Dhoni, Kohli, Rohit, Bumrah retained by IPL franchises for 2022

Narine, Russell, Williamson and Maxwell are also among the big names who won’t be going into the auction

CSK retentions: Why Moeen may pip du Plessis

MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Sunil Narine, Andre Russell and Glenn Maxwell are among some of the big names that the existing franchises have decided to retain for IPL 2022.Following is a list of names that ESPNcricinfo has confirmed as of Monday evening. The order they appear in is not as per IPL retention list.Chennai Super Kings: Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Moeen Ali.
Kolkata Knight Riders: Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Varun Chakravarthy, Venkatesh Iyer
Sunrisers Hyderabad: Kane Williamson
Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell
Delhi Capitals: Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Axar Patel, Anrich Nortje
Rajasthan Royals: Sanju Samson
Several franchises are still finalising their retention list with the IPL deadline closing at 12pm IST on Tuesday. Recently the IPL, which will be a 10-team league from the 2022 season, had enhanced the auction purse to INR 90 crore while setting various retention slabs. The existing franchises can retain a total of four players (max. two overseas) while the two new unnamed franchise – to be based in Lucknow and Ahmedabad – can buy upto three players each from the pool after the original eight teams have made their retentions.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

In case a franchise retains four players, INR 42 crore would be deducted from the total purse. For three retentions the purse would shrink by INR 33 crore, while for two retentions it would reduce by INR 24 crore and in case of one retention INR 14 crore would be deducted from the purse.Earlier this month, Dhoni had expressed the hope of playing his last T20I in Chennai. The Super Kings have brought him one step closer to that by retaining him ahead of the mega auction in 2022. Having won the title last year, the franchise has kept hold of another of its best performers in Ruturaj Gaikwad. The 24-year old opener was the highest run-getter in 2021 with a tally of 635 and his partnership with Faf du Plessis provided the basis of their newfound hit-from-ball-one batting plan. And while the South African might also have been considered as an option to retain, the management preferred the all-round talents of Moeen Ali.Much as he had said while giving up the captaincy, Virat Kohli will remain with Royal Challengers Bangalore. He has represented them since the start of the IPL in 2008 and was one of only two players the franchise chose to hold of, along with Maxwell.Rookie sensation Venkatesh Iyer will stay at Kolkata Knight Riders after a stellar season that also fast tracked him into the Indian T20I side. As a hard-hitting batter and bowler capable of withstanding even the pressure of the death overs, he was expected to fetch a huge price in the auction but it turns out he didn’t even need the auction for that.

McDermott 127 breaks records and Renegades

He becomes the first batter to score three centuries in a BBL season

AAP29-Dec-2021Hobart Hurricanes opener Ben McDermott become the first player in BBL history to crack successive centuries, firing his side to a comprehensive 85-run win against Melbourne Renegades.McDermott clattered nine sixes and as many fours in a stunning knock of 127 from 65 balls at the Docklands Stadium on Wednesday night. It was the third-highest individual score in the BBL, behind Melbourne Stars’ Marcus Stoinis (147*) and Hurricanes team-mate Matthew Wade (130 not out).It came to an anti-climactic end when he was run-out by Sam Harper on the final ball of Hurricanes’ innings. At the halfway point of their innings, Hurricanes were ticking along slowly at 3 for 66, with McDermott unbeaten on 39 off 31 balls. But the got going during the power surge as he and Peter Handscomb took 44 runs off Zahir Khan in the 13th over and Kane Richardson, who finished with 0 for 63 from four overs on return from illness.Tim David came to the party late with four huge sixes in a nine-ball cameo as Hurricanes belted the most runs ever recorded in the back half of a BBL innings for a total of 5 for 206.In response, Renegades opener Harper whacked the first ball of their chase for six and made a gritty 57 off 35. But the hosts were never seriously in the hunt, bowled out for 121 in 15.5 overs.Tom Rogers and Sandeep Lamichhane took six wickets between them for Hurricanes.McDermott is the first player to hit three BBL centuries, with two of those against the team that delisted him at the end of 2016.Promoted to the top of the order on Christmas Eve, McDermott now has 304 runs in three innings as an opener at a strike rate of 180.95.He clubbed 67 off 43 against Stars and followed it up with an unbeaten 110 off 60 against Adelaide Strikers on Monday. The three monster efforts have led to a hat-trick of wins and put Hurricanes (with four wins and three losses) firmly back in the title hunt after a scratchy start to the season.Renegades (one win and five losses) are staring down the barrel of a third-straight wooden spoon after five consecutive losses.

USA-Ireland ODI series cancelled due to Covid-19 outbreak

Significant financial blow to USA Cricket as historic series fails to take off

Peter Della Penna28-Dec-2021A fresh Covid-19 outbreak within the managed environment has forced the three-match ODI series between USA and Ireland to be called off. The two boards have not put out an official statement as of Tuesday at noon, but the two teams did not show up for their training sessions as stadium ground staff and workers began disassembling hospitality and advertising signage at Broward County Stadium throughout the morning and early afternoon. Multiple sources have confirmed that the ODI series has been scrapped due to a number of positive Covid-19 tests in the traveling parties, and USA’s players have been notified that their tickets are being booked to fly home today.Related

  • First ODI cancelled after match official tests positive

After canceling the first ODI due to a positive test among the ICC officiating crew, the second of the matches was initially postponed 24 hours after a string of positive tests on both sides – a member of Ireland’s support staff as well as a number of USA’s playing team – though the majority of them turned out to be false positives. Both teams were due to train on Tuesday at the Broward County Stadium ahead of the delayed first match of the series on December 29. However, neither squad arrived at the stadium. Multiple sources told ESPNcricinfo that even though no Ireland players tested positive in a fresh round of PCR tests, multiple members of the Ireland support staff, as well as partners and family members of Ireland players tested positive, meaning that a large number of Ireland players were deemed to be close contacts. The situation is similar in some ways to the incident that took place in Melbourne this week when four members of the England touring party – two staff members and two family members – tested positive for Covid. However, unlike the fate of the ODI series between USA and Ireland, the Ashes Test match went ahead anyway when all players returned negative Tests. After numerous waves of retests following the false positives that came out of the USA squad camp, only one new player returned a positive PCR test, according to sources. But the fact that it was a player meant that the entire USA team was also deemed to be close contacts of the positive player. The off-field discipline of the traveling parties is also a cause for scrutiny. The majority of the USA players were kept to their hotel rooms throughout the staging of the series as a consequence of a number of early positive Covid-19 tests ahead of the first T20I that was held on December 22.However, the Ireland squad members are understood to have been allowed to leave the team hotel periodically throughout the past week, including on Christmas Day, and were allowed to mix and mingle with traveling family members and partners. It was only after the first Ireland support staff member tested positive on December 27 that their players went into full isolation mode in their hotel rooms. The cancellation of the ODI series is expected to deal a significant financial blow to USA Cricket, who had gone all out by investing resources to make the historic series happen at short notice. The initial announcement came on November 9 that USA Cricket would be hosting a Full Member for a bilateral series for the first time, giving them six weeks to organize the event. Though the two-match T20I series was completed on December 23 with a total ticketed attendance of just over 1,000 fans (a USA Cricket official stated that attendance for the first match was 328 followed by 744 for the 2nd T20I*) across the two games, the ODIs never got off the ground. As of Tuesday, the Ireland squad is still scheduled to depart on December 31 for Jamaica to take part in three ODIs and one T20I against West Indies. According to a Cricket Ireland official, “The positives on the staff will have to stay back, but with another PCR pre-travel pending, the main group will still travel as planned.”

Shreyas Iyer's path to coveted No. 3 spot is a road well travelled

After eight innings at No. 3, Shreyas has hit 340 runs at a strike rate of 147

Andrew Fidel Fernando27-Feb-20222:13

Shreyas Iyer: ‘Want to enjoy the scenarios provided on the field’

Look, there’s a lot of competition for places in this team, and I’d be happy just to be in the XI, but if I could choose, I’d bat No. 3. This, essentially, was the vibe of Shreyas Iyer’s press conference after he’d struck 73 not out off 45 in the last match, hit 204 runs at a strike rate of 174 through the series, and claimed the Player of the Series trophy for those efforts. It’s kind of a bold thing to say, since the long-term occupant of that No. 3 spot is a guy called Virat Kohli, and now there’s also Suryakumar Yadav to consider. But after eight innings at No. 3 (six of which have come against Sri Lanka, by the way), Shreyas has hit a whopping 340 runs at a strike rate of 147, average up at 68. These are not un-stunning numbers.”When you play the T20 format, if you bat in top three, that’s the only place you can pace the innings,” Shreyas said. “If you bat after that, you can’t give yourself time – you need to go from ball one. If I had to say the best number for me to bat, it’s obviously No. 3.”Related

Still, such is the depth in the India side, that Shreyas does not take his place for granted, even after a hugely successful series such as this. He was not dismissed across the three matches, hitting 57* off 28, 74* off 44, and 73* off 45. All up, he struck seven sixes and 20 fours in the series.”Coming not out in all three games was a commendable performance for me, I feel. But if you see the competition in our team, it’s immense. Every individual is capable of winning you games. For me, I want to enjoy every opportunity I’ve been provided with. I like to finish off the games – that’s my mindset when I go onto the field.”I can’t talk about cementing my place in the team, because the competition is so much, and you need to be flexible about batting in any position and any given situation. My mindset is just to grab as many opportunities as I can and make use of it. “Although the series turned out to be a roaring success for him personally, Iyer revealed he had had to fight through difficult moments, particularly in the first match, in Lucknow.”In the first game itself, when I’d batted 12 balls and had 12 runs, I thought I need to charge on from there, because I didn’t get that proper start,” he said. “In the last two games, the starts I got were really good, and from there it’s easy to manoeuvre and manipulate the field. But when you don’t get starts, it’s really important you get your eyes in, and you can target a particular bowler. That really worked out for me in the first game.”

Deepak Chahar ruled out of IPL 2022

The Chennai Super Kings quick hasn’t recovered sufficiently from the back injury he picked up recently

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Apr-2022Deepak Chahar, the Chennai Super Kings quick, has been ruled out of the 2022 IPL altogether because of the back injury that had prevented him from taking part in the initial part of the competition. He had picked up the injury while undergoing rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, where he was recovering from the quadricep tear he picked during India’s T20I series against West Indies in February.Related

The initial assessment by the NCA physios suggested that Chahar, acquired by his old team Super Kings for INR 14 crore (US$1.84 million approx.) at the February mega auction, would be able to play a part in the tournament after missing a major chunk of matches. Super Kings were, therefore, expecting their new-ball frontman to return in late April. But that has changed now, and it is understood that BCCI and the Indian team management want him to be in peak shape as India prepare for the T20 World Cup starting in October.A swing bowler with the new ball as well as an able lower-order hitter, Chahar’s absence has already hurt the balance of Super Kings’ side so far this season. They lost their first four matches on the hop, and finally got on the points table in only their previous – the fifth – match of the season, following a win over Royal Challengers Bangalore. Only Mumbai Indians, winless after five games, are below them on the table.

Super Kings have picked up only four powerplay wickets this season, two of them by Maheesh Theekshana in the last game against Royal Challengers, and two by Mukesh Choudhary, who has been entrusted with the new ball in Chahar’s absence. He has, however, been on the expensive side, going at an economy rate of ten runs an over in the powerplay.Chahar’s record for Super Kings in the same phase makes for fine reading: he has an economy rate of 7.61 with 42 wickets in 58 innings during the first six overs. While Choudhary – as well as Tushar Deshpande, Adam Milne and Chris Jordan among quicks – have been tried in powerplays, there hasn’t been much success.Among other options, Super Kings have KM Asif and Rajvardhan Hangargekar to pick from their squad.

Shakib Al Hasan out of first Sri Lanka Test after testing positive for Covid

He joins a growing list of absentees, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taskin Ahmed also unavailable for Bangladesh

Mohammad Isam10-May-2022Shakib Al Hasan has tested positive for Covid, and is ruled out of the first Test against Sri Lanka that begins on May 15. He tested positive on Tuesday in a PCR and a rapid antigen test, pre-requisites for joining the team.Shakib was supposed to join the Bangladesh Test squad on Wednesday, two days after they started training in Chattogram on Monday. According to a BCB press release, he will now recover in self-isolation and will be re-tested in due course.Bangladesh haven’t named a replacement immediately but they did pick allrounder Mosaddek Hossain as cover for the injured Mehidy Hasan Miraz shortly after they had originally announced the Test squad.Shakib’s absence in Chattogram is going to be a major blow to the home side who are already without Mehidy and Taskin Ahmed, who wasn’t picked in the squad due to a shoulder injury he picked up in South Africa last month. Shoriful Islam is in the Test squad but his participation is subject to a fitness test ahead of the game.Bangladesh’s batting too needed Shakib’s experience in the middle order after they slumped to 53 and 80 in two fourth innings in South Africa. His absence usually means they have to pick two players to make up for his skills, but it is an even more significant blow since Bangladesh will be expected to put up better performances against Sri Lanka in a home World Test Championship series. It is the fifth Test that Shakib will miss since playing one against Pakistan back in December last year. He skipped the New Zealand series due to personal reasons and then had to miss the South Africa Tests due to illness in his family. Shakib has now played three Tests out of Bangladesh’s 11 since his return from the one year ban.

Harry Brook, Adam Lyth find blend of virtues to keep Yorkshire thriving in spite of everything

Cheap dismissal of Joe Root can’t dent progress, as young-old partnership holds firm

David Hopps20-May-2022Yorkshire 269 for 4 (Lyth 118*, Brook 82) lead Warwickshire 244 (Burgess 96, Patterson 3-43) by 25 runsAnybody who witnessed last week’s Roses match, and reflected upon the favourites to win the Championship season, would feel that it was a strange old world if Yorkshire were to find themselves ahead of Lancashire when the first raft of fixtures ends on Sunday evening.Yet that is a potential outcome after Lancashire, dominant in the Roses match and strongly fancied to take their first title since 2011, suffered a first-innings collapse against Essex at Old Trafford and Yorkshire moved into a position of strength against last year’s winners, Warwickshire.Strong first-innings batting performances have been at the heart of Yorkshire’s season and they remained wedded to the task at Headingley, driven to 269 for 4, and a lead of 25 when rain caused a premature halt 17 overs early, by the England call-up Harry Brook and a batter whose England days have passed and who now must stave off retirement as long as he can, Adam Lyth. New and old in harness in a fourth-wicket stand of 159 in 43 overs that began cagily but gradually took the game away from Warwickshire with deceptive ease.It is a rare occasion when the dismissal of Joe Root, who was out for 8 when he edged a late-swing delivery from Henry Brookes to the wicketkeeper, leads to such a positive outcome. It was a poignant stand in many ways (this is new Yorkshire after all, where hearts are open and emotion encouraged), because Brook’s uncomplicated ambition dovetailed with Lyth’s more complex determination to keep his career on the rails. He has been a loyal and skilful pro, but he had 140 runs at 18 in a season of high scores and on the first day had brought groans from the crowd with two dropped slip catches, and had been stung enough to respond. For nearly six hours, including an hour on the first evening, he set his season to rights. It was a player who knows him best, Will Rhodes, once of the same parish, who restrained him most, also the left-arm spin of Danny Briggs, but otherwise he milked the offside with relish whenever the opportunity presented itself.Whereas Brook’s innings are an outpouring of talent, Lyth was a worthy old pro, buckling down. He just avoided falling at short leg, off Briggs, on 87, and after his century was achieved, he was nearly run out on two occasions by Alex Davies as fatigue took hold. The rain which fell at 5.30pm must have felt blissful as it fell upon his forehead. He dedicated his innings to his wife, Lily, who has suffered a year of illness but who is reportedly over the worst. Life still happens outside the confines of professional sport.Brook has only failed to reach 50 once this season, and he had 82 to his name when he edged an excellent outswinger from Oliver Hannon-Dalby to first slip. He is a much less fretful figure than he was this time last year, which is a bit of a shame for those who self-indulgently like to see a bit of eccentricity in their cricketers, but a proof of his growing maturity. A Test debut will not be long delayed. As Lyth remarked: “Nobody is hitting the ball better than Harry”.Brook is the leading scorer in Division One with 840 runs at a remarkable average of 140. With his departure, probably went another season – this one of six games and benign surfaces – where nobody has seriously challenged Graeme Hick’s 1000 runs by the end of May, last achieved in 1988. Ben Compton (like his cousin Nick before him) has also come within wondering distance, but the feat is now distant enough to be dubbed by Wisden as one of the “quaintest pursuits” in English cricket. Shift the Championship to later in the season, where it should reside, and it may never be mentioned again. He has doubtless played more soundly this season; there were more play-and-misses here than he has been accustomed to as the ball continued to swing. He goes to Lord’s for the first Test in the knowledge that he will be the batter omitted, but he has a new management team to impress at close quarters and, anyway, he is only a calf strain away from a Test debut.Yorkshire’s season of batting consistency is entirely out of character with recent seasons and all the more creditable considering the racism debate that sullied the club in the close season (and that, if you care to scratch the surface, still exists). Lord Kamlesh Patel is a temporary chairman and does not really have the time, or indeed the circumstances, to continue for much longer. Darren Gough, still based in the south, probably remains an equally short-term hit as director of cricket. The appointment of a full-time chief executive remains in abeyance. And occasional tensions rear their head – a life member was reportedly barred from the ground this week after a contretemps with racist overtones and emails are still circulating about the minutiae of AGM legality that are best left unread. People really do need to attend to their courgettes. The ECB’s inquiry is also proving to be as slow as was Yorkshire’s and, as much as the county deserves to know if it will face a points penalty – players and coaches have a right to know if they are pressing for the title or avoiding relegation – decisions that should be made quickly for the good of the game are nearly always made slowly because somewhere, on behalf of someone, the lawyers are taking their shilling. Charges might be laid within a few weeks, although charging a new set-up committed to change for the perceived failures of the regime no longer in power would seem to possess dubious logic. That Yorkshire are holding body and soul together during all this is a tribute to their coaching staff, led by Ottis Gibson, their captain Steve Patterson, whose maturity in the face of adversity has never been more needed, and a playing staff who have got on with the job. They have only won once this season. It is not the done thing for a Yorkshire Championship crowd to cheer, but if they win again, and move above Lancashire in the table (still quite an ask against the draw specialists of Division One) during such a testing season, then the optimism and resilience of youth deserves commendation from every corner.

Jack Leach withdrawn from Test after suffering concussion symptoms during fielding incident

Matt Parkinson makes debut as England’s first concussion replacement

Andrew Miller02-Jun-2022Jack Leach was withdrawn from the first LV= Insurance Test against New Zealand at Lord’s and is a doubt for next week’s second Test at Trent Bridge, after suffering concussion symptoms following a heavy fall in the outfield.Concussion protocols allow for a player to be substituted out of the game so long as the man coming in is a like-for-like replacement. England opted for Matt Parkinson, who arrived at Lord’s from Manchester an hour before the close on the first day and can play a full part in the game.Dom Bess and Moeen Ali, who retired from Test cricket last year but has signalled his willingness to consider a return, were among the other potential call-ups that Parkinson beat to make it to the XI and play his first-ever Test match. The 25-year-old Lancashire legspinner has 126 wickets from 37 first-class games.Leach, who was playing in his first home Test match since the Ashes in 2019, suffered the injury in the sixth over of the match, as he chased a Devon Conway drive to the backward-point boundary. As Leach dived, successfully dragging the ball back from the edge of the rope, he landed heavily on his head, and appeared to injure his neck in the process. New Zealand’s medical team were the first on the scene, and attended to him for several minutes before he was able to walk from the field of play back to the pavilion. However, after subsequent examination from the ECB medical team, the decision was taken to withdraw him from the match. “Jack Leach has symptoms of concussion following his head injury whilst fielding,” read an ECB statement. “As per concussion guidelines, he has been withdrawn from this Test.”In a subsequent statement, the ECB confirmed that he would be out of action for the next seven days at least in line with protocols, meaning his participation in the Trent Bridge Test, which gets underway on June 10, is in doubt.Parkinson will make his Test debut as a concussion replacement•Getty Images

“He’s a tough character,” Matthew Potts, England’s debutant, said. “It was a freak thing that can happen. The first thing he said was, ‘I’m fine – I saved the four though!’ That is testament to his character. He’s a tough lad. We said we are going to really hunt the ball down in the field and put in a good fielding display, which we did.”Brendon McCullum, England’s new Test coach, had made a point of asking players to keep chasing every ball before this Test. “Brendon said one basic thing for his mindset is: you chase every ball to the boundary as hard as you can until it’s at the boundary edge,” Stuart Broad said on Tuesday. “That is just a mindset of positivity, all the time – that you are going to give everything to this game.”Parkinson, who has played nine games for England across the white-ball formats, has been a regular member of touring squads over the last two years and believed he was close to making his Test debut in the Caribbean. He has taken 24 wickets at 25.95 in the County Championship this season, the most of any spinner in the country.”I’m sure he has had an interesting drive down,” Potts said. “Receiving that call, I’m sure there will have been a wave of emotions. He can collect his thoughts tonight and approach tomorrow with a clear head rather than coming in very flustered from a freak scenario.”He becomes the second Test cricketer to make a debut as a concussion replacement after Zimbabwe’s Brian Mudzinganyama, who replaced Kevin Kasuza against Sri Lanka in early 2020.

Wayne Madsen century seals record-breaking victory for Derbyshire over Durham

Unbeaten 47-ball ton allows Falcons to complete their highest T20 run chase

ECB Reporters Network03-Jul-2022Wayne Madsen scored his first T20 century as Derbyshire Falcons finished their Vitality Blast North Group campaign with a record-breaking five-wicket victory over Durham at Derby.Madsen scored a brilliant unbeaten 100 off 47 balls with 11 fours and three sixes as the Falcons completed their highest T20 run chase by cruising to 194 for 5 to set them up for the quarter-finals.Durham had posted a challenging 193 for 5 through Ollie Robinson’s 43 from 27 balls and Michael Jones’s 42 off 22 with Falcons leg-spinner Mattie McKiernan taking 3 for 29.But Madsen was at his inventive best and supported by Shan Masood’s 31 off 28 balls and Hilton Cartwright, 38 from 23, the Falcons sealed a ninth group win with five balls to spare.Durham had lost nine of their previous matches but started well after Jones smashed 19 from the first over by Ben Aitchison who was making his first Blast appearance of the season following a back injury. The seamer was driven for three consecutive fours before Jones launched him over the long on boundary and with Scott Borthwick finding his range after an uncertain start, Durham were 67 without loss after the powerplay. But McKiernan shifted the momentum by removing them both in consecutive overs as Borthwick failed to clear long on and Jones drove to long off.Ashton Turner pulled the leg-spinner for six but fell next ball trying to repeat the shot and it was left to Robinson to pick up the tempo. After he survived a sharp chance on 20 at backward point, Robinson pulled and drove Alex Hughes and Luis Reece for three sixes as 31 came from the 14th and 15th overs.Robinson skied Aitchison to long off but Brydon Carse scored 17 from nine balls and Jonathan Bushnell an unbeaten 25 off 20 to take Durham to a competitive total. The Falcons lost Reece in the first over, lbw playing across the line at Carse, but Masood was soon into his elegant stride, easing the ball to the ropes on both sides of the wicket.Madsen scooped Ben Raine over the wicketkeeper for six in the fifth over and pulled Nathan Sowter for another before a savage straight drive almost took out Raine on its way to the fence. The danger signs were flashing for Durham as Madsen tore into Carse, pulling him for four and driving him for a third six to reach 50 off only 25 balls.Durham had to break the stand and Andrew Tye delivered by trapping Masood lbw in the 10th over which cost only three runs.Raine struck in the 11th when Leus du Plooy cut to backward point but Cartwright marked his first Blast appearance for the Falcons by driving Borthwick and Sowter for sixes..Cartwright pulled and cut Tye for two fours and Madsen inflicted further damage in the 16th when he pulled Borthwick for four before the bowler’s shy at the stumps fizzed away to the boundary.Cartwright was caught at long off but Madsen cruised to his hundred to complete a memorable afternoon for him and the Falcons.
