Lionel Messi is Mr. Reliable! PSG winners, losers & ratings as Argentina star steps up with Mbappe & Neymar out

Lionel Messi scored a second-half winner against Toulouse on Saturday to lift the Ligue 1 leaders in the absence of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

Lionel Messi lurked for most of Paris Saint-Germain's contest against Toulouse. He floated around, enjoyed a few touches, and served as an unnerving presence, more a warning than an attacking threat.

But then, he came to life. As he always does. With PSG locked at 1-1 with the mid-table side, Messi drifted towards the top of the box, and whipped a loose ball into the bottom corner.

Messi has scored that goal countless times. And on this occasion, it lifted PSG to a vital Ligue 1 win.

Toulouse took the lead inside 20 minutes, with Branco van den Boomen sweeping a free kick past a wrong-footed Gianluigi Donnarumma.

PSG struggled for a creative spark in the fitness-related absence of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, with Lionel Messi a peripheral figure in the early goings. Achraf Hakimi provided a moment of magic, though, firing into the bottom corner from 20 yards out to equalise.

Things changed in the second half, with Messi inevitably popping up with the goal to put his side ahead. Hakimi laid the ball off to the World Cup winner just outside the box, who curled his shot past a helpless goalkeeper.

Toulouse had one clear chance late on, but Donnarumma equaled a scrappy effort after a scramble in the box. And it was all about Messi in the end, the Argentine stepping up in the absence of Mbappe and Neymar, dragging PSG to the finish line.

    The Winners

    Achraf Hakimi:

On a day where PSG lacked creativity from their attacking players, Hakimi stepped up. He scored PSG's equaliser, cutting onto his weaker left foot before curling his effort into the far corner. Hakimi often found himself the furthest man forward, pushing down the right wing and stretching the Toulouse back-line. It was never likely to be a tricky defensive game for the Morocco international, and he made sure to impact play at the other end.

    Lionel Messi:

Inevitable, wasn't it? Everything seemed primed for one of games for Messi. Neymar and Mbappe out, the team struggling to create, a dogged defensive opponent. And so it continued, with Toulouse keeping Messi quiet for long stretches. The goal, predictably, came. It was a vintage Messi strike, curled into the far corner from just outside the box, with no space to work with. The World Cup winner had little further impact on the game, but it didn't really matter. Their Argentine magician had done it. What a player.

    Warren Zaire-Emery:

Rarely is a player so young so composed. Zaire-Emery became PSG's second-youngest ever Ligue 1 scorer with a calm finish midweek, and he built on that on Saturday. Yes, PSG have midfield injury problems. But the 16-year-old Zaire Emery was brought on for the misfiring Carlos Soler with 15 minutes remaining in a tight game — a clear indication of his manager's trust. This wasn't a flawless performance from the youngster – he looked a bit lost in more advanced positions – but every minute on the pitch is crucial for a player who looks increasingly ready to fulfil his potential as one of the world's best teenagers.

    The Losers

    Renato Sanches:

PSG manager Christophe Galtier really seems to like Sanches. The Portuguese midfielder played under him at Lille last year, and he's started to show signs of the midfielder many expected him to be when he burst onto the scene as a teenager. His PSG career, though, has been marred by time spent on the sidelines. The injury bug reared its head again on Saturday. Sanches seemed to clutch his thigh and was in tears as he walked off the pitch after just 11 minutes. At the very least, it's encouraging that Sanches could help himself off. But he could face more time off the pitch.

    Carlos Soler:

In a way, Soler is tasked with a near impossible job. Although PSG change their style without Neymar, Soler is asked to do a similar thing: make runs forward and create in the final third. The issue is, Soler is not Neymar. Galtier, of course, knows this. But the expectation that the Spaniard should make something happen seems to weigh on him. Soler frequently tries to do too much, and some of his quality in the final third is lacking. He was better Saturday than sometimes in the recent past, especially when the game became more stretched. But in the early goings, Soler looked like a weak link. He has been agreeable, if unspectacular, since coming into the side due to a litany of injuries. The dropoff from any of PSG's front three to Soler is glaring, though.

    PSG Ratings: Defence

    Gianluigi Donnarumma (6/10):

Wrong footed for Toulouse's opener, but redeemed himself with an impressive save late on.

    Achraf Hakimi (8/10):

A memorable showing. Scored the first and assisted the second, and was often the furthest PSG player forward.

    Marquinhos (7/10):

    Some nice blocks, reliable passes.

    Danilo Pereira (6/10):

Solid at the back, even better when moved to the no.6

    Nuno Mendes (5/10):

Still working his way back to full fitness. Could've been sent off for a rash challenge when already on a yellow.

    Carlos Soler (6/10):

Fine, but not Neymar. Which is tricky when you're supposed to be doing the stuff that Neymar does.

    Renato Sanches (5/10):

Substituted within the first 15 minutes. Another injury blow for a player who just can't seem to stay fit.

    Fabian Ruiz (5/10):

Followed a masterclass with an anonymous showing. A thoroughly strange footballer.

    Vitinha (6/10):

Offered much-needed energy, got into the box quite a bit.

From Glenn Hoddle to William Gallas – Meet the players who played for both Chelsea and Tottenham

10 players have represented both Chelsea and Tottenham

Over the years, derbies around London have been intense, to say the least.

Among the multiple great clubs fighting for local supremacy in the area, there is one particular derby between West and North London that often catches the eye every season.

Chelsea and Tottenham are two top clubs in the city and both these teams have seen some great superstars represent them over the years.

But, how many players featured for The Blues and The Lilywhites?

GOAL takes a look!

    William Gallas

The one player in this list to have played for Chelsea, Tottenham, and Arsenal, William Gallas began his spell in England with the Blues.

He formed a rock-solid defensive partnership with John Terry which propelled Chelsea to win their first league title in half a century.

He moved to Arsenal in 2006 after a major controversy that led to Chelsea issuing a statement that Gallas threatened to deliberately score own goals if he wasn't allowed to leave Stamford Bridge.

The French center-back made 159 appearances for Chelsea, and after four seasons and 101 appearances for the Gunners, he moved to Tottenham in 2010.

    Colin Lee

Colin Lee joined Tottenham Hotspur in 1977 and made an instant impact by scoring four goals on his debut in a 9-0 win over Bristol Rovers. He helped Spurs to gain promotion that season.

He returned to the second division three years later and signed for Chelsea for £200,000.

With the Blues, Lee scored 36 goals in 185 appearances between 1980 and 1987. He helped Chelsea win promotion to the First Division after winning the Second Division in 1984.

    Terry Venables

Terry Venables started his career at youth level at Chelsea.

The midfielder graduated from their academy in 1960 and made over 200 appearances in his six-year stay in West London. He made his senior debut at the age of just 15 and many newspapers at that time labeled him as the new "Duncan Edwards".

Tottenham Hotspur signed him in 1966 for £80,000. Venables later went on to feature for QPR and Crystal Palace.

    Graham Roberts

FA Cup and Uefa Cup winner with Tottenham, Graham Roberts made over 200 appearances for the Lillywhites between 1980 and 1986.

The defender moved to Glasgow with Rangers between 1986 and 1988 before returning to London with Chelsea in August 1988 for a £475,000 fee.

At Chelsea, Roberts made 70 appearances and helped his side win the Second Division championship in the 1988-89 season.

An interesting fact about Roberts' Tottenham stint is that in the FA Cup final of 1981, he lost three teeth while defending for his team, and despite that, he refused to leave the field.

Man Utd player ratings vs Sevilla: Harry Maguire & Tyrell Malacia madness leads to demoralising draw

Manchester United threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Sevilla after Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire committed late howlers

Manchester United could live to regret how they failed to kill off Sevilla and then shot themselves in the foot with two late own goals.

The Red Devils were coasting thanks to two first-half strikes from the deadly Marcel Sabitzer and looked on course for an uplifting win.

Instead, a terrible mistake by Tyrell Malacia led to the Dutch defender scoring an own goal and handing Sevilla a way back. The Spaniards seized the momentum and levelled in injury time with another own goal, this time from Harry Maguire, who unwittingly deflected an errant header into his net.

United now face a daunting trip to the atmospheric Sanchez Pizjuan and it will take a lot of character for them to get through, especially as they will be without the suspended Bruno Fernandes and likely Lisandro Martinez, who left the pitch in tears. Raphael Varane also picked up an injury.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    David de Gea (7/10):

Made an important reflex save from Tanguy Nianzou's header before half-time and made another big save from Suso late on but was let down by his two defenders.

    Aaron Wan-Bissaka (6/10):

Strong in defence but could have offered more in attack.

    Raphael Varane (6/10):

Headed the loose ball off the line after De Gea's save. Was taken off at half-time with a suspected injury.

    Lisandro Martinez (7/10):

Excellent in possession once more and it was his direct floor pass which helped spark the first goal. He left the pitch in agony with a painful-looking injury, carried off by two Sevilla players. It could be a season-changing development for a key defender.

    Tyrell Malacia (3/10):

Struggled throughout. He was nearly badly punished when caught in possession by Lucas Ocampos by the area in the first half and then gifted Sevilla a goal they barely deserved, failing to mop up a loose ball and then sending Jesus Navas' shot into his own net.

    Midfield

    Marcel Sabitzer (9/10):

Took his two goals superbly and played as a centre-forward for chunks of the second half. Doing his best to turn his loan move into a permanent one.

    Casemiro (6/10):

Making his first appearance since March due to his domestic suspension and looked slightly off the pace.

    Bruno Fernandes (6/10):

Was back in a more advanced role due to the return ofCasemiro and set up the opening goal. Will miss the second leg after picking up a harsh yellow card for handball.

  • Getty Images

    Attack

    Antony (7/10):

Worked really hard and cut Sevilla into ribbons on several occasions. Really unlucky not to score when he hit the crossbar in the second half.

    Anthony Martial (8/10):

Impressive in his first start in three months, setting up Sabitzer's second goal and holding the ball up superbly. A shame he was taken off so early.

    Jadon Sancho (5/10):

Had the ball in the net in the first minute but was ruled offside and that was about as good as it got for him. He routinely failed to beat his man and was too slow to release the ball.

    Subs & Manager

    Harry Maguire (4/10):

Was confident in possession at first and got a huge roar from the Old Trafford faithful for dancing past two Sevilla players in midfield. Then things went badly downhill. Was the own goal his fault? Not completely, the ball coming at him unexpectedly from a short distance, but his reflexes perhaps still could have been better.

    Christian Eriksen (6/10):

Misplaced a few passes although was one of the better substitutes.

    Wout Weghorst (4/10):

Got a big cheer for chasing down Sevilla goalkeeper Bono and conceding a goal kick. He did little else.

    Anthony Elanga (5/10):

Offered very little in over half an hour on the pitch. Another big opportunity to prove himself wasted.

    Facundo Pellistri (N/A):

Came on in the 81st minute.

    Erik ten Hag (5/10):

His game plan was working a treat but he must shoulder some of the blame for the late collapse. He also had no substitutions left when Martinez was forced off injured, leaving United with 10 men for around 10 minutes, in which Sevilla levelled.

Everything you need to know about the new Borussia Dortmund kits for 2023-24

Borussia Dortmund and Puma starting to drop their 2023-24 kit and jersey collaborations, as the Bundesliga heavyweights remain embroiled in a gripping title race with their old rivals Bayern Munich. Edin Terzic’s BVB side are close on the heels of the champions and would love to slip into their new fit next season as the kings of the top-flight instead.

PUMA launched the Borussia Dortmund 2023-24 Home kit on May 26, the result of a fan design contest aimed at showing appreciation for the most passionate football fans across the globe.

The German sportswear giant have not let the club and supporters down since taking over kit duties from Kappa in 2012, and if their efforts across the 2022-23 term are anything to go by, fans can expect to see another slate of top-quality options to choose from and celebrate when the new campaign kicks off in just over a few months’ time.

So, what new kits will Borussia Dortmund wear in 2023-24? GOAL takes a look at the jerseys that are set to be sported by Marco Reus, Sebastien Haller and more, while we also give you the lowdown on rumours and leaks alongside details on how to buy them online.

PUMA launched the Borussia Dortmund 2023-24 Home kit on May 26, the result of a fan design contest aimed at showing appreciation for the most passionate football fans across the globe.

Following a fan vote, the club’s iconic two-tone colour scheme has been incorporated by a supporter Timo into a dramatic jersey that effectively bisects the central body across the middle, with a black lower and yellow upper.

Additional detailing across the chest in black has created the visual impression of the silhouette of Signal Iduna Park, the club’s popular home ground, with additional dark decal trim paying tribute to the Ruhr Valley region.

A simple black round-neck collar keeps in line with recent Dortmund strips, with black-capped sleeves marking the edges of one of the most dynamically striking kits the club has enjoyed in recent seasons.

Dortmund have already confirmed their 2023-24 season home kit will be debuted in their final game of the 2022-23 Bundesliga campaign, when they could break Bayern’s monopoly on the top-flight crown.

The price of the kit will likely match this season’s cost, with a replica shirt generally retailing from PUMA for £70.00.

Information on just what Borussia Dortmund and Puma have cooked up for the 2023-24 away kit remain under wraps heading towards next season, but that has not stopped the speculation and rumours over what kind of jersey they could be set to deliver.

Regardless of design, it feels safe to say the club will stick with their common form during the PUMA reign and effectively offer up an inverted change strip that favours a black body with yellow accents at the very least.

The decision to effectively go the half-and-half route for their home jersey could see them opt for something equally split between the two, however, rather than this season’s strikingly glossy number, where the yellow touches were mostly minimal decals.

The price of the kit will likely match that of the home strip, with a replica shirt expected to retail for £70.00 at PUMA.

  • Borussia Dortmund 2023-24 third kit, release date & price

GOAL / PUMAGet it at PUMA

As with the away strip, there is not too much known about the finer points of the 2023-24 third kit Borussia Dortmund will sport this coming season, though it will need to represent something quite non-traditional to outdo the home strip.

Third kits in recent seasons for Dortmund have often featured a white-bodied construction with black and yellow-hued decals in deference to the club’s official colours, though they have sported maroon as another alternative option during their deal with PUMA.

Ultimately, however, actual concrete details on the strip’s design are under lock and key for now, and could yet face a much later release date than the home and away editions.

As with the rest of the club’s wardrobe, not much is known about an exact release date, but you can expect it to match the price of their other strips, retailing at an anticipated £70.00 through PUMA.

Getty Images Get it at PUMA

Much like the away and third-choice kits, details on what the 2023-24 training jerseys will look like for Borussia Dortmund are particularly thin on the ground, though it is likely to take its cues from both their first-choice matchday strips and the club colours again.

This season, BVB employed a funky geometric design in traditional black and yellow, among others, for their warm-up options, but with an already striking home option available for next term, they may well opt for something more simple and unfussy in its design.

There is no release date set for the pre-match jersey, but we can expect to see a end of summer 2023 launch.

Come back, Kylian! Six things we learned as PSG miss Mbappe in friendly loss to Inter

A friendly defeat in Japan hammered home the fact that Luis Enrique needs a reliable goalscorer before the new season begins

The size of Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe problem was made clear in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Inter in Tokyo, with Luis Enrique's toothless team failing to make the most of their dominance without their talismanic forward.

PSG were the better side for 80 minutes, dominating possession for the most part, but only led because of a sensational 30-yard strike from Vitinha that came out of nowhere.

The French champions then collapsed, conceding two quick goals, to Sebastiano Esposito and Stefano Sensi, to leave Luis Enrique in no doubt that a swift resolution to the Mbappe transfer saga required if the new manager is to start the season with a reliable goalscorer.

GOAL looks at what we learned during the clash at the Japan National Stadium…

PSG have the makings of a formidable back four

PSG's defensive deficiencies have been repeatedly exposed in Europe in recent seasons. After all, it doesn't help when you have three forwards unwilling to track back. PSG have also proven desperately vulnerable from a mental perspective, infamously capitulating at the first sign of trouble – and they certainly went to pieces in the closing stages here. But that was only after making changes to what undeniably has the makings pretty formidable back four.

That's thanks in no small part to Inter, of course. Two years after signing Achraf Hakimi from the cash-strapped Nerazzurri, PSG have now picked up Milan Skriniar – only this time for nothing. The Slovakian started alongside Marquinhos here, with Lucas Hernandez at left-back and Hakimi taking up his usual berth on the right flank, and proving a typically tremendous outlet.

Skriniar isn't quite up to speed yet – he was given a bit of bother by Marcus Thuram at one point during the first half – but his lack of match sharpness is hardly surprising given the injury issues which saw him miss the second half of last season. But there's no reason why he shouldn't slot as seamlessly into this side as Hakimi.

Furthermore, if the versatile left-back Hernandez manages to stay fit – and that is a big 'if' admittedly – PSG really will have a defence with no obvious flaws, given Marquinhos and Hakimi are two of the best players in the world in their respective positions.

  • Ugarte already looks right at home

The defence should also be significantly aided by the addition of Manuel Ugarte to the midfield. The Uruguayan's €60 million transfer from Sporting CP may not have generated a massive amount of hype in Paris, but he could prove one of the most important signings PSG have made in years. At the very least, his arrival appears to signify an important – and long overdue – shift in the club's transfer policy, away from superstars and more towards specialists.

Ugarte certainly looked like he will have a huge role to play in the 2023-24 campaign, looking right at home in Luis Enrique's line-up, linking well with Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha. The 22-year-old broke up several Inter attacks while he also used the ball brilliantly, the pick of his passes a lovely lofted the ball into the area for Carlos Soler that ended with Marcos Asensio hitting the post.

It was also no coincidence that Inter suddenly started finding space in between the lines as soon Ugarte was removed from the action. His importance to this side should only grow in the coming weeks and months.

Stankovic's son has a bright future

Inter's need for a proven, top-class goalkeeper is pressing following Andre Onana's summer move to Manchester United, and the expectation is that they'll sign Yann Sommmer and/or Anatoliy Trubin. The latter might not arrive until next year, though, meaning other short-term solutions are being explored.

However, in Filip Stankovic – son of Inter legend Dejan – the club clearly has a goalkeeper of enormous potential on their hands. The 21-year-old appears to have benefited enormously from a couple of seasons on loan at Volendam, whom he helped secure promotion to the Eredivisie.

Stankovic made a number of good saves, while there was absolutely nothing he could have done about Vitinha's goal. Perhaps most importantly of all, though, he also looked very comfortable with the ball at his feet. He's still very young, of course, and might be sent out on loan again this season but, no matter what happens, Stankovic looks like he has a future at San Siro.

    Vitinha stepping up

It's fair to say that Vitinha didn't have the best debut campaign at Parc des Princes. There were constant doubts over whether he was really good enough for a team trying desperately to win the Champions League. Kylian Mbappe certainly didn't appear convinced of Vitinha's qualities, infamously turning his back on the play after being ignored by the Portuguese during one passage of play against Montpellier last August.

However, Vitinha could be set for a more productive second season, with the 23-year-old netting for the second consecutive pre-season game. It was a stunning strike too. Soler picked up a loose ball in midfield and found Vitinha, who beat Stankovic with a thumping drive from distance.

The Florida-based outfit have climbed off the foot of the Eastern Conference, but dropped precious points in their latest outing when being held to a 0-0 draw by Nashville at DRV PNK Stadium. As a result, they remain 10 points adrift of securing tickets to the post-season.

    WHAT THEY SAID

Messi has, however, made a remarkable impact since moving to the United States – with 11 goals recorded through a run of nine wins and a draw – and Martino will not be throwing in the towel on a bid for MLS Cup glory. He said on the back of a stalemate with Nashville: “What we have to do is move on. Anything can happen.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Inter Miami have seven games to take in during a busy September – including a U.S. Open Cup final clash with the Houston Dynamo – and have 10 MLS fixtures in total left on their schedule. A play-off spot is still up for grabs, but Martino was left frustrated against Nashville. He added on posting a rare blank: “Nashville is a team that defends well, and today I think they were a little deeper than in the [Leagues Cup] final. [Our] team had more rhythm in the second half than in the first half; paradoxically the best situations were [Robert] Taylor's two chances in the first half. In the first half, the ball was moving too slowly; in the second I think we did a little better, but it was hard for us. These games usually happen, I understand everyone’s frustration. We too felt it was a good night to continue gaining ground.”

Man Utd are worse than ever under Erik ten Hag – but another managerial change won't fix toxic dressing room culture

The Dutch coach already appears to be on borrowed time, but the Red Devils' most glaring problems are deep-rooted

Manchester United are in crisis – again. Erik ten Hag's side just about managed to avoid humiliation against Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday, but their weaknesses across the pitch were laid bare once again during the 4-3 defeat at Allianz Arena.

The Red Devils have now lost four of their opening six matches in 2023-24, which marks their worst start to a campaign across all competitions in 36 years. They've also conceded three or more goals in three consecutive games for the first time since 1978, and 14 overall – more than any other Premier League side.

Ten Hag's first season at Old Trafford was deemed a success after United followed up winning the Carabao Cup by finishing third in the league, but they have gone backwards since then, despite spending over £200 million ($246m) in the summer transfer window.

It is a continuation of the vicious cycle that no manager has been able to break in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, with temporary waves of optimism quickly giving way to despair and frustration. Ten Hag certainly deserves the same level of criticism that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal and David Moyes received after recent results, but he has also been fighting a losing battle in the dressing room.

  • Getty Images

    'No good culture'

Ten Hag has done his best to stamp his authority on the United squad since arriving at the club, dropping Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho when they failed to meet his high standards.

"It is my job to control the standards," the Dutchman said of his hard-line approach last week. "Strict lines is what the club asked me because there was no good culture before I entered last season. Of course, it is never someone only makes one mistake, it is a whole process before you come to a certain outcome about strict lines. If staff or players or whoever, there is a structure to cross lines so you have to be strong."

The problem is, it no longer appears to be working. Ten Hag's comments came on the back of a public row with Sancho, who has been exiled from the squad for the second time in the past year for his supposed underperformance in training.

The rest of the players failed to react in a positive manner, losing 3-1 at home to a Brighton side that cost a fraction of the malfunctioning one assembled by Ten Hag. That result was no more of a surprise than United's latest defeat at the hands of Bayern.

  • Getty

    Too easy to play against

United did at least go down with a fight against Bayern, but the Bundesliga champions were far from at their best. They scored four goals – and could have added at least one or two more – without ever really getting out of second gear.

Ten Hag's team are simply too easy to play against. The former Ajax boss said as much after a 2-0 loss away at Tottenham on August 19, telling reporters: "They [Spurs] were nowhere, nothing, and then things happened in the game, then they got distracted, not doing their jobs anymore. They didn't run. Or they run in the wrong moment, too late. Especially the front [players] didn't recover."

That lack of running was also one of the main reasons for United's downfall at the Allianz Arena, and indeed against Brighton last weekend. Their defensive discipline has gone out the window.

It's painfully evident that the players are no longer giving their all for Ten Hag. Bad luck with injuries has played a part in United's poor form, but that is no excuse for anyone to be downing tools.

    'Bugs in the dressing room'

There have been regular reports of discontent behind the scenes at Old Trafford in recent years, leading to question marks over whether certain players have been guilty of leaking information to the press. The likes of Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard were accused of being dressing room moles amid Ralf Rangnick's ill-fated spell as interim manager, but the leaks have persisted since their respective departures from the club last year.

Indeed, after United's latest Premier League loss to Brighton, reported that four players were involved in a heated bust-up. It was said that Bruno Fernandes confronted Scott McTominay, while defensive duo Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof pointed the finger of blame at each other over defensive errors.

The club has reportedly denied these claims, but United legend Gary Neville is worried that the situation will only get worse. He appeared to suggest that Ten Hag might have inadvertently brought it on himself, too, with his handling of Sancho and Maguire – who was stripped of his captaincy duties in July.

"How popular are Sancho and Maguire in the dressing room?" Neville said in his latest podcast for . "He's got some bugs in there that we don't know from the outside, what discomfort and uncertainty is being created on the inside.

"You've got a player at the moment who is probably changing in the first-team dressing room but obviously over with the academy. You've got Maguire, who has been captain of these players 12 months ago, now almost alienated as third, fourth, fifth centre-half. He's got some situations in there I don't know the damage that's having.

"I don't think Ten Hag will change. What I'm hoping at the moment is it's just a difficult start to the season and it's not a repeat of what we've seen previously. We've seen it becoming challenging for Jose Mourinho, for Louis van Gaal, for David Moyes, for obviously Ralf Rangnick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. So I hope it is not the beginning of that."

    'Disease of modern football'

There are plenty of parallels to be drawn between the start of Ten Hag's second season at United and Solskjaer's last, which saw him lose his job after just 12 games. The Norwegian seemed to be heading in the right direction after a runners'-up finish in the Premier League and a Europa League final appearance in 2021-22, which he followed up by signing Sancho, Raphael Varane and Ronaldo.

But collective performances then took a major nosedive, and the board were forced into action after a shocking 4-1 loss against Watford. If Ten Hag is not careful, he could share a similar fate to Solskjaer, who has spoken out on the weak mentality of the squad.

"Some weren't as good as their own perception of themselves," the former United boss said in an explosive interview with . "When you have a group you need everyone to pull in the same direction. When things didn't go right, you could see certain players and egos came out."

Solskjaer added: "Some players felt they should’ve played more and weren’t constructive to the environment. That’s a huge sin for me. When I didn’t start games I wanted to prove to the manager he’d made the wrong decision. Now, a lot of players aren’t like that. Agents and family members get into their heads and tell them they’re better than they are because they have a vested interest. It’s a disease of modern football."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

He was forced to stay behind when the rest of Phil Parkinson’s side headed home, and it was during that extended break in the U.S. that he was chased by the paparazzi. Mullin has told Kammy & Ben’s Proper Football Podcast: “When I stayed behind with my two friends. After about 10 days or so I felt alright to walk around and we went out for some dinner. We went to a bar next door and I didn’t know at the time that it was quite a hotspot.

"As I’m walking in, I’ve turned round the corner and there are flashes going off in my face! The first picture will be a picture! I don’t even know where they are. I was like ‘what are you doing?’ I couldn’t believe it. I sort of cottoned on and started laughing and smiling, and my mates were saying ‘who do you think you are?’ I said they were taking photos of them as carers! Leaving was exactly the same and they ended up running after me down the street asking me questions. I don’t know if they thought I was going to be getting into a Lamborghini or something, but it was a Chrysler that we’d rented for a couple of hundred quid!”

  • WHAT THEY SAID

As stars of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary, Mullin and Co had been warned by club co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney to expect special treatment in the States. They got plenty of that, with Mullin adding on becoming a household name a long way from home: “It’s been very strange. Going there for the whole time, the first season of the documentary was out and the owners were telling us ‘you don’t know how well received you’re going to be’.

"The first night we got there we went for a walk around North Carolina, literally as we stepped out of the taxi a car is driving down the road, the window goes down and it’s ‘hey, it’s Paul Mullin!’ I thought they might be right here! Against Chelsea the fans were cheering, and the Man Utd game was the same. It was quite surreal, but now we know that when we go out there it’s going to be a bit of chaos but something you can enjoy.”

    WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Wrexham’s squad had already spent time in the States before facing the likes of Chelsea and United, with Reynolds and McElhenney funding an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas on the back of the club’s record-breaking promotion into the Football League. Mullin, who hit 47 goals last season, said of that experience: “It was phenomenal. It was treatment you wouldn’t normally receive – it was fit for a movie star. It was a shame Ryan wasn’t there! They really looked after us and it was something that I’ll remember for life. I don’t know if a few remember too much of it, but it was a great time and it was worth every penny that they spent on it.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

De Zerbi has risen to prominence thanks to his work at Sassuolo, Shakhtar and Brighton. He replaced Graham Potter at the helm of Brighton in 2022 and guided the club to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League in his first season and they currently sit eighth in the table. Guardiola, meanwhile, has taken City back to the top of the English top-flight after leading them to the European and domestic treble last term.

  • WHAT KEVIN-PRINCE BOATENG SAID

Boateng told : "If I had De Zerbi 10-12 years ago, football would’ve been different. I think he will be the best coach of the next 20-30 years. He has been able to improve every single player he worked with, from the understudy goalkeeper to the striker. I worked with him when I was 32 years old and I felt stronger than I’ve ever been. De Zerbi makes you feel really involved, he knew how to coddle me when I needed it, to motivate me when I needed that. He really looks after the human rapport aspect of management and that is fundamental."

He added: "Is De Zerbi better than Guardiola? I say yes."

De Zerbi's Brighton team have not won any of their last five matches in the Premier League and they will hope to turn that form around when they visit Nottingham Forest on November 25. They will then take on AEK Athens in the Europa League with the aim of securing their place in the knockout rounds of the competition.
