Everton fans on ten Hag manager update

Some Everton fans have been left to buzz as Erik ten Hag has been named as a potential candidate to be the new manager at Goodison Park.

As per The Athletic, the current Ajax boss is on the shortlist of the Merseyside club to replace Carlo Ancelotti, who has left to go and manage Real Madrid.

However, the news outlet also claims that it is unlikely at this stage that ten Hag would take the job, especially given the fact that he signed a new one-year contract extension with the Dutch club until 2023 back in April (Sky Sports).

Nonetheless, he would seemingly be a popular choice among some members of the Toffees faithful, given that he has recently won the domestic double with Ajax (Transfermarkt).

The 51-year-old also famously guided an exciting Ajax team, containing names such as Matthijs De Ligt, Frenkie De Jong and Hakim Ziyech, to the UEFA Champions League semi-final stage in the 2018/19 season, only to be knocked out by a last-gasp Lucas Moura goal for Tottenham Hotspur.

West Ham gifted Lingard ‘advantage’

West Ham United and manager David Moyes have been gifted an ‘advantage’ in the race to sign Manchester United attacker Jesse Lingard this summer, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Moyes eyes Lingard move…

The Premier League ace has been on Moyes’ transfer radar for the better part of a year with reports first emerging in 2021 that West Ham wanted to make Lingard’s loan deal a permanent one.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, GSB’s efforts to prise away the England international were in vain, with Lingard electing to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his future under ex-boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Following his lack of game time, a January exit for Moyes’ long-term target was on the cards and West Ham even made late attempts to seal his London Stadium return in the winter.

The Irons couldn’t finalise his capture yet again, but as they reportedly go for third time lucky, Lingard’s soon-to-be free agent status could make his signing that bit less complicated.

The Latest: O’Rourke makes promising Lingard claim…

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Pete O’Rourke claims that West Ham have one ‘advantage’ in the race for United’s departing ace.

He also believes that Hammers supporters would certainly ‘encourage’ a move for Lingard going by his brilliant spell in east London last year.

When asked if the 29-year-old’s familiarity with Moyes at West Ham will be a factor, O’Rourke explained: “I think you’ve got to say that it gives them an advantage; they both know each other. Jesse Lingard was such a big fans’ favourite during his loan spell at West Ham, so the fans would definitely encourage that move.”

The Verdict: Get it done?

While the Europa League semi-finalists are arguable front-runners for Lingard, does that mean West Ham should be competing for his signature yet again this summer?

Moyes, as per reliable reports, is targeting a central defender, new midfielder, striker and potential reserve keeper to boost his 2022/2023 ranks.

Lingard is a player of proven top flight quality and experienced England international who has already shined under the Scotsman at West Ham.

The fact he could join for zero cost makes this an arguable no-brainer, even despite the frustrating sagas of West Ham’s last two efforts to sign him.

Moyes, by saving transfer funds on a swoop for Lingard, could then spend big on trying to seal world class central defensive and forward signings.

Called a would-be ‘massive signing’ for West Ham by former England keeper Paul Robinson, we believe that remains the case.

Ngamaleu signing will be bad news for Jones

Rangers have been linked with Young Boys winger Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu recently, and if he were to make the move to Ibrox this summer, it would surely be bad news for Jordan Jones’ future in Steven Gerrard’s squad.

According to TEAMtalk, Rangers are joined by Leeds United, Brighton, Everton and Leicester City in their interest in signing the Cameroon international this summer.

The 26-year-old has produced some superb performances in the Swiss Super League in recent years, contributing 12 goals and three assists in 2018/19, followed by seven goals and 10 assists last season.

Although he has just two goals and five assists to his name in the league this term, he did spend a period out sidelined due to the current viral outbreak, which may well have had an impact on his performances.

The versatile forward, who can play on either wing and even up front, has experience playing in both the Europa League and Champions League qualifying stages, so he should certainly add some quality to Gerrard’s squad this summer should he make the move to Ibrox.

His arrival could spell the end for Jones, who has struggled to impress since signing from Kilmarnock in the summer of 2019, with just one goal and two assists to his name in 19 appearances.

The Northern Ireland international was sent on loan to Sunderland in January and whilst he has impressed in Lee Johnson’s side at times with three goals and four assists thus far, it seems unlikely that he will be able to re-establish himself in Gerrard’s first team again next season.

With Rangers set to feature in the Champions League next term, you could argue that they need to add serious strength in depth and axe some of the players who are no longer deemed good enough. Bringing in Ngamaleu and letting Jones leave on a permanent deal seems like the sort of business that sporting director Ross Wilson should be looking to execute.

To have a Cameroon international who has consistently impressed in Switzerland’s dominant club both domestically and in Europe should certainly help to take Gerrard’s side to the next level in 2021/22, as it would give the manager serious choice in the wide positions along with the likes of Ryan Kent, Ianis Hagi and Scott Wright.

Therefore, Wilson should definitely be looking to bring Ngamaleu to Ibrox this summer, which unfortunately could prove to be the catalyst for Jones departing on a permanent deal.

In other news… Assombalonga’s potential signing could be the final nail in the coffin for one Gerrard favourite at Ibrox.

Journalist all but rules out West Ham signing Burnley’s James Tarkowski

Jack Rosser, from the Evening Standard, thinks that West Ham will be looking at alterative targets after confirming that James Tarkowski is likely to stay at Burnley.

The Hammers pushed hard to sign the Clarets defender last summer, and bid £30m for his services, but missed out on signing him due to Burnley’s persistence.

Tarkowski has now entered the final 12 months of his deal at Turf Moor, which means West Ham could sign him for considerably less than that amount.

However, Rosser thinks that the 28-year-old, who’s made 159 Premier League appearances since joining from Brentford, will see out the final year of his contract and become a free agent in 2022.

He told The Transfer Tavern:

“Tarkowski is someone he [David Moyes] likes and pushed hard for last year, but I think that ship has sailed.

“He has got a year left on his contract at Burnley, and his plan is to see out that final year at Turf Moor and then move on a free and really open his options, so he’s the one in control.

“So, I would be surprised to see Tarkowski make the move down now.”

This really is a blow for Moyes. Signing a proven Premier League centre-back on the cheap really would have been shrewd business.

And with European football to come and one less centre-back following Fabian Balbuena’s departure, the Hammers boss has his work cut out to improve defence.

Sheffield Utd set to sanction Jebbison move

Sheffield United centre-forward Daniel Jebbison looks set to secure a move away from Bramall Lane this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Sheffield Star, who claimed that, after assessing his attacking options at Sheffield United, Slavisa Jokanovic is of the view that sending the 18-year-old out on loan next season would further his development more than keeping him within the Blades’ first team squad.

The report added that Sunderland is the preferred destination for the centre-forward, as the Serbian manager feels that the weight of playing for a club with the stature of the Black Cats would help the striker’s mental development, although the Blades are open to proposals from other sides who may be keen to take the youngster on a season-long loan.

Grave error

While it is true that playing regular first team football will undoubtedly benefit Jebbison more than simply sitting on the bench next season, the argument could easily be made that the 18-year-old is more than deserving of being afforded a chance to lead the Sheffield United line before a decision is made on whether or not he should be sent out on loan.

Indeed, despite his tender age, the £900k-rated man impressed over his four Premier League appearances last term, scoring one goal – the winner on his Premier League debut against Everton – along with averaging one shot and 0.3 key passes per game.

These performances led to the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United and Chelsea taking note of the striker, while Micah Richards dubbed the youngster as Sheffield United’s “shining light”, also stating his belief that the player is a “fantastic” talent.

As such, with none of the other Sheffield United forwards doing anything last season to seal their place as the Blades’ first-choice option at centre-forward for the upcoming Championship campaign, and with the transfer market remaining open until the end of August, Jebbison may well feel aggrieved he has not been given an opportunity to display his talents for his club in the second tier before they send him out on loan.

Indeed, should the Blades struggle for goals next term while Jebbison is possibly banging them in out on loan, Jokanovic’s decision could well prove to be something of a grave mistake by the Serbian coach if he follows through on his intentions to loan out the teenager.

Palmer drops verdict on Pulis silence

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer believes Tony Pulis has been silent following his sacking from the Yorkshire club likely because of some sort of financial agreement.

Pulis was appointed as Wednesday manager last November, brought in as a replacement for Garry Monk, but was dismissed just 10 games later as the Owls continued to struggle in the Championship.

Following his Hillsborough exit, the 63-year-old has not said too much despite all of the drama that went on during his time at the club, which included the threat of a transfer embargo.

And Palmer has suggested that the above is probably due to an agreement he made with owner Dejphon Chansiri. On Pulis’ silence, the ex-Wednesday player told FFC in an exclusive interview:

“It’s interesting that Tony’s never come out and said anything. And I’m assuming that’s due to the money that they paid him, that he’s not allowed to say anything.

“But it’d be interesting to know what he agreed with the chairman, why he went in there and why he left so quickly.”

In contrast, Monk has been very outspoken since his axing from the Hillsborough dugout, telling The Athletic (via The Star) that it was a “mistake” to join Wednesday and that he knew it was a club that had a lot of problems.

Palmer: Appleton snub proves there’s something wrong at West Brom

Michael Appleton’s decision to turn down West Brom proves there is something wrong at the club at the moment, claims former Baggies midfielder Carlton Palmer.

Valerien Ismael was named West Brom manager on Thursday after leaving Barnsley, replacing Sam Allardyce in The Hawthorns dugout.

However, prior, it was reported by Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett that Appleton had informed the Midlands club that he was not interested in becoming their new boss, instead preferring to see his project at Lincoln City through.

For Palmer, given that the Imps are in League One, there must be a serious issue at West Brom for Appleton to reject them.

“There’s something not right, why so many managers were turning down the job,” the ex-England international exclusively told FFC.

“I mean, you look at Appleton. Why would he, no disrespect to Lincoln, but why would he turn down the West Brom job? It’s a massive job, right? So something’s not right.”

West Brom’s search for Allardyce’s successor was far from a simple one, complicated by snubs from the likes of Appleton and David Wagner.

In that time, sporting director Luke Dowling also left the club, so it has all been a bit chaotic. The Baggies have finally got their man, though, so can now start preparing properly for the new season.

Klopp really wants Adeyemi at Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp ‘really wants’ Karim Adeyemi to join his squad as negotiations with RB Salzburg are ongoing, according to journalist Ekrem Konur.

The Lowdown: Sizzling Salzburg Striker

Adeyemi, 19, has caught the eye of some of the best clubs in Europe with his terrific record at Red Bull Salzburg, with the Germany international scoring 21 goals in 66 appearances, assisting 17 also.

The striker has come on leaps and bounds since making his debut and is now the Austrian club’s main man up-front following the departure of Patson Daka to Leicester City last summer.

With the striker showing his worth in the Champions League this season, the chances of a move elsewhere next summer will increase as his performances continue to stand out.

The Latest: Klopp keen on Adeyemi

According to Konur on Twitter, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp really wants to sign Adeyemi and talks between the two clubs are continuing on financial issues.

Konur also stated that Adeyemi wants to play in the top-level leagues and prove himself, following in the footsteps of Erling Haaland, who now plays for Borussia Dortmund.

Germany head coach Hansi Flick labelled Adeyemi ‘ice-cold’ after the teenager scored on his national debut.

The Verdict: Future move

The signing of Adeyemi would fill the hole that Liverpool have missing in the middle of their front three. With Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota alternating in that role, they lack an out-and-out striker, offering Klopp the chance to rest and rotate his key forwards.

Only 19, the German striker has years to grow and adapt to English football, but his track record in front of goal demonstrates his ability.

Whilst Daka has struggled to adapt to the Premier League, Haaland’s record at Dortmund since joining has placed him as one of the best strikers around and Adeyemi will be hoping to replicate the Norway international’s rise.

Spurs gem in line for contract extension

Tottenham Hotspur academy graduate Oliver Skipp is in line for a new contract after his impressive breakthrough into Nuno Santo’s first-team this season…

What’s the word?

That’s according to football.london’s Alasdair Gold, who dropped an intriguing claim during a recent online Q&A with supporters.

When asked about the 21-year-old’s long-term future amid speculation he was in line to receive a bumper new deal, the ever-reliable reporter seemingly confirmed such news.

The Sun reported last month that Spurs were preparing to hand the young midfielder a new deal worth £40k-per-week, an increase from around £25k-per-week.

Gold said: “I think it’s just a matter of time.

“He’s a key starter now and he’s only going to get better. He loves it at the club and is a far more developed player than the one who signed a four-year deal 15 months ago, so I think that will be sorted sooner rather than later.”

Fans will be delighted

This would be just desserts for his fine form and emergence in the starting XI in 2021/22.

He has started six of their eight league games, as well as both their UEFA Europa Conference League group matches and the win over Wolves in the Carabao Cup, via Transfermarkt.

In that time, he has seen his value soar to £13.5m, having been £9m less than two-and-a-half years ago, just a few months after making his first-ever start in the Premier League in a 1-0 win over Burnley.

His presence at the base of midfield has been crucial in recent weeks.

He has averaged 2.4 tackles per game, a feat only bettered by the more senior Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Emerson Royal, whilst no player who has started two games or more has done better with the ball at his feet, having averaged a 90.5% passing accuracy, as per WhoScored.

Skipp is widely thought to be a leader in the making after former manager Jose Mourinho tipped him to one day become the team’s captain. He told reporters, via the Evening Standard: “I think he’s genuinely Tottenham’s future”, before later adding: “I see this kid being one day a future captain here by his character, by his personality.”

More recently, England U21 head coach Lee Carsley dubbed him “underrated”, also claiming:

“He’s one of those players that when they are not in the team you notice them. He goes about his business really well. Works on his game. I think he’s still got a lot of development to do.

“He’s going to get better, he’s going to get stronger. Physically he’ll improve the older he gets. He has outstanding ability and I’m sure Tottenham see that as we have as well over the years.”

Much of the Lilywhites faithful have also been left impressed by the young midfield terrier, as seen by their reactions in games against Newcastle United this weekend and during the aforementioned Carabao Cup clash.

They will therefore be absolutely delighted by this exciting development.

Steve Bull calls for Wolves to spend big in transfer window

Club legend Steve Bull says money needs to be put into Wolverhampton Wanderers to avoid a relegation scrap next season.

Nuno Espirito Santo, who has since taken charge of Tottenham Hotspur, mutually agreed to walk away from Molineux at the end of last term.

He has been replaced as head coach by fellow Portuguese Bruno Lage, who previously won the Portuguese title with Benfica.

Wolves have been busy in the transfer market, with promising winger Francisco Trincao joining on loan from Barcelona and defender Yerson Mosquera trading Colombian outfit Atletico Nacional for the Premier League.

Rayan Ait-Nouri has also linked up with Wolves on a permanent basis following an impressive loan spell from French side Angers.

However, Wolves have been rocked by the news that Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio has left the club in favour of joining Jose Mourinho at Italian side Roma.

Bull has called for Wolves’ hierarchy to back Lage in the remainder of the transfer window.

He exclusively told The Transfer Tavern: “If we want to be in a dogfight or the lower half of the league next year, keep going the way you are.

“They’re dumping no money into the club and getting a decent manager in. Wolves fans have been sitting there for the last four years knowing we can give it a right go with the right manager and players intact.”
