Stoneman misses out but Durham well placed

Mark Stoneman made 96 and, although his team missed out on a second batting point, Durham’s seamers claimed three Sussex wickets before the close

It is hard to think now that Durham were a popular choice as relegation candidates before the season began and at a disadvantage from the outset, having been docked two-and-a-half points for breaching the terms of the salary cap. Now it would surprise many of their doubters if they failed to win the title. With a game in hand on Yorkshire, whom they trailed by five-and-a-half points after their victory at Scarborough last week, they are favourites with the bookmakers, although the final few weeks threaten to be anything but straightforward. This is the first of two matches against Sussex, who themselves are not out of the running yet, despite their oddly conservative performance against Warwickshire last week. Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, who provide their other opponents, are both battling for survival.Durham missed out on a second batting point here, which may or may not prove costly during the next three and a half weeks, when Graham Onions was persuaded by James Anyon bowling three short balls in a row to attempt a pull and paid the price, the ball looping to Will Beer at midwicket. It was a rash stroke, yet if 245 seemed a little below par – which it is, on the basis that the average first-innings score here this season has been 281 – it was worth bearing in mind that Durham had batted first in all six home matches before this one and always had a first-innings lead. They have some handicaps in this match. Ben Stokes, who has been in outstanding form with bat and ball, is on England duty, while Mark Wood and James Harrison have joined Callum Thorp among those injured. They have had to recall Mitch Claydon, who has already agreed to join Kent next season, from his loan spell at Canterbury in order to reinforce their seam attack. It is just as well that Onions, missing for the last three weeks, has recovered from his broken finger. He took a little time to find his rhythm, understandably, but still managed to have Chris Nash caught at slip and trap Michael Yardy leg-before and Sussex may feel they might have been in much worse shape than 60 for 3 overnight. They also lost Joe Gatting, bowled by Claydon, while Luke Wells was dropped behind the stumps before he had scored as Chris Rushworth delivered a testing spell from the Lumley End.Not for the first time this year, a solid chunk of Durham’s total was supplied by Mark Stoneman, who has a chance to top 1000 first-class runs in a season for the first time, which would be appropriate reward for a year that has seen the elegant opener make a real breakthrough. It has been a long time coming, but Durham always knew, somehow, that their patience with Stoneman would be worth it in the end. They must be pretty pleased now that they didn’t give up during the barren four years between his first Championship century, in his debut season in 2007, and his second, or the 15 months that came and went between his second and his third. His slow progress was a surprise, given the team-mates he has had as close-hand role models, among them Michael di Venuto, Dale Benkenstein, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ian Blackwell. Sometimes, though, to play in heavyweight company can be an inhibiting factor and this seems to have been the case with Stoneman, now 26, who has acquired seniority of a kind after the retirements of Di Venuto and Blackwell and with Benkenstein sidelined by long-term injury. He did not start this season especially well. In his first five innings, he made it into double figures only once, but then came a second-innings hundred against Yorkshire in April, since when he has found a remarkably consistent level, passing fifty nine times in 18 innings. He has had three hundreds – two against Yorkshire, after his 122 at Scarborough – and looked set for a fourth here until, on 96, he was bowled by Lewis Hatchett, the ball taking out his leg stump via an inside edge. Given that he had been dropped in the slips on 44– by a nervous debutant, Harry Finch – the extra 52 runs were arguably a slightly undeserved bonus, but on the balance of quality over the piece he could hardly have been begrudged another ton.Stoneman was the first victim in a spell of three wickets for five runs in 19 balls by Hatchett, whose contract is up this autumn. He brought one back to have Paul Collingwood leg-before and produced a fine delivery to square up Phil Mustard, who was caught at second slip. The left-armer was outshone, though not by Anyon, who took four wickets, but by Steve Magoffin, whose three took him to 57 in this season’s Championship. The Australian seamer was still swinging the ball deep into the innings. If his usual partner, Chris Jordan, had been available, Durham might have struggled still more.As it was, even though Scott Borthwick, their other breakthrough performer with the bat, failed on this occasion, support for Stoneman from Will Smith, Michael Richardson and Usman Arshad, who batted nicely for his 30, gave them a total that, on the initial evidence, can be the basis for another lead.

Super Kings look to turn focus back on cricket

Chennai Super Kings’ line-up is one of the strongest around in T20 cricket, but they come into the Champions League T20 with off-field controversy hanging heavily about them

Nikita Bastian20-Sep-2013

Will this be the last tournament Super Kings’ intimidating squad plays together?•BCCI

Overview
Chennai Super Kings finished runners-up in IPL 2013, having lost to Mumbai Indians in the final. They might not be the current IPL champions, but they have consistently been the team to beat in the competition. Five times in six IPLs they’ve made the final, they’ve won the title twice – in 2010 and 2011 – and took home the Champions League T20 title in 2010.The team comes into this tournament with off-field controversy hanging heavily about them. News of one of their top officials Gurunath Meiyappan being arrested for alleged betting – which is illegal in India – broke a week before the IPL 2013 final, and he has been chargesheeted on the eve of the team’s first CLT20 game*. Gurunath is the son-in-law of BCCI president N Srinivasan, and his arrest raked up the longstanding conflict of interest questions over the board president also being managing director of the company – India Cements – that owns Super Kings. MS Dhoni too had conflict of interest queries thrown his way, after it was learnt he temporarily owned shares in a player-management company that looked after the financial interests of his India and Super Kings’ team-mates, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja. On the upside, Super Kings’ line-up is one of the strongest around in T20 cricket. They have ever-dependable batsmen in Michael Hussey and S Badrinath, big-hitters in Dwayne Bravo and Albie Morkel, and a combination of the two in Dhoni and Raina. Hussey and Bravo topped the batting and bowling charts in IPL 2013. In the spin department they have India’s leading spinner across formats, R Ashwin, and the current No. 1 bowler in ODI cricket, Jadeja. Previously, pace bowling was a bit of a weakness, but they beefed up their attack in the lead-up to IPL 2013, signing lesser known but testing bowlers Chris Morris, Jason Holder and Mohit Sharma.Super Kings will be keen on doing well for another reason. They have had by far the most settled squad in the IPL – Dhoni, Raina, Hussey, Ashwin, Morkel and Badrinath, among others, have all been with the franchise since its inception in 2008. In February, the squad – or most of it – is likely to be disbanded; as per the IPL regulations all players are supposed to go back into the auction in 2014. Given the possibility of this being the last tournament this bunch plays together, and the camaraderie that has built up over the seasons, they’ll be eager to end on a high.Super Kings will not play any matches at home, at Chepauk, but that’s not to say they won’t be treated like the home team: three of their four group games will be in Ranchi, Dhoni’s hometown.Key players
As they have been for years now, MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and R Ashwin will be the cornerstones on which Super Kings’ campaign is built. Dhoni’s stats for Super Kings are solid – he has 2488 runs at a strike-rate nudging 140, and only two ducks in 97 innings for the team – but it is his temperament that is most prized. How many times has he “taken it late” and, despite it getting to a point when the chase seems beyond the team, delivered with an almost unnatural calm? Suresh Raina is the only player to have featured in every single one of his IPL franchise’s games so far, scoring 3189 runs in 113 matches, while R Ashwin’s economy rate of 6.53 is the best among all IPL bowlers who’ve sent down 150 overs or more for one franchise.Surprise package
Given Super Kings’ line-up has remained largely the same over the seasons, the team rarely fields untested performers. In IPL 2013, though, they did have two new faces: pace bowlers Mohit Sharma and Chris Morris. Both proved to be highly effective and featured regularly in the eleven, and have since gone on to represent their countries in ODIs. Mohit was even named Man of the Match on international debut.Weakness
It’s hard to pinpoint on-field weaknesses in Super Kings’ line-up. Their biggest challenge could be putting the off-field controversies that have recently plagued the franchise out of their minds. Following their deflated showing in the IPL 2013 final, coach Stephen Fleming said the team had “been through a lot and didn’t respond well”. They’ve had more than enough time for the initial shock of Gurunath’s arrest to wear off, but the controversy still rages on. They can’t afford to let it distract them once again.*12.30GMT, September 21: The preview has been updated after Gurunath Meiyappan was chargesheeted

'I knew there will be a time when the runs will flow' – Rohit

A mature Rohit Sharma talks of how he tackled a disciplined West Indies bowling attack on a tricky Kolkata pitch

Sidharth Monga at Eden Gardens07-Nov-2013

Rohit Sharma when asked to rate his ODI double century against his ton on Test debut: “Both these innings are very close to my heart. Let’s hope that we can get into a good position tomorrow, and then I’d be more happy.”•BCCI

In less than a week, Rohit Sharma has joined most of India’s batting elite. On Saturday in Bangalore, he said hello to Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag in the ODI double-century club, hitting 16 sixes in the innings.Five days later, in Kolkata, he took 165 deliveries before he even lofted the ball in the air, and joined Sourav Ganguly, Sehwag, Gundappa Vishwanath, Mohammad Azharuddin and recently Shikhar Dhawan as those with a century on Test debut. What makes this innings really special is that he has been yearning for the chance in Tests for a few years now, coming close – he was once listed to play in 2010 but injured himself moments before the toss – but not getting to put that white India shirt on. However, he couldn’t say what satisfied him more: the Bangalore double or this century on debut when India were struggling at 82 for 4 in response to West Indies’ 234.”I cannot really say,” Rohit said. “That was a 200, really special. And this is even more special because it’s a Test hundred on debut. See, anywhere you get a hundred, it’s very special. And on top of that if yourteam wins, that’s like the icing on the cake. We’ve got to wait another three days to see what happens in the game. Both these innings are very close to my heart. With that innings in Bangalore we won the series, and here… let’s hope that we can get into a good position tomorrow, and then I’d be more happy.”This has been an exceptional year for Rohit. He has led Mumbai Indians to the IPL and Champions League T20 titles, has transformed his career by opening in ODIs, and now has had a dream Test debut. Thistime last year he was licking his wounds from a disastrous ODI series in Sri Lanka, which somehow cost him the Test place that should have been his after the retirements of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. How did he turn thecorner?”Being a sportsman, there is a lot of inspiration to take from so many sportspersons from around the world,” Rohit said. “You look at Michael Hussey, he made his debut when he was 30. There are a lot of other cricketers who had to wait for their opportunity. I’m no different, I’m one of them. I knew once I got an opportunity, I’d try and make the most of it. I never wanted to put my head down, I believe that if you have the ability, the talent, if you know you can do it, there is no need to worry about anything.”There was this phase when things were not going my way. But I never put my head down, I just wanted to focus because I knew there will be a time when the runs will flow. I just waited, waited… kept working on my game veryhard. Yes, today I’m really happy with what’s happened.”This was not a freebie century from 400 from 4. Rohit had to fight hard for every single of his initial runs. India were struggling, the ball was turning, and West Indies were on top when Virat Kohli was the fifth man out. “See, they were bowling quite well when we lost five early wickets,” Rohit said. “We wanted to build partnerships then, but they were bowling very well so we just thought we’ve got to respect these bowlers who were bowling in tandem. The five-ten overs of Shillingford and the bowler at the other end were very important, so we just thought that we needed to stick there, and that once we get in, we can capitalise later when the bowlers get tired. That’s exactly what happened at the end of the day.”He spoke about the innings with the same maturity that he played it with. “They were varying their pace so when I and MS [Dhoni] were batting runs were not really coming so easily,” Rohit said. “So we just had a plan of negotiating these overs and as I said, we had to stick [to] whatever we’d decided and then capitalise when the day was coming to an end. I knew this exactly because the outfield here is very fast so you just need to play your normal cricket. After MS got out, me and Ashwin had a really good partnership. At Eden Gardens, if you just can manage those few initial overs, thereafter it becomes… I wouldn’t say easy but you get a lot of run-scoring opportunities.” And Rohit knows from personal experience. He made his first-class debut here and scored a century. He started captaining Mumbai Indians here, and won the IPL final here. The same maturity was evident when he was asked to talk about the earlier near-misses. “Whenever it happens, you’ve got to be proud, you’ve got to take that,” Rohit said. “I was really disappointed with what happened in2010, but now I just wanted to focus on what was happening at the moment, so my focus was on this Test match, and I was really happy.Whether it came after three years, it doesn’t matter. Finally, it came. So I’m really happy. I was really happy yesterday, and obviously on this magnificent day today, I’m happier. But it’s not done, we’ve got a game onour hands. So we just need to be focused. Tomorrow would be another crucial day. If we can bat till about lunch, maybe a few more overs after lunch, we can get some good lead and try and put them under pressure.”

Johnson sparks England's Gabba nightmare

Australia vigorously protected their long unbeaten record at the Gabba on the second afternoon of the first Test as their bowlers ran rampant to dismiss England for 136

England run into impressive Johnson

Australia’s sense of invulnerability at the Gabba has been underlined for a quarter of a century. It is the ground at which they feel all things are possible, all ailments can be cured. But even Australia, vigorously rediscovering their belief on the ground where they have long reigned supreme, must have reflected that England’s traumatised batting provided a helping handEngland’s ability to micro-manage every aspect of their preparation has been well chronicled, but they have yet to fathom why their batsmen repeatedly perform so inadequately at the start of overseas series. Once again, they succumbed according to tradition, in perfectly good batting conditions, too, as Australia wrested a first-innings lead of 159 that at the start of the day must have been beyond their wildest dreams. If Australia’s batting was flaky, England’s calamitous afternoon was something to behold. Six England wickets fell after lunch for nine runs in a startling 58-ball phase as Australia, who were seemingly under pressure after lodging a none-too-impressive 295 on first innings, inspired a feverish response from a Brisbane crowd suddenly convinced that they can claim victory in the opening Test. This Ashes series is well and truly alive. The opposite may have been intimated 24 hours ago. It is good news for those hoping for a compelling series. In Ryan Harris, Australia have a bullish fast bowler full of late-career wisdom, capable if his fitness holds of troubling England throughout the series; his 3 for 28 dried up England like a desert wind. In Mitchell Johnson, currently sporting a Movember moustache that gives him the look of an Italian artist, they have a flighty fast-bowling talent who is no longer living on the dark side of the moon; four wickets and plenty of hostility testified to that.England made only 39 runs in the session: the nine runs they scrambled from fourth to eighth wicket down representing their second-lowest return, outdone only by the six runs they scored against West Indies in 1954. Beyond Michael Carberry’s 40, a sound innings which ran out of steam, and a few late blows by Stuart Broad, they could show little of merit. The last time Australia lost at the Gabba was against a fearsome West Indies pace attack 25 years ago, when Brisbane was still not much more than a sub-tropical outpost rather than the cosmopolitan river city it is today, and they defended that record with passion as the first Test swung dramatically in their favour.Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott were dismissed before lunch. Cook built his Ashes reputation in Brisbane three years ago. He made more than 300 runs in the match and England’s second-innings score of 517 for 1, the harbinger of their series victory, remains seared in Australia’s consciousness. There was to be no great statement, though, for England’s captain on his return as he edged a challenging delivery around off stump from Harris to the wicketkeeper.Mitchell Johnson took 4 for 61 to leave England reeling•Getty Images

Johnson was brought back to test Trott against the short stuff, just as Broad had been lined up for Michael Clarke on the first day. It gave him a simple purpose and with that purpose came a self-belief that was lacking in a ropey new-ball spell. Trott was immediately struck on the glove by a searing short ball, his imperturbable expression just holding. Australia squeezed in another over for Johnson before lunch and it paid off as Trott, getting across his stumps in anticipation of another short one, glanced a relatively nondescript delivery to the wicketkeeper Brad Haddin. There was no joy in his 100th Test for Kevin Pietersen, who batted with more composure than most for an hour but was controlled by Australia’s persistent line about six inches outside off stump and eventually clipped Harris to short midwicket. Pietersen had earlier been dropped on 8, a return catch to Peter Siddle, who adopted the brace position too early.Pietersen’s departure was the start of a calamitous collapse. Carberry had batted with great discernment in only his second Test, at 33 years of age, leaving much outside off stump and picking the ball off his pads, but he made only a single from his last 39 balls as his strokeplay dried as the sight of England wickets falling loaded up his responsibilities. Johnson went round the wicket to have him caught at slip on 40, accentuating the feeling that Australia’s plans were coming together.Carberry might also have been run out on the same score when he bounced his bat carelessly into the crease and only just made his ground, with some Australia fielders incensed that the umpires did not turn to the TV umpire for confirmation.Ian Bell and Matt Prior then fell in consecutive balls, both caught at short leg off the offspinner Nathan Lyon. Bell was undone by a bit of extra bounce, Prior by an inside edge on to his pad which required an Australian review to overturn umpire Aleem Dar’s decision. Australia were even getting their reviews right.Worse was to follow in the next over when Joe Root’s brief and nervy innings ended with a push at a fullish delivery from Johnson and the third catch in nine balls for Steve Smith, this time at third slip. Even then the agony was not over for England as Graeme Swann was caught at short leg off an inside edge, bringing Johnson his fourth wicket. HBroad mustered a few lusty blows after tea as England at least avoided the ignominy of the follow-on, but when Broad fell at deep midwicket attempting to pull Siddle, there were no doubts about Australia’s sizeable advantageEarlier, Haddin was run out six runs short of what would have been a thoroughly deserved Ashes hundred – he said afterwards he regarded the innings among his best – as England required only 7.1 overs to wrap up Australia’s first innings. Haddin fell attempting a second run into the off side, with Australia’s last pair together. Carberry’s retrieval was slick and Prior did the rest by collecting an awkward take and breaking the stumps.Broad, who had 5 for 65 overnight, struck with the sixth ball of his second over as Harris, intending to leave a length delivery, only managed to guide it to the wicketkeeper. Broad walked off with 6 for 81 to some full-throated boos. Australia’s total seemed shy, but that reckoned without the energising effect of Brisbane on an Australian bowling attack and the fallibility of an England batting side – an England side, too, troubled by a bad-weather build-up – when battle has only just been joined.
