Leeds fans react to Phil Hay’s update on Kalvin Phillips’ future

[ad_pod ]

According to journalist Phil Hay, who has just left his role with The Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United have opened contract talks with Kalvin Phillips.

The 23-year-old came through the youth system at Elland Road and has made 141 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The midfielder enjoyed a strong 2018-19 campaign for the Whites – scoring once and providing three assists in 46 appearances in all competitions.

Aston Villa have been linked with a swoop for the Englishman this summer as Dean Smith’s side prepare for life in the Premier League.

However, according to Hay, Leeds have opened contact talks with Phillips over a deal which would place him among the high earners at the club.

As expected, a number of Leeds supporters have been on social media offering their views on the update from the well-placed journalist and many are absolutely delighted with the latest update on the ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’.

Max Meyer comment doesn’t bode well for Crystal Palace’s lack of transfer business

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace midfielder Max Meyer has suggested in a feature interview with the official club website that he struggled at the start of last season because of a lack of a pre-season, which hardly bodes well for the Eagles this year.

What did he say, then?

Well, speaking to cpfc.co.uk a year after moving to Selhurst Park, the German said: “The problem was that I came just one week before the first game – so I had no pre-season with the team. I needed to learn the other players, so the first six-eight games I didn’t play in the Premier League.

“But after that I had several games when I started, in the league and in the cups too. I played a lot at the end – and it was ok.”

While the 23-year-old made 29 top flight outings in his debut campaign in England, 14 of those were still from the substitutes’ bench.

Repeating mistakes?

It isn’t surprising that a new signing will suffer without a full pre-season at the club they are going to represent, given it is the perfect chance to have some time to get to really know your manager’s ideas and how to work well on the pitch with their new teammates.

In the video below, find out which Chelsea academy prospect is reportedly being lined up to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka at Crystal Palace…

The south London outfit have had plenty of time to bring new signings to the club this summer, but as of yet goalkeeper Stephen Henderson has been the only one to arrive, and he was on a free.

They should have money in the bank given they pocketed an initial £45m when they sold Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Manchester United, but there have been no major signings even if they have been linked with plenty of players.

Given the transfer window shuts in one month and that they suffered eight defeats in their opening 12 Premier League fixtures last season, they probably could have done with getting their business done early this summer to ensure they were ready to hit the ground running in 2019/20.

While they still have an opportunity to avoid another situation like the Meyer one, there is no doubt that they are still running out of time – especially if players who don’t know the Premier League join within a couple of weeks of the season getting underway.

That is something that could be on the cards considering the links to the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin, Timothy Castagne and Mbaye Diagne – none of whom have plied their trade in England before.

West Ham stats comparison: Sebastien Haller vs Marko Arnautovic

[ad_pod ]

Stop the presses, West Ham United have finally signed a bona fide, out-and-out centre-forward; a player capable of not only leading the line but actually finishing off chances too.

With Sebastien Haller’s £45m transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt now completed the Hammers possess a genuine and reliable threat up front and very possibly the solution to a long-standing problem area that has been their undoing in recent seasons.

Despite the fine football orchestrated by Manuel Pellegrini last term the Chilean saw his slim roster of strikers misfire more times than not with the side’s leading goal-scorer Marko Arnautovic ultimately finishing with an underwhelming ten. This lack of prolificacy goes right back to the start of the century: the last occasion a West Ham player scored 15 or more league goals was Paolo Di Canio in 1999/00.

Acting as the focal point for an entertaining Eintracht side Haller managed to comfortably reach that target last season in the Bundesliga and so beneficial would his goals be should he continue in that vein. There is already talk of the 25-year-old proving the difference and elevating the Hammers towards top six contention.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. First it’s incumbent to lay out exactly who West Ham’s record signing is and, just as pertinently, how he compares to their recently departed star man Arnautovic.

Beginning with the enigmatic Austrian it should be stated in his defence that his palette of skills does not naturally lend itself to playing a centre-forward role in the traditional sense. Rather, Arnautovic thrives when he is a roaming creator-in-chief and ironically he would have presumably thrived considerably more had he been partnered alongside Haller prior to his £23m switch to the Chinese Super League. With this in mind his 21 goals in 59 Premier League appearances is deserving of praise.

But it’s long been felt that should the Hammers somehow combine the enterprise of Arnautovic and the poaching instincts of Javier Hernandez they would have the perfect front-man and the exciting news for the fans is that with Haller they might just have that blend.

It is not just his 15 goals last season that impress: his 9 assists stand out too; more than double the amount his predecessor at the London Stadium managed. Haller even trumps Arnautovic in the dribbling stakes, but it’s the former French Under 21 international’s aerial prowess that truly jumps from the stats. It’s an attribute just as useful in the defending of set-pieces and the Hammers will be all the stronger for it.

Most encouragingly of all, when all of these figures are combined it amounts to Sebastien Haller being the fifth most effective player in the Bundesliga throughout 2018/19 as per Whoscored. He is a man of substantial quality hitting his peak.

Arnautovic was a hero to the hammers in his two years in East London. It surely won’t be long though before the cry goes up – Marko who?

Leeds United’s transfer business hints Marcelo Bielsa has performed U-turn

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa looks to have performed a big U-turn on his comments from April following director of football Victor Orta’s latest transfer update.

Speaking to the press in Australia during the Yorkshire outfit’s tour down under, Orta said that the Whites; squad is getting close to completion with less than a fortnight until the new Championship season gets underway.

The Spaniard said, via Leeds Live: “We always are open in the market, but now we are 90 per cent (complete).

“90 per cent is close. Obviously it’s football. In life, all that I know is I am going to die. The rest, I am not sure.”

This suggests that the club’s summer business is close to completion, but also that Bielsa has gone back on what he said following the defeat against Wigan Athletic earlier in 2019.

After that loss against the Latics at Elland Road – that ultimately left United with too much to do in their bid to secure an automatic promotion spot – the Argentine manager was under no illusions as to what it meant at the time, and for the upcoming campaign if they failed to go up through the play-offs.

He said, via The Yorkshire Evening Post: “Remember what I say now because you’ll be able to verify it. You won’t find a single player in our team who would be able to reproduce the same level of performance in another season because we’ve been very demanding with them.

“They’ve given everything and they have figures I’m checking all the time which show what I’m saying is true. The players won’t be able to reproduce the levels they have shown in another season.”

Those words and Leeds’ play-off failure against Derby County hinted that big squad changes were on the cards, but instead it looks as though it is largely going to be the same players involved again in 2019/20.

Watch fans explain why the Football League is better than the Premier League in the video below…

Pontus Jansson may have been replaced by Ben White and Helder Costa may have arrived from Wolves, but those are the only two fresh faces with Jack Clarke returning to Elland Road following his permanent move to Tottenham Hotspur, and Jack Harrison also coming back for a second loan spell from Manchester City.

With Orta saying the squad is 90% complete, it would suggest that there might only be a couple of other new faces arriving before the window slams shut in two-and-a-half weeks’ time.

Bielsa may well be going into the season with a similar set of players then, and he will be hoping that he eats his words and that they can do better than they did last term, otherwise they will be spending yet another year at this level.

Arsenal: Konstantinos Mavropanos determined to prove his worth in North London

Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos is determined to stay at Arsenal next season and prove his worth, according to SDNA (via Sport Witness).

Mavropanos was linked with a loan move to Greek rivals AEK Athens and Panathinaikos, however, has reportedly rejected both offers.

The Greek youngster is said to want to wait for his opportunity to impress Unai Emery next season, after also rejecting moves to the Bundesliga and Eredivisie.

According to SDNA, Panathinaikos sporting director Nikos Dabizas wanted to make Mavropanos the ‘leader’ of their defence.

The links for a move away for the 21-year-old would seem credible, after enduring a frustrating campaign last season with injuries limiting the youngster to just six appearances in all competitions.

The opportunity of a loan move could do the youngster the world of good, especially with Calum Chambers and Rob Holding returning from Fulham and injury respectively.

The Gunners also made a centre-back signing this summer, as William Saliba joined from French side AS Saint-Étienne. This could further limit Mavropanos’ appearances in the 2020/2021 season if he doesn’t go out on loan next season and prove his worth to the club.

Mavropanos is in between a rock and a hard place. He may well have the ability to play for Arsenal as his confidence to stay at the club next season suggests. However, the fact of the matter is his lack of appearances have seen him fall down the pecking order.

Next season, it won’t be too ludicrous to suggest that Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Holding, when he returns from injury, and Chambers will all be ahead of him in the pecking order. So a loan move is needed for him, especially with Saliba coming for the 2020/2021 season.

Mavropanos needs to go out and show Arsenal he’s good enough to start. Otherwise, he’ll spend next season sat on the bench rather than playing regularly. And when Saliba returns following a full season of starts at AS Saint-Étienne, barring injury, he’s also likely to be ahead of him in the pecking order.

Arsenal fans, does Mavropanos need a loan move? Let us know what you think in the comment section below!

Leeds director of football Victor Orta could come up trumps in Eddie Nketiah pursuit

[ad_pod ]This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…According to BBC Sport journalist David Ornstein on Twitter, Leeds United director of football Victor Orta is hopeful that his relationship with Arsenal manager Unai Emery and the promise of a key role could be the difference in their bid to sign Gunners striker Eddie Nketiah on loan.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Ornstein says that the Yorkshire outfit are pushing hard for the youngster, who is also attracting interest from Bristol City and Fortuna Dusseldorf among others.

The BBC Sport correspondent says that the Whites are hopeful that the fact that Orta has close links with fellow Spaniard Emery, as well as the 20-year-old being viewed as playing a prominent role following Kemar Roofe’s departure to Anderlecht, could swing things in their favour.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Nketiah has three goals in 19 first-team appearance for Arsenal with a prolific record of 28 goals in 38 outings for the U23 side, while he has featured regularly during their pre-season campaign.

Orta has chance to come up trumps

It’s fair to say that many Leeds supporters on Twitter have been frustrated by the club’s lack of transfer business in key areas this summer, with a concern of what could happen if injuries strike their small squad.

Find out which stadiums fans have nominated for the worst atmosphere in football in the video below…

Of course, Roofe and Pontus Jansson have both left with only the inexperienced Ben White, who made his Championship debut on Sunday, coming in to replace them as of yet, which has left the Yorkshire team short of depth in two key positions.

Leeds fans haven’t been afraid to show their disapproval of Orta in the past, and all of the club’s first-team signings so far this summer have been on loan – even if they will pay £15m for Helder Costa when his temporary move becomes permanent next summer.

However, if the Spaniard can use his contacts to bring an exciting young attacker in Nketiah to Elland Road before Thursday’s deadline, he would really come up trumps for the Whites. It would have to be seen as a coup for a player who has already scored his first Premier League goal for Arsenal despite only ever playing 79 minutes of top flight football.

Arsenal have shown positive progression in ending a major Achilles heel

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

It may only be one week into the new Premier League campaign but Arsenal look like a different outfit.

They’re buoyed by new signings, among them, the £72m Nicolas Pepe whilst the days of Arsene Wenger are now seemingly long gone.

That isn’t to say issues that arose under the Frenchman aren’t still there but after their opening match of the season, there are reasons to be encouraged.

Why? Because Arsenal not only won on the road, but they also kept a clean sheet.

The Gunners’ shoddy away record is no secret and last season they were particularly poor when it came to their travels in the Premier League.

[ad_pod ]

They won just four games on the road in the top-flight, conceding 35 goals. That was more than both Brighton and Cardiff.

Unai Emery’s men had to wait an awful long time for a game in which they didn’t concede away from the Emirates last term, defeating Watford 1-0 at Vicarage Road in April.

Until that point, they hadn’t kept a single clean sheet in 2018/19 when playing away.

It was a statistic that Arsenal simply couldn’t be proud of. However, they’ve already matched that record in what was a dogged performance at St James’ Park.

At moments in the first half they rode their luck as Joelinton and Miguel Almiron looked threatening against the relatively untried partnership of Sokratis and Calum Chambers.

The pair played together in pre-season but whether they remain first choice with David Luiz waiting in the wings remains to be seen.

But they did look far more composed than can be said of last season.

Arsenal’s home form last term was fantastic and was only bettered by Manchester City and Liverpool. What really cost them a place in the top four, therefore, was their performances on their travels.

It was a real Achilles heel for the Gunners and it has been for the last two years.

Obviously, there is still a whole season to play but on Sunday we saw promising signs that Arsenal are ready to fight and also ready to keep their cool when it matters.

There will undoubtedly be tougher tests to come but the signs so far are good.

Crystal Palace’s DNA is being ignored by Hodgson through use of Meyer & Zaha

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Roy Hodgson’s tactics at Crystal Palace don’t always go down too well with some sections of the club’s fanbase.

His decision to substitute Max Meyer for Jeffrey Schlupp was met with criticism, whilst some fans have also expressed annoyance at the 72-year-old’s satisfaction at a somewhat negative approach.

Hodgson is a vastly experienced manager and he must have his reasons for adopting a defend-first-attack-second style, although his improper use of two players is particularly bugging and also ignores the DNA of the football club.

The Eagles have always prided themselves on having fast, dangerous wingers who take the game to the opposition.

The likes of Yannick Bolasie, Sean Scannell, Victor Moses, Wilfried Zaha, Wayne Routledge, John Salako and Vince Hilaire spring to mind when you think of the flamboyant wide men who have donned the red and blue over the years – there always seems to be at least one tricky customer out on the flanks for Palace.

In Hodgson’s team however, there is not.

That isn’t for the lack of such a character being present – Zaha was included in that aforementioned bunch and he is one of the best in the Premier League at taking people on.

Hodgson is messing with the Palace DNA by using the Ivorian in the wrong position, whilst his use of Meyer is also damaging the club’s traditional impetus on threatening via the flanks.

Firstly, let’s look at Zaha.

The 26-year-old is semi-regularly to regularly used as a centre-forward alongside Christian Benteke under Hodgson, as opposed to starting every game out on the left flank – we have already detailed just how much more effective Zaha is when out wide in terms of scoring goals.

Against Sheffield United last time out, the former Manchester United man was starved of the ball and really failed to make an impact – he completed just two dribbles, had no shots on target and was dispossessed twice.

He should be playing on the left wing, an area in which Hodgson continues to deploy Meyer.

It only takes one watch of a Crystal Palace game to see that the Germany international is categorically not a winger.

He is small, fairly weak, and doesn’t possess the natural burst of pace required to beat a man out wide.

As a result, Meyer tends to naturally drift inside and try to get on the ball in more of a left centre-midfield position, which leaves a gaping hole on the wing.

It wouldn’t take a genius for someone to just tell the pair to be flexible with Zaha moving into the left-wing area when Meyer does drift inside, but Hodgson seems a man too stubborn to allow his players such freedom on the pitch.

The Athletic reveals that Hodgson doesn’t really trust Zaha on the left of his 4-4-2 system as he doesn’t feel he offers enough defensive protection, but that is where his best attacking output comes from.

It’s simply up to the former England manager to decide if he wants to sacrifice a bit of defensive solidarity and have his best player firing on all cylinders, or if he wants to ensure a greater chance of a goal not being conceded.

The problem with this is that, once a goal has been conceded, it is incredibly difficult to get out of this system and be more expansive.

Hodgson’s attacking tactics need a major rethink, and for all the time he is failing to utilise Meyer and Zaha, he is ignoring the DNA which the Eagles have prided themselves on for many years.

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney hits back at The Sun on Twitter

[ad_pod ]The Sun isn’t a very well-liked newspaper amongst some football supporters.Of course, their biggest sin was the gross misreporting of the Hillsborough disaster 30 years ago, which has seen them banned from Liverpool’s stadium and training ground, as well as being condemned by many football supporters across the country. The most recent public figure that they’ve taken aim at is Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, but the former England captain has fired back at the paper.

Earlier in the week, The Sun ran a story about Rooney getting into a lift with a “mystery woman” in a hotel after a “seven-hour booze sessionâ€.

Of course, the article implies something more happened between the footballer and the woman as they write: “The images will not go down well with wife Coleen as she waits for him to return to England from his stint playing in America.â€

Rooney was quick to deny this in his Twitter post as he fully explained what was actually happening, saying she was merely a fan asking for an autograph.

The Sun could have destroyed the England legend’s marriage, and severely affected his children’s lives, in order to sell a few more papers.
