Bancroft joins Warner at Thunder, Hatzoglou to Hurricanes

Cameron Bancroft has made a bold move in the BBL leaving two-time reigning champions Perth Scorchers to join former Australia Test opening partner David Warner at Sydney Thunder on a three-year deal.Scorchers have also lost legspinner Peter Hatzoglou who has signed with Hobart Hurricanes despite being a key part of the Scorchers squad in their back-to-back titles.Bancroft was a vital cog in the Scorchers’ title last year having begun the season running the drinks after being dropped from the side during their successful 2021-22 campaign. He played the last 11 games of the season and made 357 runs at 51.00, striking at 140, including four half-centuries. He made a career-best 95 not out in the final game of the home and away season before scoring 53 not out in the Qualifier against Sydney Sixers to help Scorchers bank a home final which they won against Brisbane Heat. But despite one of his best-ever BBL seasons, and being third all-time on Scorchers’ career runscorers list, the depth of top-order batting at Scorchers saw Bancroft look elsewhere for more long-term contract security. He was courted by a number of clubs but has landed at Thunder where he looks set to play alongside Warner again despite the pair’s strained relationship dating back to the Sandpaper incident in Cape Town in 2018 when the pair were Test opening partners. They have since opened the batting together for Australia in the 2019 Ashes but the Sandpaper incident and long-term fallout still casts a shadow over the pair.Peter Hatzoglou bowls•Cricket Australia via Getty Images

Meanwhile, Hatzoglou has also left Scorchers to join Hurricanes for the upcoming BBL season. Hatzoglou joined Scorchers ahead of the 2021-22 season after crossing from Melbourne Renegades. He was a key part of Scorchers’ 2021-22 title where they played almost entirely on the east coast of Australia during the Covid-19-affected season. Scorchers played two spinners for most of that season and Hatzoglou formed a formidable partnership with Ashton Agar in the middle overs, including taking 1 for 13 from three overs in the 2021-22 final against Sydney Sixers. But he played just 10 matches last season and was not in the XI for the winning final as Perth opted for a four-pronged pace attack and a spinning allrounder in Cooper Connolly at No.7 on their fast, bouncy home track at Perth Stadium.Hurricanes look set to use Hatzoglou alongside unusual left-arm orthodox spinner Paddy Dooley who had a breakout season last year.”I’m really excited for my next chapter in the BBL with the Hurricanes,” Hatzoglou said.”I’m one of those players whose career has followed a more non-traditional path to get to the point I’m at now, so I’m just really thankful for every opportunity that comes my way.”Watching from afar over the past couple of seasons, it is obvious that the Hurricanes have pretty much all the right ingredients within their program already. I’m looking forward to coming in, getting to know some of the guys and the staff a bit better, and contributing whatever small part I can to hopefully the ultimate on-field success.”Hatzoglou has been playing in the T20 Blast in England for Glamorgan recently after being drafted in as an overseas replacement for Australia quick Michael Neser.Out of contract West Australian left-arm swing bowler Joel Paris is set to leave Hurricanes and is set to sign with Melbourne Stars. Paris played just 12 matches in two seasons with Hobart after previously playing 25 games with Perth Scorchers. He is likely to be reunited with former WA and Scorchers teammate Nathan Coulter-Nile who is set to sign a one-year contract extension with Stars for BBL 13 after his previous four-year deal expired at the end of last season.Sydney Thunder BBL 13 squad: Cameron Bancroft, Ollie Davies, Matt Gilkes, Chris Green, Nathan McAndrew, Blake Nikitaras, Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Gurinder Sandhu, Jason Sangha, Tanveer Sangha, David WarnerHobart Hurricanes BBL 13 squad: Tim David, Paddy Dooley, Nathan Ellis, Caleb Jewell, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Mitch Owen, Billy Stanlake, Matthew Wade

Better than Marmoush: 9/10 Man City star has made himself undroppable

After Erling Haaland had squandered a first half penalty and AFC Bournemouth raced into a one goal lead courtesy of star striker Evanilson, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City looked set for a demoralising FA Cup exit.

But, a terrific second half turnaround saw the Citizens eventually run out as a determined 2-1 victors to soar into the semi-finals, with the aforementioned Nordic centre-forward atoning for his spot-kick howler by levelling up proceedings in the South Coast sunshine.

The lethal City number nine wasn’t the only striker to get in the on the goalscoring act, as the winning goal of the afternoon would fall to new recruit Omar Marmoush a matter of minutes after he came on in place of Haaland.

Marmoush's performance in numbers

Marmoush has been an instant success donning his new colours, with the ex-Eintracht Frankfurt forward already a reliable option Guardiola can throw into contests.

Indeed, the electric Egyptian has five goals next to his name from 11 City outings, with his goal contribution numbers for the season – which includes his whirlwind output in Germany – up to a staggering 40 goals and assists from 35 clashes.

Kepa Arrizabalaga could perhaps have done better with this effort, but the clinical City number seven wouldn’t have cared one bit when wheeling away in celebration, knowing his strike had sealed his side’s progression through to Wembley.

It really was a game where the substitutes stood out for the star-studded visitors, with 20-year-old sensation Nico O’Reilly arguably putting in the performance of the game when handed the full second half.

O'Reilly's performance in numbers

Everyone associated with the reigning Premier League champions knows that this summer could be one of immense change as some of the current declining crop move on from the Etihad.

Thankfully, stars such as O’Reilly are proving to the City faithful that the future can be bright with a next generation of talent coming through.

From just 30 touches of the ball, the promising City number 75 would wreak absolute havoc, with one dart forward early into the second half finished off by Haaland, before then teeing up Marmoush for 2-1.

Away from shining in an attacking capacity, O’Reilly also won his fair share of duels with three successfully won, on top of also winning two tackles to preserve his side’s slender advantage right until the full-time whistle was sounded.

Having picked up three goals in the FA Cup this season too away from his heroics against the Cherries, it now feels like a matter of time before the 20-year-old is regularly picked by Guardiola in the Premier League, with his versatility to play in a number of different roles potentially coming in handy.

The Manchester-born starlet has lined up as an attacking midfielder and striker primarily for the U23s, but the 9/10 performer – as was the post-match rating gifted to him by Manchester Evening News journalist Simon Bajkowski – has even lined up in the left-back spot in the senior set-up to date which more than proves his flexible nature.

With the future of Guardiola’s men very much a topic of conversation, O’Reilly’s time for more consistent first-team minutes must come very soon, especially if he can continue to change games in the same manner he did against Andoni Iraola’s stern hosts.

Indeed, although he did not start today’s game, he’s made himself undroppable heading into their midweek fixture. He simply has to be on the team sheet.

Zaka Ashraf, Najam Sethi set to contest PCB leadership again

A change in PCB leadership could be imminent as the management committee led by Najam Sethi begins the last two weeks of its tenure, and the leading contender to replace him is his old rival and former board chairman Zaka Ashraf. On June 7, Sethi met Pakistan’s prime minister Shahbaz Sharif at his residence in Islamabad to brief him about the PCB’s progress over the last five months. A few kilometres away, Ashraf had a meeting with the federal minister for inter-provincial coordination (IPC), Ehsan ur Rehman Mazari, who acts as a conduit between the PCB and the government. With the IPC being the ministry that deals with sports in Pakistan, Mazari confirmed Zaka was being nominated to head the PCB.Sethi and Ashraf have history tussling for the PCB leadership; the two of them were involved in a protracted legal battle for the position in 2013 and 2014. That issue was settled when former prime minister Nawaz Sharif ousted Ashraf and brought in Sethi. Now, Sethi is backed by the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML – N) while Ashraf has the support of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and both parties are part of the coalition that has formed the country’s government.Related

  • Arthur announced as Pakistan team director in part-time role

  • Ramiz Raja removed as PCB chairman

“When this government was formed, it was decided that parties [in the alliance] who have respective ministries will have a say in naming the man for the respective job,” Mazari said on Wednesday. “Hence, IPC is with PPP, so we will have our man [in the PCB]. Also, Sethi’s nomination [for the full term] is a conflict of interest as he is heading the management committee tasked to carry out elections but they are becoming a part of the process and getting them elected.”The management committee headed by Sethi has been running the PCB since Ramiz Raja was removed as chairman and the board’s 2019 constitution was scrapped in December last year. Sethi’s committee was initially given 120 days to bring back the 2014 version of the PCB constitution and reinstate the regional and services structure in domestic cricket. The committee was also given a mandate to form a board of governors and elect a chairman.Over the last four months, Sethi has been instrumental in hiring a predominantly overseas coaching staff for Pakistan, with Mickey Arthur as part time director of cricket.Sethi’s committee was then given a two-month extension to complete its tasks and that extension will end on June 22. Its biggest undertaking was to conduct elections across all of Pakistan’s provinces. It required the PCB to form a board of governors comprising ten members: four out of the 16 regional representatives, four representatives of services organisations, and two members directly nominated by the PCB patron, which is the prime minister. The term of each member of the BoG is three years – equivalent to one term of the chairman. The committee wasn’t far from completing the process but ran into legal trouble after several regional clubs lodged complaints that questioned the fairness of the election process. Three members of the management committee – Tanvir Ahmed, who has been elected president of Larkana region; Gul Zada, from Peshawar region; and Shakil Sheikh, who is in the running in Islamabad – working from the PCB headquarters are at the centre of the issue.Once the board is formed, the prime minister will use his discretion to nominate two names, of which one will become PCB chairman through an electoral process within the board.

Not just Bamford: 49ers must sell Leeds dud who's rinsed them of £20m

With the end of the season edging ever closer, Leeds United boss Daniel Farke will have some key decisions to make regardless of what division they find themselves in next season.

The Whites currently sit at the top of the Championship, two points clear of third place with eight games to go, undoubtedly in pole position to end their two-year exile from the Premier League.

The German has undoubtedly been boosted in his attempts due to the excellent work conducted by the hierarchy in recent times, with the likes of Ao Tanaka arriving and seamlessly fitting into the starting eleven.

However, numerous players are likely to be moved on from Elland Road to allow for any further investment, subsequently taking the club to the next level in the process.

One player in particular is expected to depart Yorkshire, which is hardly a surprise given his lack of first-team action throughout the 2024/25 league season.

Patrick Bamford could leave Leeds this summer

Patrick Bamford is a player who captured the hearts of the fanbase back in 2020/21 when he notched 17 Premier League goals in the club’s first season back in the top flight.

However, he’s since struggled to match such performance levels, only scoring the same tally, but over the last four campaigns combined – none of which have come in 2024/25.

The 31-year-old hasn’t featured since the New Year’s Day draw with Blackburn Rovers, still sitting on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, only managing a total of 11 appearances to date.

He was strongly linked with a move to Wrexham in January, but no move materialised, given the lack of action this campaign, it looks almost certain the club will look to move him on – especially because of his £80k-per-week wages.

However, it’s likely he will be followed out of the door by numerous other players this summer, with Farke needing to offload one player alongside the striker.

The player who Leeds need to offload this summer

Leeds have invested heavily into the squad during their recent stint in the top-flight, trying to consolidate their place amongst some of the best clubs in world football.

Some of the investments have been worthwhile, with the likes of Georgino Rutter, Junior Firpo and Raphinha all being worth every penny given the time spent in Yorkshire.

However, the same can’t be said for Jack Harrison, who ultimately has struggled since his permanent move to Yorkshire, often being outshone by others around him.

He spent three years on loan at the club from Manchester City, before forking out £11m for his services back in the summer of 2021, struggling to replicate the form during his temporary stint.

Harrison only managed to register 16 goals in his 80 appearances throughout the two years prior to suffering relegation, jumping ship on spending the last two years on loan at Everton.

Jack Harrison for Everton

The 28-year-old has been unable to impress at Goodison Park, registering eight combined goals and assists in the last two years, simply not at the level required of a top-flight side.

During his spell on Merseyside, Harrison has been labelled “abysmal” by one journalist, highlighting how disappointing he’s been during his temporary spell away from Yorkshire.

His time at Leeds played a massive role in their success under Marcelo Bielsa, but given his weekly wage of £90k, he’s earned over £9m during his time at the club, which when coupled with his transfer fee has seen him bleed the club id £20m.

If the Whites are to be a success in the Premier League, should they get there by the end of the season, then it’s important Farke is able to invest and improve his current side.

Harrison ultimately isn’t the answer and his lack of impact out on loan and his extortionate wages hands the 49ers a huge reason to offload him ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Kane added yet another milestone to his glittering international career, scoring a record-breaking goal for England in their 3-1 defeat to Senegal on Tuesday night. The Three Lions skipper found the net early in the match, giving him goals in each of the first four matches under new national team coach Tuchel, a feat never before accomplished by any England player.

Despite Kane’s landmark moment, England’s overall performance was below par. Senegal responded swiftly and ruthlessly. Ismaila Sarr levelled the match after slipping past Kyle Walker and finishing from close range. In the second half, Habib Diarra struck in the 62nd minute to give Senegal a deserved lead. The final blow came deep into injury time, when Cheikh Sabaly finished off a fluid counter-attack, leaving Tuchel with much to ponder.

INEOS now serious about signing "amazing" ace as Man Utd plot £17m discount

Aiming to rebuild their current side in the vision of Ruben Amorim, INEOS and Manchester United are now reportedly serious about signing one particular midfielder amid a potential £17m discount this summer.

Man Utd plot £17m discount

As Sir Jim Ratcliffe continues to cut costs, it’s fair to say that Manchester United’s financial problems are no secret these days. However, the British billionaire has made it pretty clear that any money made by the club is likely to be reinvested into Amorim’s side rather than what he sees as needless costs – and that could yet see the Red Devils enjoy a busy summer.

Thrives in a back three: Man Utd make contact to sign "impressive" £25m ace

He could solve Amorim’s biggest problem.

ByTom Cunningham Mar 28, 2025

The reports have already been coming thick and fast, with names such as Ardon Jashari and Hugo Ekitike threatening to steal the headlines as of late. The latter would be a particularly impressive signing given the growing interest in his signature and the form that he has found himself in at Eintracht Frankfurt this season.

It’s not just Amorim’s frontline which needs key reinforcements, however. As Kobbie Mainoo continues to deliberate over signing a new deal at the club, those at Old Trafford have also set their sights on a potential replacement who’d also be an upgrade on Manuel Ugarte.

According to Stretty News, INEOS are now serious about signing Morten Hjulmand this summer, with Manchester United plotting to land a £17m discount for his signature.

Morten Hjulmand in action.

The Sporting CP midfielder’s valuation is reportedly set as high as €80m (£67m), but Manchester United believe they can negotiate a deal worth just €60m (£50m) this summer in what would be quite the coup.

Amorim already knows Hjulmand well from his Sporting days, of course, and could now be reunited with his former midfielder at a much-needed time. The Dane’s arrival would undoubtedly go a long way towards fixing United’s midfield.

"Amazing" Hjulmand is better than Ugarte

Despite only signing Ugarte last year in a transfer saga which lasted almost the entirety of the summer, Manchester United could be about to sign an impressive upgrade on the former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder. However, whether that means a new partner for last summer’s arrival or a place on Amorim’s bench remains to be seen.

Compared to the current Manchester United man, Hjulmand has enjoyed a better pass percentage, more key passes per 90 and has been dispossessed fewer times on average, according to WhoScored. Going forward, in particular, the Sporting star would make a far greater impact on a blunt United side compared to the safer Ugarte.

Dubbed “amazing value for money” by analyst Ben Mattinson when discussing Sporting’s deal to sign the Dane, it’s now Manchester United who are looking to land a discounted deal and welcome Hjulmand.

Tottenham set to bid £34m for Richarlison replacement who is keen on moving

Tottenham Hotspur are ready to test the water with an offer to sign a potential replacement for exit-linked forward Richarlison, and it is believed the Spurs target is keen on a big move elsewhere this summer.

Tottenham prepared to sanction cut-price Richarlison sale

The Brazilian was linked with a move away from N17 last summer, with clubs in Saudi Arabia displaying a public interest, but Richarlison opted to remain in north London and fight for his place under Ange Postecoglou.

Reports suggest this could be the South American’s final season at Spurs, with Everton said to be planning talks to sign Richarlison early on in the summer window as they prepare for life in a state-of-the-art new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock.

Richarlison injured for Tottenham

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is apparently prepared to take a £20 million loss on the 27-year-old’s sale this summer as well. Tottenham are willing to sanction Richarlison’s sale for £40 million, far beneath the £60 million they paid to sign him from Everton in 2022, according to GiveMeSport.

With Everton lurking in the background for Richarlison’s signature, there are now reports emerging of the Lilywhites scouring for possible replacements. As per CaughtOffside, Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo is firmly in Spurs’ thinking.

Tottenham set to bid £34 million for Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo

According to their information, Semenyo is one of Tottenham’s priorities to replace Richarlison, following his excellent campaign under Andoni Iraola at the Vitality Stadium.

It is also claimed in the report that Spurs are set to test Bournemouth’s resolve with a £34 million bid for the 25-year-old, who will actually face off against Postecoglou’s side later today, so it will be interesting to see how he performs.

Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo vs Wolves in the FA Cup.

In the build up to this game, Semenyo has bagged nine goals and five assists across 30 appearances in all competitions, with his performances also attracting attention from Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle and Serie A title chasers Napoli.

It is added that Semenyo is keen on a big move elsewhere this summer, which could hand Spurs a boost. The former Bristol City star has also been praised for his top flight performances this season, especially by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp.

“He’s a lovely footballer to watch”, said Redknapp on Premier League productions earlier this term.

“The manager’s taken him to another level, he obviously has that capability because you saw it with Solanke. I’m just seeing him elevate his game right now, we’ll talk about why does that happen, a lot of it is purely on confidence.

“He looks like he’s enjoying his football, his shoulders are back, he’s relaxed, every time he gets it, he plays with a bit of a swagger. He’s actually a joy to watch right now.”
