– Gosto do Fred, do Jô, Lucas Pratto, Lewandowski, Madzukic…

Lage reveals Adama latest

Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Adama Traoré is expected to travel with the squad for their upcoming Premier League fixture at Brentford, despite heavy interest from top-flight rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

What’s the latest?

Wolves manager Bruno Lage has revealed the latest information on Traoré’s future amid speculation of a move to north London, confirming: “My attention and focus is every time on the next game and I don’t think about if Adama stays with us or not. For now, he’s with us so I’m preparing the game with him.”

The Portuguese added: “We have a top player with us, a lovely guy. Sometimes it’s about business. I remember how much Tottenham protected Harry Kane at the beginning of the season.

“And we will protect our player because we believe a lot in Adama. That is business. It’s not my concern. But I will protect my players. The way they work, the value for me is very high.

“I don’t see any difference in his behaviour, his mentality, the way he works. So I’m happy with him. He continues to be the same player.

“He just has one more year left. The club talk with him and he talks with them and they will decide the future. I’m happy with him, it’s the only thing I can say. He’s focused, he’s ready.”

Wolves fans will be buzzing

Adama Traoré can be a Jekyll and Hyde at times but, ultimately, is a player Wolves should aim to keep this window. Granted, the Spaniard has previously been subject to criticism, notably being labelled “the worst five-a-side player you’ve ever seen” by former manager Tim Sherwood, but there is a reason a club as big as Tottenham are interested in the 25-year-old.

Traoré’s unique combination of significant pace and physicality makes him a nightmare to defend against, a major weapon in Wolves’ arsenal, particularly to introduce late in a game that is hanging in the balance.

Moreover, quality from out wide has been lacking at times for the West Midlands outfit this season. Lage’s side are the Premier League’s third-lowest scorers, despite sitting comfortably in eighth, with 17 goals in 20 games; the strength of their defence has proven to be a major contribution.

However, the balance of getting results through rarely scoring but keeping plenty of clean sheets surely can’t be sustainable and the Portuguese manager will have to find a solution for their goal-scoring woes, meaning that keeping all of his offensive players for the remainder of the season is a must.

Although the Spaniard has just one league goal so far this season, it is one more than fellow right-wingers Daniel Podence and Francisco Trincāo.

Furthermore, that league goal came last time out against Southampton, which could potentially act as a catalyst for a run of good form which would certainly make the Black Country club reluctant to sell Traoré this window.

It’s exactly why Lage’s update on Traore is sure to have Wolves fans buzzing.

Rangers must unleash "unbelievable" gem

Rangers will look to continue their unbeaten start to life under Gio van Bronckhorst as they prepare for Premiership action on Saturday.

The Gers face off against Ross County away from home in a lunchtime kick-off this weekend as they look to maintain or extend their lead at the top of the table, depending on how their Glasgow rivals get on in their match at 3pm.

Scott Arfield scored the only goal of the game as Rangers beat Livingston 1-0 in their last outing on Wednesday night, leaving them on 55 points after 22 games and four points clear of their nearest rivals.

Unleash him

One player who must be unleashed from the start on Saturday is new signing Amad Diallo. The youngster joined on loan from Manchester United this week and Van Bronckhorst has already confirmed that he is available for selection.

He said in Friday morning’s press conference: “Diallo will also be in the squad for tomorrow.

“Diallo is a young player who wants to play games, we are bringing him to our club to add value to our team. Like any other player in the squad, he has to perform to play but I am full of confidence that he will deliver.”

Instead of using him off the bench, the Dutchman must throw him in from the start in order to axe Scott Wright from the starting XI. The ex-Aberdeen man was poor against Livingston as he regularly wasted the ball in the final third, completing 0% of his dribbles and 25% of his attempted crosses.

Diallo coming in could allow Van Bronckhorst to drop Wright for this match against Ross County, with the Ivorian having the potential to be a game-changer for the Gers – that is why he must start.

Former Manchester United winger Dan James previously lauded his then-teammate as “unbelievable”, while Papu Gomez, another who played alongside the 19-year-old, once compared him to a current PSG forward, saying: “There are defenders in the first team that sometimes cannot stop him. To stop him in training, we have to kick him! He plays like Messi.”

This highlights the technical quality of the £28k-per-week Ibrox gem, which is backed up by his exceptional record at youth level. He scored six goals and provided four assists in just five games for United’s under-23s, having managed 37 goals and 24 assists in 96 appearances for Atalanta’s youth teams.

Diallo also scored once and produced one assist in nine first-team matches for the Red Devils, showing promise at the top level. This suggests that he has the potential to come in at Rangers and be a big player for Van Bronckhorst, and that could start with him being named in the starting XI against Ross County on Saturday…

Sri Lanka look to go one step further

A core of match-winners supported by upcoming youngsters make Sri Lanka a formidable opponent

Siddarth Ravindran29-Apr-2010OverviewMahela Jayawardene will be the lynchpin of the Sri Lankan top order•AFP

Sri Lanka have experimented with their limited-overs combination over the past year, but the core of the squad remains the same as the one that Kumar Sangakkara nearly took to glory in his maiden captaincy assignment at the 2009 World Twenty20.Several promising allrounders have come along to back up the old guard, the most exciting of whom is Angelo Mathews, who has become a national regular in the shorter formats. Then there is the duo who impressed in the nearly forgotten ODI tri-series against India and Bangladesh early this year – offspinning allrounder Suraj Randiv, who Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss picked as his side’s best slow bowler in the tournament, and Thissara Perera, who showed his hitting skills and temperament during a stiff chase against India. The wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Chandimal also makes the squad on the basis of a strong showing in the domestic Twenty20 tournament, where he was the leading run-getter.Only a handful of Sri Lankan players were regulars for their IPL sides, which means most of the squad will be well-rested going into the Caribbean competition. They are grouped with a tough New Zealand side and a Zimbabwe outfit whose recent tour of the West Indies makes them one of the better-prepared teams in the tournament.Twenty20 pedigreeSri Lanka were virtually unstoppable in England during the previous World Twenty20, sweeping all before them to reach the finals unbeaten, but have had a rough time since, losing four of their past five matches. Like in the final against Pakistan last year, their top-order buckled in a winner-take-all Super Eights match against Australia in 2007, which led to their early elimination. Overall, they have a solid Twenty20 record, with a winning percentage only behind Pakistan and South Africa among the Test nations.Strengths and weaknessesThe side is littered with match-winners, both with bat and ball. Their top three of Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene and Sangakkara match the best in the world, and their bowling is full of unorthodox and dangerous operators, including Lasith Malinga, Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis. One worry is that the supporting players to this bunch are generally inexperienced and have yet to prove themselves in a pressure-cooker tournament like the World Twenty20. The other concern is that Sri Lanka’s fielding standards don’t match the benchmark set by the likes of Australia and South Africa.Key menMahela Jayawardene has been confirmed as the opening partner to Tillakaratne Dilshan, who lit up the 2009 World Twenty20 with his inventive strokeplay. Dilshan is coming off a lukewarm spell with Delhi Daredevils, and captain Sangakkara didn’t hit the heights in either the IPL or the domestic Twenty20 competition. That increases the responsibility on Jayawardene, who showed during the second half of the IPL that classical shot-making doesn’t rule out scoring at Twenty20 pace.Lasith Malinga was among the best fast bowlers on display in the IPL: the unconventional action, the ability to bowl yorkers at will and a mix of slow bouncers and slow full tosses unnerved batsmen and was instrumental in taking Mumbai Indians to the top of the league. He hasn’t played for Sri Lanka this year, and will make his comeback at Providence, the scene of his finest moment – the unprecedented four-in-four against South Africa in the 2007 World Cup.X-factorIn a Sri Lankan team where most of the big names are specialists, Angelo Mathews is multi-skilled, one of the reasons he was an automatic pick for Kolkata Knight Riders in every match this season, where Twenty20 specialists Brad Hodge struggled to hold down a place. He shot into prominence with an outstanding bit of fielding at last year’s World Twenty20, since when he has added steel to Sri Lanka’s lower middle order and capably filled in the fifth bowler’s slot.Vital stats Sri Lanka still hold the record for highest total in a Twenty20 international, when they stacked up 260 on their way to pulverizing Kenya by 172 runs in 2007. Ajantha Mendis’ international career may be suffering from sophomore syndrome, but his Twenty20 figures still make for stunning reading: 25 wickets at the world-beating average of 9.76, economy-rate of 5.30, strike-rate of 11.0

Bell and Rankin lead Warks to victory

A round-up of the Clydesdale Bank 40 games between Hampshire and Warwickshire at Southampton, and Middlesex and Gloucestershire at Lord’s

16-May-2010Ian Bell’s fourth Clydesdale Bank 40 half-century of the season maintained Warwickshire’s 100% record with a convincing six-wicket victory over Kent at Edgbaston. The England batsman contributed a stylish 55 from 71 balls before the Group C leaders – unbeaten in 40-over cricket since August 2008 – wrapped up their fifth straight win in the competition. The margin would have been greater but for a substantial Kent recovery after 6ft 8in pace bowler Boyd Rankin had taken three wickets in five balls in their collapse to 73 for 7 after 19 overs.Scotland produced a stunning performance to send Leicestershire crashing to a four-wicket defeat in a nail-biting finish at Grace Road.Chasing a victory target of 218 the Saltires reached it with two balls to spare, helped by half-centuries from George Bailey and Richie Berrington. But it was Neil McCallum who clinched the victory for the Saltires in their opening game of the campaign, hitting 27 off 19 balls with two boundaries plus a massive six off Matthew Hoggard’s final ball of the 39th overStephen Moore returned to haunt his former county by hitting an undefeated century in Lancashire’s crushing nine-wicket win over Worcestershire at New Road. The 29-year-old made 105 not out and put on an unbeaten 191 in 31 overs with Paul Horton, who made an undefeated 78. Their combined efforts enabled Lancashire to easily reach their 209-run victory target with 5.3 overs to spare.Half-centuries by captain Keith Parsons and Josh Knappett set up a famous 58-run victory for the Unicorns over Glamorgan at Dene Park in Bournemouth. It was the part-timers’ first victory in the competition at their fourth attempt as a good all-round effort sent the Welsh county to an embarrassing defeat. The county side were bowled out for just 173 with five overs remaining in reply to the Unicorns’ 231 for 8, which came after Glamorgan captain Jamie Dalrymple put them in to bat.Samit Patel’s second limited-overs hundred of his career propelled Nottinghamshire to a 12-run victory over winless Hampshire. Former England one-day all-rounder Patel, 25, started slowly but accelerated in the later stages of the Nottinghamshire innings to finish unbeaten on 108, as the hosts posted a competitive total of 265 for 8, Alex Hales making 46.A fine innings by former England batsman Owais Shah counted for nothing whenrain arrived at Lord’s to wash out Middlesex’s clashwith the Netherlands. Shah had reached an unbeaten 74 from 89 balls with six foursand a brace of sixes when persistent rain arrived for a second time with theMiddlesex score on 185 for 4 after 32.3 overs. Gareth Berg posted a 37-ball 50 with seven boundaries, fell lbw to what transpired to be the final ball of the game.

Rangers see offer for 19-goal gem rejected

An update has emerged on Rangers and their attempts to bring a new forward to Ibrox on deadline day…

What’s the talk?

The Athletic’s Manchester City reporter Sam Lee has confirmed that James McAtee has turned down the chance to sign for the Scottish giants, among other clubs, this month.

He Tweeted: “No loan move for James McAtee today: he’s rejected offers from Rangers, Swansea, Bournemouth, QPR, Huddersfield, Dutch clubs, Belgian clubs, Spanish clubs. City now very hopeful he will sign a new long-term contract.”

Livid

Rangers chief Ross Wilson will surely be livid with this update as it suggests that he was unable convince the player that a move to Glasgow was right for him.

Lee’s report does not state that the Premier League champions blocked a loan deal for McAtee, with the player himself taking control of the situation to refuse an offer from the Gers. Instead of coming to Ibrox and playing regular football in the Premiership, he has seemingly decided to remain at The Etihad to attempt to force his way into Pep Guardiola’s side.

Wilson will also be fuming as it means that the club will not be able to enjoy the forward’s talents in the second-half of the campaign. He has 19 goals and five assists in all competitions for Man City this season, playing for the U23’s and the first team, whilst featuring for the first team in the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup and the Premier League.

City academy coach Brian Barry-Murphy once dubbed the magician a “very intelligent player” and his statistics back that up. He has shown great promise at a young age and could have been an exciting signing for the Gers, which is why the club’s sporting director will be livid that he has failed in his attempts to seal a deal.

It could be a case of McAtee not being willing to join any club regardless of what they offered or said to him, but Wilson may always wonder if he did enough to make the transfer happen.
