It was another year of painful almosts for Arsenal this season, as they missed out on the Premier League title on the final day and were knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals by a single goal.
However, Mikel Arteta's side have come on leaps and bounds in the last few years, and it's starting to feel more like when, rather than if, they finally lift a major trophy.
That said, adding a genuinely clinical striker this summer would go a long way toward speeding things up, and based on recent reports, that may well happen, which can only be good news for Bukayo Saka.
Arsenal's striker search
According to a recent report from Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport, Napoli's star striker Victor Osimhen 'expects' Arsenal to make a move for him this summer.
The report has revealed that while fellow Premier League side Chelsea have ruled themselves out of the race for the Nigerian's signature, the Gunners have maintained a presence 'in the background', leading to the player's belief that they will eventually make a move for him.
If the North Londoners make said move, they will have to pay €120m to activate the forward's release clause, which converts to around £102m.
It would be a costly deal, but with the margins so close this year, it might be worth it, as adding a clinical number nine can only help make Saka even better.
How Osimhen could improve Saka
Now, if Arsenal are going to spend north of £100m on a new striker this summer, they have to be certain that they are getting an upgrade on the two they already employ – Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus – and it looks like they would be. In fact, when comparing the trio's pure output from the last two seasons, it's not even close.
For example, despite enduring a slightly less fruitful campaign by his own lofty standards this year, the "Nigerian nightmare", as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, returned a mammoth 57 goals and assists in 71 games since the start of 2022/23.
In the same period, Havertz returned 31 in 98 games, whereas Jesus managed 34 in 69, and while these are impressive numbers in their own right, they don't hold a candle to what the former LOSC Lille star managed.

His impressive ability to consistently find the back of the net while also providing a reasonable number of assists is why his addition to the side could help Saka reach an entirely new level next season.
The Hale End superstar cemented his status as one of the best players in the country this year by racking up a staggering 20 goals and 14 assists in just 47 games for the Gunners.

However, according to Understat, the English international should've chalked up more assists this season, as he underperformed his expected assists figure by 3.33.
This isn't a failing on the winger's part. Instead, it is indicative of his teammate's failure to finish off their chances, which could well become a problem of the past with the "frightening" Napoli ace in the side, as dubbed by journalist Emmet Gates.
Napoli star Victor Osimhen
Even if he missed a sitter one moment, he'd almost certainly make up for it later on in the game, thus helping Saka further increase his assist tally.
Ultimately, it would be an incredibly expensive deal to complete, but bringing Osimhen to the Emirates this summer could be the final piece of the puzzle that turns Arsenal from also-rans into title winners.

With a two-week quarantine period representing a substantial cost for organisers,SLC rethinks timing
Andrew Fidel Fernando11-Aug-2020
Associated Press
The Lanka Premier League (LPL) has been postponed until at least mid-November, after Sri Lanka’s government insisted that anyone arriving on the island for the tournament would have to undergo a 14-day quarantine. With only 17 days to go until the scheduled start of the LPL, and with a two-week quarantine period representing a substantial cost for organisers, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) was forced to rethink the tournament’s timing.SLC had hoped Sri Lanka’s health ministry would allow a shorter and more flexible quarantine period for those directly involved in the tournament – players, broadcast crew, organisers and commentators – but with many of the potential new arrivals coming from nations dealing with Covid-19 outbreaks, government health officers had not consented.”We’re not the experts, so we had to go with what the health ministry is telling us,” SLC vice-president Ravin Wickramaratne told ESPNcricinfo. “There’s a window from November 20th to December 12th, so that is what we are planning.” It was not feasible to simply push the tournament back several weeks, as it would then clash with the proposed dates for the IPL, which the LPL is unlikely to be able to compete with in terms of viewer interest.ALSO READ: Bangladesh tour of SL could be rescheduled to OctoberSri Lanka has largely been successful in containing the virus, recording even fewer official deaths than New Zealand. But that has been the result of stringent quarantine measures, which may even hurt the chances of international cricket resuming in Sri Lanka in October. Bangladesh are due to tour for a Test series during that month, with the BCB even asking to send a development squad, meaning there may be as many as 60 arrivals from Bangladesh. But if all of those flying in are required to undergo 14 days in quarantine, even that tour becomes less feasible, according to Wickramaratne.”We have asked the health ministry to try and be more flexible going forward,” he said. “If they have to do a 14-day quarantine for the Bangladesh tour, then the costs of that will have to be borne by their board, and it becomes difficult.”Playing the LPL at such short notice was always going to be a stretch given franchises are yet to be finalised for the five teams, while sponsors were yet to be found as well. The scarcity of flights into Colombo presented yet another serious logistical hurdle, with players and broadcast personnel needing to be flown in from various parts of the world.SLC had confirmed an event-holder for the tournament in the Dubai-based Innovative Production Group (IPG), however, and IPG is expected to now work towards holding this tournament in November.SLC has frequently failed to host a franchise T20 tournament. On at least four previous occasions, the board has announced a tournament that never materialised.
Chelsea are now said to be hopeful they can tempt Barcelona president Joan Laporta into selling them a £616,000-per-week player, as they plot a £68 million summer transfer bid.
Stewart and Winstanley set to lead Chelsea summer transfer plans
Much has been made of the board's end-of-season review, which is set to take place this week, but co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley can breathe a sigh of relief – as it is believed the Chelsea officials are safe from Todd Boehly's axe.

The Blues are close to getting their summer business underway…
ByTom Cunningham May 19, 2024
Telegraph journalist Matt Law shared this information last week, with Stewart and Winstanley set to spearhead Chelsea's transfer plans again this summer after identifying £400 million-plus worth of new recruits around this time last year.
They will have to contend with PSR, and potentially have to raise £100 million through player sales by June 30, but that isn't to say they don't have a sizable kitty. Indeed, Chelsea are already on the verge of sealing a deal for Palmeiras starlet Estevao, as the club continue their charge to bring in some of world football's most exciting talents.

The teenager could set Boehly back as much as £56 million, including £22 million in add-ons (Fabrizio Romano), with the west Londoners also set to potentially invest a fair amount into the senior team.
A new striker and defender is wanted at Chelsea, with the Blues after Napoli star Victor Osimhen and looking at Barcelona's Ronald Araujo as options for each position. They could also opt to reinforce the midfield, as uncertainty continues to surround the future of academy graduate Conor Gallagher.
Now, as per reports from Spain, it appears that another Barca star is turning heads at Stamford Bridge – in the form of Frenkie de Jong. The Dutchman has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, as Man United were caught up in quite a high-profile transfer saga revolving around de Jong two years ago.
A move to England could still be on the cards for Barca's £616,000-per-week ace, with a report from Spain sharing details about Chelsea's interest.
Chelsea hoping to tempt Laporta with £68 million bid for de Jong
Indeed, it is believed that Chelsea are hoping to tempt Barcelona with a £68 million bid for de Jong this summer – and by extension their club president Laporta.
They're apparently planning a £68m move for the 27-year-old, and hope to convince the Catalans to a deal, as well as swaying the player himself into finally departing the Nou Camp.
Manchester United transfer target Frenkie de Jong in action for Barcelona.
The La Liga giants, for their part, would be willing to sell as long as they deem Chelsea's final offer worth enough – though it is unclear whether they believe £68 million would be that final price. Laporta and co need to sell and raise funds, and de Jong represents a potentially big opportunity, according to the Spanish report.
Despite Newcastle United's injury crisis this campaign, it has come with a positive as it's allowed boss Eddie Howe to give valuable first-team minutes to multiple youngsters within the club.
Lewis Miley and Elliot Anderson have been the main beneficiaries for the Magpies, with the duo making 36 Premier League appearances between them this season.
18-year-old Miley has impressed under Howe despite his tender age, becoming a real key part of the Newcastle side, after the injuries and suspension to Joelinton and Sandro Tonali, respectively.
Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.
He's contributed with four goals and assists combined, a respectable return for such a young player in his breakthrough campaign as a professional.
After Miley's brilliant start to life in the first team under Howe, the Magpies boss and Saudi PIF should step up the chase for another teenage talent who has been linked with a move to the club.
Newcastle interested in 16-year-old talent this summer
According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Newcastle are battling fellow Premier League side Manchester United for the signature of 16-year-old Sunderland talent Chris Rigg – who looks "increasingly likely" to leave his current side.
The box-to-box midfielder, who currently plies his trade in the Championship, has excelled for the Black Cats, despite the club struggling to secure a return to England's top flight.
He's scored twice in 21 appearances this season in what has been an incredible breakthrough season for the youngster despite his tender age.
Despite the Magpies and United's interest, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Aston Villa have all registered interest in the talent who is valued at £250k, as per Transfermarkt.
Why Rigg & Miley could be the future of Newcastle
Given the fact Rigg and Miley are both still aged just 16 & 17 respectively, the pair could prove to be the future of Newcastle, with the duo not looking out of place so far this season throughout their respective campaigns.
Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg.
The "Roy Keane-esque" youngster, as described by former boss Tony Mowbray, has produced some excellent stats in England's second tier this season, with Rigg making two tackles per 90, demonstrating his ball-winning abilities.
He's also averaged 4.2 progressive passes per 90 – a tally that is higher than current Magpies player Miley, albeit in a lower-quality division.

Rigg blows Miley out of the water when it comes to progressive carries with the ball, with his tally of 2.4 per 90 more than double than that of the 17-year-old who can only muster 1.1, with the pair seemingly showcasing a complementary mix of talents to make them an effective partnership.
There's no disputing the Sunderland youngster's quality, especially given he is just 16, with the club needing to push hard this summer to invest in a potential gem for the future.
Chris Rigg for Sunderland.
He would be a perfect partner for Miley in the years to come, with the Magpies also needing to keep one eye on the future as well as the present as they try to reclaim a Champions League spot next season.
Whilst the Black Cats may be reluctant to sell such a star to their bitter rivals, should Howe's side produce a reasonable offer for Rigg, the club may be forced to accept it with the midfielder's family known to be huge Newcastle supporters.
A controversial deal, no doubt, but the Magpies would be foolish not to pursue it.

Glasgow Rangers return to action in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday night in their third attempt to face Dundee away from home at Dens Park.
The Light Blues need to bounce back from their disappointing defeat away to Ross County last time out with all three points in this match ahead of their cup tie with Hearts.
Philippe Clement's side can close the gap between themselves and Celtic to just one point in the Premiership table if they pick up the win on Wednesday.
The Belgian head coach could look make changes and alter his starting XI from the 3-1 loss to Ross County, and here is FFC's predicted Gers lineup for the clash with Dundee.
1 Jack Butland
Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland
Former England international Jack Butland, who was signed on a free transfer from Crystal Palace last summer, did not enjoy his best afternoon last time out, as two of his saves were followed up by finishes from opposition forwards.
However, the towering colossus, who has started all 32 games in the league for the Light Blues, seems likely to retain his place as the first choice.
2 James Tavernier
At right-back, James Tavernier could start again after he netted his 17th league goal of the season from the penalty spot against Ross County.
The Rangers captain has scored in six of his last seven league games for the club, scoring seven goals in that time, and could look to add to his tally against Dundee.
3 Connor Goldson
Rangers defender Connor Goldson.
At the heart of the defence, Connor Goldson could retain his position at centre-back for the Scottish giants despite the team conceding three goals.
He won all eight of his individual duels but will be hoping to organise his defence better to stop soft goals being given away on Wednesday night.
4 John Souttar
John Souttar
Alongside Goldson, John Souttar could start once again after a solid performance in spite of the team's poor display and defensive showing last time out.
The Scotland international made multiple last-ditch blocks and clearances – with two blocks and five clearances in total – to stop the scoreline being even worse than it was.
5 Dujon Sterling
Rangers midfielder Dujon Sterling.
The first alteration to the starting XI could come at left-back as Borna Barisic could be ditched from the team to make away for Dujon Sterling.
Against Ross County, the Croatian lightweight only completed 67% of his attempted passes and won just one ground duel in 54 minutes on the pitch.
Whereas, Sterling won ten of his 12 ground duels and completed 74% of his attempted passes in 90 minutes against Celtic in the Old Firm clash at left-back, and could provide a more combative presence at the back for the Light Blues if selected over Barisic.
This is why Clement could unleash the "powerful" – as described by former boss Alex Neil at Stoke City – battler from the start at left-back against Dundee.
6 John Lundstram
Rangers midfielder John Lundstram.
John Lundstram could keep his place at the base of the midfield, despite falling asleep for the second Ross County goal to allow his man to score a rebound from Butland's save.
He did, however, complete 90% of his attempted passes and win four of his six physical duels throughout the game, which shows that it was not a completely poor display from the former Sheffield United man.
7 Nicolas Raskin
Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin
The second alteration to the starting XI could come next to Lundstram in the middle of the park, with Nicolas Raskin replacing Kieran Dowell.
Against Ross County, the former Norwich man failed to create any chances or register a single effort on goal, whilst being dribbled past twice by opposition players.
Raskin, who has only been dribbled past 0.6 times per game and won 55% of his duels in the Premiership this season, could be given an opportunity to shine in his place.
8 Todd Cantwell
Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.
In the attacking midfield position, Todd Cantwell should start again after an energetic and unfortunate performance against Ross County on Sunday.
The English whiz forced a terrific save out of Ross Laidlaw during the first half and then hit the crossbar with a fierce effort in the second half, which suggests that the talented attacker was unlucky not to score on the day.
He also created two chances for his teammates and won ten duels throughout the game, and should now be given another chance to showcase his quality.
9 Abdallah Sima
Abdallah Sima
On the right of the attacking trio, Abdallah Sima should retain his position in the starting XI to offer a goalscoring threat in the final third for Rangers.
The Senegal international, who is on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, has scored 11 goals in 16 Premiership starts this season, and could fire the team to the three points if provided with the right chances in front of goal.
10 Fabio Silva
Fabio Silva
In the number nine position, Clement could finally ditch Cyriel Dessers from the lineup, as he has not been on the bench in the league since the 28th of February against Kilmarnock, after he produced a horrorshow against Ross County.
The Nigerian marksman missed two 'big chances' and lost 80% of his duels throughout the game, as he proved himself to be a liability out of possession and in front of goal.
Fabio Silva, who usually plays on the left flank, should now be handed an opportunity to show what he can do as the central striker, which is a position he has played in for Rangers earlier this term.

Mazraoui has not had much time to settle in to life at the English side ahead of their opening game of the Premier League season against Fulham on Friday. However, the Morocco international is confident he will blend in well with his new surroundings as he explained his ability to thrive under pressure.
WHAT MAZRAOUI SAID
He told the club's website: "I think now during my career I’m used to nothing else. To perform, to have pressure that you always have to become champion, I think I’m really used to that because of the clubs I’ve played for now.If the club demands that, if the fans demand that of the club, they demand it of you, of course. You have to perform, it’s no question."
He added: "I think I’m a player who adapts fast. I’m quite good under pressure. When they press high, I can find a way to come out of the press. Attacking-wise, I like to really support the winger. That’s the guy who has to score and give the assists, so I try to support him the best I can in both ways, in defending ways and also on the ball."

A highly-rated backroom maestro could say yes to taking a job at Liverpool this summer, according to an update from journalist Ben Jacobs.
Liverpool transfer & manager news
Jurgen Klopp is leaving as Reds manager at the end of the season, so it is only natural that numerous potential candidates have emerged to fill the huge void that he will leave this summer.
Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is the definite frontrunner to come in and replace Klopp as he closes in on a stunning Bundesliga title with his current team. His knowledge of Liverpool as a club makes him a perfect choice, not to mention his reputation as one of the best young coaches in Europe.
Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Pedro Neto.
A number of different players have also been linked with moves to Anfield in order to bolster the new manager's options, with Wolves winger Pedro Neto seen as an exciting target that the Reds have scouted previously.
Meanwhile, Brentford attacker Bryan Mbeumo is also reportedly wanted by Liverpool at the end of the season, potentially being seen as a replacement for Mohamed Salah should the Egyptian icon move on.
Michael Edwards could take Liverpool job
Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jacobs said that former sporting director Michael Edwards could be persuaded to return to Liverpool, even though it is far from a given, as the Reds look to fill the role as soon as possible after Jorg Schmadtke's exit.
While Jacobs insisted that Liverpool had not yet formally approached Edwards over an Anfield return, he did outline what it might take for the 44-year-old to accept any offer that comes his way before the start of next season:
"He wants equity, which is something that FSG did give to Lebron James. So the key question is if they really want Edwards, would they be prepared to give him equity and total control over the football department? And if the answer is yes to one or both of these things, then Edwards might seriously consider a role."

The idea of Edwards returning to Liverpool is a mouthwatering prospect, considering what a huge impact he made during his first spell at the club, masterminding numerous signings and enjoying an excellent working relationship with Klopp.
The Englishman used the 'Moneyball' model to bring in the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, who became world-class players after arriving as relatively low-key signings, and the Reds should jump at the chance of bringing him back.
