Covid-19: NZC moves matches to Wellington as Auckland goes into lockdown

Next week’s T20Is in Auckland involving the Australia men’s team and the England women’s side have been relocated to Wellington, after Auckland was put into a week-long Covid-19 lockdown. The remaining matches of the two tours are set to be played behind closed doors.Under Level 3 of the New Zealand government’s alert system, which Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced would take effect from 6 AM on Sunday morning following the emergence of another case of community transmission, sports events cannot take place, which means that New Zealand Cricket has shifted the two matches on March 5 in an attempt to keep both series going. The rest of New Zealand has been placed in Level 2 of the alert system which means that matches will have to take place behind closed doors: New Zealand and England Women play their third ODI in Dunedin on Sunday and the men’s series against Australia resumes in Wellington on Wednesday.Under the current seven-day period of the lockdown there could be a change in time for the matches in Mount Maunganui on March 7 although a NZC spokesman indicated those games were likely to be without crowds.Auckland was briefly under a Level 3 lockdown earlier this month after the emergence of community cases but these will be the first international matches of the season to be affected by Covid-19.Bangladesh recently arrived in Christchurch for their two weeks of managed isolation ahead of their limited-overs matches later in March. The Australia Women side are also set to tour later next month.

Barca found themselves ahead in the first minute when Raphinha was sent bearing down on goal before smashing past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Kane had the ball in the net less than 10 minutes later, but it was ruled out for offside.

That was just a brief setback for the English forward, though, as he was soon found in the Barca again as he met Serge Gnabry's cross and pulled off an acrobatic finish to level matters.

The goal is Kane's 14th for Bayern this season, managing to reach the tally in just 11 matches in all competitions. The clash with Hansi Flick's team comes just days after he scored a third hat-trick of the season as Bayern beat Stuttgart 4-0 in the Bundesliga.

Rangers star agrees “astronomical” offer to leave Ibrox and join Gerrard

An "exceptional" Rangers player has agreed an "astronomical" deal to leave Ibrox this summer and join up with former manager Steven Gerrard, according to a fresh update.

Summer of change at Rangers

Euro 2024 may be taking centre stage in the footballing world, but Philippe Clement has been having an extremely productive summer transfer window to date, already bringing in a number of new faces.

The likes of Jefte, Connor Barron, Liam Kelly and Clinton Nsiala have all arrived on permanent deals, while Oscar Cortes will spend another season on loan at Ibrox, having arrived from Lens during the January window.

Oscar Cortes

It looks as though Rangers' business is far from done, with attacker Hamza Igamane seen as the next man to come in, arriving from Moroccan outfit AS FAR.

The Scottish Premiership giants have also been linked with a move for Tottenham ace Ryan Sessegnon, whose career has dipped after emerging as a hugely exciting teenager, but who could be desperate for a new challenge. He is considered someone who could provide further quality out wide alongside Cortes, too.

This has also been a summer of change when it comes to outgoings at Rangers, with a host of players moving on when their contracts expire, from Ryan Jack to Kemar Roofe. Now, another exit claim has emerged – and one that is likely to worry the supporters.

"Exceptional" Rangers hero on the move

According to a new development courtesy of Football Insider, James Tavernier has agreed to leave Rangers and join Gerrard at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, with an "astronomical" deal on the table.

The update claims that the "package in question is believed to 'massively' increase" the Gers captain's wages, and the player himself "has accepted the contract offer".

This is undoubtedly bad news for Rangers fans, considering Tavernier has arguably been the most impressive player at Ibrox over many years, providing a remarkable amount of end product from right-back.

Granted, the Englishman's numbers are aided by the fact that he takes penalties, but a tally of 125 goals and 129 assists in 460 appearances are the kind of statistics that a striker would be happy to register in his career. Clement waxed lyrical over him last season after he recorded the highest number of assists for a British defender:

"To be there on top – it’s an amazing achievement and we’re all proud of him. I said it in the dressing room also after the game. I don’t too often point out individual players, I don’t like it too much, but I had to do it this time. All the players are really proud of him, all the staff and the fans and everybody involved with Rangers. It’s really quite exceptional."

"Highly-rated" prospect has now "picked Rangers" over team worth £2.1bn

The update comes from reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano.

ByHenry Jackson Jun 28, 2024

At 32, Tavernier isn't getting any younger, so those of a more optimistic persuasion could point towards Rangers getting good money for an ageing player, but he is going to be extremely difficult to replace, both in terms of quality and leadership.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bellingham, Mbappe and Vinicius Junior are attracting plenty of attention – as they are billed as a ‘BMV’ unit to rival the ‘MSN’ and ‘BBC’ strike forces that once featured Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Neymar, Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo.

  • WHAT COURTOIS SAID

Brazil international Rodrygo is being overlooked in that discussion, despite being among the goals for club and country this season, with the 23-year-old also less than impressed at being left off the 30-man list of contenders for the 2024 Ballon d’Or. Madrid colleague Courtois has told streaming star Ibai of why that frustration can be channelled in a positive way: “Now journalists want to put three letters and they put Jude, Vini and Mbappe. We in the locker room know the importance and quality of Rodrygo, there is no need for him to get angry about that but if he plays better, then let him get angry.”

Aston Villa tracking £760-p/w Premier League midfielder similar to Kamara

Aston Villa are chasing a Premier League talent who ranks similarly to midfielder Boubacar Kamara ahead of a potential summer move, it has been reported.

Villa struggle without Kamara

Though Unai Emery's side are having an excellent Premier League season, it could have been even better had their midfield lynchpin not picked up a serious knee injury.

Signed on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, Boubacar Kamara has gone on to become one of the first names on the Aston Villa teamsheet when fit, so much so that captain John McGinn has been forced to play out wide in order to accommodate him.

However, Villa have had to play the last 15 games without the Frenchman after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in a game against Manchester United.

His absence has coincided with a drop-off in Villa's form. With Kamara not in the side, they are conceding more, winning less and picking up fewer points on average.

All of Douglas Luiz, Youri Tielemans and McGinn himself have been trialled in his position during his absence, but the lack of a true replacement for the Frenchman has undoubtedly had a damaging effect on Villa's season.

It will likely be trivial come the end of the campaign, with Villa seemingly set for Champions League football next season, but they will need to find a way to replace Kamara in the first part of next season, with the midfielder not expected back until September at the earliest, and likely not fully up to speed until later.

Now, they may have found a man to help share the role.

Villa chase youngster

That comes in the form of young Sheffield United midfielder Ollie Arblaster, who has shone for the relegated side since making his debut against Arsenal in March – a game that his side lost 6-0.

The 19-year-old only signed a new contract earlier this year, but is believed to earn just £760 a week at Bramall Lane.

Now, he is wanted by Villa, with The Telegraph reporting that the Midlands outfit are among those "circling" for the England youth international amid hopes that he could be a cheap addition following the Blades dropping into the second tier.

They add that "Sheffield United are determined to keep him", with the club captaincy not beyond him already, but a bid for his services against the backdrop of relegation may test that resolve.

£150k-p/w Aston Villa figure Emery dubbed "amazing" now set to leave

His departure this summer is looking increasingly likely.

ByBen Browning Apr 30, 2024

He has already come in for plenty of praise from his manager, with Chris Wilder recently dubbing him "the best on the park" against Chelsea, who fielded their two record signings against him.

“His performances have been incredibly consistent at the highest level – against Liverpool the way they press,” Wilder said.

“He was the best on the park against £200m of talent against Chelsea. He was good at Brentford and that was a different challenge.

“He was [the best] against Burnley and [against United], pound for pound against [Christian] Eriksen, and Man United have got a special kid in there as well [in Kobbie Mainoo], he was going to the end and making really good decisions with and without the ball.”

It is easy to see why Villa are keen, with data site FBref statistically ranking him as similar to Kamara, with Arblaster particularly excelling in defensive work. Should he be available, he could be a very savvy signing to provide cover and competition where Villa need it most.

Casemiro was not in the starting XI for the final against Manchester City, following rumours he was to be dropped. He was initially named on the bench but was then taken off it and the club's media department explained that the Brazilian midfielder was injured. However, three months on, Ten Hag has contradicted their side of the story.

"You have to make choices – what was needed for that particular game,” Ten Hag told . “But he is a very important player. He is a leader and he can make a difference for our team. No one can play every game. It’s impossible."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ten Hag's comments appear to confirm suspicions that Casemiro was not injured for the final but had refused to be on the bench after being dropped from the line-up. The Brazilian was one of United's worst performers in a miserable season and weeks before the FA Cup final, Jamie Carragher had urged him to quit elite football for his own good.
