Pakistan's spirit willing, despite Aamer blow

For a team that has just lost an opening Test to Australia by a not too inconsiderable margin, Sydney finds Pakistan in surprisingly robust spirits

For a team that has just lost an opening Test to Australia by a not too inconsiderable margin, Sydney finds Pakistan in surprisingly robust spirits. Having seen plenty of grass on the SCG track yesterday, the captain Mohammad Yousuf was good-humoured enough to quip that the Australians must be a little scared. It was funnier in Punjabi.Partly it appears to stem from the captain himself. Yousuf, like Hanif Mohammad many years ago, would probably stand unmoved in cyclones. There may be other flaws in him as captain, even in this one attribute, but it is never a bad thing in Pakistan cricket to have a calming leader around. Certainly there are less complaints coming out of the side. And his 8-1 fields as Shane Watson approached his maiden hundred in Melbourne were – more than just pragmatism – a surprisingly astute tactical nod to the nervousness in the Australian air about centuries. It should’ve been rewarded. But partly it also seems to have become the accepted norm around the world and within the squad that Pakistan take time to wake up. It’s the way they won the World Twenty20 after all. And in five Test series over the last five years – thrice abroad – they’ve won the second Test immediately after losing the first. Most recently they did so across the Tasman.”We can do well in the first Tests as well,” Yousuf said. “In New Zealand, we played a good first Test but we lost by 30-odd runs. It doesn’t matter so much whether you win or lose, it matters only how you play. In the second Test we played well and we won. Even here in Melbourne, we lost but we had good sessions. Pakistan teams struggle in Australia but we will try hard here.”It is nothing to be particularly proud of, but something in which solace can be often be sought. It shouldn’t have happened here; off the back of a tough three-Test series in New Zealand, they came and played a two-game day in Hobart before the Boxing Day Test. They should’ve been up and running.More tangible hope should lie in Pakistan’s probable selection. Talk of two spinners is persistent but probably also misplaced. History doesn’t agree with such strategies for Pakistan; memory only recalls Iqbal Qasim and Tauseef Ahmed having worked well in tandem and that was just the once and on the kind of surface they just don’t make anymore, except occasionally in India.More recently, in 2007-08 Pakistan picked Abdur Rehman and Danish Kaneria against South Africa at home and that seemed unnatural. Sydney is also not the raging turner it once was; spin will be rewarded but one should suffice especially if the some of the grass of yesterday and today finds its way to tomorrow. Kaneria has protection on his finger still, but the captain seems confident. The natural, Pakistani way is to complement three fast bowlers with one spinner. Their attack has been depleted by the news that Mohammad Aamer, who took five wickets in Australia’s second innings at the MCG, will not play due to a groin injury but it remains a decent one on this surface. The Abdur Rauf selection in the first Test was a mistake and it was paid for. Mohammad Sami and Umar Gul will come in for Rauf and Aamer, and their remains the acknowledgment that Australia could be troubled.”Danish is fit and he will be in, he bowled a lot yesterday and says he is fine,” said Yousuf. “Looking at the wicket, there is a bit of grass so three fast bowlers are likely. We have to decide which three because Aamer is a little stiff. Nothing serious, but he is stiff because he has bowled a lot.”Pakistan won’t mind much the mugginess and humidity of Sydney, which are not a world away from Karachi. Sydney was the venue of Pakistan’s last Test win over Australia, in 1995-96, a fair cricketing generation ago. The skies burst open today but only showers are expected during the Test. It has been suggested that Sydney will suit Pakistan but Yousuf made the valid point that Melbourne wasn’t far from home either. “In the last Test, the wicket, the weather were more or less what we get in Pakistan, maybe a little more bounce”But we’re feeling good. There is no disappointment at all. I told the team, OK we lost but it doesn’t matter. Don’t let it get you down, learn from the mistakes you made. There is still a lot of cricket to look forward to.”

Wolves fans hail official club post

A number of Wolves supporters have been hailing their players after a club post showed them receiving their booster jab on Monday.

Wanderers picked up a solid 0-0 draw at home to Champions League holders Chelsea on Sunday afternoon as their resolute form continues. That result followed the 1-0 win away to Brighton last week, leaving Wolves sitting eighth in the Premier League currently and dreaming of European football next season.

Away from the field of play, Bruno Lage and his players have been leading by example, with the club’s official Twitter channel sharing photos of them all receiving their booster jab as an extra layer of protection against the global pandemic.

The manager had recently stated that every member of the squad was keen to get the job, with Wolves having one of the best vaccination uptake rates of any Premier League club (Daily Mail).

It is great to see at a time when all footballers are being urged to get vaccinated, helping to ensure that the Premier League schedule continues as normal for as long as possible amid a spate of recent postponements.

Luke Hatfield tips Traore to join Spurs

Wolves will allow Adama Traore to join Tottenham in the January transfer window if a suitable offer arrives, according to journalist Luke Hatfield.

The Lowdown: Traore linked with Wolves exit

The Spaniard has again proven to be a hit-and-miss figure for Wanderers this season, making just 10 Premier League starts and not registering a single goal or assist.

Bruno Lage seemingly doesn’t see Traore as a regular starter and he has been linked with a move away from Molineux this month, with Spurs thought to be keen on snapping him up.

The 25-year-old’s current deal expires in the summer of 2023, so Wolves are running out of time before they risk losing him on a free transfer.

The Latest: Hatfield talks up Spurs move

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Hatfield admitted that he could see Traore joining Spurs in the January transfer window, should the right offer come along. He outlined:

“It’s a situation where I do think it would work best for Wolves, if they were to get a suitable offer, to cash in on him.

“They obviously won’t undercut themselves in terms of the price that they get for him but, ultimately, if he’s not playing games and the contract situation is continuing on then it makes more sense for Wolves to sell.”

The Verdict: Time to move on?

Traore has had long enough now to prove himself at Wolves, having been at Molineux since 2018, and while there have been moments of quality – Tim Sherwood has hailed him as ‘fantastic’ in the past – now is the time to accept an offer if a lucrative one comes in.

Wanderers should be able to receive a decent sum for the Spain international, which could then help go towards signing a top-quality replacement this month.

The returning Pedro Neto will also provide Lage with another attacking option, so Traore shouldn’t be a huge miss if he does move on during the current window.

Ashraful under pressure to perform – Siddons

Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, has said batsman Mohammad Ashraful was fortunate to retain a place in the national team but felt there was no adequate replacement for him yet

Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, has said batsman Mohammad Ashraful was fortunate to retain a place in the national team but felt there was no adequate replacement for him yet. Siddons also viewed the first Test as an opportunity lost for Bangladesh and believed the result could have been different had the top order batted better.Ashraful averages 22.92 from 51 Tests, and his 101 against Sri Lanka in December 2008 is his only 50-plus score in more than two years. “There is definitely a lot of pressure on Mohammad Ashraful,” Siddons told Cricinfo. “He knows that he has been very inconsistent and we have talked about it. In that regard, he is very lucky to be still in the team but unless you find someone else, someone better, to replace him, he will play. After all, it wasn’t long time back that he hit a hundred against Sri Lanka. I hope he scores in the second Test and inspires the whole team.”Akram Khan, the national selector, had earlier said that they were forced to play Ashraful in the past because of the lack of seniors but Siddons wasn’t convinced about that reasoning. “I have never been a fan of playing players just because of experience. You need to perform,” Siddons said. “Else, you might as well play young players. As for Ashraful, there is no one anyway, as yet, as good as him and hence he continues to play. But the pressure is growing.”Looking back at the first Test, Siddons said Bangladesh would have done better, perhaps even won the Test, had the top order put in a better performance. “I definitely see it as an opportunity lost. We finished short of 100 runs in the end. We bowled well in the first innings and that gave us a great chance. But we didn’t bat well in the first 30 overs in both the innings. The top order needs to step up. If we can bat the first 30 overs well, I am sure this team is capable of putting good totals.”Shahriar Nafees, playing his first Test in nearly two years due to his ICL dalliance, looked shaky at No. 3 in both innings and looked uncertain outside his off stump but Siddons said that Nafees would be given another chance in the second Test in Dhaka. “He should get a chance. This is his comeback game and there was bound to be some nerves. We played him because he is a good player of spin and we felt India would play two spinners in that Test. If he had got through the initial period against pace he can go on to play a big innings. He is working hard and I must say that he did get a good ball in the first innings.”Considering Nafees’ form, some felt there might be a revision in the batting order but Siddons also ruled out any promotion in the order for Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim or Mahmudullah. “Shakib is still learning to bat at his position at the international level and I don’t think he should be pushed up now. Mahmudullah did bat well but he has just started playing at this level. He also found out all about pressure at this level in the second innings (Zaheer Khan bombarded him with a bouncer-attack and Mahmudullah fell trying to counterattack). Mushfiqur has to keep wickets as well. It won’t be prudent to push people up, what would solve the problem is the batsmen batting higher up start scoring some runs.”

Corey Edwards puts Barbados on top

A round-up of the first day of matches from the sixth round of the Regional Four Day Competition

Cricinfo staff20-Feb-2010Barbados reached a position of dominance against Jamaica in Trinidad, bowling the opposition out for 226 and reaching 113 for 1 in reply at stumps. Fast bowler Corie Edwards, playing in just his third first-class game, grabbed six for 41 to leave Jamaica reeling. They had slipped to 100 for 7 at one stage, but the lower order put up a strong resistance. David Bernard contributed 55 while Odean Brown chipped in with 33 to lend some respectability to the Jamaica score, but their bowlers struggled to make inroads when Barbados came out to bat. Dale Richards remained unbeaten on 63 as his team scored at a healthy rate to reach half Jamaica’s core in just 28 overs.Leeward Islands capitulated for 192 against Guyana at the National Cricket Centre, but hit back with two wickets though still ending the day on the back foot. Fast bowler Esuan Crandon bagged 5 for 39 and was supported by Devendra Bishoo’s three-for to dent Leewards, who had just one batsman, Omari Banks, score a half-century. Guyana suffered a setback early in their reply, losing their openers cheaply, but Gajanand Singh remains unbeaten on 27. They finished at stumps on 45 for 2, still 147 adrift.Legspinner Rawl Lewis starred for Windward Islands on a low-scoring day in the Regional Four Day Competition, taking 5 for 81 to bowl out Trinidad and Tobago for 263 in Port of Spain. T&T will be disappointed, for four of their batsmen went past 30 but only one, Adrian Barath, managed a half-century. Justin Guillen made 37 in an opening stand of 90, Darren Bravo chipped in with 36, Sherwin Ganga scored 39 but squandered their starts. In reply, Windwards had reached 23 for 1 after losing opener Miles Bascombe.

Man Utd: Big claim made on Pogba’s future

Manchester United have been highly speculated to be fully involved in the January transfer window due to the arrival of interim manager, Ralf Rangnick, and after the side lost last night at home to Wolves, a fresh claim on Paul Pogba’s future at the club could be a consolation for fans.

What’s the word?

Sky Sports Journalist, Ben Ransom, has spoken this morning, giving some much-needed answers to questions on Pogba’s immediate future at Manchester United, giving his perspective on the situation and whether Manchester United could hold onto the midfielder until the end of the season.

Speaking on Sky Sports this morning, Ransom shared a twist to the tale, revealing that he is unlikely to leave over the winter. He said:

“Pogba I’m sure, Mino Raiola I’m sure will be plotting his future, but at the moment it’s too early for Ralf Rangnick to say what’s going to happen this month.

“Given the fact that we’re not expecting Pogba to rejoin full training for another couple of weeks – another couple of weeks for him to be match fit – you’d suggest that points to something being resolved in the summer instead.”

Fans will be buzzing

Pogba has had a rollercoaster of a time during his time at Old Trafford after making an epic return back in 2016 signing for a world record-breaking fee at the time of £89m.

The World Cup-winning Frenchman has had a total of 219 appearances, with an impressive 38 goals and 49 assists on his tally for the Manchester giants, winning two league cups and one Europa League with the club. Thus, fans will surely be delighted that any chance of him leaving this winter has been evaporated.

That said, the £290k-per-week star is still free to discuss pre-contract agreements with other clubs as his current deal ends in the summer, with a number of sides rumoured to be interested in signing the midfielder, including Real Madrid and PSG.

Pogba bagged seven assists in thirteen appearances for United before he was side-lined over a month ago due to injury and given their poor performances since, fans will surely be desperate for his creativity to be injected back into the team under Rangnick, who plays a 4-2-2-2 pressing formation built for creative play.

One fan tweeted after the Wolves game;

“How many more embarrassing performances do we need to have until you lot learn that we don’t know how to play footy without Pogba.”

Consequently, the news that his future will remain at Old Trafford for another few months will surely leave a host of supporters elated.
