Everton’s Richarlison & Gordon slammed

Journalist Jordan Cronin has slammed both Richarlison and Anthony Gordon for their antics as Everton lost 2-0 away to Liverpool on Sunday.

The Lowdown: Everton tactics

Frank Lampard clearly set up his team to frustrate the hosts at Anfield, as they committed eight fouls in total and picked up five yellow cards (SofaScore).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

One of those was for Gordon, who was booked for simulation in the first half, while Richarlison was also cautioned late on after a nasty tackle on Jordan Henderson, amid the Brazilian being accused of play acting and deliberately time wasting throughout the game.

The Latest: Cronin reacts

Taking to Twitter, Cronin slammed Richarlison and Gordon for their antics on the pitch, saying:

“There’s trying to frustrate Liverpool and then there’s Everton. Embarrassing at times, especially Richarlison and Gordon.”

The Verdict: Nothing to show

Ultimately, the tactics employed by Everton did not pay off, as Jurgen Klopp’s team won 2-0 in the end.

Richarlison and Gordon did show some bright sparks in the match, as they won a combined 13 duels between them and also recorded four successful dribbles and two key passes in total (SofaScore).

However, they were guilty of giving the ball away no fewer than 33 times combined, and ultimately they could not make the most of their strides toward Alisson’s net.

Nonetheless, the Toffees will want to put this result behind them now and focus on Chelsea at Goodison Park next weekend as they aim to climb out of the relegation zone.

Lampard could leave Everton this summer

Everton are struggling for survival in the Premier League this season and following another defeat last weekend, Frank Lampard’s side has fallen into the relegation zone and now his future is coming into question.

What’s the latest?

Journalist Paul Brown has dropped a huge claim on the Toffees boss surrounding his future at Goodison Park depending on the outcome of the current season.

Brown told GIVEMESPORT:

“It feels like Lampard can’t be there next season because he’s failed to do his job, that’s definitely a possibility, although the only way I see a new manager coming to Everton is if they go down and the owner goes, ‘you failed, off you go, on your bike’.”

Supporters will be worried

The thought of falling into the Championship for the first time since the Premier League began back 30 years ago is already a worrying prospect enough for supporters, without the thought of losing players and the manager in the process.

The inconsistency and constant upheaval at Goodison Park since Farhad Moshiri arrived at the club six years ago has ultimately put them in the position that they have now found themselves, and sacking the sixth permanent manager appointed in six years is not necessarily in the best interests of the club.

Not only is the speculation surrounding the manager a concern, but the future of key players also hangs in the balance with both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison linked with moves away from Everton this summer which will only further impact the team if they do leave so minimising disruption is essential.

The Toffees boss has managed 15 games for the club losing nine, winning five and drawing one so far, and although this run of results isn’t making a big enough impact to secure safety for the side at this point, there is still opportunity in the next six games which a one-game advantage on their relegation rivals around them.

Ultimately, if Lampard does make the great escape from relegation this season it would be a fantastic achievement considering the inconsistency in performances this season but Everton need to get to the end of the season before they make any reckless decisions on the future of people at the club.

Southampton in Carter-Vickers transfer race

Southampton are reportedly among several Premier League clubs who are interested in signing Cameron Carter-Vickers this summer, according to journalist Matt O’Connor-Simpson.

The Lowdown: Carter-Vickers profiled

The 24-year-old Tottenham defender has spent the 2021/22 season on loan in the Scottish Premiership with Celtic, where he has made 41 appearances in all competitions, registering four goals and one assist during that time, via Transfermarkt.

The centre-back is set to return to north London at the end of the campaign, where he has just one year remaining on his current contract, but following a fresh update, it would seem that his parent club would be happy to let him leave for good in the upcoming transfer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/southampton-newest-updates/” title=”Southampton newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Southampton join Carter-Vickers transfer race

The reporter took to Twitter to confirm that Carter-Vickers is attracting ‘plenty of interest’, with the Saints being the latest club to ‘join the race’ for his signature alongside newly-promoted Fulham, but the likes of Crystal Palace, West Ham, and Wolves are also thought to be keeping tabs on the situation.

Expanding in his 90min article, O’Connor-Simpson claimed that Spurs ‘do not have plans’ to involve the £2.7m-rated colossus in their first-team squad and are ‘open’ to selling him in the months ahead.

The source also claimed that the Hoops are keen to turn his loan move into a permanent one, but they understand that the opportunity of playing Premier League football might be too much for the player to turn down.

The Verdict: He could be tempted

The American is no doubt enjoying his time under Ange Postecoglou, where he is earning plenty of game-time and still very much on track to secure a Premiership and Scottish League Cup double.

Celtic captain Callum McGregor has dubbed his fellow team-mate a “big player”, with such effusive praise highlighting how Carter-Vickers has come to the fore for the Glasgow giants throughout the season.

However, if the Spurs academy graduate wants to achieve his long-term ambitions of playing at the highest level, then having the chance to make the move back to the English top flight would surely be a temptation that he couldn’t resist.

That is something Southampton must try and utilise to their advantage in their attempts to lure the 24-year-old to St Mary’s.

Derby County news: Sky Sports reporter drops takeover update

Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett has revealed the latest roadblock for Derby County regarding the potential new takeover of the club.

The Lowdown: Relegation confirmed

The Rams officially entered administration back in September 2021, amid ongoing financial problems at the club, when they received a 12-point deduction from the English Football League.

Despite a valiant effort to remain in the Championship after two point deductions, their relegation to League One has been confirmed following a 1-0 defeat at the hands of QPR two weeks ago.

American businessman Chris Kirchner was last month named as the preferred bidder for Derby, which gave everyone associated with the club hope that a deal was near to being completed, but following a fresh update, it would now appear that a setback in the takeover process has occurred.

The Latest: Morris causing stadium roadblock

Revealing the news in a post on Twitter, Dorsett claimed: “I’ve been told most areas addressed, but key work still to do for #dcfc and Kirchner, who is reluctant to proceed if can’t get deal with Mel Morris to buy stadium. Leasing an option, but CK adamant he wants to buy stadium, for much greater security.”

The Verdict: Hoping to bounce back

Wayne Rooney’s side will be in action for their final game in the second-tier of English football when they take on Cardiff City at Pride Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Rams will be hoping to end the season on a high and secure victory against the Bluebirds to give their prospective new owner, Kirchner, who will no doubt be watching on, a positive outlook as to what the future could be like for Derby.

With that comes plenty of hope that there will be a lot more stability surrounding the club next season, where the Midlands outfit will be fighting to bounce back up at the first time of asking.

Ornstein drops Man City claim on Sterling

Manchester City are on the verge of potentially securing their fourth Premier League title in five years if they manage to win their two remaining fixtures this season.

With 36 matches played, the Citizens have won 28, drawn five and lost three, scoring 94 goals and conceding only 22 along the way.

Looking beyond the end of the current campaign, it seems as though the summer could be an important period behind the scenes for the future of one prominent City figure in particular.

What’s the news?

According to a recent tweet from journalist David Ornstein, sharing a corresponding report from The Athletic, Raheem Sterling will discuss his future at the Etihad Stadium in June after England’s UEFA Nations League matches.

Ornstein added that a new deal for the winger is possible, but only if he will be central to City’s plans for the future. He signed off by saying that if the England winger does end up leaving the Etihad, he expects to join one of Europe’s most decorated clubs and not Arsenal or Tottenham Hotspur.

Pep could be sweating

City signed Sterling back in 2015 from fellow Premier League side Liverpool in a deal worth a reported £49m.

Since then, the attacker – whose current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2023 – has gone on to make 338 appearances for the Citizens across all competitions. In that time, he has scored 131 goals, provided 94 assists and won numerous domestic trophies along the way.

With 29 league games under his belt in the current campaign, the 27-year-old has found the net 13 times and delivered five assists in the process, leaving only Kevin De Bruyne with more goal contributions in City’s squad.

Taking all this into account, and with Guardiola sharing his admiration for the winger and what he has done at the club, it’s safe to say that the Englishman has been an important figure for the Cityzens during their period of domestic dominance.

In terms of what Ornstein had to say on Sterling’s future, this could have the City manager sweating over the possibility of seeing the 27-year-old leave the club.

The hierarchy at Man City should be doing everything they can to convince the former Liverpool star to pledge his future to the Manchester club and continue to help them being successful, adding more goals and assists to his tally.

Southampton transfer news on Strakosha

According to Corriere dello Sport (via SaintsExtra), Southampton and Fulham are both interested in signing Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha upon the expiry of his contract this summer.

The Lowdown: Saints’ keeper situation

According to a fresh report by The Athletic, Saints will inform Fraser Forster that his deal with the south coast outfit will not be extended, meaning he will leave the club at the end of the season.

The Athletic claim that they are looking to bring in a younger replacement, with Forster being 34 years old.

This would be in addition to the England international’s rival to the No. 1 shirt, Alex McCarthy, who penned a new three-year deal in 2021.

The Latest: Saints interested in Strakosha

Taking to Twitter, SaintsExtra shared Corriere dello Sport’s news that Southampton are interested in signing Lazio’s Strakosha and the player wants to move to England.

“Southampton & Fulham are both expressing an interest in 27-year-old Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha – the Albanian is due to become a free agent in July, & has his sights set on the Premier League.”

The Verdict: Good signing

Former Lazio youth coach Alberto Bollini has been speaking very highly of Strakosha, claiming that he rates the 6 foot 4 colossus as a “10/10”, because “he has extraordinary athleticism”.

Southampton’s recruitment clearly agrees with these statements, as they were linked with signing the 27-year-old last summer, too. However, at that point in time, the Albanian was valued around £25m.

Therefore, if the Saints are able to sign a player they were eyeing around that price on a free this summer, this will turn out to be a great piece of business by the club.

Man United-linked Cody Gakpo issues update

Manchester United target Cody Gakpo has issued an update on his future, with speculation continuing to mount around the PSV Eindhoven youngster.

What’s the word?

As per a report from De Telegraaf, via Manchester Evening News, the 23-year-old said: “Anything can happen this summer. I will now calmly compare all the options and see what is best for me.

“Staying another year is also an option. It would be a shame if I went somewhere where I wouldn’t get a job at all and I could miss the World Cup. I’ll keep that in mind.”

Rashford out, Gakpo in

With Ten Hag already igniting the rebuild at Old Trafford, having commenced his role last week, he will already be looking at signings who can bolster the Red Devils’ squad; and having just moved from the Eredivisie, he will know the likes of Gakpo well.

Operating in a PSV side which pushed Ajax all the way in the Dutch title race, the 23-year-old “wizard” had an tremendous campaign for Roger Schmidt’s side, registering 12 goals and 13 assists in 27 appearances.

That is an astonishing return, and Gakpo has now had three solid campaigns in a row, bagging seven league goals in each of the two seasons prior to 2021/22.

His latest development has seen him flourish as a potent goalscorer from out wide, with his links to United bound to spell bad news for Marcus Rashford, who could leave Old Trafford this summer and has been labelled a “liability” in the past by Samuel Luckhurst.

If that is the case, a move for Gakpo could actually prove to be an upgrade for United, with the Netherlands international registering much better offensive numbers and offering the same amount of versatility as the £180k-per-week Englishman.

This season, the Dutchman has created 71 chances, with 11 of those classified as big chances, and an average of 3.8 shots per 90. Rashford – who has managed just four goals and two assists in 25 Premier League appearances – has created a mere nine chances, with three of those classified as big chances, and an average of 1.6 shots  per game.

His numbers in comparison to Gakpo this season are chalk and cheese, and with the potential of signing the PSV star for between £30m and £40m, the potential sale of Rashford to facilitate a move for the Dutch youngster could also prove to be the best decision in a financial sense for United.

India's batting and selection in focus against upbeat England

The caravan moves to the Oval with intrigue surrounding both teams

Alan Gardner01-Sep-20214:21

VVS Laxman on how India batters can succeed in the Oval Test

Big picture

That Headingley juju, eh? England could try to bottle it, though they can barely control it themselves. But there’s no doubting some Yorkshire magic rubbed off on Joe Root’s team during the third Test, and just in the nick of time. A dismal run of six home Tests without a victory – for precedent, you had to go all the way back to the dark ages (or 1989-90, to be specific) – came to an end in spectacular style. Now the question is whether it will be a turning point for the series or an isolated blip on the readout. The Leeds Test itself began with a significant anomaly: Virat Kohli winning the toss. Whether his call to bat was objectively any worse than Root’s decision to bowl at Lord’s (where India ended the first day on 276 for 3, remember) is academic, but India will quickly have to face up to the repercussions of 78 all out – much as they did after being blown away for 36 in Adelaide last year. Never mind that India have by and large had the edge on England in the series so far, can they push past the doubts that will now begin to crowd in. Can they ignore the whispers about how their previous two tours of England began competitively only to end in one-sided scorelines?Related

  • Does Vihari get in? And what about Ashwin?

  • Making sense of Kohli's lean patch

  • Joe Root back at No. 1 in ICC Test rankings

  • Prasidh Krishna added to India's squad

The advantage of such a hammering, perhaps, is that it can quickly be consigned to history. Root’s magnificence aside, India have two of the leading run-scorers in the series in openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, while a second-innings 91 at Headingley by Cheteshwar Pujara – albeit that it benefited from some charitable donations by England – puts him fourth. And despite Kohli’s apparent struggles, the data suggests his form is as much down to bad luck as a lack of control. When the tide turns, a deluge may follow. If India do make changes, it will likely reflect the flatter conditions expected at The Oval, as well as the usual wear and tear of a five-Test series. It is a mark of their great strength in depth that R Ashwin remains on the fringes of selection, despite being ranked the ICC’s No. 2 Test bowler in the world.1:56

Bharat Arun: ‘Unfortunate’ that Ashwin, ‘one of the best bowlers we have’, hasn’t played yet

England, nevertheless, will return south rejuvenated. After a summer in which the fates have taken a hammer to much of their careful planning around the Test side, Root and Chris Silverwood were offered a glimpse of something rising from the wreckage. James Anderson may have provided the initial spark, but thereafter it was the nagging lines and high-armed angles provided Ollie Robinson and Craig Overton that beat out a victory tattoo. England’s newly formed opening partnership put on a rare century stand, before Dawid Malan hinted at a fruitful second coming at No. 3.Although they will be without Jos Buttler, with his wife due to give birth, the return of Chris Woakes – so effective in these conditions and England’s player of the summer in 2020 – should give Root another reason to be cheerful. The Oval is often the scene of sunsets and farewells, but with the series set to conclude Manchester the week after, both teams go into this match knowing not to look too far ahead.

Players to watch

Where to begin with the Jonny Bairstow story? Let’s stick to recent history. Restored to the Test side in January, for the first time in more than a year, Bairstow impressed as a specialist batter without making a defining score in Sri Lanka, then ended the India tour with three ducks in four innings (having flown home for some pre-agreed rest in between). But England haven’t had enough good alternatives to definitively move on, and now, another twist has given him the gloves once again. His career average while keeping is still significantly higher (37.85 compared to 27.41) and, with Buttler’s Test future uncertain, there’s no doubt Bairstow will be aiming to prove England have done the right thing in going back to an old flame.Jonny Bairstow combines sports at England training•Getty Images

It feels like the spotlight rarely leaves Rishabh Pant. Either he is carving out history at the Gabba, or reverse-ramping Anderson over the slip cordon in Ahmedabad, or he is being questioned for his keeping (less of that these days) and shot selection. His displays against England in India earlier in the year helped the home side turn the screw ruthlessly, but an average of 17.40 in the current series (rising to 18.85 if you include the World Test Championship final) tells of his struggle in English conditions; in particular, the height and control of Robinson has caused him problems, with Pant falling to the rookie four times out of five so far. It was at The Oval in 2018 that the 20-year-old Pant announced himself, with the first hundred in England by an India wicketkeeper. A return to form on the same ground would be timely.

Team news

England will have to change a winning team, after Buttler was omitted from the squad due to the impending arrival of his second child – Bairstow will retake the gloves for the first time since the 2019 Ashes and Ollie Pope (who averages 100.71 in first-class cricket at The Oval) looks favourite to come into the middle order ahead of Dan Lawrence. Chris Woakes is also set for a first Test appearance since August 2020, most likely as a direct replacement for Sam Curran in the allrounder spot.England (probable): 1 Rory Burns, 2 Haseeb Hameed, 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Joe Root (capt), 5 Ollie Pope, 6 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Craig Overton, 10 Ollie Robinson, 11 James AndersonIndia have plenty of selection posers to consider after defeat at Headingley. Kohli is keen to trust the “template” of four quicks but The Oval is perhaps the ideal ground in England on which to go with their strength and deploy two spinners, Ashwin having already turned out there once this summer for Surrey. Bharat Arun, the bowling coach, said that Ravindra Jadeja was fit despite going for a scan in Leeds, but it might be a case of either/or once again, with Shardul Thakur in contention to stiffen the batting as a fourth seamer. Ishant Sharma’s fitness was being monitored at training and he seems most likely to miss out, with Prasidh Krishna officially added to the squad as cover. Umesh Yadav could also come into contention in an effort to manage workloads.India (probable): 1 KL Rahul, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli (capt), 5 Ajinkya Rahane, 6 Rishabh Pant (wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja/R Ashwin, 8 Shardul Thakur/Ishant Sharma, 9 Mohammed Shami/Umesh Yadav, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Mohammed Siraj

Pitch and conditions

Never mind the urban jungle, Kennington is usually a hospitable environment for batting’s big beasts. The last time England and India played at the ground, in 2018, Alastair Cook signed off from Test cricket with a crowd-pleasing 147, while there were also hundreds for Root, Rahul and Pant. But spin could also play a significant part, as evidenced by Surrey’s last Championship game at The Oval, back in July: Somerset, the visitors, made 429 in the first innings before being bowled out for 69 second time around, Ashwin taking 6 for 27 in a one-off county appearance. The forecast is clear for all five days, with temperatures rising over the weekend.

Stats

  • Root has moved back to No. 1 in the ICC batting rankings for the first time since 2015. With 1398 runs in 2021 so far, he needs 84 to pass Michael Vaughan’s England record for Test runs in a calendar year.
  • Moeen Ali, named England’s vice-captain in Buttler’s absence, needs one wicket to go past Jim Laker and seven to become only the second English spinner to 200 in Tests.
  • If he plays, Ashwin can close in on Harbhajan Singh as India’s third-highest wicket-taker – with 413, he is four wickets behind.
  • India have not won at The Oval since their maiden Test victory in England, back in 1971. Since then, they have drawn five and lost three in south London.

Quotes

“Now is when the hard work really starts. We’ve got to look to go even further, dig a little deeper, and really start almost to go through the gears as the series goes on.”
“It depends on the conditions, on the wicket. Ashwin no doubt is probably one of the best bowlers we have, it’s unfortunate he hasn’t played so far. But if there is an opportunity and we feel he is going to fit into the scheme of things, they will definitely be bowling in tandem.”

Sourav Ganguly wants postponed Old Trafford Test to be fifth Test of series

The BCCI president had earlier been quoted saying he wanted the match to be a standalone event

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Sep-2021The replacement match for the now-cancelled Manchester Test should be continuation of the five-match England-India Test series and not a one-off Test, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has clarified. India could not field a team in the series-decider because of a Covid-19 outbreak among the support staff of the team following which the fate of the series, which India lead 2-1, hangs in the balance.Related

“We want the series to be completed as this will be our first series win [in England] since 2007,” Ganguly told PTI. “The BCCI maintains that Test cricket is the ultimate format, and we won’t compromise it for anything.”We are ready to play extra ODI and T20Is and that’s not an issue. Just that the Test match that will be played later will be the fifth match of the series.”Ganguly had been quoted by Kolkata-based earlier in the day saying that the replacement Test should be a one-off.How the ICC views this Test – forfeited, abandoned or rescheduled – will have implications not just for the series result but also the ECB’s insurance cover. If it is considered abandoned because of the Covid-19 outbreak, it falls under “acceptable non-compliance” and ends the series 2-1 in India’s favour. It also means that ECB can’t claim its insurance cover in full because it doesn’t cover for Covid-19.However, ECB has made it a point to emphasise in its communications that none of the India players had tested positive, and that the match was called off keeping in mind the “mental health” of the players. In the meantime, it has emerged that the BCCI has offered to play a replacement Test when India travel to the UK for limited-overs internationals next year, but the status of such a match remains unclear. Ganguly has now clarified that India want it to be a continuation of this series. He will be in England later this month, and is expected to continue talks with the ECB.

Robin Uthappa: 'Was wondering how to help as I was doubting myself'

Batter says he had previously felt more secure only under Gambhir’s leadership at Kolkata Knight Riders

Gambhir: ‘Credit to Dhoni for persisting with Uthappa’

Batter Robin Uthappa said Chennai Super Kings’ culture of “making sure all players within the group felt secure” helped him retain his belief after not playing for the majority of the 2021 IPL season. Uthappa contributed with 63 off 44 balls in the first qualifier against Delhi Capitals on Sunday to set a strong foundation for Super Kings’ chase of 173.”The culture in the group is that everyone will get an opportunity,” Uthappa told Star Sports Tamil after the game. “I started the first game well, but didn’t kick on from there. After that I got out playing shots that I’d have backed myself to play positively. I knew I had to be positive and express myself.”I was sitting out for 10 matches and was wondering how to help. It was eating away at me and I had self-doubts. I was trying to help by doing whatever I can, like bringing them water, but to get an opportunity to actually go out to the middle and add value, it’s something I’m grateful for.”

Apart from Super Kings, Uthappa said he had previously felt more secure in an IPL team only under Gautam Gambhir’s leadership at Kolkata Knight Riders.”At KKR I had a similar experience under Gautam,” he said. “He’d make sure all players within the group felt secure. So the players always felt like giving back to the franchise. After that, this is the first time I’m experiencing that kind of security. You’re thinking of helping and giving back to the team.”After losing Faf du Plessis in the first over, Uthappa and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who passed 600 runs this season on Sunday, put on a 110-run partnership for the second wicket in just 77 balls. Uthappa also celebrated his fifty with a unique sign, a gesture that indicated “the love within the group”.Robin Uthappa on his celebration: “The three finger sign is the love within the group”•BCCI

“We just wanted to rotate the strike and build the partnership,” Uthappa said. “First six overs, we didn’t want to lose a wicket. Seventh onwards we decided it didn’t matter even if we were getting only 6-7 an over, let’s take the game deep.”I’ve always had the energy, despite my size. I run well between the wickets. We’d always decided that one side in this ground is bigger than the other, so we targeted the boundaries against the spinners accordingly. When we’re batting to the bigger side, we targeted the boundaries straight. We just didn’t want to lose wickets.”Uthappa also said that though “many had written Dhoni off”, he is the best at what he does. “It’s very heartening to see from the outside,” he said. “Many had written him off, but when the situation arises, he met the challenge. He’s the best at this. All of us in the dressing room wanted him to go out and do it.”Mahi had said we have the best fans, and I agree.
