Need to guide, not teach, India A players – Dravid

Rahul Dravid has given a hint of his approach to dealing with India A players, saying he is ready to work with different mindsets and objectives. While the newly-appointed India Under-19 and India A coach feels that his mentor’s role at Rajasthan Royals will aide him in his new challenge, he doesn’t see himself “teaching” India A cricketers.”The selectors and the senior team management generally have a vision as to what sort of players they are looking to pick,” Dravid said on the sidelines of the convocation ceremony of the International Institute of Sports Management in Mumbai on Wednesday. “Sometimes you pick young players in India A, sometimes you pick players who are looking to make a comeback and want to push for the national team. Sometimes you pick players depending on what future tours are in mind.””So I think there are various parameters and you just can’t decide these kind of players should be selected or that kind. I see my job as coaching the players they have selected and not in the selection side of things. My job is to coach the players and try to help them to get to the next level.”Over the last couple of years, India A squads have consisted of fringe players alongside promising youngsters who have excelled on the domestic circuit. While the fringe players enter an A tour with an objective to continue knocking on the selectors’ door, the youngsters are more inclined towards facing new opponents in unfamiliar conditions to improve their skill sets and temperament.Dravid admitted that his experience as a mentor with IPL franchise Royals will come in handy in his new avatar. “The fact that I have spent a couple of years at Rajasthan Royals in the role of a mentor, I have seen the other side of what the sport is. I have always seen it as a player and I have spent many years as a player,” Dravid said.”The couple of years that I spent outside in the management and the coaching side of things, there is a lot of learning that you get all the time, and the more you do it, the better you get. It is like playing. I am looking forward to it.”While Dravid reiterated that he was “looking forward to” working closely with Ravi Shastri and his support staff of the senior team, the former India captain echoed Sunil Gavaskar’s opinion of the senior team not requiring a coach. At a function in Mumbai recently, Gavaskar had said that the senior team needs more of a mentor than a coach. Agreeing with Gavaskar, Dravid stressed that he would not prefer to “teach” India A players, instead helping them bring out their best.”There is no need for basic coaching at that level. You are looking for someone as the guiding factor or someone to create a good environment which helps to grow and share some of the experiences that we have,” Dravid said. “My philosophy is not going to be teaching. I don’t think you need to teach India A players how to play. They all know how to bat and bowl and they are there because they are successful. It is just about trying to help them to get to the next level.”

Worcestershire prosper as Notts left threadbare

Not everybody believes that a side with such abundance of batting talent as Nottinghamshire are actually in a relegation scrap

Not everybody believes that a side with such abundance of batting talent as Nottinghamshire are actually in a relegation scrap. Perhaps they are right. To be in a relegation scrap, it is incumbent upon you to do a bit of scrapping. Dismissed disturbingly easily for 240 by Worcestershire at Trent Bridge, it is not immediately apparent that they are doing just that.Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire’s coach, preferred to contend that their batsmen are merely out of nick and suggested that their first-innings score was just “a little under par”. “There is no point getting cross after day one,” he said. But Nottinghamshire face an ordeal. They must brace themselves for contesting the rest of the match with a three-strong bowling unit after Andy Carter and Luke Fletcher, both recently back from loan spells, withdrew from the attack in quick succession because of injury.”How do you manage a three-man bowling attack?” said Newell, lugubriously. “Good luck with that captain. Especially when one of them is a spinner on a pitch where he probably shouldn’t really be bowling. In an ideal world you want to go for it in the first hour, but if things don’t happen for you where do you go after 12 o’clock?”Carter, who famously insisted in pre-season that he is not prone to injury, but has just had a lot of them, has a side strain that could mean another prolonged lay-off and Fletcher went to hospital to check on the extent of a damaged hamstring. As for Worcestershire, who lie third bottom, every time they are promoted to Division One, they harden themselves for another struggle. They hang in matches for all they are worth – an admirable young seam attack did just that when Nottinghamshire were 98 for 1, at which point Alex Hales left a ball from Joe Leach that removed his off stump – and then redouble their efforts whenever they get on a bit of a roll.To make matters worse for Newell, their place alongside Hampshire at the foot of Division One coincided with a members’ meeting at Trent Bridge. The Nottingham recorded how Newell was pilloried for being an England selector. It could be worse after a season like this: he could have been pilloried for being a Nottinghamshire selector. You had to admire Newell’s originality when he defended his England selectorial role (an honour surely, not an imposition) on the grounds that he was “very boring”. In his defence, it should be pointed out that this was an exaggeration just in case people start avoiding him in the Post Office.”This time last year I was an England selector and we were flying high in the Championship and playing good T20 cricket. I’d like to think I’m capable of combining two jobs. The selector’s role takes up very little of my time with Notts. In a year and a half I’ve missed two days of cricket to attend meetings. I don’t go to other matches. I do it all watching Notts or watching a video analysis system of other games. I’m a very boring man. I do that at home.”Two years ago, the Dull Men’s Club – it really does exist – produced a 2014 calendar. January was the president of the UK Roundabout Appreciation Society; April’s charms concerned a man who had a museum of milk bottles. Not everybody finds county cricket interesting, so if Newell’s video analysis ever gets entirely out of control it might be wise in future years to keep an eye out for September. When Newell walked into the lunchtime members’ forum, Nottinghamshire were quite healthily placed at 102 for 2. Michael Lumb had clipped Jack Shantry weakly to midwicket and then there had been Hales’ aberration – enough to goad one member into terming the world No. 3 ranked T20 batsman “useless” and demand he was dropped for younger talent. Newell flourished the averages in retort, which predictably fell in Hales’ favour. But if he skipped back up the steps to the dressing room, that vigour soon deserted him. Nottinghamshire’s innings began to unravel – two Taylors gone within five overs in early afternoon, James lbw to Leach as he tried to manufacture a work through midwicket, not for the first time; Brendon, after a robust top score of 69, failing to strike Shantry down the ground. The rush of wickets fell to Charlie Morris with Samit Patel, Chris Read and Ben Hutton – the last two within the space of three balls – all caught in the wicketkeeper/slip cordon. Worcestershire bowled consistently after lunch as Nottinghamshire lost eight wickets for 92 in 33 overs. An unbeaten half-century by Richard Oliver then left them in reasonable order by the close.Leach, Shantry and Morris now have 103 Championship wickets between them and they were ably supported on this occasion by Ed Barnard, a former England U-19 in only his second first-class match, who gained rewards for some tight overs with the wicket of Ben Hilfenhaus. The praise of his coach Steve Rhodes was fitting. “I thought Ed was outstanding,” he said. “That lad is only 19 and to bowl with such control and movement is great.”A last-wicket retort of 50 in seven overs between Riki Wessels and Carter allowed Nottinghamshire some release until Saeed Ajmal had Wessels caught in the deep for 65.Ajmal’s involvement lasted only nine balls so it was hard to draw conclusions on the judgment of Worcestershire’s captain Daryl Mitchell that the remodelled version will “go from strength to strength”. It will be intriguing to see how Nottinghamshire deal with him second time around.

Guarani e São Bento apenas empatam no Walter Ribeiro

Na próxima rodada, o Guarani recebe o embalado Sport, no Brinco de Ouro. O São Bento visita o Criciúma, em Santa Catarina.

O confronto

Lancashire attack excels to quell Durham

Lancashire moved above hosts Durham into fourth place in the NatWest T20 Blast North Group after sealing a six-wicket victory at Chester-le-Street

Freddie Wilde25-Jun-2015
ScorecardThis match will be forgotten in two weeks, perhaps even in two days, some may have forgotten it already. Another T20. A T20 in cold, wet, dark Durham on a Thursday. But there was much to be savoured in this encounter between two teams desperate for a win.Too often we are told that T20 is the most inferior of cricket’s three formats: uncouth and brash it requires few and basic skills, is unsubtle and vacuous, but there was little evidence of such characteristics in a genuinely fascinating, high-skilled match. The first ball of Durham’s innings, struck for four, and in fact, the first six overs, blitzed for 61 and involving a pinch-hitter, suggested an evening of runs, but under moody skies the cricket that followed was tight, tense, and hard-fought. Runs were hard to come by and those who did succeed – Ashwell Prince and Mark Stoneman being the two batsmen to score more than 26 – did so in enjoyably contrasting methods. This was a pitch, with uneven pace, bounce and seam, on which no batsman ever really seemed at ease. In future we will not, but perhaps we should, ask of batsmen who score runs around the world; ‘but can he do it on a cold Thursday night in Durham?’Stoneman had joy in a way that no other batsman did. He began Durham’s Powerplay with what was in hindsight absurd aggression. Striking six fours and a six he propelled Durham through to 61 for 3 after six overs and 93 for 3 after ten. But Stoneman was an island of attack in amongst a sea of attrition. After the Powerplay Durham hit just three boundaries and hit none in the final 57 balls of the innings. While the scoreboard may show that Lancashire’s seamers took the majority of the wickets – Kyle Jarvis with 3 for 24 and James Faulkner 3 for 27 – it was the spinners who laid the foundations for their success. In fact, perhaps spinners is not the right word – slow bowlers would be better. There was very little spin on offer, so much so that Steven Croft was at one point bowling little more than split-finger, leg-cutting drifters. But they were hugely effective. Stephan Parry and Aaron Lilley bowled more conventionally, but again with little turn available it was the canny changes of pace, shifts in line and clever use of flight and angles that unsettled Durham’s batsmen who struggled for timing and fluency.Lancashire’s slow trio bowled 11 overs between them for just 61 runs, pulling Durham back from a strong start to choke the second half of their innings in which they scored just 48 for 7.Although Durham’s 141 felt under-par given their superb start, when Lancashire began their run-chase it was unclear whether they had bowled brilliantly or whether conditions had changed markedly.Indeed although Lancashire always seemed in charge the chase was never easy. A lively 17-ball 26, a microcosm of modern batsmanship, from Karl Brown got Lancashire ahead of the rate, but just as it had for Durham, taking pace off the ball took wickets and stifled Lancashire’s run-scoring.But as long as Prince was at the crease, there was a sense of assurance to Lancashire’s batting. He was dropped twice but manipulated the field expertly and picked off the occasional bad balls to score an excellent fifty. But against tight bowling it was not so much run-scoring as it was run-acquirement. Well that was at least until James Faulkner.Used to such tight, tense finishes, Faulkner, with 40 still required from 27, clubbed a six to steady Lancashire’s nerves. And when the last ball of the seventeenth over was hit for four by Prince and the first ball of the eighteenth hit for six by Faulkner the result was no longer in question. There was still one more moment of drama to come though. Faulkner, looking to surge Lancashire to the target was outstandingly caught by Ryan Pringle diving and sliding towards the deep midwicket boundary. Pringle, aware that he was about to clip the boundary rope flicked the ball to Scott Borthwick who juggled it once, twice, and three more times before completing an amazing catch. That the scoreboard will simply read c Borthwick belies the nature of the catch, just as the scoreboard will mask the true nature of an excellent match. In the end Lancashire won comfortably with eleven balls to spare and given the way they bowled and indeed Prince batted they were deserved winners, but the great Neville Cardus was certainly right when he famously wrote “there ought to be some other means of reckoning quality in this the best and loveliest of games; the scoreboard is an ass.”

State associations to weigh in on Lodha report at SGM

The BCCI’s state units are expected to give their views on the Lodha panel’s report at the board’s special general meeting in Mumbai on Friday

Arun Venugopal18-Feb-2016

The BCCI SGM will consider recommendations like ‘One state, one vote’ and the age cap on administrators recommended by the Lodha panel•AFP

The BCCI’s special general meeting in Mumbai on Friday will discuss the views of its member associations on the Lodha committee’s recommendations, after the Supreme Court gave the board a deadline of March 3 to inform if the recommendations will be implemented. According to a source, the BCCI might consider forming a panel to study the inputs provided by the member units and firm up a response to the Supreme Court. While the Delhi & District Cricket Association [DDCA] has rejected a number of recommendations, other state associations have expressed reservations about some aspects of the report. ESPNcricinfo understands that many state associations are either opposed to or seek modifications to the following recommendations:One state, one vote
The panel’s recommendation that only one association from a state should be given a vote has, predictably, drawn strong opposition from the western units, which comprise three associations each from Gujarat and Maharashtra. If the recommendation comes into effect, four of the six associations would be stripped of voting rights and reduced to the status of an associate member. All the associations, however, will be allowed to field teams and will remain eligible for grants.ICC Board meetings also likely on the agenda

The BCCI will also hold an emergent meeting of its working committee before the SGM. The Lodha Committee’s recommendations are expected to be the key theme in this meeting as well. A discussion on the recent ICC Board and committee meetings, which reviewed the world body’s constitution and governance structures, is also expected to take place in the SGM, although the primary focus is expected to be on the Lodha report.

“State boundaries shouldn’t be confused with cricketing boundaries,” a president of one of the associations said. “How can you take away the legacy and contributions of many of these associations which have been in existence from even before independence?” The western associations are understood to have already conveyed their objections to this recommendation to the BCCI.Bringing BCCI under the RTI ambit
The proposal to bring the board under the purview of the Right to Information Act has been met with near-unanimous opposition from the BCCI’s units. The implementation of this recommendation would require the BCCI to make public details of its activities. While a board official pointed out that the issue of the BCCI being amenable to the RTI is sub judice, another said it was a blow to its autonomy. “The BCCI generates its own funds and so it can’t be compared to other sports bodies,” the official said. “When you bring the BCCI under the ambit of the RTI some of the questions that we would eventually end up getting are about why ‘A’ wasn’t selected and why ‘B’ was. How can we disclose aspects of selection in public?”Age limit and cooling-off period
The Lodha report disqualifies a person over the age of 70 from holding office or contesting elections in the BCCI. The panel also recommended that an office-bearer should not serve two consecutive terms – each must be broken by a “cooling-off” period. The first recommendation would make it untenable for the likes of Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Niranjan Shah to continue as heads of their respective state bodies. “When the Indian political system doesn’t prescribe any age-limit for those who can contest elections why target the BCCI alone?” a board official asked. Another official said that a cooling-off period would hamper continuity in administration. No ministers or bureaucrats as office bearers
This recommendation, according to a few officials, would add to the difficulties of administering state associations. “It is not right to paint all politicians with the same brush,” the president of a state association said. He said that the presence of a minister or a bureaucrat helped overcome administrative roadblocks. “When you try to organise a match, there are many issues to handle that involve the police, corporation, commercial taxes and other aspects of state machinery,” he said. “You need somebody to shield you, and also a politician or a bureacrat’s administrative abilities cannot be discounted.”No ad breaks between overs
Although this recommendation isn’t a direct challenge to any of the state associations many officials have raised concerns over the consequent shrinking of revenue to the board. An official said that if the revenue earned from the sale of broadcast rights falls it would have a direct impact on the state associations. “The BCCI has managed to create state-of-the-art facilities in many places with the revenue earned from TV rights,” the official said. “This would slow down all work related to infrastructure development.”

Dean, Handscomb put Victoria in sight of first-innings lead

Travis Dean became the fourth batsman to cap off his first season with a century as his 111 helped Victoria take giant strides towards overhauling SA’s 340 in the Shield final

The Report by Daniel Brettig in Adelaide27-Mar-2016
ScorecardGetty Images

Back in October, Travis Dean was the talk of Australian cricket, as only the second man after Arthur Morris to make dual centuries on his state debut. As Victoria sought to squeeze South Australia, Dean joined another select group by becoming the fourth batsman to cap his first season with a hundred in the Sheffield Shield final.Justin Langer, Phillip Hughes and Jordan Silk are the others, and their efforts all contributed to victories. Dean helped the Bushrangers take a giant stride towards doing likewise, setting the platform for what may yet become a mighty first-innings total in reply to the Redbacks’ reasonable, but now eminently reachable 340.SA took the second new ball with four overs remaining and Daniel Worrall, the day’s most outstanding bowler, soon curled a perfect inswinger through the defences of Matthew Wade. Nightwatchman Scott Boland survived numerous uncomfortable moments before the close, including a missed chance by Sam Raphael behind point, as another vocal Glenelg Oval crowd of 2,548 rode every delivery.Aided by a fluent Peter Handscomb, Dean absorbed plenty of pressure on a cool and overcast day that lent itself almost perfectly to seam and swing bowling. His technique stood up to more or less everything Chadd Sayers, Joe Mennie and Daniel Worrall hurled at him, and it was not until the final hour that Elliot Opie was able to coax him into an edge.Dean’s occupation thwarted a bowling attack that had carried much before them this season, and highlighted the trouble with choosing four seamers on a pitch that has offered some movement but is also drying into something where a spinner can prosper. SA’s captain Travis Head was left to bowl his offbreaks a little more than he might have preferred, with Adam Zampa in India and Tom Andrews, the left-arm spinner, missing out on the final XI.The final two South Australian wickets had added only 15 on resumption, giving Sayers and company the chance to defend a greater tally than many they had successfully followed up on over the course of the season. Rob Quiney was able to get off to a swift start as several Sayers deliveries swerved towards his hip. But after those early boundaries, it was a challenging time for batsmen.Quiney succumbed when he guided Worrall low to Raphael at gully, and Marcus Stoinis was beaten first ball. Plenty of questions were asked by the bowlers, and Dean needed all his technical skill to answer them. He achieved one small victory by prompting Worrall to try a short-pitched attack, but Stoinis was unable to endure, judged by umpire Paul Wilson to have gloved a bouncer to Alex Carey behind the stumps.Handscomb’s beginning was somewhat skittish, and he survived one vehement lbw appeal from Sayers. But he showed an inclination to get the scoreboard moving more regularly, and eased the pressure on Dean by putting some back onto SA’s seamers. Gradually, some of the Redbacks’ earlier discipline wavered, and Dean was able to pick off a few more loose balls. The partnership gathered momentum after tea, as SA became increasingly fretful for a wicket. Words were exchanged between Handscomb and Head when SA’s captain fielded off his bowling and fired a throw back towards the stumps, which the batsman swatted away to the boundary by way of self-preservation. The Redbacks appealed for obstructing the field, and after some consultation between the umpires, were turned down.Dean’s well-deserved century arrived soon after, not only making some Shield final history, but also breaking a recent sequence of lean scores – 9, 11, 1, 4 and 0 before this innings. An emotional celebration was follow by further occupation, but on 111, Opie was able to find a crack in the wall to break the stand at 140. That wicket gave SA an opening, and the loss of Wade before the close left the match delicately balanced once more.
