West Ham are looking to make a bid for defender Konstantinos Mavropanos, who is on loan at Stuttgart from fellow Premier League side Arsenal.
What’s the word?
German news outlet Kicker have reported that the Hammers are currently preparing to make a bid of £21m for the Greek defender, with his market valuation currently sitting at £15.3m.
However, Stuttgart appear to hold the upper hand when it comes to any possible transfer, as they could sign the player for just £2.5m due to a clause in his loan contract. This may mean that Arsenal will lose out on a massive transfer fee from West Ham for the centre back.
West Ham must move for Mavropanos
Mavropanos moved to Arsenal in 2018 from PAS Giannina for £1.89m but it hasn’t really worked out for him in north London, making just eight senior appearances in all competitions.
His spell at Stuttgart has been productive so far this season, playing 30 matches and scoring five goals as he looks to impress Mikel Arteta, but it looks like his Arsenal days may be completely behind him given this transfer news.
West Ham urgently need a central defender, with Angelo Ogbonna a long-term injury absentee, Kurt Zouma and Issa Diop also spending time on the treatment table, and Craig Dawson (32 next Friday) the only other natural option in that role.
Indeed, the Greek defender may well be an upgrade on the exit-linked Diop, having played 15 matches more than the Irons centre-back this season and registering an impressive 64 tackles compared to just nine for the Frenchman. Mavropanos is also competent at starting attacks from the back, completing 16 successful dribbles, whereas Diop hasn’t completed any so far this season.
These figures show the 24-year-old could be a significant upgrade for West Ham, and the “gladiator” – as his Stuttgart boss Pellegrino Matarazzo once called him – could be a tremendous coup if he joins the Hammers in the summer.

On a flat pitch that aided neither spin nor pace, India needed a spinner with a big of magic, but didn’t have one
ESPNcricinfo staff06-Nov-2010
Harbhajan Singh has a strike rate of 86.1 over the last 12 months•AFP
It might change character over the final two days, but so far the pitch hasn’t helped the spinners, it hasn’t helped the seamers, and the conditions weren’t conducive for reverse swing. There was turn, but it was slow. What it required, then, was a spinner who could produce a bit of magic.India’s leading spinner Harbhajan Singh hasn’t been in great form, though. It’s often been said by his critics – and there are quite a few of them – that he needs spin-friendly tracks to be really effective, like he showed in the Calcutta Test against South Africa in February. The last time he bowled superbly and consistently through a series, though, was not at home. It came in New Zealand in 2009. He got the ball to drift, turn, and bounce. He deployed over spin, side spin, and top spin and looked at the top of his game.A few months after that series, Daniel Vettori was asked to name the player he admired the most in the international scene. “I really enjoy watching Harbhajan Singh bowl. I think he’s my favourite bowler to watch in world cricket. I admire his skills and his repertoire, and he’s someone I always try to learn from whenever I see him bowl.”But it’s clear from the last 12 months that all is currently not well in Harbhajan’s world. Over that span, encompassing 10 Tests, he has averaged 42.47 at a strike rate of 86.1. In comparison, his career bowling average is 31.66 at a strike rate of 67.2. He rarely uses the doosra now; he perhaps didn’t bowl a single one in the series against Australia. He prefers the topspinner now. It is most puzzling. It’s tempting to use that to explain his decline, but even on that 2009 New Zealand tour he didn’t bowl many doosras. His bowling has lacked drift and bounce. He has been injured in the recent months and missed a few Tests. That could be a factor. His fans have pointed out that he is still the best spinner India has and he will overcome this dip in form.Throughout his career, Harbhajan has shown a tendency to push his deliveries on middle and leg on his bad days. That, though, hasn’t happened a lot in recent games. The lines have been better, the speeds have been relatively fine, but the lengths have suffered. Without a loop and dip, they often do. The result is that 42.84 average. Luckily for India, this has coincided with the rise of Zaheer Khan, who has been awesome with the old ball when it reverses. It didn’t today, and the New Zealanders marched along. The other spinner, Pragyan Ojha, averages 41.60. He is rarely used as a strike bowler and it’s clear that he doesn’t like one. He was quick to switch to over the stumps today – – perhaps because he was asked to by the team think tank. You could see why. There were rough patches outside leg stump and both McCullum and Ross Taylor like to sweep. Perhaps one would take the top edge? It didn’t, and he struck almost immediately on returning to bowling around the stumps with a beauty to remove McCullum. It dipped and turned to leave the batsman stranded. That’s the thing about Ojha that confounds. There were couple of deliveries today from the spinners that gripped, turned and bounced. All of them came from Ojha, though they seem to be exception rather than norm with him. His deliveries seem to land on a length and turn very slightly. It feels as if he doesn’t give them a good rip. It perhaps is the stock bowler in him dominating. Most probably, that’s his role.Ojha’s former Hyderabad bowling coach, Kanwaljit Singh, tells of a meeting with the bowler in what proved to be a turn-around game for him. “We [Kanwal and the captain VVS Laxman] told him, look you are our strike bowler. This is a wicket aiding spin and we are confident you can run through them. Show us you can.” Ojha took 6 for 84 and moved up a grade. Is what we see from him now at the international level his best, or is there a gear he has not tried yet? India might want to use him as their containing bowler, but that doesn’t mean he can’t attack at all. It would be good to know whether there is another gear to him at this level for Murali Kartik, who is clearly the better bowler, is still going strong at the county and domestic circuit. So far, the game has the look and feel of a draw. Even the usually ebullient Sreesanth didn’t sound upbeat.” It’s very flat track as usual in Ahmedabad. I worked very hard because it is not an easy track to bowl on, very slow track. We have to work very hard. I don’t think we could have done anything differently. Maybe we should have restricted a few more boundaries. It just happens – some days it clicks, some days it doesn’t. You have got to be patient. We will keep on giving our best shot.”Credit goes to their batsmen, they played well.” Of course, Sreesanth being Sreesanth, he couldn’t let it go at that. “I can’t wait to see the next game. I really want to see how they play on a turner; I think they are going to struggle.”

A big Newcastle United transfer claim has been made on their plans for the summer window…
What’s the talk?
Magpies journalist Mark Douglas has revealed the position that PIF are viewing as their biggest area of improvement ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
He Tweeted: “It’s a striker nufc want this summer as a ‘priority’.”
This comes after the Saudi Arabian consortium splashed the cash in the January window to sign Chris Wood, Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Matt Targett and Bruno Guimaraes. They are now looking to take the next step and a new number nine is the player they want to bring in to do that.
Eddie Howe will be delighted
The Toon head coach will be delighted with the club prioritising a new number nine as his squad is currently lacking a reliable and consistent striker to find the back of the net in the Premier League.
Callum Wilson scored 12 goals in the 2020/21 campaign and this tally means that you can argue that he is a consistent goalscorer in the top-flight as he hit double figures for the club. However, he has not been reliable in terms of his availability for selection as he started 23 matches that season and has started just 14 times in the current term.
Taking Wilson out of the equation, Allan Saint-Maximin is the club’s top scorer with five goals in the Premier League this season. Meanwhile, Wood – who joined from Burnley for £25m – has only found the back of the net twice in 15 outings in the black and white shirt.
He has not been able to make an instant impact since joining from the Clarets and no one else has stepped up, consistently, to carry the burden in the final third.
The lack of goalscoring quality in the squad is evident and that is why the head coach will be delighted with the prospect of being given a new player to work with next term. Although, the club will need to ensure that they are able to get the right one in as Wood’s dismal record in front of goal proves that paying a big transfer fee does not guarantee anything.
Howe will be keen to assess the potential options that the club can target this summer with the aim of landing the new goalscoring machine for the Toon army to enjoy. As such, it will now be interesting to see who PIF attempt to bring in over the coming months…

Gerald Majola, is expected to be “cleared of all charges” of financial impropriety at the associations board meeting on Friday

The bonuses paid to CSA chief executive Gerald Majola after the 2009 IPL were not out of the ordinary•AFP
Gerald Majola, chief executive of Cricket South Africa (CSA), is expected to be “cleared of all charges” of financial impropriety at the associations board meeting on Friday, a CSA insider told ESPNcricinfo. The body’s internal commission of inquiry, headed by CSA vice president AK Khan, that was looking into the bonus payments Majola received after last year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) in South Africa, found “no evidence of fraud against Majola,” according to the source. However, the methods of awarding bonuses to CSA staff members could face an overhaul after the committee presents its findings. “The questions of procedure and governance are totally different matters and what will probably happen now is that the board will put in rules in place over how bonuses should be paid out, so that everything is accounted for.”Majola and 39 other staff members were paid bonuses after the successful second season of the T20 tournament, but they did not go through CSA’s remunerations committee. This was picked up by CSA’s auditors Deloitte who reported irregularities in the body’s financial statements in August. CSA insiders said that nothing suspicious could be read into the payments because they were made according to a precedent for paying bonuses after major tournaments that was set at the 2003 World Cup.Also under the spotlight will be a report leaked to the Sunday Times newspaper, allegedly written by CSA president Doctor Mtutuzeli Nyoka, which accused Majola of other wrongdoings. The report alleged that besides questioning the bonus payments, Nyoka also claimed that Majola had used R318 238 (approximately US$ 45,462) in travel costs for his wife. The source expects Majola to be cleared on that charge as well. “I’ve heard as part his [Majola’s] contract that he is given a travel allowance for his family and I’ve also heard that the numbers involves in the costs have been greatly inflated.”The leaked report also brought to the fore what the insider claims is a “very strained relationship” between Majola and Nyoka. The two have been at loggerheads since Nyoka was Chairman of the Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) at the turn of the millennium. In 2002, Nyoka resigned from his post at the GCB after unsuccessfully challenging then United Cricket Board (UCB) president Percy Sonn for his position.Nyoka was also one of the loudest critics of the UCB’s pace of transformation and questioned the body’s commitment to developing players of colour. At the time, Nyoka was quoted as saying, “Gerald Majola must understand that his appointment was an affirmative action and others should be getting the same opportunities as him if transformation is going to work.”Nyoka returned to cricket in 2005, as chair of a 22-man steering committee that was set up to run the GCB. His role to assist in mediating between warring clubs who were up in arms over the lack of transformation in the province He was elected President of CSA in October 2008. The two have not had any public spats since then.CSA initially appointed an external commission, under Judge Pius Langa, to investigate the bonus payments but u-turned on their decision a few weeks later, opting to conduct the probe internally. At the time, ESPNcricinfo was told that the decision to make use of the Langa commission was made “unilaterally by a member of the CSA executive, who did not consult with the board”. When the board met on the August 21, they voted to shift the probe internally because they had “not exhausted all their own procedures.”The move resulted in CSA being criticised for a lack of transparency but the source said they took it upon themselves to ensure independence. “What will come out is that even though the commission was internal, CSA got an external person to run it. I can’t say who that person is but those details will emerge on Friday.”The board meeting will take place at 10am South African time at the OR Tambo International Airport.

Conditions during the third Test at Newlands are likely to favour batsmen•PA Photos
The third Test between South Africa and India will be played “on a good pitch that will last five days,” Evan Flint, the Newlands groundsman, told ESPNcricinfo. With the series level at one-all, the Cape Town Test, beginning on January 2, will be the decider in the three-match series.Newlands traditionally boasts a flat wicket that is batsman-friendly. It has the highest average score, 338.2, for any ground in the country that has hosted more than one Test. That’s close to 24 runs greater than the average score at next-highest run-scoring ground in South Africa, Kingsmead in Durban. Flint said the trend is set to continue. “The pitch won’t change too much from previous years.” It will come as welcome news to the batsmen from both camps, who have had a tough time adjusting to the conditions in the previous two Tests. Both the Centurion and Durban tracks were lively surfaces that favoured the bowlers initially. The track at SuperSport Park flattened as the sun came out and became excellent for batting. The surface at Kingsmead also became better for batting as the match wore on but there was something in it for the bowlers throughout. The conditions in Newlands will be vastly different.”I would love to get the same bounce as grounds like SuperSport Park and the Wanderers,” Flint said. “The type of bounce we get is different; it’s more of a tennis-ball bounce.” Flint said his ground offered more of a traditional South African Test-match wicket that was good for batting, particularly on days two and three and turned in favour of the spinners on days four and five.Flint recognised that South Africa generally “want to get pace and bounce” out of their pitches at home and said he was aware of the home team’s desire to exploit their own conditions. “I would like to create a surface that South Africa can get a good result on, but I’ve just got to do the best I can, and hopefully South Africa can play to their strengths.”There is still a bit of work to do on the surface because the weather has not, up to now, assisted Flint as much as he hoped it would. “It’s still not 100%, which is a little bit disappointing. It’s been very windy and quite cloudy; a bit cooler than usual, but we still need another really good day of sun.” Some showers are forecast for New Year’s Day but sunshine is expected to dominate the Test.Newlands is a fortress for South Africa, where they have won 14 out of 21 Tests since readmission and lost just three, all against Australia. South Africa have beaten India twice in Cape Town, most recently in 2007. On that occasion, the match was also a series decider and South Africa’s victory allowed them to clinch the series 2-1.The one difference between the 2007 match and this one is that three years ago, South Africa went into the game having won the Boxing Day Test after losing the first Test. This season, the opposite has happened. South Africa are under pressure to bounce back after the defeat in Durban, while India are coming off a confidence-boosting win. The stage is set for a grand finale and, fittingly, the first day of the Test match is sold out.
