Gill's maiden ton gives India 2-1 lead

Scorecard
Shubman Gill anchored India’s chase with an unbeaten 138•PTI

Shubman Gill’s maiden hundred and an accurate bowling display from India Under-19’s bowlers, led by legspinner Rahul Chahar and left-arm spinner Anukul Roy, propped the hosts to a thumping seven-wicket win against England U-19s at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Chasing 215, India rode on 17-year-old Gill’s 157-ball 138, an innings that featured 17 fours and two sixes, to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.Gill began India’s chase in sprightly fashion, hitting three boundaries in the first over. England’s bowling attack missed the accuracy of Matthew Fisher, who sat out with a niggle, as the openers capitalised on plenty of run-scoring options off their wayward lines. Gill’s timing on a slow surface was impeccable. On a quick outfield, all he needed to do was find the gaps. He played the ball discernibly late, a marked improvement from the first two games, where he was dismissed as a result of hard hands through the line. He struck two sixes in his innings, a flat-batted slap over mid-off off a free hit and a pull over square leg.India raced past 50 in the seventh over, forcing Max Holden, the stand-in captain for Fisher, to turn to spin early. The move worked for England: Delray Rawlins had Himanshu Rana caught behind, edging a cut and Priyam Garg trapped in front off a non-turning delivery. Left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White, one of three inclusions for England, then had Salman Khan lbw, reducing India to 101 for 3.Thereafter, Harvik Desai and Gill combined to put on an unbeaten 115-run partnership to ease India home with 35 balls to spare. England’s bowling lacked penetration and depth, their lines were inconsistent, and the fielding was substandard. As the afternoon wore on, their frustration grew. Rawlins and Jack Blatherwick were involved in verbal squabbles with Gill, forcing the umpires to intervene.England’s day didn’t begin well either. After opting to bat, Holden continued his run of wretched scores on this tour. He was dismissed for eight in the fourth over off fast bowler Heramb Parab. After Henry Brook was caught for 12, George Bartlett and Rawlins, who was promoted to No. 4, were responsible for England’s rebuild. Both batsmen were fluent from the outset. Bartlett in particular, was strong off his wrists, finding the boundary – he hit six fours and a six – with ease on a sluggish pitch. However, as the spinners were introduced and the field spread, Bartlett found run-scoring increasingly tougher. Chahar troubled him by dragging his length back, extracting just enough turn. Bartlett survived a close lbw appeal off Chahar in the 22nd over, and was stumped in the next, attempting to heave a ball he wasn’t close to.Like the rest of the series, Rawlins had no such trouble against the spinners, continually using his feet and cross-batted strokes to push the score along. He hit 11 fours and two sixes – some were bludgeoned, some a result of deft touch. He hit two boundaries in the 43rd over, a six over long-off and a four over midwicket, to move to 96. The next ball, however, he reverse-swept Roy to short third man, missing his second century in three games by a few feet.Wicketkeeper Ollie Pope missed a cut off a slider and Will Jacks was acrobatically taken by Chahar at midwicket. A score of 171 for 3 quickly turned to 200 for 7 as England’s lower order struggled to find fluency against India’s spinners. Chahar returned towards the end to pick up three wickets, two of which were stumpings off wild slogs, capping a fine effort in the field.

Yorkshire gamble on Ballance captaincy

Yorkshire have gambled on the anticipated dwindling of Gary Ballance’s Test career, at least in the short term, by appointing him captain in all three formats.Ballance’s appointment represents the first major decision by Yorkshire’s new head coach, Andrew Gale, and ends weeks of conjecture about whether Ballance’s leadership role can remain undisrupted by further England calls.Alex Lees, who was hailed as Yorkshire’s youngest official captain since Lord Hawke, one of the county’s most iconic figures, when he took charge of the limited-overs formats in 2016, has relinquished the role after only one season.Ballance, at 27, still retains the drive to add to his 21 Tests, but he has been omitted from England’s line-up throughout the India series, so much out of contention that it is questionable whether there has been any purpose in him remaining on tour.”When Andrew Gale called me, it was impossible to turn down. Being captain is something that I enjoy doing and hopefully I will do a good job for Yorkshire and follow on from the good work that Galey has done over the years.”I’m experienced now, I have played a bit of cricket over the years, so I have seen how different captains work. I think that I am a calm person and like to think that I have a decent cricket brain. I’m not a massive speaker, but I will be looking to lead by example on the field and get the lads to follow me.”It must be challenging nevertheless to accept a job with total conviction when deep down you are hoping that you might bat so well you will make yourself redundant again in no time.Gale is not blind to the risks but he made no secret of his preference for a captain to cover all formats when he was unveiled as 1st XI coach – indeed, he was not best pleased when his own captaincy career finished in the Championship only – and Ballance was his preferred option from the outset if it was felt that England calls would be limited.Although England’s middle-order remains far from settled, the emergence of Haseeb Hameed and Keaton Jennings does give England more options at the top of the order, with the possibility that Jennings might fill a role at No. 3, and with the Champions Trophy looming in June there is no Test cricket in the first half of the 2017 summer.Although, to the outsider, he might not immediately give off the presence of a leader, Ballance commands great respect in the dressing room with younger players naturally gravitating to him for advice.Gale said: “I wanted to take my time when deciding who to appoint as new Club Captain and Gary is the right man to take the team forward. I am a firm believer in continuity and I am pleased that Gary will captain Yorkshire across all three formats.”Gary is respected on and off the field, has a good cricket brain and knows the direction that we would like to take the team in. He has led from the front for many years with the bat and his experience speaks for itself.”Last season, I missed a game against Nottinghamshire at Scarborough with a back injury and Gary stepped in as captain. He showed great qualities as a leader and I am excited about how he will lead the side in the future.”Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s director cricket, has contented himself with an advisory role as Gale, retired for all of a month, made the captaincy call, but Moxon was quick to praise the attributes of Yorkshire’s new leader.”Gary has captained a little bit in the past and has done a really good job,” Moxon said. “He has got the respect of the players and is a very popular member of the dressing room. He is a hugely experienced cricketer now having played international cricket. Tactically he is astute, so he will be very good at that side as well as managing the lads.”For Lees, the emphasis changes to making top-order runs and reviving his reputation as one of the most promising top-order batsmen in the country. Captaincy seemed to have come too early for him, although he did rally Yorkshire in mid-season in the NatWest Blast to the extent that, against expectations, they reached Finals Day.”Galey feels, and I agree, that one captain is the way to go,” Moxon said. “It is an opportunity for Alex to concentrate on his batting and make sure that he is the best batsman that he can be. That is important for his development and for the team if he is stacking the runs up.”We felt that it was only right that he didn’t have any distractions with that in mind and he is very comfortable with that.”

Toumazi to stand down as Sussex chief executive

Zac Toumazi, Sussex’s chief executive, will step down from his role at the end of 2016, after four years in the position.Toumazi, who joined Sussex at the start of 2013, oversaw the integration of Sussex’s professional, recreational and community cricket into one organisation, Sussex Cricket Limited, as well as a major overhaul of the ground infrastructure at Hove, including the development of a new media centre. He arrived at Sussex following a career in investment banking, as well as commercial roles at both Hampshire and Surrey and used that experience to help the club to punch above its weight, not least in securing a notable naming-rights deal for what became known as the BrightonandHoveJobs.com (latterly 1st Central) County Ground. However, Sussex’s relegation in 2015 hit the club hard, with the departure of their long-standing coach, Mark Robinson, effectively bringing to an end an era in which they won three County Championship titles in five seasons, including their maiden success in 2003.”It has been a difficult decision to make but I do believe that it is right for me to move on and hand over the reins to a successor,” said Toumazi. “The role of CEO of such a great club has been a privilege and an honour. I have enjoyed my time at Sussex and leave behind an excellent team that is set for the future. Our professional cricket is poised for exciting times ahead under the new management team, our Academy is bearing fruit with the young players coming through the programme, and I am sure that trophies are not too far away.”I take away many fond memories and lasting friendships. A special thank you to our members and partners who have been an absolute delight to interact with and who are always ready to support. I have no doubt that the future is bright for Good Old Sussex by The Sea.”Sussex’s chairman, Jim May, added: “Zac Toumazi has been a very professional and well respected chief executive who has brought great energy to the role and has been a great ambassador for Sussex. Aside from overseeing the ground-breaking formation of Sussex Cricket, Zac has accomplished much including the restructure of our pro-cricket department and has helped drive our commercial business.”He will be rightly remembered as a man with strong values whose interpersonal skills have helped strengthen our relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. Zac has been an excellent chief executive who leaves Sussex with our very best wishes, and, in very good shape for his successor.”

'We've adapted well on some of the toughest pitches' – Wade

Australia wicketkeeper Matthew Wade has said that the one-day specialists and seamers in the side countered Sri Lanka’s spinners by ‘adapting really well on some of the toughest ODI pitches’

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Sep-2016Australia wicketkeeper Matthew Wade has said that the one-day specialists and seamers in the side countered Sri Lanka’s spinners by ‘adapting really well on some of the toughest ODI pitches’, helping the visitors seal the ODI series after a 3-0 whitewash in the Tests.”We have had the advantage, the one-day players getting the advantage to see what the Test pitches have played like and coming here with a clear gameplan,” Wade said. “Myself and George Bailey and a few others have just come over for the one-dayers, we have had a clear plan and it has worked so far.”The wickets have been some of the toughest you’ll get in one-day international cricket, we’ve come from the West Indies, which took spin. You don’t usually play on used wickets back to back in one-day internationals. It hasn’t been suited to the way we play but we’ve adapted really well. We are playing a few more quicks than what they (Sri Lanka) are, but with variable bounce and reverse swing, we’ve countered their spinners.”Despite not being picked as Australia’s designated wicketkeeper for the following T20 series against Sri Lanka, Wade acknowledged he is contributing more to Australia now compared to a few years ago.”Every time you don’t get picked for Australia is disappointing, but that’s the way it goes,” he said. “I’m not a 100 % sure of the reason. (Peter) Nevill played the T20 World Cup and I was told he was going to bat lower, so they wanted to go with his keeping. I’ll just keep playing the way I play in ODIs.”I feel my game is at a level now where I can contribute in ODIs. There was a period of time where my game wasn’t in order three or four years ago, where I felt I wasn’t contributing enough. At the moment, I feel my game is in good order. I want to get picked for every tour, every match because I feel I can do the job.”After Australia’s tri-series win in the Caribbean, stand-in coach Justin Langer challenged Wade to become the best wicketkeeper in the country by following a diligent work ethic. More than two months later, Wade said his keeping is as good as it has ever been.”It came as a bit of shock to me that it came out in the press like that. I spoke to JL (Langer) after and understood what he was trying to say,” Wade said. “I’m under no illusions that I need to work harder and get better at my game. If I want to play Test cricket again, I have to work harder.”I’ve improved with my glovework over the past 3-4 weeks in the subcontinent. I went to England and kept playing, that makes a huge difference in the off-season: going home or just training indoors or going to Brisbane to get work done. This time I went to England. I feel like I’m keeping as well as I’ve done for a very long time.”

Newcastle Interested In £78m-Rated Summer Deal

Newcastle United are showing an interest potentially making a move for the Barcelona winger Raphinha this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Could Newcastle sign Raphinha?

The Tyneside club have enjoyed a real breakthrough season which currently has them sitting pretty up in third spot of the Premier League table.

Champions League is in touching distance with just four games remaining for Eddie Howe's side, but they will be looking to avoid any slip-ups with the likes of Liverpool breathing down their necks in fifth.

The prospect of playing on the elite European stage would not only see some of the biggest clubs in the world visit St James' Park, it would also free up more money for Newcastle to spend.

Indeed, as per the Financial Fair Play regulations, having a bigger revenue stream allows clubs to spend more and, therefore, this could boost their ability in the transfer market.

And they may need more room to spend if they are to pursue a player like Raphinha over the coming months given it was only last summer when he made that huge move to the Nou Camp.

Leeds United were able to rake in around £55m last year which has the potential to rise through add-ons.

But his time in Spain could be coming to an end, speaking on his Here We Go podcast, Romano has claimed the Toon are one of the sides who are interested in the Brazilian:

(32:00) "With Raphinha, it's not easy for Barcelona, because Raphinha is doing well. I think this was a positive season for Raphinha. Maybe not a fantastic season. But the positive season.

"From what I know, Xavi's very happy with him. So it's not easy for Barca to say: 'Okay, let's put Raphinha on the market'.

"But they could be open to letting him go in case they can bring [Lionel] Messi back because, with Raphinha, you can maybe make €80m/€85m/€90m (£69m-£78m) – Chelsea interest, Newcastle interest."

Do Newcastle need Raphinha?

The £208k-per-week star typically plays off the right wing as he cuts inside on his wicked left foot and this is a position which could possibly be up for grabs over the summer.

Indeed, casting your mind back just a few months ago, the spot on the right was all but tied up by Miguel Almiron.

The Paraguayan enjoyed a stunning start to the 2022/23 campaign which saw him find the back of the net nine times in the league alone as of Boxing Day (via Transfermarkt).

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe withMiguelAlmiron

However, his form has fallen off a cliff since then – granted he has struggled with injuries – having scored just twice in the league since the turn of the year.

Jacob Murphy has filled in for the 29-year-old and has done a solid job with three goals in his last four outings in the Premier League (via Transfermarkt).

These are both players without experience in the Champions League and whether they are good enough to play at that level will remain in doubt.

However, Raphinha has gained European experience with Barca and has been able to offer four goal contributions across the Champions League and Europa League this season (via Transfermarkt).

Seb Stafford-Bloor has hailed the Brazilian as "magic" and perhaps this is the standard of player Newcastle should be looking at to bolster their side ahead of what will surely be a huge 2023/24 campaign.

Richard Keys Left Furious Over What He Saw In Liverpool Win

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been slammed for his celebrations following Diogo Jota’s late winner on the weekend against Tottenham Hotspur.

What did Jurgen Klopp do?

Sunday’s game at Anfield offered the fans 90 minutes they will never forget after a stunning start saw them take a 3-0 lead against the north London side.

However, the Lilywhites slowly worked their way back into the game and in dramatic fashion, former Everton player, Richarlison came off the bench to score an injury-time equaliser.

The Brazilian had just about put his shirt back on as Liverpool broke from the resulting kick-off to which Jota slammed the ball beyond Fraser Forster to seal the points.

Late euphoria clearly got the better of Klopp who immediately ran towards the fourth official to celebrate in his face as the Reds rose into fifth place of the table.

The German boss was shown a yellow card by Paul Tierney following the incident and seemingly injured his hamstring in the dramatic celebrations.

However, the incident did not go down well with beIN Sports presenter Richard Keys who was left furious with the actions of the Liverpool boss:

“He is box office, but there are occasions he strays beyond what’s acceptable, and today he’s done that.”

“If he’s more responsible than he was this afternoon, he will – as he has done – accept once again, he’s lost control. And that is a flaw in his character. And he cannot continue to do that.”

“But I would say that someone needs to have a word and say: ‘Look, come on. You can’t do that.'”

Did Klopp cross the line?

There is no denying the final minutes of the game on Sunday will have stirred the emotions for all involved at Liverpool and none more so than Klopp.

However, his actions did cross the line following the goal in the dying moments of the game and he could have certainly gone about it differently.

The German could have celebrated with his players and coaching staff, but he has gone out of his way to make a point towards the officials.

Following the game, the 55-year-old was quick to bring up the moment he was shown a yellow card by Paul Tierney when speaking to Sky Sports:

“My celebration towards the fourth official, I didn’t say any bad words or nothing unnecessary, which is fair. I got my punishment by pulling my hamstring. But what he said to me when he gave me the yellow card is not okay.”

If the PGMOL do decide to take further action against Klopp, the German will likely find it incredibly difficult to defend his celebration given the manner of which he approached the fourth official.

However, it will be interesting to see whether anything comes of his comments about what Tierney allegedly said to him when handing him the yellow card.

Both team arguably got away with red card offences during the game, so perhaps Klopp should have recognised Tierney’s questionable officiating and brought it up with him after the game when he would’ve had the chance behind the scenes.

Aston Villa Leading Transfer Chase For "Excellent" Teenager

Aston Villa are thought to be leading the transfer chase for Charlton Athletic forward Miles Leaburn, according to The Sun.

What’s the latest Aston Villa transfer news involving Leaburn?

Villa have one of the form strikers in the country in Ollie Watkins, with the 27-year-old netting twice in a 3-0 Premier League win over Newcastle on Saturday to make it 11 goals in his last 12 games.

His form has resulted in Unai Emery calling off the search for a new first-choice striker signing this summer, however, it looks as if sporting director Johan Lange and owners NSWE are on the hunt to sign teenager Leaburn.

The Sun shared a story in the last 48 hours, claiming that Villa are leading the transfer chase for Leaburn. The Charlton gem, who stands at 6 foot 5, has caught the eye of a number of Premier League sides, with the Addicks expecting to receive offers over the coming months.

Could Leaburn be one for the future?

Leaburn is just 19 years of age and is under contract with his current employers until 2025. Valued at €350,000 by Transfermarkt, the youngster has enjoyed a fine breakthrough campaign, scoring 12 times in 36 appearances, with manager Dean Holden describing his goal involvement record as “excellent”.

An out-and-out centre-forward, Leaburn could be viewed by those in the Midlands as a star in the making, so securing his services this summer may prove to be a smart piece of business further down the line.

In the short term, Villa will have a decision to make on Cameron Archer. The 21-year-old has contributed to 14 Championship goals in 16 appearances on loan at Middlesbrough, so Emery may well decide to look to use Archer in his first full season alongside Watkins and Jhon Duran.

Leaburn could also possibly become a Villa player this summer, and it could be wise to loan him back out for the 2023/24 campaign in what would be just his second season of senior football.
