'Mission accomplished' – Ottis Gibson on South Africa's 3-0 sweep of Pakistan

While South Africa’s quicks stood out, the coach and stand-in captain Dean Elgar also credited the batsmen for their grind on tough pitches

Liam Brickhill in Johannesburg14-Jan-2019″Mission accomplished”. That was coach Ottis Gibson’s assessment of South Africa’s clean sweep of Pakistan across three absorbing Test matches. And while South Africa’s bowlers have stood out in this series – with Gibson suggesting that Duanne Olivier’s 24 wickets were the difference between the two sides – the home batsmen have been the unsung heroes.”We did exactly what we set out to do,” Gibson said. “We wanted to play four fast bowlers, and the way we played, the pitches suited four fast bowlers. The four fast bowlers did a fantastic job. Batsmen struggled for runs, but they still scored: we got two hundreds in the series, and all in all, mission accomplished.”Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis’ hundreds are at the top of the pile, but several members of South Africa’s top order adapted superbly to conditions unsuited to free-flowing scoring. Tough pitches have required an extra ounce of grit in their efforts, and the likes of Temba Bavuma and Hashim Amla have risen to the occasion more than once.”You’ve got to analyse the conditions we play in,” Dean Elgar, South Africa’s stand-in captain for the third Test, suggested. “Our Test wickets are very tough. I’d like to think that you can still score big runs in South Africa, and you can if you really apply yourself and you’re in a good mental space. But the wickets we play on are very tough on the batters.””As bad as people have said the wickets have been, we got two quality hundreds and quite a few fifties,” Gibson said. “Temba Bavuma was outstanding in this series. He never got a hundred, but the job that he did. Hashim in both innings in this match, and especially on the third day, we could easily have been bowled out but for the way Hashim played. And then Quinny scored a brilliant hundred as well.”I keep saying to the batters ‘when the wickets are like this, you don’t need to score 500′. If we get 262 in the first innings, with our four fast bowlers on a fast bouncy track that’s a great score, because we know that we can knock a team over for under that, which we did. It’s been tough for the batters. They might complain outside the dressing room, but inside the dressing room none of the batters are complaining about the pitches. We’re just getting stuck in and trying to get as many runs as we can get to give our bowlers the chance to operate.”Conditions have, inevitably, meant that not all of South Africa’s batsmen have been able to cash in. Elgar made just the one fifty, while Theunis de Bruyn’s top score fell one short of a half-century and Zubayr Hamza managed 41 on debut in the first innings but registered a duck in the second.”The guys are quite new,” Elgar said. “Theunis is inexperienced at this level, and Hamza came in on his Test debut, and that’s always going to be tough. The pressure and intensity that you face at Test level is going to be higher than what you’re used to at domestic level.”You’ve got to have a few inexperienced guys around because they’ve got to take the game forward in a few years’ time. So, it’s important that we carry those guys around. They need to play, that’s the only way you get experience. Unfortunately, you do have to go through a few failures in your career, but it’s about how you bounce back from those failures going forward.”Dean Elgar pulls during his 24 not out•Associated PressFor de Bruyn, Hamza and even Elgar himself, there is a certain amount of leeway in the results they achieve, given that South Africa’s focus is on their quicks, and on preparing home pitches that suit their strengths. Batting failures are almost inevitable, and that requires good communication, and added mental fortitude among South Africa’s batsmen.”There’s definitely going to be a sensitivity around that,” Elgar said. “I wouldn’t say the days of averaging 45 plus are gone. There’s still room for that and your best batters will reach those goals. But it’s always going to be a challenge, and you won’t be as free flowing on the wickets we’re playing on. A bit more hard kind of cricket. Gritting it out. Free scoring, you’ve got put that aside until you get in. It’s going to be hard work for the batters. We’re going to have hard times obviously, but you’ve got to adapt.”We’ve got no choice. Our strength is our bowlers, and we’ve got to use what we have. That’s our arsenal. I sit here as a batter, and I’ve also got to fight through that. You’re going to get a good ball with your name on it when you’re playing on wickets like this, which is tough. A lot of guys might get down on that, because you want to do well. That’s why we play this game. But failure is always going to happen in this game, and with the wickets we’re playing on, it’s always going to be tough for us.”As seam-friendly as conditions have been during this series, the performances of du Plessis, Amla, Bavuma and de Kock have also shown that run-scoring, while often difficult, is by no means impossible. De Kock’s second innings century at the Wanderers took him to the top of the runs tally for the series which is a remarkable turnaround considering his troubles with the bat in the longest format in 2018. For Elgar, de Kock’s new-found confidence – won from his exhilarating performances in the Mzansi Super League where he was Cape Town Blitz’s leading run-getter with 412 runs at 58.85 – has helped to spark his change in fortunes. The hard work he has put in behind the scenes hasn’t hurt either.”Quinny has been in awesome form this summer,” Elgar said. “He played a seriously good MSL T20 league. I know it’s a different format, but he’s a confidence player and that tournament gave him a lot of confidence coming into this series. It’s awesome to see the way he’s batting now. He was working on a few technical things, and it’s good to see that the hard work has paid off for him. He’s trained extremely hard physically, not only on his cricket but also off the field, and it’s paid off for him.”Elgar highlighted South Africa’s adaptability to conditions as a major positive for the side, but suggested that “scoring more hundreds”, regardless of conditions, was a goal moving forward. While he was rightfully proud of the team’s performance under his leadership, he also said that South Africa could be even better when firing on all cylinders.”I don’t think we played at 100 percent throughout the series,” Elgar said. “I always thought we were maybe at 70, 75 percent throughout the series, so for us to get close to 100 percent is another goal for us. I’m sure a lot of guys would agree with what I’m saying that we haven’t played our best cricket. But we’re still winning, so I can’t wait for when we’re actually in that 90 to 100 percent bracket. I can’t wait to see what we can achieve.””We will certainly continue to play this brand of cricket, because it is successful, and ultimately that’s what we want to be,” Gibson said. “We want to be successful, and if it’s working for us then we’ll continue this trend.”

Approach made: Celtic submit enquiry for “flamboyant” left-footed winger

Celtic have made contact and several enquiries to discuss a deal to sign an overseas forward in January, according to a fresh report this week.

Celtic transfer targets

According to Football Insider, Brendan Rodgers is looking to secure three new signings during the upcoming window, and whilst he’s keen to strengthen his outfield ranks, the priority position is to recruit a goalkeeper between the sticks who could go on to become a long-term number one.

The Daily Record have reported that Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin is one of the options under serious consideration, but with regards to roles higher up the pitch, the name of a potential attacking candidate has emerged in the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic considering move to bring 6 ft 3 penalty saving expert to Parkhead

The Hoops are looking to bolster their options between the sticks during the upcoming transfer window.

ByChloe Chadwick Nov 28, 2023

Estoril’s left-winger Tiago Araujo only put pen to paper at his club last summer from Benfica, where he’s made a total of 46 appearances to date (Transfermarkt – Araujo statistics), and his impressive form has caught the eye at Parkhead.

Portugal’s former youth international still has two years remaining on his deal (Estoril contracts), but that hasn’t stopped the hierarchy from taking a bite at the cherry to see if they can reach an agreement for the services of the 22-year-old ahead of January.

Celtic keen on deal for Tiago Araujo

According to The Telegraph, Celtic are exploring a deal for Araujo, and with the opportunity to sign him for a bargain price up for grabs, this is a deal that they want to get over the line in the new year.

"Celtic are trying to seal a deal for Portuguese winger Tiago Araujo for the start of the January transfer window. Araujo, 22, has been playing for Estoril in the Primeira Liga this season as a left-back and left-sided midfielder, alerting the Scottish champions with his performances after moving from Benfica 18 months ago.

"He has been the subject of enquiries from Celtic, who are looking at a deal worth around £4million to land the former Portugal Under-21 international."

Araujo's "flamboyant" style would delight Parkhead

Despite operating as a left-back more times than any other position since the start of his career, Araujo is also capable of playing in the midfield and higher up on the left and right flanks as a winger, so his versatility would make him a great option to have at Celtic.

Sponsored by Adidas, the left-footed ace has posted 23 contributions (12 assists and 11 goals) in 122 appearances following his arrival on the professional scene, and he possesses a constant desire to create as many chances as possible in the final third.

Rodgers’ target has recorded 46 crosses over the course of the current campaign which is more than any of his fellow teammates (FBRef – Estoril statistics), highlighting what a standout performer he is when it comes to whipping balls into the opposition’s area.

As described by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Araujo is a “flamboyant” player for his varied skillset up and down the left side of the pitch, so there’s no doubt that he could be an exciting signing for the manager should he put pen to paper in January.

Former South Africa batsman Gulam Bodi pleads guilty to corruption

Former South Africa and Lions batsman Gulam Bodi has pleaded guilty to eight charges of corruption and begged for clemency in the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court. On Friday, Bodi became the first South African sportsperson to be criminally convicted for match-fixing and is facing a potential 15-year sentence.Bodi is being charged under the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act of 2004, which makes match-fixing and spot-fixing in sport a crime in South Africa. The act was introduced after the Hansie Cronje match-fixing saga in 2000, and this is the first time it is being exercised. In 2016, Bodi was banned from taking part in any activities relating to cricket for 20 years by Cricket South Africa for his part in contriving to fix, or otherwise improperly influence aspects of the 2015 Ram Slam T20 tournament. Six other players – Alviro Petersen, Thami Tsolekile, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Jean Symes, Pumi Matshikwe and Ethy Mbhalati – were also implicated.CSA handed their evidence over to the South African police services, who launched their own investigation culminating in this case.”It has been a very tough few years,” Bodi told reporters outside the courtroom. “I’ve been banned for 20 years. That’s already a long sentence. So for me not to be able to do something I loved my entire life has been terribly hard. I haven’t really settled in the last three years. It’s been a constant battle.”Just recently I managed to get a job, and after three years of running around and struggling, things started slowly looking a bit better, and now this comes up. It’s completely shattered me.”They pulled me out of school when I was just 16 and put me in a cricket academy. I don’t even have an education background to fall back on, so it’s been a real battle. This is going to greatly affect my job and my family, because nobody wants to be associated with a criminal.”Sinenhlanhla Mnguni, Bodi’s legal representative, said his client acknowledged his wrongdoing and pleaded for the court’s mercy. The state and defence legal teams both asked for more time in order to prepare for a sentencing, and Magistrate Nicola Setshogoe agreed to a postponement, acknowledging that as a first-time offender Bodi had handed himself in and co-operated fully with authorities since being arrested in July.”Before this whole thing transpired, my client was offered a job at a cricket academy and had also been commenting with SuperSport,” Mnguni told . “The fact that the ban he received meant he couldn’t be involved with cricket took away any form of income he would be able to earn because in essence this man only knows cricket. He doesn’t have an academic background.”I’m hoping that when we bring forward all these issues to the court, in addition to the fact that he’s got three very young children and he’s got an elderly unemployed mother, whom he financially supports.”I feel for my client because I know he’s been through a lot. He’s made a mistake and I won’t say he’s been punished enough, but he has been punished and he suffered a lot going through this process, and he obviously feels very sorry for what he’s done and the harm he has caused to CSA and the damage that they suffered in the public for what he’s done.”Bodi will return to court on 28 January next year for sentencing.

Former India batsman Badrinath retires from all formats

The Tamil Nadu stalwart who made over 10,000 first-class runs has called time on a professional career that spanned 18 years

A day after his 38th birthday, former India batsman and former Tamil Nadu captain, S Badrinath announced his retirement from all forms of cricket with immediate effect, ending a domestic career that started in 2000.After becoming the 47th Indian to 10,000 first-class runs in November 2016 – while captaining Hyderabad as a professional – he opted out of the entire 2017-18 first-class season in order to spend time with his family.Badrinath had been contemplating retirement since then, more so after taking up a coaching role with Karaikudi Kaalai in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) this year. Two weeks after the end of the TNPL, Badrinath confirmed he was hanging his boots at a press conference in Chennai.”Thirty out of 38 years of my life were in cricket and it has gone ever so fast, and now I’m retiring from playing cricket in any form,” he said. “This certainly hasn’t been an easy decision to be honest and I’ve been pondering over it [for a while]…Somehow my hand didn’t go into penning the [retirement] letter over the last year. It was very difficult for me, but having turned 38 yesterday, I’ve decided that it’s the right time to make the call. I’ve played 17 years as a professional and god has been very, very kind.”Badrinath finished as the sixth-highest scorer in the Ranji Trophy, with 7850 runs, a big chunk of which came in a 14-season association with Tamil Nadu that began in 2000-01. He was the mainstay of the Tamil Nadu sides that reached the Ranji Trophy finals in 2002-03, 2003-04 and 2011-12. His career-best 250 against Mumbai at Bandra Kulra Complex led a stellar turnaround for Tamil Nadu in 2009. After TN had been reduced to 50 for 5 before lunch on day one, Badrinath took them to 501 and they subsequently took the first-innings lead.An elbow injury to Sachin Tendulkar had opened up a spot for an ODI debut for Badrinath against Sri Lanka in 2008 in Dambulla, where he impressed immediately, guiding India home with an unbeaten 27 in a low-scoring match. However, he made only nine international appearances across formats after that, the last being an ODI against West Indies in North Sound in 2011.When asked if he would have got a longer run with the national team in an era that didn’t have Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman in the middle order, Badrinath said: “I have no regrets and I couldn’t have done anything differently. You can only play Test cricket and become a better batsman. You can never face that kind of a quality attack in India – Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel or James Anderson. Only when you get a decent run in Test cricket, you know what you can work on. But, no regrets at all.”Badrinath found success with Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2011, making 396 runs in 13 innings as a floater, including five fifties and six not-outs, at an average of 56.57 and strike-rate of 127. All in all, he played 114 games for CSK between 2008 and 2013, scoring 1667 runs and winning back-to-back IPL titles with them in 2010 and 2011.”People never even thought I could play T20 cricket,” he said. “To play the amount of games I played for CSK was phenomenal and I went on to play T20 cricket for India as well. If you had asked me if I would have played T20Is for India in 2004-05, I would not have dreamt of it at all.”After moving out of Tamil Nadu in 2014, he mentored youngsters at Vidarbha and Hyderabad, and led both teams to the Ranji knockouts.

Everton battling to sign "quick" 18-goal star who starred v Bayern Munich

Joining the race to welcome a new target, Everton are now reportedly battling to sign an attacking star who recently stole the show against European giants Bayern Munich.

Everton transfer news

The Friedkin era is well and truly underway. David Moyes is back and setting his focus on moving Everton beyond battles to survive and back towards the Premier League’s top half, whilst their new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium is on the horizon and has already hosted a test match against Wigan Athletic’s academy side.

Now, when the summer arrives, it’s up to the new owners to match the ambition of a new stadium and that of Moyes by welcoming some key reinforcements at the beginning of a new era.

Of course, the Toffees have already welcomed one reinforcement under Friedkin on that front in the form of Carlos Alcaraz, who has got off to the perfect start in an Everton shirt. Opening his account with the winning goal against Crystal Palace last time out, the Flamengo loanee is doing everything right to turn his move permanent.

He’s not the only talented attacker who could feature in Moyes’ frontline next season, however. According to The Boot Room, Everton are now battling to sign Nicolas Kuhn from Celtic alongside Leeds United and Crystal Palace this summer.

The Celtic star has enjoyed an excellent season and stole the show against Bayern Munich, scoring to put his side back on level terms on aggregate only for Alphonso Davies to break their hearts in the dying embers and seal victory for the German giants.

2400% price rise: Everton must regret selling flop who’s "one of the best"

Alas, the result shouldn’t take away from the winger’s impressive performance, which should have only increased the interest of Premier League clubs such as Everton ahead of the summer transfer window.

"Quick" Kuhn would be an instant upgrade

Whilst there’s no doubt that Moyes has got Everton finally firing on all cylinders going forward following a fairly blunt spell under Sean Dyche, he could still do with the star power that Kuhn would provide. On the biggest stage, the winger silenced Bayern Munich with Celtic’s equaliser in midweek in a moment that he could replicate in Merseyside next season.

Earning the praise of Brendan Rodgers in what has been a superb season, the Celtic boss told reporters when asked about his 18-goal winger earlier in the campaign: “I just think it’s time, isn’t it? I think we all expect people to adapt straight away, you’d love them to, whether they’re managers, coaches, or supporters.

“You want them to be ready immediately, but he came into the club during a challenging period in January. He had issues around his fitness and health, and everything else.

“He just landed in the middle of that difficult time, and it took him a little while. But he’s had a really good pre-season. He’s always been quick, one of the quickest players you’ll see, but I think now there’s more variety in his game, coming inside and out.”

West Ham: Door "opening" for star to leave after update

West Ham's door is opening for one player to leave with negotiations over staying now on the brink of collapse, according to reports.

New contracts at West Ham

The east Londoners have been moving to tie down both key players and exciting talents for the future. Indeed, most recently, star winger Jarrod Bowen committed his future to West Ham by signing a seven-year contract, which will take the player well into his 30s. This is despite Liverpool transfer rumours suggesting an interest in Bowen from Jurgen Klopp, which will come as a big boost for manager David Moyes.

Speaking after West Ham confirmed the England international's new deal, Moyes was left delighted.

West Ham United managerDavidMoyesbefore the match

“We’re delighted Jarrod has agreed a new deal," said the Scotsman to West Ham's official website.

It’s a brilliant piece of business from the club to tie him down to a new long-term contract. His goal in Prague will live long in the memory for everyone connected to West Ham – it’s given him a platform to go from strength to strength and we’re really reaping the benefits, he’s getting better and better. He’s a fantastic boy and an outstanding professional – I’m sure his positive progress will continue over the course of his new contract.”

Alongside Bowen, West Ham have also tied down exciting teenage midfielder Dan Rigge, who was reported to be attracting interest from major clubs.

“I am very proud,” said Rigge after the West Ham contract announcement.

“It is a huge moment for me and my family because it is every young player's dream to sign their first professional contract, especially at a club like West Ham United. It has given me a lot of confidence that the Club believes in me and hopefully I can do well at West Ham in the future. I have really enjoyed my time here so far. I felt really welcomed when I arrived ahead of last season and I am delighted to continue my development here.”

Tomas Soucek contract update

West Ham had been tipped to secure extensions for the likes of Tomas Soucek too, but according to a new report by Football Insider and journalist Pete O'Rourke, those talks have taken a downturn following a "major" update. The Czech Republic international's negotiations over fresh terms have apparently stalled over the last year, with Soucek out of contract at the end of 2023/2024.

West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek.

Indeed, the Hammers are keen to keep hold of Soucek, holding discussions over a new deal, but the lack of progress is "opening the door" for his exit and interested clubs including Serie A giants Inter. Soucek is a key component of the West Ham midfield and got on the scoresheet against Newcastle, with Moyes picking him out for praise.

"I’m pleased for Tomáš as he is making a good contribution with his goals, as did Mo today who got his first one for us, which was great," said Moyes.

"We have played Tomáš a bit higher in the last couple of games to try and get him near the box. Today was tough because we couldn’t get enough crosses or balls near the edge of their box, but he made it and he got the goal."

Erling Haaland Man City Contract Update

Manchester City are set to offer Erling Haaland a bumper new contract, amid interest from one of Europe's top clubs, and the Saudi Pro League, according to a report.

Is Erling Haaland staying at Man City?

Haaland's current Man City contract is not due to expire until the summer of 2027, meaning he has just under four years left on his deal, but there has still been speculation over whether he will be willing to commit his long-term future to the club.

In a documentary called "Haaland: The Big Decision", Alf-Inge Haaland suggested his son wants to try out every top league in Europe, saying:

“I think Erling wants to test out his capabilities in every league.

"Then he can stay in every league for three to four years maximum. He could have two-and-a-half years in Germany, two-and-a-half in England, and then in Spain, Italy, France, right?

“We do not know if it will be like that, but I think he would like to test his abilities in the big leagues.”

In a report from Marca, it is claimed the Norwegian one day wants to be a part of Real Madrid, although that was prior to his move to City, so he may have reconsidered his future, and could be open to staying in the Premier League.

The Sky Blues will certainly be hoping the 23-year-old is keen to commit to another new contract, to such an extent they are now willing to double his wages, with a £600k-per-week deal on the table if he extends his stay at the Etihad Stadium beyond 2027.

According to The Daily Star, Real Madrid remain huge admirers of the forward, and the Saudi Pro League is becoming ever more threatening, meaning Man City are willing to shell out a huge amount on wages, in a bid to ward off interest from elsewhere.

Right now, the former Borussia Dortmund man is City's joint-highest earner, alongside Kevin De Bruyne, but he is now in line for a 60.5% pay increase, should he sign a new deal to stay with Pep Guardiola's all-conquering side.

How many goals has Erling Haaland scored?

In his professional career up to this point, the Man City star has amassed a whopping 193 goals in 242 appearances, including 58 in 59 games for the Citizens, while he has also impressed at international level, scoring 24 times in 25 games.

Lauded as "incredible" by Guardiola, it is no wonder a number of clubs are lining up to sign the £375k-per-week marksman, and City could have a battle on their hands trying to keep him, considering he is weighing up playing in every major European league.

erling-haaland-manchester-city-arsenal-edu-arteta-napoli-victor-osimhen

Since the Norway international arrived at the Etihad Stadium, the Sky Blues have enjoyed unbelievable success, winning a historic treble last season, so there is no reason for him to seek pastures new anytime soon.

In order to keep one of their best players, City will likely have to keep winning silverware, but there is no reason why they cannot keep up their current success, having won a total of 15 trophies under the helm of Guardiola.
