Clement could land McCausland rival in Rangers move for "agile" whiz

Glasgow Rangers will be looking to bring in at least another two players before the end of the current January transfer window in order to strengthen their first-team squad.

Philippe Clement has already lured talented young striker Fabio Silva from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a six-month loan spell, but more additions will be required as they look to add to their League Cup triumph this season.

The Belgian has enjoyed a solid start to life at Ibrox, but he must not rest on his laurels and continue to keep the team focused ahead of fresh challenges in the coming months.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

There have been a few names linked with a move to the club recently as the 49-year-old coach eyes reinforcements and the next couple of weeks could be interesting indeed.

While the left-back position remains a priority, the Gers are also targeting players to bolster other areas of the team and this has led to rumours linking the Light Blues with a move for a current Boca Juniors gem.

Rangers’ search for new signings

According to a report from the Evening Standard's Dom Smith earlier this week, the Ibrox side are eyeing up a swoop for Luca Langoni from the Argentinian side this month as they look to improve their attacking options.

As per Smith, Rangers have already made an approach to sign the player during the current transfer window, yet they could face plenty of competition for his signature.

Premier League side Fulham were linked with the talented youngster earlier in January, while Nice and Sevilla have also reportedly made approaches to bring him to Europe.

This suggests that Clement will need to act rather swiftly in order to bring him to Scotland and with the window closing in 14 days, he does not have the luxury of time.

The Gers are slightly thin on the ground when it comes to attacking options, as Abdallah Sima is representing Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations, while Danilo remains unavailable due to a knee injury.

Ross McCausland has emerged as a permanent fixture on the right wing for the club in recent months. Could Langoni become a rival for his place in the starting XI should he join Rangers?

Ross McCausland has shone under Clement

The Northern Irish winger made his senior debut for the Gers way back in May 2022 and even grabbed an assist, and it looked like a sign of things to come.

He would have to wait until the end of the 2022/23 campaign to make his next appearance, yet under Clement, the youngster has thrived this term.

Across 18 matches in all competitions, McCausland has scored twice and the strike against Aris Limassol before Christmas was his first goal for the Light Blues in a tie where the club had to avoid defeat.

The 20-year-old has begun to make his mark on the team and, in the Premiership, he has averaged 1.4 key passes per game, created two big chances and succeeded with one dribble per game, solid figures for a player who is still developing and learning all the time.

With his contract due to expire at the end of the season, Clement was keen to tie him down to a long-term deal and McCausland ended up signing an extension until 2027 in what could be a shrewd move by the manager.

Gaining the opportunity to play on a regular basis will prove to be vital in seeing the winger continue his development and, while at times he is not the most consistent, there shouldn’t be too much pressure placed on his young shoulders.

By signing Langoni, however, could Clement sign a player who will be a direct rival for McCausland in the future?

How Luca Langoni fits into the Rangers team

The 21-year-old made his debut for Boca in 2022 and went on to score six goals in just 18 league matches for the club, showcasing his vast talents and proving that he could be the next big thing to emerge from their youth sides.

He followed this up with three goals in 12 matches in the top flight during the 2023 campaign and his ten goals and two assists in just 45 senior matches for the club is an impressive start to his senior career.

The youngster enjoys dazzling on the right wing and producing the odd piece of skill and, while this may work in Argentina, the physicality of Scottish football indicates that he may need to refine his playing style in order to be successful in Scotland.

Kai Watson, founder of the Rangers Journal, profiled the player amid the rumours linking him with a move to Ibrox and outlined his thoughts on the young Argentinian.

He said: “Langoni is quick, agile, and confident running at defenders. His low centre of gravity allows him to get in between and passed defenders.

“However, his end product has been lacking despite his promise on the ball. He was touted as the next big thing coming out of Boca but the injuries have derailed his progress.

“It’s clear he’s still highly rated, as previously mentioned Fulham, Nice and Sevilla are also supposedly interested.”

Regarding injuries, Langoni has missed a total of 38 matches in his relatively short senior career due to a succession of muscle injuries and this could be slightly concerning for Clement, especially with the volume of injuries his current side seem to have.

If the Belgian can keep him healthy, however, there is no doubt Langoni could be a direct rival for McCausland on the right wing and this competition may spur them on to better performances.

It isn’t often the Gers are linked with someone from Boca Juniors, and it could be the ideal chance to cast the net afar and look to the likes of South America for emerging talent.

It remains to be seen how much the talented whiz would cost should a potential move occur, but one thing remains clear, snatching up players of his talent should be the onus for the former AS Monaco manager going forward.

    WHAT YOUNG SAID

It was, however, the arrival of former Manchester United and England goalkeeper Ben Foster in March 2023 – when the Red Dragons were still a National League outfit – that raised the most eyebrows. Former Wrexham captain Young has told the of that shock signing: “Again, a crazy moment. You hear talk about him signing and you’re like: ‘Nah, not going to happen’. And then nothing gets announced that he has signed but you walk into the club and into the canteen to have breakfast and there he is, sat eating breakfast. Ahhh right, yeah, we’ve just signed Ben Foster. It was a surreal moment and again, it has shown the calibre of players the club can attract.”

The presence of Reynolds and McElhenney has aided that cause, with Young adding on celebrity co-owners that are fully committed to the collective cause: “As soon as you meet them and speak to them, they’re like genuine people, they really are. You take your hat off to them, putting in the time and the effort they have done into this football club, not only from a footballing point of view, but also a community point of view as well. Everything they’ve done is for the best of the club and town. They’re doing that in abundance and I’m sure they’ll continue doing that in the future.”

Tottenham player now told to find new club as Ange decides to axe him

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has now decided to axe a "very exciting" Spurs player who's also been told to find a new club before February 1.

Ivan Perisic, who joined Hajduk Split on a season-long loan and will join them permanently for free when his Spurs contract expires, has agreed to be paid just 85p a week – in what is an incredible gesture to his boyhood club.

Dier, who was on a reported £85,000-per-week salary at Tottenham, joined Bayern Munich on loan and will again sign for them permanently when his contract expires in the summer – giving Thomas Tuchel's side the chance to seal his signature for free later this year.

Alongside Dier and Perisic, the likes of Djed Spence, Japhet Tanganga, Sergio Reguilon and Ashley Phillips have also moved elsewhere on temporary deals – trimming Postecoglou's squad and balancing the books.

While a good few squad members have departed Tottenham, reports suggest more could follow them. Emerson Royal has been subject to bids from Al Nassr, while uncertainty still surrounds the future of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Many media sources in recent months have claimed that Hojbjerg could be replaced by Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, as Postecoglou eyes a new midfield running man.

However, as time runs out to make that a reality, perhaps a more likely exit could be that of Spurs starlet Bryan Gil.

The 22-year-old is expected to leave north London before deadline day, amid interest from clubs in both Spain and Italy.

Gil told to find new club after Postecoglou decision

HITC and journalist Graeme Bailey have an update on his future this week, and they claim Spurs have told Gil to find a new club.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou has apparently decided that the Spaniard doesn't feature in his long-term plans, and there are many suitors late in the window.

Sevilla, Real Sociedad, Valencia and Lazio are the interested clubs abroad, while Brentford, Brighton, Crystal Palace and Fulham could be options closer to home.

Called "very exciting" by editor David Cartlidge, supporters will perhaps be disappointed if Gil leaves permanently, as he arrived with a lot of promise.

Former Spurs boss Antonio Conte, despite hardly playing the former Sevilla starlet, even claimed he was born to play football.

Denzel Dumfries to Aston Villa development as contact made over summer move

Heading into the January transfer window, Unai Emery and Aston Villa wanted to sign a right-back, with Matty Cash the only specialist option available. The goal was to find somebody who could provide both cover and competition for the Polish defender.

Villa were able to strike a deal for Red Star Belgrade youngster Kosta Nedeljkovic, who's staying put in the Serbian capital on loan until the end of the season before he joins up with Emery's squad in the summer.

Kosta Nedeljkovic.

The problem with Nedeljkovic is that he's still so inexperienced, having only made 18 first-team appearances for Red Star so far. As such, there may be doubts over whether he'll be ready to play meaningful Premier League minutes as soon as next season, and that could lead Villa to a more experienced, shorter-term option in Denzel Dumfries.

Aston Villa make contact over Dumfries move

According to FC Inter News, Villa have now seemignly made contact with the agent of Dumfries as they have 'tested the waters with the agents' to discuss a potential summer move. It's unclear whether Emery's interest will "become serious or fade away", but the Spaniard is already thinking about the composition of his squad for next season.

Crucially, Dumfries is out of contract in 18 months' time, and there's currently "no dialogue" between the Serie A leaders and his agency Wasserman, which also represents Villa duo Tyrone Mings and Clement Lenglet.

While Inter still regard Dumfries as an important player, they're not willing to pay him the kind of salary he's demanding, and unless the situation changes, they plan to sell him this summer to ensure they don't lose him for nothing in the final year of his contract.

Bayern Munich had previously been showing interest in the Dutchman but they're no longer in the market for a right-back after signing Sacha Boey from Galatasaray last month, while Erik ten Hag is keen to bring him to Manchester United. Inter are hopeful of drumming up a bidding war, so the news of Villa's approach will be welcome.

Dumfries could be "ideal" signing for Villa

Retired compatriot Rafael van der Vaart has spoken glowingly of Dumfries, calling him the top player in the Netherlands national team – a group that also includes Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong and Cody Gakpo.

He said: "Dumfries is our big star. He is really our very best player at the moment, he’s involved in everything. He is always on the move. A really great player. His touches are also good, which was different in the past. He is the ideal full-back."

Dumfries has certainly been an "ideal" option for Simone Inzaghi at San Siro this season. As you can see in the table above, he's the fifth-most creative player in the league when you go by the underlying numbers, with teammate Federico Dimarco also up there.

One key point to note is that Inzaghi has been using a back three this season, which means Dumfries has played as a wing-back rather than slotting in on the right of a four. Emery has only used a similar system twice in the league this term, so there may have to be a mutual adaptation process if this deal gets done.

Chelsea could’ve signed perfect Jackson upgrade and Palmer partner in one

It would be hard to describe this season as anything other than a car crash for Chelsea, as back-to-back hammerings from Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League have all but ended the Blues' chance of European qualification.

There is still the League Cup final to come, but with the Anfield outfit as their opponent, it is hard to see how they'll be lifting that come full-time.

While there are plenty of problems at the club, one of the biggest is their frontline's inability to finish their chances.

Nicolas Jackson has become infamous for his myriad of misses this season, and what makes it worse is the club's failure to sign a replacement they were heavily linked with last month, a man who would've given them a chance at Wembley and formed a brilliant partnership with Cole Palmer.

Close but no Cigar

Now, clubs like Chelsea are often linked with a multitude of players every transfer window, and while a significant portion of these stories are nothing more than rumours, the links to Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres last month seemed genuine.

Things looked even more real when it was revealed that the Blues had made a £73m bid for the Swedish international halfway through the window.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

However, with a release clause worth closer to £86m, the Portuguese giants were unwilling to accept the offer, so Todd Boehly and Co appeared to call it quits.

While this decision to walk away might have been wise from a financial point of view, considering the reluctance to spend from English clubs, it also seriously handicapped what the club could achieve on the pitch for the rest of the season.

Gyokeres could have turned Chelsea's season around

Now, unfortunately for Chelsea, their season has gone so poorly this year that in this case, 'turning it around' would likely just mean qualification for the Conference League and potentially winning the League Cup at the expense of Liverpool; while you may think that's unlikely, Gyokeres' goal record speaks for itself.

In 25 appearances for Sporting across all competitions this season, the former Coventry City ace has scored a remarkable 21 goals and provided nine assists, meaning he is averaging a goal involvement every 0.83 matches.

What makes it more impressive is that he is not being flooded with chances either, as his 15 league goals have come from an expected goals figure of 10.9, and his 12 non-penalty expected goals come from a non-penalty expected goals figure of 8.5.

In short, the dynamic "powerhouse", as described by data analyst Ben Mattinson, has been consistently overperforming his expected goals figure this season. In contrast, Jackson has seven league goals from a figure of 10.8, which would explain why he has picked up a reputation for being profligate.

Had the Blues just pushed the boat out that little bit more last month and signed the "unplayable" 25-year-old, as former teammate Maxim Biamou described him, then the talismanic Palmer would have had a genuine poacher to work with at the top of the pitch.

The former Manchester City gem has been one of the few bright spots in the Pensioners' bleak season, but his creative numbers have been impacted by his teammate's inability to finish the chances he creates.

Yamal is currently impressing for Spain at Euro 2024, despite only being 16 still. Alongside starting both games against Italy and Croatia, he has been seen completing his homework in the dressing room. • WHAT DE LA FUENTE SAID

Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has been vocal of his admiration for Yamal, following his strong showings in the national side already. "We have the ability to continue to impose our style. We played very well with a high press, which allowed us to get the ball back. But one of the characteristics of Spain is our ability to change approaches and that variety is our strength," he said.

"We have different qualities, different tactical approaches, and that’s an extra difficulty for opponents. No Jackson & "incredible" ace starts in predicted Chelsea lineup v Man City

Chelsea are one of the most entertaining sides to watch in the Premier League this season; if you're neutral, that is.

One week, they might lose 4-1 to Liverpool and 4-2 to Wolverhampton Wanderers, only to win at Villa Park and Selhurst Park 3-1 the following week.

Mauricio Pochettino has a talented core of promising youngsters at Stamford Bridge, and while that might be good for the long-term, it has hindered them this season as they currently sit in tenth, with the eighth-best attack and the 13th-best defence.

However, everything can change off the back of a great result, and the Pensioners have the chance to shock the rest of the league this evening as they travel to the Etihad to take on Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

If it's anything like the pair's last meeting, fans will be in for a treat, and with a win in the previous game, Pochettino won't look to make more than three personal changes to the XI from Monday.

1

GK – Đorđe Petrović

One of the first names on the teamsheet currently is Serbian goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović.

The 24-year-old has been the team's number one since Robert Sanchez injured his wrist against Everton just before Christmas.

However, with some reasonably impressive performances between the sticks, he might just keep his place in the team, even with the Spaniard now supposedly back to full fitness.

2

RB – Malo Gusto

Another player in the team due to an injury is French right-back Malo Gusto.

The former Lyon ace was signed in the summer to act as cover for the increasingly injury-prone Reece James, and while he's had some shakey games this season, notably against Wolverhampton Wanderers, he's generally been a solid member of the squad.

He's started six of the last seven Premier League games, so it would be a big shock not to see him in action from the first minute against City.

3

CB – Thiago Silva

Axel Disasi will also almost certainly keep his place in the side, as the Frenchman has been reasonably impressive in the last couple of games.

He certainly hasn't had the smoothest of rides since joining the club in the summer, but considering he has started 92% of league games under Poch, it seems he has the manager's backing.

4

CB – Levi Colwill

ronald-araujo-levi-colwill-liverpool-opinion

The second centre-back spot brings with it the first change in the lineup, as Cobham graduate Levi Colwill comes in for the injured Thiago Silva.

The young Englishman came off the bench in the 61st minute against Palace on Monday night, so he should be fit enough to start at the Etihad.

A pairing of the 20-year-old "Rolls-Royce", as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, and Disasi is likely the Blue's best chance of holding the marauding Erling Haaland at bay this evening.

5

LB – Ben Chilwell

Ben Chiwell Chelsea

With Colwill playing in his natural position of centre-back, Pochettino will almost certainly start Ben Chilwell at left-back.

Since recovering from his hamstring injury, the England international has started the previous three Premier League games, and while he certainly hasn't been at his best, he is Chelsea's best left-back.

6

DM – Moises Caicedo

Moises Caicedo

The first midfielder in this XI is the £115m man himself, Moises Caicedo.

It has been a tough first season in west London for the Ecuadorian international, but he has shown glimpses of quality here and there, and while he was underwhelming on Monday night, he'll start this evening.

Poch has started the 22-year-old in 83% of league games this season, and he started for Brighton & Hove Albion last season when they drew with City at the Amex.

7

DM – Enzo Fernández

Starting alongside Caicedo is the man of the moment, Enzo Fernández.

Like his midfield partner, the World Cup winner has not had the easiest of rides since joining the Blues last year, but in recent games, he has stepped up a level.

He bossed Villa off the park in the FA Cup and scored an unreal free-kick, and while he wasn't quite as effective against Palace, he still scored another goal.

8

RM – Cole Palmer

The right-wing brings with it the second change in the lineup as Noni Madueke is benched for Cole Palmer to come in and fill the vacancy.

Madueke failed to deliver against Palace, and it was his mistake that led directly to the opening goal.

On the other hand, Palmer was quite impressive at Selhurst Park – delivering two assists – but considering the quality of the opponent tonight, it makes sense to try to bring him into the action more by starting him slightly deeper.

9

CAM – Conor Gallagher

Conor Gallagher Chelsea

Keeping his place as the most attacking midfielder in the XI is Conor Gallagher.

The fan-favourite has been reasonably impressive for most of the season and has finally added goals to his game with a strike against Aston Villa in the FA Cup and another couple against Palace on Monday.

The Englishman has started 96% of league games this season, so it's a sure bet he'll start this evening.

10

LM – Raheem Sterling

The third change to the team comes out on the left as Nicolas Jackson makes way for the experienced Raheem Sterling.

Jackson was impressive against Villa last week but was rather underwhelming against Palace on Monday – making just 26 touches – and with chances likely to be in short supply this evening, it makes sense to drop him to the bench.

Moreover, the "incredible" Sterling, as dubbed by former manager Guardiola, was unreal in the last game against City.

He scored Chelsea's second goal of the game and was given a 9/10 for his performance by the Standard's Nizaar Kinsella.
