Don't mention the Ashes

ESPNcricinfo previews the first one-day international between England and Australia

Match FactsFriday, June 29, 2012
Start time 1045 (0945 GMT)The Big PictureThe fact that this series is taking place at all speaks volumes for England’s new priorities. Having won the World Twenty20 and moved to the top of the Test rankings, they are now targeting a global ODI trophy as one of their top priorities. While there is no diminution in their Test ambitions in particular, so deep is their desire to win the 2015 World Cup (or, to a slightly lesser extent, the 2013 Champions Trophy) that the ECB scheduled this five-match ODI series ahead of adding another Test to the much-anticipated series between England and South Africa. In return, the ECB secured a five-match ODI series in Australia right before the 2015 World Cup, to be staged in Australia and New Zealand.England are an improving ODI team. Despite the humbling 5-0 reverse in India, England have won their last six ODI series at home and, despite the recent retirement of Kevin Pietersen, are building a solid side that, while lacking in explosive batsmen, possesses good quality players well capable of dealing with the introduction of two new balls. They also have an outstanding bowling attack and good depth in both batting and bowling.Australia, too, are in something of a transition in ODI cricket. Still ranked No. 1 in the world, they are introducing young players into the side – the likes of Matthew Wade and Pat Cummins – as they look to the future and 2015 in particular. This tour will provide several of their players with the opportunity of familiarising themselves with English conditions ahead of next year’s Ashes tour, while Australia A will also arrive in the UK shortly on a tour of their own.Despite some expressing a concern that this series and an over-familiarity between the sides could dilute the special atmosphere of an Ashes series, Lord’s is anticipating a full house. While there is no great prize for victory, it will provide some indication of the strengths and weaknesses of each side.Form guideEngland WWWWW (Most recent first, abandonments excluded)
Australia WLTLWPlayers to watchProspects are looking up for Ian Bell. Dropped from the ODI side over the winter, Bell won a reprieve when Kevin Pietersen retired and enjoyed an excellent start in his new role as opening batsman against West Indies. This series provides tougher opposition but, if Bell bats with the class and positivity he displayed against West Indies, he will have cemented his position alongside Alastair Cook at the top of the order. For most in England, this game will offer a first opportunity to see Pat Cummins in action. Just 19 years old, Cummins may be short of experience, but he has immense promise. Blessed with natural pace and an ability to swing the ball away from right-handers, he also appears to have remarkable control and maturity for one so young. Both captains have been at pains to insist that this series has no relevance to next year’s Ashes encounters, but it does seem safe to assume that Cummins will be making his first of many appearances at Lord’s. He has a bright future.Team newsEngland (probable) 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Ravi Bopara, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Craig Kieswetter, 7 Tim Bresnan, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Anderson, 11 Steve Finn.Australia (probable) 1 Shane Watson, 2 David Warner, 3 George Bailey, 4 Michael Clarke, 5 David Hussey, 6 Steven Smith, 7 Matthew Wade, 8 Brett Lee, 9 Clint McKay, 10 Pat Cummins, 11 Xavier Doherty.Pitch and conditionsThe forecast is not wonderful, with a 60% chance of rain and a noticeable drop in temperature anticipated. But Lord’s is remarkably fast draining and looks as immaculate as ever. The pitch is expected to be good, though totals of 300 or more have been achieved only four times in 52 ODIs on the ground. One of those came when Australia defeated Zimbabwe in 1999, another came in 1975, when England scored 334 in 60 overs against India and the two other occasions both occurred in the same match, when the batsmen of India and England enjoyed a fine pitch in 2002.Stats and trivia If England win the series 5-0, they will move to the top of the ODI rankings. That would make them the first team to top the rankings in all three formats of the game. England have won their last six ODIs and their last six home ODI series. The last two sides to tour England – India and West Indies – failed to win an international match on the trip. The last time these two sides played an ODI series, however, following the 2010-11 Ashes, Australia won 6-1. This is the last men’s game at Lord’s (there is a women’s T20I between England and India at the ground on Sunday) before the MCC hand over control of the ground to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) on Monday. They will not officially reclaim control of the ground until July 18, the day before the first Test against South Africa.Quotes”Our goal as an Australian cricket team is to be number one in the world in all three formats of the game.”
“If someone said do you want to be number one in the world or win the World Cup, I would take the World Cup.”

McCullum to open in India Tests

Brendon McCullum will return to the top of the order for New Zealand’s Tests against India, set to open with Martin Guptill after playing at first drop during the past two series

Brendon McCullum will return to the top of the order for New Zealand’s Tests against India, set to open with Martin Guptill after playing at first drop during the past two series. Daniel Flynn, BJ Watling and Rob Nicol were all given a chance to partner Guptill during New Zealand’s past two series, against South Africa and West Indies, but that won’t be the case this time around.”Martin Guptill and Brendon will open the innings,” the New Zealand captain Ross Taylor told reporters in India after the squad touched down ahead of the first Test, starting in Hyderabad on Thursday. “Brendon batted well here on previous occasions and, hopefully, he will continue in the same vein in the upcoming Tests.”McCullum’s highest Test score, 225, came on New Zealand’s most recent Test tour of India, during the Hyderabad Test of 2010-11. McCullum and his team-mates don’t have long to acclimatise to the conditions ahead of the first Test, but Taylor said the players were familiar enough with India that he was confident they could adjust quickly.”We would certainly like to put some good plans in place and be positive about the way we look to play. India is a familiar place for a lot of us,” he said. “We have played well here and are looking forward to the contest.”New Zealand are coming off a demoralising tour of the West Indies in which they lost the Tests and limited-overs legs comprehensively. They also lost 1-0 last time they visited India for Tests, but their bowlers at times left the Indian batting in positions of trouble, and their batting clicked, the highlights being McCullum’s double-century and a debut hundred by Kane Williamson.Harbhajan Singh rescued India from dicey positions in the series, scoring two centuries and a fifty. Taylor said the side would nevertheless take heart from that tour.”We hadn’t had bad memories the last time we played here. Brendon got 225. We had our opportunities but Harbhajan batted well and took the game away from us. However, it is a different time of the year, and hopefully, we will continue to play well.”Daniel Vettori, with 14 wickets, was the highest wicket-taker in the series. Taylor said his spinners would be keen to take advantage of the conditions. “They have a few spinners in their side and we don’t play lot of spinners back home,” he said. “It will be a good challenge and we are looking forward to put India under pressure.”He said India played well at home and his side would have to take that into account. “India is always tough in their home conditions. Whether they play north or down south they play very well. We should be careful about the reverse swing and the spinners. We have to learn quickly through the series.”The two-Test series will be followed by two T20Is in September as a prelude to the World T20.

England plot a way past South Africa's batsmen

It is a clash between two professional and well-drilled outfits that contains what could potentially be one of the contests of the tournament

By finishing second in Group A, England have been drawn against South Africa, winners of Group D, in the quarter-finals of the Under-19 World Cup in Townsville. It is a clash between two professional and well-drilled outfits that contains what could potentially be one of the contests of the tournament: England’s new-ball attack against South Africa’s openers. The majority of England’s players had the day off on Friday, after beating Nepal by 127 runs the day before, and spent it recuperating at their service apartments on Palmer Street: playing FIFA, watching bits of the Lord’s Test, staying out of the harsh sun and keeping off their feet as much as possible. Today, they’re back to practicing with sharpened focus. Tim Boon, their coach, said: “We’re as best prepared as we can be.”England have played South Africa before, in a seven-match home series they lost 2-4 in July last year. Only eight of those South Africans, however, are part of the World Cup squad so half of their outfit is not familiar to Adam Ball’s team. Someone they do know well is the opening batsman Quinton de Kock, who top scored with 341 runs in that series. “We felt if we could get him out early and expose that middle order as early as we could, we were right in there,” said Ball, England’s captain. “That will probably one of our main goals this time around and we will see how it goes.”De Kock is a threat once again. He enters the quarter-final as the World Cup’s leading run-scorer, 226 in three innings in Brisbane. His opening partner Chad Bowes is third on the list with 179 and they have been responsible for South Africa’s substantial batting success so far. In Reece Topley and Jamie Overton, however, England have two of the tallest and quickest bowlers in the World Cup, and they’ll be gunning for those South African scalps as early as possible.”Quinton de Kock had a good series against us but we know how he plays, so there won’t be any surprises there,” said Topley. “We’ve got good plans and we’ll attack him. We’ll attack most of the order to be honest.”Since that defeat to South Africa, England’s Under-19 cricketers have had a rigorous training programme at home, and toured Bangladesh and Australia. “I’d like to think so,” said Boon, when asked whether his players were significantly improved now. “Over the last two years quite a number of our guys have been getting international experience, which is what it is all about.”A “bombshell,” was how Boon described what his players were hit with when they entered theEngland Development Programme. “It’s a really tough regime. Just the work rates and the key learnings at 16-17, it’s a very intensive program at that age.”Ball said the focus of the system he’d been through was to produce “mentally tough players”. He said they’d learned the discipline required of a professional cricketer, the sacrifices that were necessary, and how they couldn’t “just go away and do what every other person does in their daily life.””We have had some very stressful times preparing for this,” Ball said. “We have been preparing for about two years now. That involves long periods up to 10 days at Loughborough, our centre of excellence. Very long days – waking up at 6am and leaving thecentre at about 8pm in the evening. So we have been put through the hard yards and now it’s come to the business time.”The business time didn’t begin well. After winning both warm-up games comfortably, England were sent in by Australia on a difficult batting wicket at Tony Ireland Stadium and dismissed for 143 in their first group match. “We learnt a lot of lessons in the game that we lost against Australia. There were some fundamental things that we didn’t do and that was just to occupy the crease and see the tough times out,” said Boon. “The toss made it tricky early doors, and I think we could have coped with that a little better. It provided us with another learning experience. Most of our players now have played and either got runs or had a decent bowl so everyone’s in a pretty good frame of mind.”In their next two games, England did occupy the crease, chasing 113 in 36.3 overs againstIreland with seven wickets in hand, and making 274 against Nepal. Ball saw room for more improvement. “I think making sure that we post big scores on the board for our bowlers to defend and then again, to chase down big scores,” he said. “We have shown signs that we can do it but we just need to keep developing that on a consistent basis.”One of their problems has been at the top of the order. Coming into the World Cup, Daniel Bell-Drummond had been tipped to be one of the batsmen to watch, but he’s managed only 31 runs in three innings. He began with a duck against Australia and finished the group stage with a hard-earned 23 against Nepal. Boon said it was a “question of time” before Bell-Drummond came right.”DBD [Bell-Drummond] is an exceptional player, an exceptional character,” said Boon. “He’s been in a rich vein of form, he’s scored runs [for Kent] against the senior South African team and to me it’s just a question of time before he comes right.”The quarter-final against South Africa could be Bell-Drummond’s last opportunity to show the world what he can do. Topley, however, is confident that it won’t be. He believes this class of England Under-19 has been groomed to successfully deal “with pressure situations such as Sunday”.

Third triple puts Jadeja in elite company

Ravindra Jadeja is the eighth batsman and first Indian to score three triple-centuries in first-class cricket

Haresh Pandya02-Dec-2012

Ravindra Jadeja has achieved distinction three days before his 24th birthday•AFP

Ravindra Jadeja is the eighth batsman and first Indian to score three triple-centuries in first-class cricket. He joined the illustrious company of WG Grace, Bill Ponsford, Don Bradman, Wally Hammond, Graeme Hick, Brian Lara and Michael Hussey. Jadeja is not yet 24.He reached his third triple on the second day of Saurashtra’s Ranji Trophy match against Railways in Rajkot. He was unbeaten on 320 at stumps, having batted 690 minutes in the first innings. Jadeja had begun this Ranji season in a blaze of glory, making an unbeaten 303, which spanned 561 minutes, against Gujarat in Surat. His first triple-hundred had come in November 2011, 314 in 558 minutes against Orissa in Cuttack. The third triple was laudable for its timing. Saurashtra, without Cheteshwar Pujara, had slipped to 90 for 4 after Jaydev Shah had decided to bat against Railways. Jadeja would have also been dismissed, on 19, had medium-pacer Krishnakant Upadhyay not floored a straightforward catch off his own bowling.Jadeja made the most of that reprieve. He found a partner in Shitanshu Kotak to first stabilise the innings and then give it respectability. Jadeja and Kotak complemented each other: the two left-hand batsmen, one full of exuberance and the other experience, ensured Railways did not have any further success on the first day. Saurashtra were 227 for 4 at stumps. Jadeja was on 111, Kotak 53.”As usual the wicket was playing very easy. But to stay at there and score runs, you had to show a lot of application and determination,” Kotak said. “After all, the Railways new-ball bowlers and spinners were really bowling well and keeping a good line and length. Jadeja handled them excellently and played a lovely innings.Having shown a tremendous appetite for runs this season, Jadeja batted on through the second day, converting his century into a double and then an unbeaten triple. Jadeja had another let-off, on 274, when he edged left-arm spinner Ashish Yadav but Sanjay Bangar could not catch a difficult chance at slip.”He has started showing so much maturity and this particular innings was the best example,” said Kotak, who was dismissed on 68 after adding 170 runs for the fifth wicket with Jadeja. “I was there at the other end for a very long time and I can tell you he batted with great responsibility. Never once did he appear careless or irresponsible. He was determined to play a big innings.”Kotak said Jadeja’s form would make the selectors take notice when they pick the limited-overs squads for the Twenty20 and ODI series against England in December and January. “You can’t ignore such performances. Jadeja is very young. He has not only batted well and scored lots of runs this season, but also taken plenty of wickets as a left-arm spinner. So the selectors should seriously consider him as an allrounder and give him another chance to prove his worth.”Debu Mitra, who has been Saurashtra’s coach for more than ten years, rated this triple-century higher than Jadeja’s previous two. “I’ve seen all the three triple-centuries scored by Jadeja. Though this one was played on a slightly batting-friendly pitch, it was easily the best because it was made when the bowlers were on top and Saurashtra were in trouble.”It was a fantastic innings. This is Group A, with some of the best teams. And Railways are no pushovers. I think almost right through the first day the Railways bowlers dominated the proceedings. You can see that from Saurashtra’s score, too – 227 for 4 in 90 overs. But Sunday belonged to Jadeja.”
