'He should retire now' – Mexican media criticize Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández for poor form and off-field issues

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The recent controversy surrounding Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández's sexist remarks has amplified the criticism he’s faced in recent months since returning to his boyhood club, Chivas, after a successful run in Europe and MLS. His second stint has been widely disappointing: just three goals in 34 matches, with little playing time under the various coaches who’ve managed the now 37-year-old striker.

Despite being Mexico’s all-time leading scorer and one of the most accomplished Mexican players to have played in Europe, Hernández has continued to benefit from a level of respect. But with his poor performances and now his off-field controversy – which led to fines from Chivas and the Mexican Football Federation – critics are urging him to step aside.

Among those critics is seven-time Liga MX champion Ricardo ‘Tuca’ Ferretti, now an analyst at ESPN, who had a blunt message: "He should retire now – he should leave football, not let football leave him.”

“I thought this season would go well for him because he had time for a proper preseason,” Ferretti added. “But he had surgery early on, then another issue, and then he pulled something during warm-up. It’s all taking a toll.”

Ferretti says Chivas should not renew his deal after the Apertura 2025 and urged Hernández to protect his legacy: "Because of all the injuries and his current situation, he should really consider retiring. We remember him as a great player in Europe – Real Madrid, Manchester United, Leverkusen, the national team. Let’s not ruin that image."

On FOX Sports, former striker Carlos Hermosillo said Hernández no longer fits into Gabriel Milito’s system and drew a parallel with his own retirement: "I left when I felt I couldn’t perform anymore – I didn’t want to sit on the bench."

Eduardo de la Torre recalled that he considered retirement at 31 due to physical issues and urged Chicharito to do the same: "It’s time to give others a chance."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to FOX Sports Mexico, Chivas does not plan to offer Hernández a new deal when his contract ends this season. Chicharito is currently dealing with a calf issue from his last appearance and is questionable for this weekend’s match, depending on whether he joins full training.

It’s worth noting that Hernández arrived at Chivas with a torn ACL from his time in MLS, delaying his debut in Liga MX. Since then, he’s suffered an ankle injury, multiple muscle strains, a knee sprain, and other knocks that have affected his performance.

In 2025, he’s dealt with a fresh ankle issue, a facial injury, recurring calf problems, and more muscle-related setbacks. The result? Just three goals in 34 games.

At just 15, he has high aspirations. Ahead of the 2025 MLS campaign, he told GOAL that he wants to be "the best player in the world."

Kuldeep 'enjoying' Bazball: 'It has made bowlers plan how to restrict runs'

India’s left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav has said he enjoyed his first taste of England’s Bazball approach in Visakhapatnam because it not only created more wicket-taking opportunities but also made bowlers think about restricting batters in Test cricket.”Usually in Tests you’re not used to teams attacking you with this kind of approach [Bazball], but it also involves you a lot more,” Kuldeep said ahead of the third Test against England starting on February 15 in Rajkot. “As a spinner it makes you more focused on how you want to bowl and what your approach is.”Normally when you play Tests, you don’t worry about batters attacking you, you’re only focused on how you want to get them out. But here the approach is different, they’re in attacking mode so you also have to plan how to restrict them. When they play shots, you have those many opportunities to take wickets. It’s interesting. The last game was my first [against Bazball], I enjoyed it a lot, it’s good for cricket.”Related

The Visakhapatnam Test was only Kuldeep’s ninth Test since he made his debut in March 2017. It was his first in over 15 months. Kuldeep picked up three of his four wickets in the first innings as India took a 143-run lead that helped them level the five-Test series 1-1.”It’s been good,” Kuldeep said with a smile when asked about finally getting a chance in Test cricket. “Whatever Tests I’ve played, I’ve performed well. I have three five-fors, so yeah it feels good when you see the stats. I’m very happy.”The pitches for the first two Tests of this series have not been rank turners and, if that trend continues in Rajkot, Kuldeep could keep his place in the XI even if Ravindra Jadeja returns. Kuldeep’s accuracy and extra bounce made him more effective than Axar Patel in Visakhapatnam.”Am not sure of my position,” he said when asked about his chances of playing in Rajkot. “If I get the opportunity, I’ll be more than happy. I don’t think too much about whether am playing or not. I just enjoy my day and keep working hard. Combination is such a thing that it matters in a team game. As simple as that.”Kuldeep needed no reminders of his previous Test in Rajkot, where he took a five-for against West Indies in 2018.”It’ll be a batting wicket,” he said when asked about the pitch for the upcoming Test against England. ‘It doesn’t mean there’ll be 700-800 runs scored. It’ll be a good wicket. It won’t be a rank turner, it will be a live wicket, good for cricket.”Why has there been a sudden shift in the nature of pitches for this series?”I haven’t played on rank turners, I don’t know what the approach or thought is, it’s a team management decision,” Kuldeep said. “Obviously everyone wants to watch good cricket. I don’t know if I’ll get an opportunity or not, but whether it’s flat wicket or rank turner, I enjoy it. I think batting is also important, not just spin bowling. Fast bowling comes into the game as well. It’s good for cricket. It’s not like you’ll see rank turners only, but hopefully you’ll see it [laughs].”

Perry reaches 300 not out for Australia, open to 400

The allrounder will make a landmark outing against India in Mumbai on Sunday

AAP06-Jan-2024Ellyse Perry is keeping an open mind about the rest of her outstanding international cricket career, saying playing 400 matches could be feasible. The allrounder will become the first Australian woman to make 300 international appearances when India host the second match in the teams’ T20I series in Mumbai on Sunday.Perry is an all-time great of Australian sport and key to the ongoing success of the national women’s team. Asked whether reaching 400 games is a goal, Perry said she had set no ceiling on her playing career.Related

How Sadhu, the girl who was not interested in cricket, dismantled Australia

“I don’t know what’s in store …but if it’s meant to be down the track and I’m still around playing …I’m really open to what happens,” she said from India. “I don’t have a set time frame on it. Either way it doesn’t really matter, it’s just another number.”For as long as I can contribute to the team and it’s something I find really motivating and enjoyable, I’d love to be here.”Perry was left out of Australia’s T20I team early in 2022, but reshaped her game to return as an integral player. The 33-year-old has also bowled less since a serious hamstring injury during the 2020 World Cup. The key for Perry individually, and for the all-powerful Australia team, is to keep evolving.India have beaten Australia in a Test for the first time on this tour and the home side also won their opening T20I clash, while the tourists swept the one-day series in between.”It’s a great time for us, of evolution. You’ve seen a lot of that in the way that Phoebe Litchfield has performed in those one-day matches; Annabel Sutherland, her last 12 months,” Perry said.”That’s something we’re incredibly conscious of – [to] maintain the success we’ve had, but equally evolve that, to look a little bit different in the way the team plays. The game is moving at such a rapid pace. There’s a new environment. In a lot of ways the sky’s the limit in terms of where it can go.”Perry paid tribute to her family, saying she relishes still having net sessions with her dad Mark.”Every time, he bowls me. In general terms, Dad will always have my measure,” she said.Perry has been a key figure in the rapid rise of women’s cricket, which attracted 86,000 fans to the MCG to watch Australia win the 2020 World Cup final.”My first game in Darwin, there were probably about 30 people,” she said, recalling her 2007 debut. “It continues to blow my socks off when stuff like that happens, which has been a true privilege.”

Shoaib Bashir: 'On that wicket, anything is possible'

Offspinner dedicates five-wicket haul to late grandfathers as he braces for fourth-innings challenge

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Feb-2024Shoaib Bashir dedicated his maiden England five-wicket haul to his late grandfathers, as he braced himself for one last big push in the fourth Test in Ranchi, after a day of Indian dominance put the hosts on course for a series-sealing victory.Bashir bowled a marathon 44 overs in India’s first innings in claiming final figures of 5 for 119. That included a 31-over unbroken spell on the second afternoon, in which he claimed the first four of his wickets, and he completed his five-for on the third morning when Akash Deep fell lbw for 9.However, India had already seized the initiative by then, thanks to a key stand of 76 between Kuldeep Yadav and Dhruv Jurel, who top-scored with 90 from 149 balls as an overnight deficit of 134 was reduced to a far more manageable 46.India’s own spinners then cemented their dominance of the day by ripping through England’s second innings to bowl them out for 145, with R Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav sharing nine wickets between them. Bashir was back with ball in hand by the close, serving up a solitary over as Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal picked off 40 untroubled runs from their victory target of 192.Related

Joe Root: 'It means the most when you really have to work for it'

Despite a tough day for his team, Bashir recognises – even at the age of 20 and in his second Test – that he will have to play another key role on the fourth day if England are to have any hope of clawing back the ascendancy, and going to Dharamsala next week with the series locked at 2-2.”Yeah, look, we would have liked to have got one or two wickets in that last period, but me and Harts [Tom Hartley] know we got a job to the tomorrow,” he told TNT at the close. “Ten opportunities to take ten wickets, and on that wicket anything is possible.””Me and Tommy are really excited for the challenge. We saw how Ashwin and [Ravindra] Jadeja bowled on that wicket and we take huge confidence from that. I used to watch these guys when I was a bit younger and they’re world-class spinners. We know us two lads are up against a world-class attack but we’ve got a chance to be heroes.”Irrespective of the result, Bashir acknowledged that his rise to prominence was “surreal”, given that he had played just six first-class fixtures in his entire professional career before his debut in Visakhapatnam, and was only recently playing national county cricket with Berkshire and club cricket in Guildford after being released by Surrey prior to his current stint with Somerset.”It was a very special moment on my journey,” he said of his fifth wicket. “Two years ago, I wouldn’t have thought anything like this [would happen] but that was really special.”I just want to dedicate this to my two late granddads who passed away a year and a bit ago,” he added. “They used to watch Test cricket all the time on TV, sitting in front of the TV on the couch. And their wish was to watch me play, and that didn’t happen. So yeah, it was quite emotional, but I’m grateful.”Despite his rapid rise, Bashir insisted he had not once felt out of place in an England dressing-room that includes one player, James Anderson, who made his Test debut before he was born, and several others – Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow among them – who have been fixtures of the Test side for more than a decade.”I used to see these guys when I was a little kid,” Bashir said. “So to be in that dressing-room, they give you so much confidence. Stokesy and the lads are brilliant, even if that’s to go out to bat as well. It just gets the best out of you, and it’s just a wonderful group to be a part of.”The boys were up for it and we’re really excited for tomorrow because it could bring a lot of joy. The mood is really good.”Asked if England still believed they could win, Bashir replied: “Massively. Me and Tommy are really excited for tomorrow. That pitch is deteriorating quite a bit now. We saw some pop from a good length and some roll. That’s good signs for us and we’re really excited.”We’re two tall spinners and we have tall release points. Stokesy and Baz picked us for a reason. We’ve just got to go out tomorrow and hopefully win a Test match.”

He told BBC Sport: "We've been linked with so many players and if we'd been speaking to every player we've been linked with, I don't think we'd have had an hour to sleep over the last month. Some are true, some aren't. But we're just going about our business and trying to get a squad which can represent the club in this division this season."

Coady is not the only player being linked with a move to Wrexham currently. Ipswich Town's Nathan Broadhead is also reportedly close to a move to Wales, while the Red Dragons are also thought to be considering a blockbuster bid for Sheffield United striker Kieffer Moore.

Vanuatu stun Zimbabwe to kick off T20 World Cup Qualifier

Vanuatu, ranked 30th, stunned Zimbabwe (12th) on the opening day of the Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier by beating them by six wickets after bowling them out for their lowest T20I score of 61. The result will rank among the biggest sporting success stories of Vanuatu, a small island nation with a population of little more than 300,000, who are appearing at a World Cup – men’s or women’s – Qualifier for the first time. This was also the first time Vanuatu had played a match against a team outside of the East-Asia Pacific (EAP) region and they looked entirely at home in Abu Dhabi. Their spinners, Vanessa Vira and Nasimana Navaika, shared seven wickets between them against a Zimbabwean line-up that understandably appeared to be deer in the headlights. With floodlights only installed at Harare Sports Club last July, they have scant experience of playing day-night cricket, and struggled to negotiate Vanuatu’s slower bowlers.Related

Offspinner Vira made the first incision when she had Modester Mupachikwa caught behind in the second over but Zimbabwe’s problems really began three overs later. Medium-pacer Rachel Andrew bowled Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano and captain Mary-Anne Musonda with successive deliveries. Sharne Mayers looked good for her 12-ball 16 but fell in the last over of the powerplay, which Zimbabwe finished on 38 for 4.Legspinner Navaika then took four wickets in 10 balls to register career-best figures of 4 for 13 and leave Zimbabwe in tatters at 55 for 8 after 11 overs. They dragged themselves over 60 but only just and were bowled out in the 14th over.Nasimana Navaika wrecked Zimbabwe’s innings with four wickets•ICC via Getty Images

In response, Vanuatu lost their opening batters, Andrew and Valenta Langiatu, who was dropped at slip the ball before being caught, in the powerplay, which ended on a cautious 25 for 3. They almost lost their captain Selina Solman to what seemed a hamstring niggle in the ninth over but she batted on and shared in a 19-run stand with Navaika before top-edging Audrey Mazvishaya, who did not concede a run for her first 12 balls. Her third over cost seven runs and left Vanuatu on the brink of victory. But they did not get there without Mazvishaya having one more say on the game. She bowled Navaika at the start of the 16th over with Vanuatu four runs away. They got there in the 17th over with 21 balls to spare and earned a historic victory that blows open Group B of the qualifier and continues the rise and rise of Vanuatu. In the last seven months, Vanuatu have earned morale-boosting victories over teams much stronger than them on paper. In September, they beat regional rivals Papua New Guinea, who are ranked 11th, for the first time on their way to winning the EAP Qualifier to earn their place in Abu Dhabi. They were due to travel with borrowed or donated gear but a successful crowd-funding campaign launched by their operations manager Jamal Vira and marketing manager Hermione Vira raised the equivalent of USD 6,317 to ensure each squad member had their own, new kit for the tournament.

Other results: Sri Lanka, Ireland, Scotland start with wins

Earlier in the day, favourites Sri Lanka successfully defended 122 against Thailand, who they bowled out for their third lowest T20I total – 55. Sri Lanka were hamstrung by two run-outs in an innings where no one scored more than 29. But left-arm seamer Udeshika Prabodhani and offspinner Inoshi Priyadharshani shared five wickets between them to earn Sri Lanka a comfortable win.In Group B, Ireland opened their campaign with a six-wicket win over UAE, who they kept to 105 for 9. Contributions from Ireland top three meant that even when they lost three wickets for seven runs, they were always in charge of the chase. Orla Prendergast, in her 49th T20I, saw them home in the 17th over. The evening’s other match saw Scotland dominate Uganda after half-centuries from Saskia Horley and Ailsa Lister took them to an imposing total of 161 for 3. Uganda had no answers against the left-arm seam of Rachel Slater (5 for 17) and went from 10 for 3 to 35 for 7 and 52 all out to suffer a 109-run loss.

West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph has joined Lucknow Super Giants as replacement for England quick Mark Wood. He will join Super Giants for INR 3 crore, an IPL statement on Saturday said.ESPNcricinfo understands that the ECB pulled Wood, a centrally contracted player, out of IPL 2024 to manage his workload, with the T20 World Cup scheduled in June and England hosting West Indies and Sri Lanka for Tests in the home summer. Recently, the ECB had prevented Jofra Archer from being a part of the IPL 2024 auction as it manages his comeback from injury leading up to the T20 World Cup.Super Giants had signed Wood in the auction before the 2022 season for INR 7.50 crore. He, however, missed that season because of an elbow injury. In IPL 2023, Wood played four matches and picked up 11 wickets at an average of 11.82.Joseph made his West Indies debut in the drawn series against Australia, dismissing Steven Smith with his first ball in Test cricket, in a game West Indies lost in Adelaide. He then became a worldwide phenomenon when he took a seven-wicket haul in the final innings despite an injured foot to give West Indies a dramatic eight-run win at the Gabba in the second Test. It was West Indies’ first Test win in Australia since 1997.Joseph had been signed by Dubai Capitals for the ongoing ILT20 season before West Indies’ tour of Australia, but was subsequently ruled out because of the toe injury he suffered in the Brisbane Test when a Mitchell Starc yorker struck him. But his performance in Australia has since landed him a deal with Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL, which starts on February 17.While Joseph has just played two T20 games in his professional career, and doesn’t have a wicket to show yet, West Indies white-ball coach Daren Sammy has indicated that Joseph could find a berth in the T20 World Cup squad, saying the fast bowler has “created a good headache” for the selectors.Apart from Joseph, the Super Giants’ fast-bowling line-up has Naveen-ul-Haq, Mohsin Khan, David Willey, Shivam Mavi, Yash Thakur and Yudhvir Singh. They also have allrounders Marcus Stoinis, Kyle Mayers and India’s Under-19 World Cupper Arshin Kulkarni, who can give them quite a few overs. Though just two seasons old in the IPL, Super Giants have been one of the best-performing teams, making the playoffs and finishing third both in 2022 and 2023.
