Nahida's record-breaking five-for takes Bangladesh past Pakistan

Nahida returned 5 for 8 as Bangladesh scripted a five-wicket win over Pakistan in the first of three T20Is

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Oct-2023Left-arm spinner Nahida Akter returned the best figures in women’s T20I cricket for Bangladesh as well as against Pakistan, her 5 for 8 in 3.4 overs stopping the opposition at just 82 and setting up a five-wicket win for Bangladesh in the first game of the series in Chattogram. Nahida, in fact, now has the top two returns in women’s T20Is for Bangladesh, this one topping the 5 for 12 she got against Kenya last year.Asked to bat first, Pakistan lost Sidra Ameen early to Nahida, but Muneeba Ali (16), Bismah Maroof (20) and captain Nida Dar (14) took them to a decent position, and while the going was slow, 56 at the end of the 13th over was a good platform. But Maroof, the top-scorer for Pakistan, was run-out first ball of the 14th over, and Pakistan lost their last seven wickets for just 26 runs, Nahida picking up three of them, having added Muneeba to her bag earlier. At home, the modest chase was unlikely to trouble Bangladesh, but they also lost an early wicket in the form of Shamima Sultana, who was run out in the fourth over.Murshida Khatun (23), Sobhana Mostary (16) and Nigar Sultana (26 not out), however, took control of the chase after that, and small but useful partnerships carried Bangladesh to the target with three balls in hand. There was a bit of a collapse, from 57 for 2 to 63 for 4 and 76 for 5, but with Nigar batting till the end, Bangladesh took the lead in the series. The next game of the three-match series, which will be followed by three ODIs, will be played on Friday, also in Chattogram.

Tom Abell steps down as Somerset captain after seven seasons in charge

Tom Abell has stepped down from the Somerset captaincy with immediate effect, after struggling for form during the 2023 season.Abell, 29, was handed the Somerset captaincy ahead of the 2017 season, and led the club to victory in the 2019 Royal London Cup, and a trio of runners-up spots in red-ball competitions – a second-place finish in the County Championship in 2018 and 2019, and the final of the Bob Willis Trophy in the Covid-affected summer of 2020.Somerset did collect silverware in 2023 with victory in the Vitality Blast – however, Lewis Gregory had taken over the reins from Abell following their run to the semi-finals in the previous season, and with a disappointing seventh-place finish in the Championship coinciding with a downturn in his own form, Abell has decided to relinquish his role.”I’m stepping down with a heavy heart,” Abell said. “As a Somerset boy it’s been a massive privilege to captain the club and the experience has been incredible. It’s not been an easy decision, but I’ve thought about it a lot and I believe that it is in the best interests of the team and the club. Sometimes change can be a good thing and I think that now is the right time. My decision is entirely based on what I feel is best for us moving forward.”During the last seven seasons there have been some great times and some tough times. I’m so grateful for the support that I’ve received, and Andy Hurry and Jason Kerr have been tremendous allies. I’ve had a tremendous support network behind me, especially my family, and I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of some great teams with some great players, who have helped to keep me in the job for so long!”Abell came close to securing international honours earlier this year, when he was named in England’s white-ball squad for their tour of Bangladesh in March, only to withdraw with a side injury.”I didn’t have a great season in 2023 and it can be tough to lead when you’re not necessarily content with your own performance,” he said. “This will give me the opportunity to get back to where I need to be, which is contributing to Somerset winning games of cricket.”Hurry, Somerset’s Director of Cricket, said that Abell had led the club with “distinction” during his seven seasons in charge.”Everyone connected with Somerset will agree that he has been an absolute credit to the club both on and off the field,” Hurry said. “His conduct, commitment, leadership and dedication have been exemplary during his time in the role, and he has written himself into the history of the club forever.”

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Bayern made an opening offer of €40 million (£34m/$46m) plus €5m (£4m/$6m) in bonuses to sign Stuttgart striker Woltemade. However, Stuttgart rejected the bid immediately, with the board stating they will only enter personal negotiations if Die Roten table an offer of at least €65m (£55m/$74m), according to . Talks have so far included multiple calls and an online meeting between Bayern executives Max Eberl and Jan-Christian Dreesen, and Stuttgart's Fabian Wohlgemuth and Alexander Wehrle.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The German striker's contract runs until 2028 and includes no release clause, giving Stuttgart complete control over his future. They see him as a vital part of their project for the 2025-26 season after a breakout year in which he netted 17 goals. But Bayern, who are in search of long-term attacking options, view Woltemade as a priority signing and have already reached an agreement with the player.

  • WHAT WOHLGEMUTH SAID?

Stuttgart sporting director Wohlgemuth insisted that, while things can change, the expectation is for Woltemade to stay: “It is absolutely the most likely scenario that Nick will wear our colors in the 2025-26 season. He is still a Stuttgart player, and we assume that nothing will change in that regard for the coming year.”

WHAT NEXT FOR BAYERN AND WOLTEMADE?

The Bavarians are expected to return with an improved offer this week. While Stuttgart hold the upper hand contractually, Woltemade’s desire to move could add pressure. All eyes are on Bayern’s next move, whether they’ll match the €65m price tag or walk away from the chase.

PSG player ratings vs Chelsea: Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia go missing as European champions embarrassed in Club World Cup final defeat

Luis Enrique's side were handily beaten by their English opposition as they failed to add the global title to their 2024-25 treble

Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain failed to add the Club World Cup trophy to their ever-growing collection as they were beaten 3-0 by a Cole Palmer-inspired Chelsea in Sunday's final. PSG, who were heavy favourites heading into the game, were absolutely stunned by Enzo Maresca's men on the day, being blanked in the attack while the English club countered their high-press system with ease to secure the title.

Palmer opened the scoring after 22 minutes, slotting home with his left foot from the edge of the box, and the England international doubled Chelsea's lead eight minutes later, finding the back of the net once again with an identical finish after leaving the PSG defence for dead.

On the verge of half-time, the Blues added a third, with Palmer turning provider as he delivered a delightful ball to Joao Pedro, who chipped PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma for his third goal in two appearances for Chelsea since he joined from Brighton.

PSG tried to fight back in the second half as Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha were denied by Robert Sanchez before tempers flared late on as Joao Neves was sent off after pulling Marc Cucurella's hair.

GOAL rates PSG's players from MetLife Stadium…

Gianluigi Donnarumma (5/10):

He could do very little about the goals, though he maybe could have anticipated Palmer's finishes a little better. Twice made fine saves to deny Delap in the second half.

Achraf Hakimi (5/10):

Some truly world-class moments on the ball from the Moroccan, but he struggled to break free of the man-marking of Neto all game. Locked out of the match, and he never figured out how to jump back in.

Marquinhos (6/10):

Some really strong moments, but was often covering for the lapses in judgement from Beraldo and Mendes, making it tough to assert himself.

Lucas Beraldo (5/10):

Continued in the absence of the suspended Pacho but really struggled to contain both Palmer and Joao Pedro. A performance that left a lot to be desired.

Nuno Mendes (4/10):

Had his hands full with Gusto all game, most notably when he was beaten in the build-up to the opening goal. Struggled to influence the game with his usual defensive prowess while being caught out in the attack on numerous occasions.

Fabian Ruiz (5/10):

Caught out of position for Chelsea's third, and otherwise struggled to combat the intense midfield pairing of James and Caicedo.

Vitinha (5/10):

Shredded by Palmer for Chelsea's second and caught behind the play on their third, he had a rough night handling the physicality and pace of the right side of the Blues' attack.

João Neves (3/10):

Sent off in the 85th minute after a hair-pulling incident with Cucurella. Summed up an extraordinarily poor performance from the young Portugal midfielder.

AFPAttack

Desire Doue (5/10):

Squandered a fantastic chance in the first half, but otherwise had a really quiet day. Struggled to compete with Cucurella all match.

Ousmane Dembele (4/10):

Completely blanked in the final third by Chelsea. For a Ballon d'Or favourite, he did not play to the level expected of him on the day.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (4/10):

PSG's first player to be substituted, the Georgia international had little to no impact on the match. Completely cut out of the game by James and Gusto.

Bradley Barcola (5/10):

Subbed on midway through the second half, but he made very little impact on the match.

Senny Mayulu (5/10):

Replaced Ruiz with 17 minutes to spare, but not much he could do.

Warren Zaire-Emery (5/10):

Subbed on for Hakimi alongside Mayulu.

Goncalo Ramos (5/10):

Brought on to try and get a goal back with 17 minutes left, but barely touched the ball.

Luis Enrique (3/10):

Completely outclassed by Maresca on the touchline. He failed to make quick adjustments throughout the match, and never figured out how to free up his world-class full-back pairing. A defeat he will remember for quite some time.

Brisbane Heat make their sixth WBBL finals in a row

Jonassen’s four-for helps them beat Sydney Thunder by 22 runs

AAP and ESPNcricinfo staff24-Nov-2023A star turn from spinner Jess Jonassen lifted Brisbane Heat to a 22-run win over Sydney Thunder and into the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) finals.Chasing 160 for 8, Thunder fell short with Jonassen snaring four wickets in Friday’s fixture at Adelaide Oval. Heat’s victory in their last regular-season game ensured they reached the finals – they were in third spot on 16 points.Thunder are fourth on 15 points with one game remaining, two points clear of fifth-placed Hobart Hurricanes who also have one match left before the finals. But Hurricanes would need a massive win over ladder leaders Adelaide Strikers on Sunday to boost their run-rate ahead of Thunder, who meet Sydney Sixers in their last game before the playoffs. The team that finishes top will gain direct entry into the final which they will host on December 2. The second-placed side will host the Eliminator and Challenger finals.Jonassen was pivotal in Friday’s win, taking 4 for 26 from her four overs, after Thunder openers Chamari Athapaththu and Phoebe Litchfield gave the Sydney-siders a brisk start. But Thunder lost six wickets in an eight-over span to lose momentum as Jonassen turned the screws. She claimed the key duo of Athapaththu and Marizanne Kapp as the chase stalled.Earlier, Heat’s Bess Heath made 29 from 25 balls to top score during an even batting effort. Seven batters made more than 12 with opener Georgia Redmayne (21 from 21), Amelia Kerr (20 from 17) and Laura Harris (19 from 9) making handy contributions.Heat’s innings finished with a flourish as Georgia Voll smacked a six in her rapid-fire 18 not out from only eight balls.

ILT20 bans Naveen-ul-Haq for breaching agreement with Sharjah Warriors

Naveen will instead take part in the SA20 league, which runs almost concurrently with the ILT20

Naveen-ul-Haq has been banned by the UAE’s ILT20 for 20 months for breaching his player agreement with Sharjah Warriors when he “refused to sign the retention notice” for the second season of the tournament, to be played in January-February next year. The decision effectively bars Naveen from playing in the ILT20 in 2024 and 2025, but he has signed with Durban’s Super Giants – owned by the group that owns IPL team Lucknow Super Giants, of which he is a part – in the South African SA20 league, which will be played almost concurrently with the ILT20.Warriors, who had signed Naveen on for the inaugural edition of the league in 2023, had “earlier this year sent him a retention notice on the same terms and conditions,” an ILT20 statement said. “Sharjah Warriors approached the ILT20 to intervene in this dispute. The ILT20 first initiated a mediation process through an independent third-party mediator, however the mediation failed.”The league’s disciplinary committee, comprising ILT20 chief executive David White, head of security and anti-corruption Col Azam, and Zayed Abbas, member of the Emirates Cricket Board, heard the points of view of both Warriors and Naveen and examined the evidence before them before communicating their verdict.”We do not take pride in making this announcement but all parties are expected to comply with their contractual commitments and recognize that non-compliance can cause damage to the other party,” White said. “Unfortunately, Naveen-ul-Haq failed to honour his contractual obligations with the Sharjah Warriors and as such the league had no option but to impose this 20-month ban on him.”The disciplinary proceedings against Naveen were conducted in a transparent manner and both parties involved were given opportunities to prepare and present their submissions.”Naveen was one of the better performers for Warriors in the 2023 season, finishing as their joint-highest wicket-taker (11 wickets) along with Junaid Siddique. Warriors, however, had a rough time of it, winning just three of their ten games to miss the playoffs.

Warner: 'I had Lord's penciled in as my last Test'

“Hi all, this is my last resort,” he wrote on Instagram, alongside a video, “but my backpack, which contained my Baggy Green, has been taken from my luggage, which was transported to Melbourne airport and flown on @qantas to Sydney a few days ago. @qantas have said they checked their cameras and have not seen anyone open our bags and take the backpack, however they do have blind spots. If you are the person, who was either working for the company driving it to and from the airport or working for @qantas and have, by chance, just wanted the backpack, I have one for. I would be grateful if this were returned asap. Thanks.””Please reach out to Cricket Australia or myself via my social media and I’m happy to give this to you if you return my baggy greens,” Warner added in the video. The bag is understood to contain two caps, including the one that Warner has worn for the majority of his 111 Tests. In 2017 he was provided with a replacement cap when his original could not be located before his wife, Candice, found it in a bag at home.”I think there should be a countrywide search right now from the Australian Government,” Pakistan captain Shan Masood said. “We might need the best of detectives to get that back.”Because he’s been a great ambassador and he deserves every bit of respect and every bit of celebration for his unbelievable career. He’s an example to openers. And just personally I love watching him bat and love watching him play.”Nick Hockley, the Cricket Australia CEO, said: “I implore anyone with information about the location of Dave’s bag and baggy green caps to come forward so he can proudly wear his cap for a final time at the SCG.”Speaking a few minutes before the news of Warner’s baggy green became public, captain Pat Cummins lauded him as a game-changer in the Test format.”I think everyone will think of him in their own way,” he said. “Personally I think of him when he first came on the scene and really changed Test cricket. He was striking at over 70 which is unheared of, especially for an opening batter, averaging 40 or 50. That’s the Davey I remember – walking out there and taking the game away from the opposition in the space of an hour or two, and doing it for over a decade.”His longevity is something that gets overlooked. Just the bulk of cricket he’s played over the last 12-13 years is pretty much more than anyone else in the world. Every time he walks out there, he’s competitive and ready to go. Just a champion of Australian sport. Hopefully he gets a good send off this week.”Cummins confirmed that Australia would take an unchanged XI into the Sydney Test as they look to secure the series 3-0.
