Exclusive: Ex-Everton star drops huge Richarlison transfer claim

Ex-Everton star Michael Ball believes that Richarlison leaving the club would net the Toffees a “huge” profit.

Reports over the summer suggested that the Brazilian attacker was seen as a potential acquisition for French giants PSG, amid doubts over Kylian Mbappe’s future.

Mbappe was linked with Real Madrid but no deal was ultimately struck, with a bid of just over £171m rejected by the Ligue 1 club.

Richarlison, 24, was seen as the potential replacement for the France international but, of course, no bid was ultimately tabled by the French side.

Richarlison moved to the club back in 2018 from Watford in a deal that ultimately cost the Toffees a fee of £50m.

He has gone on to make a total of 122 appearances for the club, scoring 43 goals and registering 10 assists, while he has also won six caps for Brazil, scoring five goals.

Despite the hefty fee attached to the deal taking him to Goodison Park, Ball believes that he will be sold for a huge profit when he eventually does leave the club.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “If he starts showing the ability that he thinks he has and what he’s shown glimpses of at Everton then a big club will be coming in for him for top dollar.

“It’s a guy who was apparently ruing the transfer window when he made the move to Everton, will show that Everton will be making a huge profit when he finally does leave.”

Should Everton sign Serge Aurier?

Everton did little to improve their first-team ranks in the summer transfer window as Rafa Benitez was given a shoestring budget with which to work.

Five new faces arrived but only one of them cost the Toffees a direct transfer fee.

What’s the word?

With that in mind, the Merseyside outfit should probably take on any help they can get in terms of recruitment.

Despite not spending a lot in the last few months, they have actually enjoyed a good start to the new campaign, with summer signings Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray scoring three goals each.

Other areas certainly still need improving, however.

One player who has been linked with a move to Goodison Park is Serge Aurier. The Ivorian is a free agent after leaving Tottenham by mutual consent but fresh reports from the Liverpool Echo have quashed rumours of a move.

They claimed that the 28-year-old has been discussed but the Toffees are not actively pursuing a deal at the moment.

Go get him

With Everton lacking the financial firepower to take on the Premier League’s elite, signing players like Aurier would be shrewd business.

The right-back has been described as “uncoachable” by sources close to Spurs staff but the Toffees lack any form of depth at full-back.

They only have one senior left-back in Lucas Digne, while Seamus Coleman is their only true option on the opposite side.

That being said, the Irishman’s contract expires in two years’ time, and at the age of 32, he is getting no younger.

He has also been injured this term and is set to miss the next two to three weeks of action. Ben Godfrey has deputised unsuccessfully, but if he doesn’t play, they’d have to rely on Jonjoe Kenny.

The English defender was once tipped for a vibrant future after being nominated for the Rookie of the Year award following his spell on loan at Schalke 04.

Sadly, his career has waned since that moment. He spent the second half of 2020/21 on loan at Celtic, where he was simply disastrous.

Kenny offered plenty going forward but made a plethora of mistakes across multiple Old Firm derbies. His performances were so bad that the £5.2m-rated dud was described as a “horror show” by the cast of ACSOM.

The 24-year-old is yet to respond to his critics since returning to Finch Farm, but Benitez could finally axe him by bringing Aurier to the club.

The former Spurs man is hardly a pillar of reliability himself but he does at least have plenty of Premier League, continental and international experience under his belt.

TV coverage for women's World Cup

The ICC has confirmed to Cricinfo that seven games will be shown, all from the North Sydney Oval, during the forthcoming ICC Women’s World Cup

Jenny Roesler21-Jan-2009Seven matches on a satellite channel may not seem much in this era of saturated sports broadcasting, but the women’s game can count as a minor coup the fact that their World Cup has this much coverage. The ICC has confirmed to Cricinfo that seven games will be shown, all from the North Sydney Oval, for the tournament which kicks off in New South Wales in March.Fox Sports will be showing the matches in Australia, while Sky will televise games in the UK and New Zealand. ESPN Star sports, who are the official broadcaster for all ICC events, have yet to confirm licensees in all the territories.Women’s cricket has rarely featured on television in Australia, but there was a breakthrough of sorts in February 2008 when Australia and England had their own one-hour highlights package on Channel 9 from a Twenty20 match after being a curtain-raiser for Australia and India men at the MCG.

Levir reconhece erros do Santos e exalta ataque: 'Ótimos e fortes'

Clarke pulls out of IPL auction

Michael Clarke, who was valued at US$ 1 million, has pulled out of the IPL auction. Clarke was set to be among the top three purchases in the auction scheduled to held on Friday in Goa

Michael Clarke has pulled out of the IPL auction – where he had a base value of US$1 million – citing Australia’s busy international schedule for his decision. Clarke was set to be among the top three picks and Chennai Super Kings, last year’s finalists, were expected to lead the bidding for him in Goa on Friday.Clarke, who joins Mitchell Johnson and Stuart Broad in deciding to stay away from the IPL, made the announcement at the MCG, where Australia were preparing for Friday’s game against New Zealand. “Speaking with my management, my family, my fiancee and the hierarchy of the IPL and for me this year, I won’t be going to the IPL,” he said.”There’s probably a number of reasons but the most important thing for me is we’ve only got a couple of weeks off, we’ve got a really busy schedule, and I just think for where I’m at with my body and that time at home it’s valuable for me. I’d love to take part in it one day. It’s just about finding the right time for me to be a part of it.”Clarke chose not to go last year and said it was a tough decision this time. “There’s obviously a lot of great things about the IPL and that’s why I say I certainly want to be a part of it at some stage,” he said. “Every player is in a different position as well but for me – mentally, physically where I am – I just think those two weeks at home will be great for my to come home and see family and friends.”Asked whether he was surprised, given the constraints, that so many Australian players had signed up, Clarke spoke of the positive spin-offs from the tournament. “I think it’s a wonderful thing for cricket,” he said. “It’s definitely improved Twenty20 cricket, certainly played a part in improving one-day cricket and the lead-up to the Twenty20 World Championship is the IPL, so it’s pretty good preparation. It doesn’t surprise me so many guys are going there. It’s just a personal choice at this stage.”Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, believed Clarke opted out to avoid an embarrassment at the auction. “I don’t think anybody is ready to pay that kind of price [$1m],” Modi told the news channel NDTV. “The reality is in front of him. He didn’t want to be unsold in the auction and so decided to pull out. We asked him to reduce the price but he was unwilling.”Unfortunately, he pulled out earlier and there was penalty in the first year but this year we have waived off the penalty and I don’t think we will be able to move forward like this. We will discuss the matter in our governing council and have the answer by this evening.”

Crystal Palace: Fans go wild at Eberechi Eze update

Crystal Palace man Eberechi Eze took to Twitter on Monday evening to provide an update on his comeback from an Achilles injury.

And, as to be expected, a number of Eagles fans were quick to reply to his post on social media.

Eze suffered a freak injury in training towards the end of last season, which, at first, some thought would keep him out until the New Year.

However, reports last month suggested that the 23-year-old is way ahead of schedule in regards to his rehabilitation, and it seems as if he has taken the next step on his return to the pitch.

Eze posted a seven-second video of himself running freely at the club’s training ground, captioning the tweet with an hourglass emoji.

Palace then re-tweeted the attacking midfielder’s post, and it also led to a number of Palace supporters getting involved.

David de Gea was superb against Villarreal

Manchester United had to rely on a last-minute Cristiano Ronaldo strike to seal a victory against a well-organised Villarreal side in an entertaining Champions League encounter.

The Red Devils were searching for their first points in Group F on Wednesday night after an opening day defeat away at Young Boys, but it was another underwhelming performance from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s charges.

Alex Telles’ magnificent volley and Ronaldo’s dramatic first-time finish earned a comeback win for the Old Trafford outfit, although it could have been a different story if it wasn’t for their in-form goalkeeper.

A bright start from the visitors forced David de Gea into an early save after Arnaut Danjuma drove his effort towards goal, and the Spanish shot-stopper would be called into action on several occasions in the remainder of the half.

Danjuma again stung the palms of De Gea just 10 minutes later, this time firing across the keeper’s body, but he was able to force the former Bournemouth winger’s strike wide when at full stretch.

Just moments later, United’s No.1 was called into action once more, this time tipping a glancing header from Villarreal striker Paco Alcacer over his crossbar.

The remainder of the first half carried on in a similar fashion, with De Gea repelling the La Liga’s outfit’s advances via some outstanding saves, yet the deadlock was finally broken just eight minutes after the interval.

This time, Alcacer’s effort squeezed between his compatriot’s legs after latching onto another Danjuma cross, although it didn’t take the shine off of what was a classic performance from the 30-year-old gem.

As per SofaScore, De Gea received a match rating of 7.7 out of 10, the highest total awarded to any player on the pitch. And when looking at his underlying numbers, it’s easy to understand why.

The ex-Atletico Madrid ace made a huge six saves on the night, all from within his own penalty box. He also achieved a passing accuracy of 100%, illustrating his ability with the ball at his feet and picked out a teammate with both of his attempted long balls.

It’s been a fabulous return to form for De Gea after several years struggling for consistency between the sticks, and he’ll now be hoping to continue in a similar vein for the remainder of the campaign.
