Yorkshire have secured Daryl Tuffey, the New Zealand fast bowler, as cover for their overseas player, the Australian Ryan Harris, who will be busy with the IPL during the early part of the county season.”It’s a great opportunity to develop my game,” Tuffey said. “I haven’t played county cricket before and it’s always something I’ve wanted to do. I’m looking forward to the challenge and I’m sure I’ll enjoy it.”Tuffey, 31, has a decade of international experience, having played 25 Tests and 85 ODIs. He regained his regular spot in the New Zealand team in both Tests and one-dayers last July after a two-year absence due to his stint with the unofficial ICL.Tuffey will be part of the Yorkshire set-up until early May, when Harris will land in England after finishing the IPL. This will be Tuffey’s first county stint.”We felt it was important to have an experienced overseas bowler at the club in the period before Ryan Harris joins us,” Yorkshire director of cricket Martyn Moxon said. “We have a young bowling attack and the knowledge and wickets that Daryl can provide us with will be vital if we are to get off to a good start in the County Championship.”

Rangers contract news on King

Loads of Glasgow Rangers fans have been left gushing over some news that has emerged on Leon King.

As per the official website of the Ibrox faithful, the Academy graduate has now signed a deal at the club until the summer of 2024.

It is a big contract to tie down, given that there was strong interest from some clubs in the Premier League for his signature, including the newly-rich Newcastle United and also Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa.

King is still just 17 years of age, and so to have teams from the top flight interested in him is testament to just how much of a prospect he is.

The central defender has already played nine times at youth level, showing different manager’s faiths in him. Nonetheless, getting King tied down was important for the future of the club.

Victoria are the only team in this contest with something to play for but it was Western Australia who controlled the opening day. The Warriors, who are officially out of the race for the final, were 117 behind at stumps after dismissing the visitors for 199 in the first two sessions.Western Australia posted 3 for 82 after losing Wes Robinson (18), who offered no shot to Darren Pattinson, and the captain Marcus North. This is a crucial game for North as he is running out of chances to confirm his spot at No. 6 in the Test side, but he edged Andrew McDonald to first slip on 20. In the last over the opener Liam Davis (42) nicked Bryce McGain’s first ball while trying to cut, ensuring a tense session on the second morning.Victoria were docked a point for a slow over rate in their previous game, which cut their lead over Queensland to three, so they began the match desperate to re-seal their spot in the final. They were sent in and the situation looked bright when the opener Nick Jewell moved to a half-century.Jewell’s post-lunch exit to Brad Knowles on 55 started a costly collapse of 6 for 54 that dropped the Bushrangers to 8 for 155. Andrew McDonald (6) was run-out chasing a risky single before David Hussey was caught behind off Michael Hogan on 17. The wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi was also responsible for Matthew Wade’s exit and when Damien Wright was bowled by Steve Magoffin the home side was in command.John Hastings’ unbeaten 28 extended the innings, which finished when Knowles gained his third wicket by bowling McGain. Magoffin and Hogan provided useful support with two each.

Downie: Newcastle eyeing other CBs

Keith Downie has revealed that Newcastle United are now eyeing other central defenders whose names have not yet been reported.

The Lowdown: Who’s been linked so far?

Following the arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood at St. James’ Park, it looks as if the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium are now looking at bringing in a new centre-back as their third signing in the January transfer window.

The names that have been linked the most seem to be Sven Botman, Diego Carlos and Benoit Badiashile, but as the window ticks down it may be that the new owners now look at other targets to bring in, with crucial games against both Watford and Leeds United in the Premier League coming up.

The Latest: Alternatives eyed

Speaking to The Transfer Tavern, Sky Sports journalist Downie has revealed that the North East club are now eyeing alternative targets in the centre-half position, outside of the names already reported:

“I think they’re just juggling a few names at the moment.

“I mean, if I’m honest I was given two other names yesterday that I have not reported yet, because I’m trying to stand those up.”

The Verdict: Get one in now

Whoever the player is, the Tyneside outfit simply need to get a central defender in now.

They currently have the second-worst defensive record in the top flight, and so freshening up the backline would really help Eddie Howe and his team going forward.

Looking at their current options, Ciaran Clark is currently rated as the division’s worst centre-back (to have played at least five games) so far this season, while Federico Fernandez, Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles all rank inside the worst eleven (WhoScored).

It is clearly an area that needs improving, and so a new centre-half must now be the priority for the Magpies.

Sidebottom fears for England future

Ryan Sidebottom has said he has ‘nothing to prove’ as an international player but conceded that regular injuries have forced him down the England pecking order in recent times

Ryan Sidebottom has said he has ‘nothing to prove’ as an international player but conceded that regular injuries have forced him down the England pecking order in recent times.Sidebottom was a surprise inclusion in England’s 15-man squad for the World Twenty20, which starts at the end of April in West Indies. He has been unable to complete a series since England hosted New Zealand in 2008 and was forced to fly home from England’s recent tour to Bangladesh with a thigh problem he picked up in the first ODI in Dhaka in February. In his absence Tim Bresnan and Steven Finn impressed and Sidebottom admits he now has to try and earn his place back. “There’s nothing I have to prove as a player or a bowler, I’ve proved that I’m good enough to play at the highest level. [But] the likes of Finn and Bresnan have come in and done pretty well, so I’ve got to keep going and try to push them out of the side.”Everybody knows what I’m capable of. I’m not the fastest bowler, but I offer accuracy and swing, and I put batsmen under pressure. If [England] need my experience then I’m here.”Sidebottom has played just one Test match in the last 12 months, when he was surprisingly called-up to replace Graham Onions for the final Test against South Africa at The Wanderers. England lost heavily and Sidebottom was unable to make a significant impact. His performance prompted suggestions that his pace was significantly down from when he led England’s attack so successfully in 2008.Yet Sidebottom insists that rather than his pace suffering from injury, there is instead a lack of consistency in his bowling due to the disruption caused by the string of back, hip, groin and Achilles injuries he has endured. “Nothing has changed in my action and my pace hasn’t changed,” he said. “I just need to get back into [match] action. I don’t think there’s much difference at all. What I have found tough is constantly stopping and starting again with injuries.”As a bowler you need rhythm. When I was playing regularly for England, I didn’t worry about anything. But recently, I’ve played one game, been 12th man and then tried to get back in the team. It’s not been easy to find rhythm.”Sidebottom hopes to take some momentum into the World Twenty20 by bowling plenty of overs for Nottinghamshire as they begin their Championship campaign against Kent on Thursday. He bowled 18 overs for Nottinghamshire in a warm-up game against Durham MCCU, collecting 3 for 48 in 18 overs.Mick Newell, the Nottinghamshire coach, thinks Sidebottom needs overs under his belt to be at his best but says Sidebottom has to sustain the intensity he showed between 2007 and 2008. “Ryan likes to bowl, even though it might not look like that when he’s pulling his hair out. He’s not bowled enough overs, whether it’s in nets or matches, because of the injuries he’s picked up.”International cricket is played at a higher intensity than county cricket. He did well for the first 18 months but he’s suffered a little bit with that of late. He’s got to stay at that higher intensity the whole time. But he wants to do well with England for another couple of years yet.”
