Brydon Carse: Attritional Lord's win proves this England team can adapt

Fast bowler proud of collective efforts as teams reconvene at Old Trafford in wake of epic third Test

Brydon Carse says that England’s attritional approach to victory in last week’s pulsating Lord’s Test has shown how the team is willing to adapt its familiar free-flowing style in pursuit of glory against India and Australia this year.Carse contributed a vital half-century in England’s atypically slow-paced first innings of 387, which came at a run rate of 3.44 across 112.3 overs. He then claimed 3 for 118 across India’s two innings, including a pivotal two-wicket burst late on the fourth evening, when he utilised the Lord’s slope to perfection to trap Karun Nair and Shubman Gill lbw from the Pavilion End.”The atmosphere was incredible, the adrenaline was flowing,” Carse told ESPNcricinfo. “It was an incredibly crucial stage of the game that I was desperate to make an impact in, and I felt in good rhythm bowling that evening.Related

“To be able to pick up a couple of wickets in that spell and put the momentum back into our hands going into day five was incredibly satisfying. At times, over the course of the series so far, I feel like I’ve been bowling well and maybe haven’t had as much luck as I would have liked, but that was certainly satisfying for me.”It was not the typical style of cricket that we would like to play, and it took some adjustment, but it shows this side can move forward and adapt to certain situations.”We spoke a lot at the start of the series about how to get to that next level, about being a dominant Test team and the best Test team in the world. And as this game panned out, we showed that it’s not always going to be one-minded or a certain style of cricket. So, it was very satisfying as a group.”By the end of it all, however, Carse admitted his over-riding emotion was “relief”, when – with India just 22 runs adrift after an epic rearguard led by Ravindra Jadeja – Shoaib Bashir defied the pain of a broken finger to extract the final wicket of Mohammad Siraj.”You wanted to fall to your knees, almost,” Carse added, speaking in his new role as an ambassador for Step One underwear. “It was unbelievable, after all the hard work that the group put in over those five days. It was the best game that I’ve been involved in with England. And, from speaking to the guys who’ve played a lot of franchise cricket and Tests, like Harry Brook, who I get on really well with, he was saying that’s his best Test win. So to hear that among the group, and to share those thoughts after the game, was a special feeling.”Once we got off that field and walked through the Long Room, it was an incredible atmosphere … really loud. A couple of the guys who had played in the Ashes said that’s the loudest they’ve ever heard the Long Room. It was a pretty special week.”After a week’s break, England reconvene at Emirates Old Trafford this week with a 2-1 series lead, and two Tests left to play. The downtime, Carse admitted, had come at an opportune moment after the team had been forced to dig extraordinarily deep to close out a classic contest. The England players celebrate after Siraj’s dismissal•PA Images via Getty Images

“It was a complete collective effort from all the bowlers,” he said, with England pounding through nearly 200 overs on a slow Lord’s surface that offered little once the hardness of the new ball had worn off.”At times in that first innings, it was an incredibly long slog. But we kept coming and we kept on trying different plans. And, even in that second innings, all five bowlers contributed at certain times, so it felt really satisfying as a group of bowlers.”No one epitomised the hard graft better than England’s captain, Ben Stokes, who took it upon himself to deliver two gut-busting spells on the final day – one of 9.2 overs in the morning session, and another of ten in the afternoon, when the Dukes ball was at its softest and least responsive.”We had spoken about it as a group of seamers in that morning,” Carse said. “When we started that day, the ball was maybe 20 overs old and relatively hard, so we knew the first hour was going to be important again. But Lord’s was sold out and it was loud and tense at times, and the way Stokes captained the side, he doubled down on his method, and stuck to it right up until the end.”There was always that level of calmness that comes from him out there, and that feeds on to the players. But it probably went on a little bit longer than we would have liked. And that second session, looking back at it now, was probably one of the toughest sessions that I’ve had so far in my Test career.”Physically, however, Carse insists he’s still in a good place despite his exertions. Earlier this year, he was forced to miss the Champions Trophy after suffering an infection in the second toe of his left foot, and even joked that he’d considered amputation in a bid to get round a problem that had been caused by the heavy impact of his braced front leg in his delivery stride.”Yeah, I’m good,” he said. “Obviously, over the winter I was struggling, because I was playing with an open wound and eventually I just couldn’t sustain bowling on it.”But that problem is gone, it’s completely healed up. My feet are never going to be perfect, but at the moment, they’re in a good enough space that I’m happy with. I am going through bowling boots quite quickly – I had a couple of fresh pairs in the last game – and hopefully there will be a slightly better solution longer term.”Stokesy’s feet aren’t the greatest looking things, either, and he always jokes with me, it takes a couple of balls just to knock the top off, and then you’re into your work. But when you’ve got eight or nine times your body weight [being transferred through your bowling action], and with the amount of cricket that I’ve played so far this summer for England, I’m very comfortable and confident at where I’m at in regards with my body.”It was a tough contest mentally as well, as shown by various flashpoints between the teams across the five days – from Zak Crawley’s confrontation with Gill on the third evening, to Carse’s own altercation with Jadeja after an inadvertent collision while running between the wickets. The respect between the teams was in full evidence at the end, when England’s fielders came over to console Jadeja and Siraj after their heroics with the bat, but up until that point there was no quarter given.”We had a conversation on the evening of day three, when the Indian side was getting stuck into our two batters,” Carse said. “That shifted the mentality and the mood of our whole group, that we were going to be right up for this and get stuck in.”When you playing Test cricket, with the crowd and the pressure and the emotion, and how much everyone wanted to win that game, I think it’s great. There’s always obviously a line, and you don’t want to cross that line. But when you’re out on that field, and there’s 10 other blokes all fighting your corner, it’s pretty cool. And it’s what the game needed at that time.”Step One is a pioneering eco-friendly underwear brand known for its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and performance. "Baffling" – Ferguson cannot believe "strange" deal Thelwell pushed through at Rangers

Following a tough start to life under Russell Martin, former Rangers player Derek Ferguson has taken aim at one particular deal that Kevin Thelwell pushed through in the summer.

Update on Russell Martin's Rangers future

Reports last week suggested that the Hibernian game was a crucial point in the early stages of Martin’s tenure. Defeat would have likely ended the manager’s time at the club just months on from arriving. At long last, however, the Gers got back to winning ways and advanced in the Scottish League Cup to hand Martin a glimmer of hope.

The victory, which must only be a start, hands Rangers something to build on and may well be the beginning of the pressure being lifted on Martin. What is also key to note about that victory is the return of Nicolas Raskin. The midfielder has found himself dropped for reasons away from the pitch at times this season, but finally returned last time out to hand the Gers a decisive boost.

That win has not silenced all the noise, however, with Ferguson still taking aim at Thelwell and one decision that the sporting director reportedly pushed through during the summer transfer window.

Ferguson "baffled" by Chermiti deal

Speaking to Ibrox News, Ferguson revealed that he’s been “baffled” by Rangers’ decision to sign Chermiti in a deal worth as much as £10m at the end of the summer transfer window.

The former midfield player said: “I just can’t see anything to justify that fee. It’s baffling why they’ve paid so much. What it does is it brings pressure for the young lad from the off.

“With a price tag like that, you expect him to play every week and to bang in goals. If he doesn’t, then the pressure builds. It’s a strange one, and I, of course, wish him well, but I’m scratching my head over this one. I don’t know why this deal was done, to be honest with you.”

The former Everton forward is yet to prove his worth in a Rangers shirt. Although still early days, the 21-year-old has made just two appearances for the Scottish giants which is far from ideal for a player of his price.

At £10m, the Gers needed a player capable of hitting the ground running, especially in the middle of their current run. Alas, Chermiti hasn’t even broken into Martin’s Scottish Premiership squad at times this season.

Litton Das named Bangladesh T20I captain; Mahedi Hasan to be his deputy

Wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das has been formally announced as Bangladesh’s T20I captain, while offspinner Mahedi Hasan has been named his deputy for the seven away T20Is against UAE and Pakistan in May-June.Litton replaces Najmul Hossain Shanto in the role after the 26-year-old quit as Bangladesh’s T20I captain earlier this year. Litton had also led Bangladesh in a three-match T20I series in the West Indies last December, with Shanto unavailable due to a hamstring injury. Bangladesh had clean-swept the hosts 3-0.Litton has led Bangladesh in one Test, seven ODIs and four T20Is, but this is the first time that he has been named full-time captain in any format. The 30-year-old was recently ruled out of PSL 2025, where he was part of Karachi Kings, after he sustained a finger injury during training. He has since recovered.Related

Shanto, meanwhile, is one of five players who have returned to Bangladesh’s T20I squad. Apart from him, the national selectors have also included Towhid Hridoy, Tanvir Islam, Mustafizur Rahman and Shoriful Islam in the 16-member squad. Hridoy had also missed the West Indies series due to an injury, while Mustafizur was attending to a personal issue at the time. There was, however, no place for Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Ripon Mondol and Taskin Ahmed. Taskin is recovering from an ankle injury, while Mehidy’s exclusion is mildly surprising given he has been part of Bangladesh’s leadership group in recent months.Bangladesh will first play two T20Is against UAE in Sharjah on May 17 and 19. They will then leave for Pakistan to play a five-match T20I series, which begins on May 25. The series will conclude on June 3.

Lanning, Shafali, Jonassen lead DC to top of WPL table

After the spinners restricted MI to a below-par total, DC’s openers flew off the blocks to set up a comprehensive win

Hemant Brar28-Feb-2025Delhi Capitals 124 for 1 (Lanning 60*, Shafali 43, Amanjot 1-12) beat Mumbai Indians 123 for 9 (Harmanpreet 22, Matthews 22, Mani 3-17, Jonassen 3-25) by nine wicketsDelhi Capitals (DC) made it 12-1 for chasing teams in WPL 2025 as they beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by nine wickets in Bengaluru. The win, coming with 5.3 overs to spare, also helped DC replace MI at the top of the points table. They now have eight points from six games and MI six from five. After being sent in, MI looked positive at the start but once their openers fell, Jess Jonassen and Minnu Mani ran through the middle order, picking up three wickets each. Each of MI’s top five batters reached double digits but none of them crossed 22. Towards the end, Amanjot Kaur struck an unbeaten 17 off ten balls to push the side to 123 for 9.With DC chasing a well-below-par total, Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning added 85 for the first wicket in 9.5 overs. Shafali fell for 43 off 28 but Lanning carried on. She brought up her second half-century of the season, off 40 balls, and stayed unbeaten on 60 off 49 balls.Jess Jonassen’s three strikes included the key wicket of Harmanpreet Kaur•BCCIDC apply the brakes on MI’s brisk startMI were off to a quick start. Both Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews opened their accounts with first-ball fours off Marizanne Kapp. When Jonassen came to bowl the fourth over, Matthews greeted her with two fours off her first two balls. But DC applied the brakes on the scoring rate after that. In the sixth over, bowling around the wicket, Shikha Pandey had Bhatia caught behind for 11. Bhatia’s tally for WPL 2025 now stands at 38 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 84.44.Soon after, Matthews miscued Annabel Sutherland to Shafali Verma at mid-off. DC could have had Harmanpreet Kaur as well, for 1. In the eighth over, she edged Titas Sadhu but the ball flew between the wicketkeeper and slip. At the end of nine overs, MI were 49 for 2.Jonassen, Mani land decisive punchesIn DC’s previous game, Jonassen was named the Player of the Match for her batting. Tonight, she showed why bowling remains her stronger suit. Harmanpreet, having got her eye in, was looking to up the ante. In the tenth over, she muscled Sadhu over wide long-on for a 79m six. Three balls later, she showed her touch game. She moved towards the off side and tapped the length ball to the left of short fine leg for four. But Jonassen cut her innings short on 22, trapping her lbw with an arm ball. MI still had Nat Sciver-Brunt, the leading run-getter this season, in the middle. Before this match, she had three fifties in four innings. For her, Jonassen slowed down the pace and beat her in flight. Sciver-Brunt was early into the shot, ending up chipping it back to the bowler. With another flighted delivery, Jonassen bowled G Kamalini to finish with figures of 3 for 25.Shafali Verma scored 43 off just 28 balls•BCCIIn between, Mani dismissed S Sajana and Amelia Kerr in the space of three balls. Kerr’s wicket was as much Sutherland’s as it was Mani’s. Mani had got Kerr to top-edge a pull. Sutherland, who was at long-on, ran in diagonally to her right and dived full-length to complete the catch inches off the ground. Sanskriti Gupta also fell to Mani, her slog finding Jemimah Rodrigues at deep midwicket.Lanning, Shafali race awayMI knew they needed early wickets and, therefore, set attacking fields. Lanning, who has not been at her best this season, took advantage and picked up two fours off Shabnim Ismail in the first over of the chase.MI’s plan to bowl short to Shafali also backfired. Sciver-Brunt ended up conceding five wides, and when she got it right, Shafali dispatched her to the boundary. In the fourth over, she hit Sciver-Brunt for two fours and a six in four balls. At the other end, Lanning hit back-to-back fours off Ismail before meting out the same punishment to Matthews in the next over. By the end of the powerplay, DC had raced to 57 for no loss and had brought down the required rate to 4.78.Even after the field restrictions were relaxed, DC did not slow down. In the ninth over, Shafali hit Kerr down the ground for two sixes. Amanjot eventually broke the stand when she had Shafali caught at deep midwicket.By then, though, the contest was over. Lanning and Rodrigues took just 28 balls to knock off the remaining 39 runs.

Rangers and Martin move failed to sign England international on free transfer

Glasgow Rangers and Russell Martin made a move to sign an “immaculate” £2m player for nothing, as per Sky Sports.

Martin delighted with Rangers after 3-0 win vs Viktoria Plzen

The Gers took another step in the right direction towards Champions League qualification on Tuesday evening, beating Viktoria Plzen 3-0 at Ibrox in the first leg of their third qualifying round tie.

Martin, who was left fuming with his Rangers side after a 1-1 Scottish Premiership draw with Motherwell, rung the changes and left out captain James Tavernier and star midfielder Nicolas Raskin.

However, two goals from summer signing Djeidi Gassama and one from Cyriel Dessers puts the Gers in a strong position to progress to the next round. Talking after the Ibrox victory, Martin said via PA:

“I really enjoyed it. I’m proud of the guys. We had a really difficult evening on Saturday, just because there was not enough running in behind, aggression, intensity with the ball. We were not just ranting and raving, we showed a lot of clips and we tried to do a lot of learning in the meeting room and on the pitch in the last couple of days and they took it on brilliantly.

“The guys that came in the team were fantastic. We’re going to need everyone. You don’t get dropped from this team, people come in and out quite a lot because we need to be fresh.”

So far, 10 new additions have been made by Martin and the 49ers Enterprises, with more still potentially on the way before the September 1 deadline.

However, one player Rangers missed out on was Conor Coady, who swapped Leicester City for Wrexham in a £2m transfer.

Rangers moved to sign Coady for £0 – Sky Sports

As per Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett, Rangers tried to sign Coady on a free transfer from Leicester, with the defender believing that he would be able to walk away from the King Power for nothing.

Instead, Leicester managed to secure a fee for the “immaculate” England international, who signed a two-year deal in Wales.

Emmanuel Fernandez and Nasser Djiga have been the centre-back additions so far, rivalling John Souttar, Clinton Nsiala, Leon King and Ben Davies, but with the latter linked with Birmingham City, another defensive arrival shouldn’t be ruled out.

PIF agree deal to sign star compared to Raphinha, he only wanted Newcastle

The 2025 summer transfer window has been one that many Newcastle United fans would likely want to forget.

They’ve had numerous transfer targets join Premier League rivals, including Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko, who went to Liverpool and Manchester United, respectively. Furthermore, the club has spent the whole window with the shadow of Alexander Isak’s departure hanging over them.

However, they have also achieved some underrated wins with the likes of Anthony Elanga and Malick Thiaw. Eddie Howe’s side have also been closely linked to Brentford’s Yoane Wissa as a potential replacement for Isak.

Even with these signings, PIF are on the hunt for even more squad depth and are close to completing the signing of a talented Premier League player.

Newcastle agree £40m deal for Ramsey

Fabrizio Romano reported that Newcastle were closing in on a deal for Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey, who only wants a move to St James’ Park. The 24-year-old has been with Villa since 2007 and has risen through the academy to become a regular feature in the first team.

Mike McGrath has now added that Newcastle have agreed a £40m fee with Villa, so the Magpies now need to open talks over personal terms, and a medical will be arranged once an agreement has been reached.

Jacob Ramsey in Premier League action for Aston Villa.

However, this is a rapidly developing deal and there’s speculation that the personal terms could be agreed sooner rather than later and the deal concluded swiftly after.

West Ham were also reported to have approached Villa for Ramsey, as per Romano, but were dissuaded when the player made it clear that he “only wants Newcastle”.

Newcastle will be getting a versatile player who is seen as similar to Barcelona winger Raphinha, as per FBref due to his dynamic ability to play in attacking midfield or on the wing.

From a Villa perspective, they were one of the clubs most at risk of a PSR breach, so it’s likely the sale is more out of necessity than not wanting him. As Ramsey is an academy product, he will be listed purely as profit in Villa’s accounts, making him a more valuable player to sell PSR-wise than a player that they had signed.

Ramsey elevates those around him

Ramsey’s last season at Villa had been an upgrade on his quiet 2023/24 campaign, with most of his highlights coming in the Champions League and the FA Cup. With Newcastle back in the Champions League, they’ll be hoping that Ramsey can emulate this cup form in black and white.

While Ramsey’s goal involvements aren’t quite at the level of some of Newcastle’s current midfielders and wingers, he is often instrumental in build-up play, which can allow his teammates to score and assist more often.

The 24-year-old averages 13.5 progressive actions per 90 minutes in the league and features in the top 15% of players for pass accuracy, meaning he not only retains the ball but often does something positive with it.

Howe can forget Isak: PIF in talks to sign "prolific" £26m CF for Newcastle

With Alexander Isak adamant he’ll never player for Newcastle again, the Magpies are in talks to sign a “prolific” striker worth £26m from Ligue 1.

1 ByBen Gray Aug 13, 2025

Additionally, he featured in the top 5% of players for dribble success rate. If PIF can get Ramsey, he will be able to get the ball to the forward line on a regular basis, allowing them to score more goals. While no one player may be able to replace Isak’s numbers, signings like Ramsey will bring up the squad’s numbers as a whole, helping to ease the goal burden.

Finally replace Jobe: Sunderland make contact over "incredible" £26m star

Sunderland’s hectic transfer window started on a sombre note when Jobe Bellingham pushed through a move to leave the Black Cats behind for German behemoth Borussia Dortmund.

At that point in time, the Wearside masses must have been fearful regarding what the rest of the window was going to look like. However, they’ve never looked back, with the likes of Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki adding in plenty of fresh personnel to their options centrally.

Still, if there’s more chances to snap up exciting options in the midfield department before the Premier League season begins, Sunderland are unlikely to turn down such a tantalising opportunity.

Sunderland knock on door for £26m star

Indeed, it’s already been proven that Regis Le Bris and Co. are not done with revamping their midfield options, as Granit Xhaka is now set to undergo a medical at the Stadium of Light.

The Swiss international – who is set to join for £17m – will offer plenty of grit and fight having starred in the testing Premier League before for Arsenal, which will be needed if Sunderland are to immediately survive in such a stressful division.

He isn’t the only midfield addition that could soon catch the eye of the Stadium of Light fanbase, however, as a new development from Turkish outlet Saba Spor, via X, indicates that the Black Cats have made an approach to Galatasaray regarding ex-Norwich City ace Gabriel Sara.

Indeed, the report suggests that the newly-promoted side have ‘knocked on the door’ of the Super Lig side regarding a potential deal, with Sara currently valued at more than €30m (£26m).

Winning Sara’s services could see Sunderland pick up their next version of young Bellingham, with Xhaka far more attuned to the defensive side of his game.

Galatasaray'sGabrielSarashots at goal Andreas Hillergre

Whereas, the Brazilian is capable of being both an attacking force but also a combative and energetic option if needed, much like the brand-new Dortmund number 77.

Why Sara can be an "incredible" Bellingham replacement

Of course, there is also the aforementioned Diarra and Sadiki to chuck into the equation.

However, that duo will need time to get up to speed with their new environments, with Sara already well accustomed to the demands of the English game when starring week in week out for Norwich City in the Championship, before Turkey came calling.

In total, for the Canaries, Sara would pick up a sublime 21 goals and 17 assists from 96 appearances, which blows Bellingham’s own output for Sunderland out of the water, as he lags behind on 11 goals and four assists himself from six fewer clashes.

Yet, Sunderland only forked out £1.5m for the 19-year-old before he became an asset worthy of a hefty £27m, with Le Bris and Co. needing to splash out £26m on Sara, knowing he’s a worthy replacement for the now Bundesliga midfielder and not a project that will take time to come good.

Sara should also be comfortable with what is required of him in the Premier League, having now experienced the challenges of a tough, top division in Turkey by amassing a blistering two goals and ten assists from 45 outings, leading to Galatasaray’s head coach Okan Buruk praising the South American for adapting “very quickly.”

He is also adaptable when it comes to where he positions himself on the pitch, when glancing at the table above, with the 26-year-old content at being a number ten, a defensive anchor, or even a winger, much like Bellingham, who similarly rotated his duties under Le Bris’ methods.

Further noted as being “incredible” by U23 football scout Antonio Mango when challenging near the top of the Championship with Norwich, it could now finally be Sara’s time to shine in the Premier League, away from all those missed opportunities in Norfolk.

Sunderland definitely look well-stocked in the midfield department ahead of next season, with Sara adding yet more quality to the ever-growing camp if he joins shortly.

Transfers rumours continue to come thick and fast at Villa Park this summer, with ins and outs expected in the coming weeks leading up to the new Premier League season.

John McGinn has been a wonderful servant for Villa down the years, but the Scottish veteran has been linked with a move away from the club this summer. Everton are thought to be interested in snapping him up, with Unai Emery perhaps feeling that now is the right time to sell the midfielder, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2027.

In fact, Douglas Luiz has been backed to return to the Midlands for a second stint from Juventus, with the Brazilian potentially coming in as his former teammate’s replacement in the middle of the park, according to some reports. He was an influential figure first time around, and at 27, he still has a huge amount to offer in his career.

It remains to be seen what will happen regarding McGinn and Luiz this summer – some supporters may love the idea of them being back together at Villa Park next season – but away from their respective sagas, another player looks set to be heading to the club.

Aston Villa close to signing 34 y/o "good character"

According to a new update from The Athletic‘s Tanswell on X, Aston Villa have “finalised terms” to complete the signing of veteran Brest goalkeeper Marco Bizot, with NSWE and Monchi working their magic.

“AVFC have finalised terms to sign Marco Bizot from Brest. 34yo regarded a good character, with experience & low-cost fee other key factors. Will be GK No 2 – target position filled for Villa & remain in pursuit of defender & winger.”

The signing of Bizot may not feel like the most earth-shattering piece of business that Villa have ever done, given his age and the fact that he is likely coming in as a squad player, but it still feels like a sensible signing for them.

The Dutchman is a vastly experienced head, making over 300 appearances in Ligue 1 and the Eredivisie combined in his career – 139 in the former and 175 in the latter – as well as winning one cap for the Netherlands.

Tanswell’s description of Bizot as a “good character” certainly bodes well, in terms of him bringing a strong team ethic to the squad, and he can be an influential figure both on and off the pitch.

Aston Villa are set to target a new midfielder this summer

Villa will no doubt look to secure more expensive signings between now and the end of the summer transfer window, but Robin Olsen’s departure required a new backup goalkeeper and Bizot feels like a good choice to replace him.
