Phil Hay reveals Leeds injury boost

Leeds United have received a timely injury boost ahead of their return to Premier League action next week…

What’s the latest?

As revealed by The Athletic’s Phil Hay in his latest column, Adam Forshaw has seemingly returned to first-team training, where he took part in Marcelo Bielsa’s intense preparations, including the infamous ‘murderball’.

‘The last Sunday of the transfer window was a typical day at Leeds United: a late-morning session of murderball featuring the usual suspects. Adam Forshaw took part, testing his injured hamstring, but a search for new faces out on the grass drew a blank,’ he wrote.

The 30-year-0ld midfielder picked up a problem just 22 minutes into their 3-2 win over West Ham United in the top-flight before the break. Soon after providing the assist for Jack Harrison’s opener – his first of three goals that day – the long-serving star had to be withdrawn, adding to Bielsa’s injury woes.

Huge boost

When the word injury is bounded about alongside Forshaw’s name, there is certainly worry as the former Boro man has endured his fair share of nightmarish issues over the years at Elland Road.

But since his return to the side, he has been a real bright spark, even more so in the absence of fellow midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who is currently recovering from hamstring surgery and isn’t likely to be back for another month yet.

His amazing comeback has been nothing short of remarkable and that sort of progress has been highlighted by Bielsa this year.

“It is very difficult for me to refer myself to Forshaw, in this moment where he’s given such a valuable response, because I didn’t think Forshaw was going to be the player he was once before,” he told the official website. He later added:

“The club will make a very convenient decision if they extended Forshaw because every week he’s showing he’s a player of a very good level.”

Indeed, the veteran has since been rewarded with a new contract extension. He ranks joint-second amongst the squad for tackles (2.3 per game) and is one of their more accomplished passers, averaging a pass accuracy of 83%, which is actually slightly better than Phillips, via WhoScored.

According to The Athletic, Bielsa has claimed that Forshaw has the ‘right attributes’ for a Champions League side behind the scenes – a rather glowing endorsement of just how influential the midfielder is.

Therefore, the Argentine will be absolutely buzzing to have him available heading into their clash with Aston Villa in a week’s time.

AND in other news, Bielsa could now solve Leeds’ midfield woes with rarely-seen “gifted” 19 y/o prodigy…

Tri-series is a step in Zimbabwe's development

After the carnival of the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean, a one-day tri-series in Zimbabwe may not seem like the sort of fare to whet the appetite, but India and Sri Lanka’s trip to the Southern African nation is an important sounding board for all three

After the carnival of the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean, a one-day tri-series in Zimbabwe may not seem like the sort of fare to whet the appetite, but India and Sri Lanka’s trip to the Southern African nation is an important sounding board for all three teams. The reasons for this are manifold. For a start, the 50-over World Cup is just over nine months away, and after India’s lacklustre showing at the World Twenty20, the performance of their squad for this series – with a number of big names not making the trip – will be a test of India’s bench strength and may also unearth the potential of some of the less experienced players. Should this squad perform beyond expectations, it may also be just the reality check needed to get India’s heavyweights performing again.Sri Lanka made it as far as the semi-finals of the World Twenty20, but that they got there at all was almost entirely due to Mahela Jayawardene’s sparkling early-tournament form. But with Sri Lanka also resting a slew of their frontline players, they too have the opportunity to test the depth of their resources and allow a few youngsters the opportunity to gain international experience in what should be fairly easy conditions. The fact that so many known international stars are not making the trip has irked more than a few people in the Zimbabwe set-up, but while there are worries about how much local attention tours by two second-string sides might draw, Zimbabwe must surely also be looking ahead to the World Cup and a couple of positive results in this series could only help their attempt at a cricketing renaissance. Zimbabwe also need all the exposure they can get, and with a paucity of international cricket on their calendar, this series may be their last chance to really test themselves ahead of the tournament in February next year. But the issue of most immediate importance is Zimbabwe’s first hosting of a series against major opposition since the last time Sri Lanka toured the country in November 2008. Since then, the only senior sides to visit have been Kenya, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, and although the Zimbabweans have travelled to South Africa and the West Indies – as well as the obligatory visits to Bangladesh and Kenya – and sent an invitational XI to play in the Deodhar Trophy in India in 2008-09, the successful hosting of two international sides will send an important message both about the state of cricket there, and more importantly about the state of the country. In both areas, there has been little wholesale change, but positive steps are being made. Zimbabwe won the first Twenty20 and one-day game of their West Indies tour in March, and scored two notable victories against Pakistan and Australia in the warm-ups to the World Twenty20. Inbetween those successes, however, the team – and particularly the batsmen – have struggled.Zimbabwe’s early exit from the World Twenty20 came as a result of the frustrating, but far from unfamiliar, failure of the team’s batsmen to apply themselves when even a modicum of pressure is placed upon them. The weakness is a mental one, as batsmen who have been repeatedly brutalised by being thrust onto the international stage before their time have had their confidence fractured, perhaps irredeemably so. The spectacular collapse has become a default setting, rather than an aberration. In this light, six games (at least) against weakened opposition on home soil will be an opportunity for the home side’s batsmen to start pulling themselves out of the mire. The last time Sri Lanka toured they came away with a 5-0 series whitewash, but were at least challenged in a few of the games, scraping home by five runs and two wickets respectively in the third and fourth games, while only a five-wicket haul by Muttiah Muralitharan saved them from defeat in the fifth. This time, the touring side will be missing Murali’s guile, while Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara are also being rested. The last Indian side to tour the country was an A side in 2007. That team included players such as Pankaj Singh, Pragyan Ojha and Rohit Sharma, and Zimbabwe also have experience of players such as Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin from their Deodhar adventure. The last full Indian side was in the country in 2005-06, and is unrecognisable from this touring squad. It seems, then, that this tri-series may well be more competitive than many of Zimbabwe’s recent international outings. Whether the home side plays to its potential, or implodes spectacularly, remains to be seen. Either way, the first major international tour to Zimbabwe in 18 months is a step in the right direction.

Crook makes Johnstone to Spurs claim

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Alex Crook of talkSPORT has made a Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving West Bromwich Albion keeper Sam Johnstone.

The Lowdown: Paratici eyeing free deals…

Over the last few months, Spurs and transfer chief Fabio Paratici have set their sights on a few free agents as the Lilywhites managing director eyes ‘quality players at zero cost’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The likes of Franck Kessie and Jesse Lingard have recently been linked with a move to north London whilst Baggies ace Johnstone is a name who has been on the radar for a while.

His current deal is set to expire in 2022 as Spurs reportedly eye a move to sign him this summer.

The Latest: Crook makes Spurs claim…

Speaking to GMS, Crook explains that Johnstone is ‘definitely’ a summer target for Tottenham and manager Antonio Conte but admits the move could be complicated.

“He’s definitely on their list,” said the journalist.

“I think the problem with that is that I think if he was to go, he would want guaranteed first-team football. Obviously, Lloris has just extended his contract, so he’s not going to dislodge him immediately.”

The Verdict: Great competition…

While Hugo Lloris looks practically untouchable at the moment, Conte and Spurs will have to start thinking about his eventual successor at Tottenham.

The 35-year-old is nearing the twilight phase of his career and Johnstone could be a ready-made stand-in for future seasons – especially going by his praise in recent times.

Former West Brom boss Sam Allardyce called the 28-year-old ‘one of the best’ in his position whilst pundit Paddy Kenny believes he is ‘unreal’.

Johnstone’s form over this past year has even earned attention from England boss Gareth Southgate, who subsequently handed the player his first Three Lions call up last year.

A fully-fledged international for free certainly wouldn’t be bad business from Spurs’ perspective.

Misbah upset over being dropped for England tour

Pakistan batsman Misbah-ul-Haq is upset about his omission from the team’s forthcoming tour of England, saying his average in all forms of the game is better than most of the touring members

Misbah-ul-Haq feels his average pulls enough weight to merit selection•AFP

Pakistan batsman Misbah-ul-Haq is upset about his omission from the team’s forthcoming tour of England, saying his average in all forms of the game is better than most of the touring members. Pakistan had announced the squads which will face Australia in two Twenty20 matches and two Tests followed by four Tests and two Twenty20 matches against England. Misbah was left out of both squads.”It is very disappointing,” Misbah told . “You find yourself in the XI and suddenly you are not even in a preliminary squad of 35, it prompts you to burn all your cricket equipment in anger.”Misbah has been in and out of the selectors’ radar in the recent past. A loss of form through 2009 led to him being dropped, initially, for the tours of New Zealand and Australia. However, he was flown in midway through the New Zealand tour to shore up an inexperienced batting order. In the interim, he struck form in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in Pakistan and that prompted the then captain, Mohammad Yousuf, to push for his recall. He last played for Pakistan in the World Twenty20 in the West Indies and was dropped for the Asia Cup.The Pakistan selectors picked a fairly inexperienced Test squad for England, including new faces like Azhar Ali and Umar Amin. Misbah felt his experience would have been useful.”My Test average is 33, one-day is 39 and Twenty20 is 36, and if you compare it with other players it is better than many, so it makes you think what’s wrong with you,” said Misbah.Misbah was in fine form in the RBS Cup fifty-over tournament in Pakistan, leading the run charts with 490 runs at 163.33 and scoring a century in the final for Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited.”I am very disappointed because I was dropped last year as well and I came back through performing in domestic events, and then suddenly I found myself dropped again,” Misbah said.Besides Misbah, another experienced batsman Younis Khan, was also left out, due to fitness and disciplinary reasons. Misbah could be in the running for the one-day squad for the five-match series against England, which will be announced later.

PIF eyeing Newcastle deal for Franck Kessie

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in AC Milan tank Franck Kessie…

What’s the talk?

According to la Repubblica (via MilanNews), Barcelona, PSG, Liverpool and the Magpies are all eyeing a swoop for the Ivory Coast midfielder.

The report claims that he is unlikely to put pen to paper on a new contract with the Italian giants and this could open the door for European sides to swoop at the end of the campaign as he will be a free agent.

Masterclass

PIF could pull off a masterclass for Newcastle in the summer if they can land Kessie whilst paying £0 in transfer fees.

He could be a sensational signing for the club, particularly on a free transfer, as he has been sublime in Italy for Milan in recent seasons.

Former Italian international Antonio Cassano previously heaped praise on the midfield machine. Speaking to BoboTV, as transcribed by Milan Live, he said:

“I want Kessie in my team, he scores, he assists, he has personality, he has quality, he doesn’t lose the ball, he is intelligent.”

Cassano also dubbed him “devastating” and that is exactly what he could be for the Magpies. He has proven for Milan in the Serie A that he can be a monster at both ends of the pitch and that he can have a devastating impact on teams with his box-to-box play.

Last season, he produced 13 goals and four assists whilst also averaging 2.6 tackles and interceptions per game. This shows that he can be a big force for his side in defence and attack as he is capable of winning the ball back regularly and then can make things happen in the final third.

In the Serie A this term, he has scored five goals in 14 games and won 70 individual duels – winning 60% of his battles in the competition. He has also averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.12 as he has been able to deliver consistently brilliant performances for Milan, which suggests that he has the potential to do the same for Newcastle.

Therefore, PIF could pull off a masterclass by signing Kessie for nothing as he could come in and add an excellent midfield option for Eddie Howe to select.

His play in both boxes could make him a big asset at Premier League level and the ex-Bournemouth boss would surely love to have a player of Kessie’s pedigree at his disposal.

The £43.2m-rated gem would be an absolute bargain this summer.
