Conte’s predicted Spurs XI vs Leeds

Tottenham Hotspur round off this weekend’s Premier League fixtures as they host Leeds United later this afternoon.

Antonio Conte will take the dugout for his first home match in charge of Spurs, having replaced Nuno Santo nearly three weeks ago. He remains unbeaten after two games after a win against Vitesse in the Europa Conference League and a 0-0 draw to Everton before the international break.

The Italian is now dealing with some injury concerns, whilst one of his starters will be absent through suspension, so it’ll be interesting to see what sort of lineup he names in N17 today.

Here’s what Football FanCast are predicting…

There could be only two changes to the side that played out the stalemate at Goodison Park.

Argentina duo Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso have returned from international duty with their own injury problems, the former could be out for a while after picking up a suspected hamstring injury, whilst the latter is a major doubt heading into kick-off.

Davinson Sanchez seems the most likely option to replace him in the heart of Conte’s back-three, even if the £28.8m-rated star has been dubbed a “real liability” to his team in the past.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news-updates-transfers-antonio-conte-thfc” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

Meanwhile, Lucas Moura could keep his place in the final third, but he may move in centrally into the no.10 role, meaning Dele Alli is snubbed once again.

The other change could see Tanguy Ndombele start for the first time under Conte as he replaces the suspended Oliver Skipp in the engine room. He is likely to partner Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the middle, with Harry Winks on standby in case the Dane doesn’t feature through injury.

They, along with Harry Kane and Heung-min Son complete the attack.

Further back, Sanchez will join goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, Eric Dier and left-back Ben Davies in defence, with Sergio Reguilon and Emerson Royal bombing down the flanks.

Gautam Gambhir, the India opener who has been passed fit for the Champions Trophy following a groin injury, has said Virender Sehwag’s absence will affect India and add responsibility on the rest of the players.”[Sehwag’s absence] does play on your mind,” Gambhir said. “When he is around, he is so destructive that he allows you to be yourself. When he is not around, you try to take up the responsibility from both ends. He is a legend of the game and surely you miss him. We have a tremendous rapport, both on and off the field.”Gambhir had a great 2008 and has been nominated for ICC awards in two categories – Cricketer of the Year and Test Player of the Year. “It was a fabulous year. I never thought it would go the way it did and that I would be up for so many awards, including the Arjuna Award. How things change and so quickly.” From January 2008 Gambhir averaged 44.31 from 41 ODIs, scoring four centuries and nine half-centuries.Apart from Sehwag’s absence, offspinner Harbhajan Singh felt India were missing a bowling allrounder like Shaun Pollock. Harbhajan also hoped to score his maiden one-day century during the tournament. “In a function in Mumbai recently, Sunil Gavaskar wanted to know when I would hit my first hundred. Coming from him it was a huge thing. Hopefully there would soon be a cause for cheer and it would be for Sunny .”India will play their only warm-up ahead of the Champions Trophy on Sunday against New Zealand in Potchefstroom before their first game next Saturday against Pakistan at Centurion.

Man Utd injury update ahead of Arsenal

Manchester United have received a big selection boost ahead of their Premier League encounter with Arsenal at Old Trafford this evening after interim manager Michael Carrick revealed he has no fresh fitness concerns.

What’s the word?

Although long-term absentees Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba and Raphael Varane are set to be joined by Luke Shaw on the sidelines once again as he continues his recovery from concussion, captain Harry Maguire will be available once again after serving a one-match suspension.

“Nothing really new,” Carrick said to MUTV (as relayed by the Manchester Evening News). “There are always niggles at this time of year, playing a lot of games. There are always players you’re waiting on a little bit, to an extent.

“Obviously, Harry is coming back into the squad after his suspension, but we’ll see who is fit and available for tomorrow.”

Shaw suffered a head injury prior to the most recent international break, and although he started against Watford, he suffered another knock, meaning he has missed the last two games for the Red Devils.

Michael Carrick will be delighted

News that there are no new injury worries to contend with, while Maguire is also able to feature once again will leave Carrick feeling absolutely delighted ahead of this potentially crucial clash.

Under the 40-year-old’s tutelage, United have progressed to the last-16 of the Champions League with a 2-0 victory over Villarreal and held league leaders Chelsea to a 1-1 draw, successfully steadying the ship following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal.

However, with the Gunners currently five points ahead of the 20-time English champions in the top-flight table, Carrick and co. will be desperate for a positive result against the capital club.

Missing out on a place in the top four would be a disaster for United, and therefore, Maguire’s availability coupled with no new injury concerns will be warmly welcomed by everyone at the Theatre of Dreams.

Victorian bowlers set up easy victory

A clinical performance by Victoria meant the Delhi Daredevils, like Royal Challengers Bangalore yesterday, were in danger of failing to make full use of the home advantage

A similar story to yesterday’s panned out at the Feroz Shah Kotla, with another Indian team failing to capitalise on home conditions and crowd support. Delhi Daredevils – under new captain Gautam Gambhir – were comprehensively beaten by Victoria, for whom Clint McKay led a devastating seam attack, in the opening match of Group D.The win capped off a remarkable day for the Australian participants, after New South Wales pummelled the Eagles a few hours earlier at the same venue.Delhi had been left to look like outsiders against an attack that was relentless on a track with consistently uneven bounce, and which made run-scoring quite problematic. Gambhir had not bargained for such a dismal showing after choosing to bat and Delhi just managed to scrape past the second-lowest Twenty20 score at this venue, recorded by the Eagles earlier. The signs that a devil might just be in the pitch were first seen in the third over. The ball from Shane Harwood kept low, Gambhir was slow in getting his bat down in time and his off stump went cartwheeling.Virender Sehwag attempted to stamp his authority at home by smashing boundaries off successive Harwood deliveries, but was superbly caught and bowled by McKay in his first over off a mistimed shot on the leg side. McKay followed it up by getting Owais Shah caught behind for a duck. The Victorian fielders were always alert, keeping the batsmen on their toes. A moment of indecision from Tillakaratne Dilshan had Dinesh Karthik scrambling for safety at the bowler’s end. Cameron White swooped in from cover and threw it back to Andrew McDonald, who took the bails off in a flash. The situation called for Dilshan to play the anchor role and he was relatively sedate till the 16th over, when McKay – who seemed to be enjoying the conditions – lured him out and removed his off stump. Mithun Manhas tried to make the most of his run-out reprieve, but a suspected hamstring injury did not augur well for Delhi and Harwood broke through his defences to send him back for 25. McDonald capped off a superb display by castling Bhatia and Sangwan in the final over. However, there was more disappointment in store for the partisan crowd. If there were any doubts about the pitch during and after Delhi’s innings, Rob Quiney settled them in style. Dirk Nannes, bowling to his state team-mates, was handed no favours, as Quiney belted the ball past him to the mid-on boundary. Nannes’ new-ball partner Ashish Nehra fared no better and was carted for a four and a six in his third over. With 32 on the board in the fifth over, Delhi were in a state of panic and bewilderment. The introduction of legspinner Amit Mishra did not prove fruitful immediately, with Quiney attacking him from the start. Mishra was dispatched for six over long-on in his very first over, and the second and third deliveries of his next over disappeared for ten runs. Mishra persisted with flight and bowled Quiney next ball, the batsman failing to connect while trying to work to the leg side.Brad Hodge, who had been watching the pyrotechnics from the other end, was cleaned up by Dilshan two balls later, but with Victoria racing to 55 for 2 in the ninth over, Delhi needed a pre-Diwali miracle. Dilshan and Mishra, bowling in tandem, managed to stifle the runs but Victoria had been delivered a productive start, and could afford to sit back.Even Rajat Bhatia’s dismissal of David Hussey with a slower one did little to instill confidence in Gambhir to try out Pradeep Sangwan’s left-arm seam. It didn’t make much difference, for Aiden Blizzard ended the innings on a high, smashing Bhatia for a six over long-on.

National Bank of Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Talha has set 50 wickets in the current Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and a role in Pakistan’s tour of Australia as his targets for the season. The 21-year-old from Faisalabad, who has represented Pakistan just once, in the ill-fated Test against Sri Lanka back in March, told he was happy with his form so far this season.”I’ve managed to take 17 wickets in the four matches that I have played so far and it’s been great bowling in tandem with Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer,” Talha said. “Asif is really helpful in providing advice on how to bowl to different batsmen and he really encourages me. It’s great having someone as experienced as Asif alongside me in the team.”Talha, who managed figures of 1 for 88 on Test debut, has been overlooked by the selectors since. However, he was happy with slight changes that had been made to his run-up recently and hoped to get a look-in for the tour of Australia.”I feel in good shape and am comfortable with my run up and action,” Talha said. “I hope I can continue to have a successful season with National Bank and make the Australia tour. For now, though, the most important thing is for me to concentrate on the match against Sui Southern Gas Corporation”.

Celtic: Expert thinks Jota could be out for seven weeks

Injury expert Ben Dinnery thinks Celtic attacker Jota could be out for a total of seven weeks with his hamstring issue, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Jota’s absence

Celtic are expected to sign the 22-year-old on a permanent deal before the end of the season in a £6.5m transfer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-18/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Portuguese winger has been involved in 14 goals in 18 appearances, however, he’s missed the last two games with a hamstring issue.

Ange Postecoglou has ruled Jota out of the League Cup final against Hibernian later this month, as shared by Sky Sports, and it seems as if he could miss the entire festive period and New Year.

The Latest: Dinnery’s comments

Injury expert Dinnery was talking to Football Insider regarding Jota’s timeframe on the sidelines.

This is what he had to say in reply, believing Jota, labelled as ‘explosive’ by Alan Hutton, could return following the winter break, meaning he’d have missed seven weeks of action after he picked up the problem on December 2 against Hearts.

“Look, it’s very much touch and go. It depends on the player’s response to treatment.

“We talk about external factors maybe influencing a possible return to play. Should Celtic go on a run and they keep winning games, then the pressures to maybe throw Jota back in the team lessens almost.

“You’re making that decision. Why take any chances? Why throw anybody in there?

“Two or three weeks? Yeah, but I think those decisions will be probably taken game week to game week. There will always be context to those decisions.

“If a player is returning and he does decide to sort of throw him back in, then you could be looking at maybe just minutes from the bench.

“With a return to maybe like a full, proper training during that winter break.”

The Verdict: Not ideal…

Should Dinnery’s prediction on Jota prove accurate, it could prove to be a blow, but possibly the correct decision.

Giorgos Giakoumakis has struggled to get his Parkhead career going, whereas Albian Ajeti and Kyogo Furuhashi went off on Thursday against Real Betis, also with hamstring issues.

That means Postecoglou’s attacking options could be extremely limited ahead of the winter break with some crucial games before then.

The only good news to come from Jota’s time on the sidelines could be the possibility of making his move permanent, with Dinnery thinking he could be without Jota for a total of seven weeks.
