david-moyes-premier-league-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: West Ham should be sticking with Moyes

The Hammers already made the mistake in the past of parting ways with Moyes only to return to the Scott with their tail between their legs and ask for him to come back, which has seen him lead them to a Europa League semi-final and come very close to a top-four finish.

West Ham mustn’t be looking into making a change as Moyes has had a hand in signing all of these expensively assembled players so he must be allowed to try and get a fine tune-out of them in the final stretch of the season.

With just 14 Premier League games left to play it would make very little sense to relieve Moyes of his duties as a new boss would have next to no time to implement his tactics and style of play and would also show a lack of respect for the job Moyes had done at the London Stadium.

Rangers: David Murray had howler on Stephane Guivarc’h

Glasgow Rangers during the 1990s were an unstoppable force, winning nine out of the ten titles available to them during the decade, while also adding countless domestic trophies.

David Murray spent vast sums of money – at times, too much – in order to create a side that could not only dominate Scotland but also conquer Europe. Unfortunately, this idea didn’t exactly come to fruition.

Despite some wonderful players joining the club while Murray was chairman such as Brian Laudrup, Paul Gascoigne, and Jorg Albertz, there were of course, many who didn’t quite live up to the exceedingly high expectations at the Ibrox side.

Was Stephane Guivarc’h David Murray’s biggest flop at Rangers?

Dick Advocaat took over from Walter Smith in the summer of 1998 following the club’s first trophyless season in 13 years and he was expected to succeed where the Scot had failed – in Europe.

Just before Christmas, the Dutchman signed Frenchman Stephane Guivarc’h from Newcastle United for a fee of £3.5m, and having won the World Cup just a few months before, playing in the final against Brazil, it initially looked like an excellent move.

His credentials were further enhanced with the fact he netted a staggering 46 goals during the 1997/1998 campaign for AJ Auxerre and this effectively sealed his spot in the French squad for the 1998 World Cup on home soil.

He failed to score during the tournament and a move to Newcastle following the event ended disastrously, scoring once in four matches before moving to the Gers in November of the same year.

Despite a solid enough start which saw him score in the League Cup final against St Johnstone as the club secured the first part of an eventual treble, the 14-cap striker scored just seven times in total before moving on at the end of the season.

He re-joined his former club Auxerre yet his brief spell at Rangers has gone down amongst the Ibrox faithful as one of the club’s worst-ever transfers, especially for the fee paid compared to goals scored.

Murray had a massive howler with Guivarc’h and although the treble was sealed at the end of the season, flops like the Frenchman won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

Newcastle transfer news on Sean Moore

Newcastle United are reportedly ‘very interested’ in signing U21 star Sean Moore, and are preparing to launch a bid for him in the summer.

The Lowdown: Moore profiled

Moore is an upcoming winger who plays in the Northern Irish Premiership with Cliftonville, and has scored three goals and made a further two assists in 25 games in total overall competitions so far this season (Transfermarkt).

After his impressive performances, Moore was called up to the Northern Ireland U18 squad by manager Gerard Lyttle, who says that he is a player that ‘gets fans out of their seats’:

“He has got that pace about him, with a drop of the shoulder and a trick to get away from players. I’ve played with and coached a lot of players that never understood how best to use their pace, but Sean does. He faces defenders up and goes at them. That gets fans out of their seats.”

The Latest: Newcastle interest

As per NUFC Blog, Newcastle are ‘very interested’ in signing Moore in the summer, but face competition from fellow Premier League rivals West Ham United and Brighton and Hove Albion for his signature, as well as Scottish giants Celtic.

After St. James’ Park scouts watched him closely this campaign, the North East club are ready to launch a bid for Moore this summer, and the 17-year-old has just accepted his first call up to the Republic of Ireland U19s squad, preparing to train in Dublin ahead of March’s Euro qualifiers.

The Verdict: Exciting move

After signing teenage talents Garang Kuol and Harrison Ashby already this season, it is clear PIF want to build for the future not just the here and now, and Moore would be another exciting gem to add to the group.

He is already playing men’s football at Cliftonville, and has performed well in helping them reach the top of the table in Northern Ireland.

The fact that he has had international recognition from two different national teams competing for his future shows his promise, and the Magpies will be very eager to get this deal over the line given the competition that they too are facing.

Everton: ‘Verbal offer’ made for Sulemana

Everton have reportedly made a ‘verbal offer’ to try and sign Rennes winger Kamaldeen Sulemana.

The Lowdown: ‘Inroads’ made for Sulemana

It was reported earlier this week that the Toffees have made ‘inroads’ to try and strike a deal with Rennes for the Ghanaian forward.

However, they have recently submitted a bid worth £45m including add-ons to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, so it will be interesting to see if they pursue both deals so late on in the January transfer window.

The Latest: Everton make ‘verbal offer’ for Sulemana

Taking to Twitter in sharing a corresponding article for The Athletic, David Ornstein says that Everton made a ‘verbal offer’ on Sunday for Sulemana, using some of the money that they reaped from the sale of Anthony Gordon to Newcastle United, in a prospective €30m (£26.4m) deal for the wantaway Rennes forward.

Ornstein tweeted: “Everton made verbal offer on Sunday for permanent signing of Rennes winger Kamaldeen Sulemana. Would see #EFC reinvest some Gordon proceeds in direct replacement. #StadeRennais seeking ~€30m for 20yo who wants to go. #SaintsFC still keen.”

The Verdict: Sulemana over Gallagher

Sulemana has to be the priority for Everton over Gallagher, as they have just lost Gordon and are already have plenty of central midfielders in the squad.

Hailed as a ‘beast’ in one-on-one situations by Ghanaian football writer Emmanuel Ayamga, the Rennes maestro impressively ranks in the 98th percentile for dribbles completed per match among positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues over the past 12 months. He also excels in the defensive side of his game, sitting in the 98th percentile for interceptions and 91st for tackles per match (FBref).

Sulemana has even been lauded by current Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag as a player who is ‘technically skilled’ and possesses ‘a lot of speed’ (Football Ghana), so he appears to have all of the requisite attributes to give defenders nightmares in the Premier League.

Nonetheless, if Everton can only sign one of him or Gallagher, then the 20-year-old Ghanaian must be top of their list.

Newcastle inquire for Sunderland’s Michut

Newcastle United have reportedly been ‘making inquiries’ over PSG midfielder Edouard Michut, currently on loan at North East rivals Sunderland.

The Lowdown: Another prospect

Newcastle already signed young Australian talent Garang Kuol, who they have loaned out to Hearts in the Scottish Premiership, and are reportedly looking at adding 18-year-old Brazilian prospect Matheus Franca to their growing pool of exciting youth at St. James’ Park.

At just 19 years of age and coming from PSG’s academy, where he has scored twice in ten games at U19 level and has featured eight times for the senior team, bagging one assist (Transfermarkt), Michut is another hot property the Tynesiders could look to add to their ranks.

The Latest: Inquiries made

Taking to Twitter, Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas has revealed that both Eddie Howe’s side, as well as RB Leipzig from the Bundesliga, have been ‘making inquiries’ over Michut’s progress on loan at Sunderland ahead of a potential move in the summer:

“#Newcastle and #RBLeipzig have been making inquiries about Edouard Michut’s progress and both clubs intend to watch him during second half of season on loan at #Sunderland from #PSG. A talent who has struggled with injuries but recently impressed.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-7/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Building something special

In addition to the signing of Kuol and potential arrivals of Franca and Michut, the Magpies look to be building something special in terms of young players who could grow into superstars over the next few years.

Hailed as an ‘immense talent’ by Black Cats manager Tony Mowbray, Michut has played injuries.

Nonetheless, he was named as one of the 50 best wonderkids in 2022 in GOAL’s annual NXGN list, which labelled him as ‘the new Marco Verratti’ by some inside the PSG academy, while his passing ability has been described as ‘among the best in Europe for players his age’.

Michut is clearly a very talented player, and if he can overcome his injury problems, he would be an astute signing for the Toon in the summer.

Tottenham: Spurs ‘set to announce’ record commercial income

Tottenham Hotspur are ‘set to announce’ club-record commercial income for the 2021/2022 Premier League season, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Conte seals Champions League qualification…

Spurs boss Antonio Conte secured a top four finish and the riches that go with it as the north Londoners qualified for this season’s Champions League campaign.

This has potentially resulted in a higher off-field turnover through television revenue and ticket sales in a big boost for the club and chairman Daniel Levy.

Some of these funds were used to back Conte in the summer market and reports suggest they could also make moves ahead of the looming January transfer window.

The Latest: Spurs ‘set to announce’ record commercial income…

As per a new claim, it appears Tottenham will drop an exciting off-field announcement for the season prior.

Football Insider say the club are ‘set to announce’ club-record commercial income for the 21/22 campaign as their revenue generated through sponsorship and merchandise sales marginally surpasses ‘£161.5 million’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-3/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

A ‘financial source’ explained that only league champions Man City and Man United are ‘expected’ to join the north Londoners in earning more from commercial income than media rights.

The Verdict: Great news…

The fact Spurs failed to seal CL qualification for that year and instead had to settle for a Conference League place, supporters can probably expect an even higher off-field income for the 22/23 season.

After the years blighted by COVID-19, the Lilywhites’ financial growth accompanied with their state of the art new stadium appears to be taking real effect.

As Tottenham seek to match the level of England’s most elite sides, this can only come as a very promising bit of news.
