Wainman says Bamford/Meslier deals Leeds’s best business

JustJoe Football ShowJustJoe Football Show presenter Joe Wainman would go along with Illan Meslier and Patrick Bamford signing new contracts being the best bits of business for Leeds this summer, when speaking prior to Dan James’ last-minute move.

21-year-old goalkeeper Meslier put pen to paper on a five-year-deal, keeping with the Elland Rad outfit until the summer of 2026.

The Leeds United shot-stopper was in inspired form last season for the Whites, keeping eleven clean sheets in 35 matches and helping his side finish ninth in the Premier League table.

It wasn’t just clean sheets which helped Leeds have a superb campaign last season, striker Patrick Bamford was the club’s leading goalscorer in the Premier League with 17 goals and this made him the fourth top goalscorer in the top flight also.

The 27-year-old also penned a five-year deal at Elland Road alongside Meslier and when asked if this was the best business of the transfer window for Leeds, Wainman told Football FanCast: “You could say that yeah, definitely. I’d go along with that.”

Leeds got their first point of the season on the board last weekend against Everton after a 2-2 draw and they will be hoping that they can put a good run of form together and replicate last season with a top ten finish.

Darren Maddy has stepped down as Warwickshire’s captain and the club have appointed Ian Westwood as his replacement.Maddy, who led Warwickshire to promotion in the Championship in 2008 – his second year in charge – said that he felt he had taken the club as far as he could.”I feel that I am leaving the team and the club in a stronger position than when I took over,” he said. “It has been fantastic to lead such a big club but all good things have to come to an end and I believe now is an appropriate time to hand over the reins. I know Ian is keen to maintain the good progress that the team has shown in the last 12 months.”Maddy was one of four England players to have been involved in the first season of the unofficial Indian Cricket League in 2007, and though he did not return for the recently concluded second season in 2008, Warwickshire’s director of cricket, Ashley Giles, denied that his involvement had been a contributory factor.”I can honestly say we’ve not considered that,” Giles told Cricinfo. “We both spoke about his decision, but he felt he had fallen into the role when [Heath] Streak left the club, and he believed now was the right time to pass the job onto someone else. Mads did a fantastic job for us for two years, and he still has a massive amount to offer the club.”Now the spotlight falls onto Westwood, 26, who endured a mixed 2008 in the Championship – 506 runs at 29.76 – but Giles was confident of the club’s decision to appoint a relatively young skipper.”Ian fulfils all the criteria you look for in a captain,” Giles told . “When he took over while Darren was injured, Ian responded in just the right way in terms of his personal performances and the team played well under him.”He is tactically very astute. It is great to have a captain who is a top bloke and a hard worker, both of which Ian is, but that extra dimension you need is the tactical one. Ian has that strand.”Westwood was understandably delighted with the news. “It is a great honour to be given this opportunity and I am thoroughly excited about the prospect,” he told the club’s website. “I had a taste of the captaincy when Darren was injured last year and am delighted to have been asked to take the role on full-time.”Under Darren the team has made real strides and it is a great time to be taking over. I am looking forward to the challenges ahead and leading Warwickshire to further success.”

Campbell on Newcastle transfer statement

Kevin Campbell has given his reaction to the transfer statement which was released by Newcastle United last week.

The Lowdown: Transfer statement

The St. James’ Park faithful released a statement shortly after the summer transfer window shut, highlighting what their intentions were.

They claimed that they wanted to take a ‘sustainable’ approach, and so any money spent on transfers would have to be generated either from player sales or through matchday and non-matchday activities.

The Latest: Campbell reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, former Everton and Arsenal striker Campbell has now claimed that the statement will only increase tensions with the fanbase:

“I think the fans have had enough.

“I say that with the utmost respect because I do respect that club a lot. They deserve better.

“They have brought one player in, Willock, and they are not improving in anything. Then a statement comes out like that, unbelievable.

“The fans have had it up to here. They just want a change, new owners and a fresh start.

“They aren’t getting that at the moment, and that’s the frustrating thing.”

The Verdict: Frustrating

It certainly is frustrating that the North East club were only able to sign one player on a permanent deal of note in Joe Willock from Arsenal, who was there on loan last season anyway.

One has to question whether the sustainability model will work out in the long-term, given that other clubs in the Premier League will no doubt be looking to strengthen their squads further over the next few seasons.

Nonetheless, the Toon Army just want to see some sort of progression, ambition and direction, and it will be difficult to get that unless they are able to sign more players to strengthen the team when the January window comes around.

Thrilled Taylor thanks Chanderpaul

After making an unexpected maiden Test century to rescue West Indies in the first Test against New Zealand, West Indies fast bowler Jerome Taylor thanked his batting partner Shivnarine Chanderpaul for advising him during their 153-run stand

After making an unexpected maiden Test century to rescue West Indies in the first Test against New Zealand, West Indies fast bowler Jerome Taylor thanked his batting partner Shivnarine Chanderpaul for some sound advice during their 153-run stand.Taylor had come to the crease with West Indies on 173 for 6 – still 192 behind New Zealand’s first-innings total – and blasted a 107-ball 106 while Chanderpaul made a more measured 76 to lift their side to 340.”Batting with Shiv gave me a lot of confidence. He supported me throughout and put faith in me from the start. He was in the middle talking to me and that helped me along the way,” he said. “I was not thinking of the hundred, I was thinking only of occupying the crease and Shiv kept telling me, just hang around and hit the bad balls. He said ‘bat and bat and bat’.”Taylor, who hadn’t even made a first-class half-century before this game, was thrilled with his effort. “Words can’t quite describe how I feel. I always knew I had it in me to make a Test century and today I proved it. Making a Test century is everyone’s dream and I have fulfilled that dream. I hope it is the first of many to come.”Eighty-six of his runs came in boundaries, including three massive sixes. “I didn’t think I had to change my style because we were in trouble. I felt I should back myself and believe in myself.”It was a very meaningful innings to the team and to me as an individual. I had to bat for the team to make sure West Indies could not lose this match. It was opportunity to show determination and guts and I got the reward.”A Test average of 13.66 may not be something to boast about but Taylor said he was working hard to improve it. “The coaches keep telling me I have the ability to be an allrounder and I’m taking my batting seriously and working very hard. I wanted to take it a step at a time, get a half-century first and try to move to a century. It all came at once today.”

E agora? Berrío 'voa' contra o Santos e aumenta concorrência no Flamengo

Ponting tempts South Africa to chase another miracle

Ricky Ponting is not known for his generosity to opposition teams but his sporting declaration has set up a fascinating final day at the SCG, where South Africa need 314 more runs with nine wickets in hand

Ricky Ponting is not known for his generosity to opposition teams but his sporting declaration has set up a fascinating final day at the SCG, where South Africa need 314 more runs with nine wickets in hand. The match is a dead rubber but that’s a deceptive term; a South African victory will bounce them up to the No. 1 Test ranking and Ponting would go down in history as the first captain to lead Australia to a 0-3 loss at home. However, for that to happen South Africa would need their third miracle of the series, almost enough to push for sainthood, and with Graeme Smith unlikely to bat their task is even tougher. Still, by Ponting’s conservative standards his decision to set the visitors 376 in nearly four full sessions was a brave one. This was a team that had chased 414 in Perth. Ponting had found the cracking surface easier than it looked in posting a half-century and Hashim Amla and Neil McKenzie also seemed relatively comfortable after coming together at 1 for 2.Morne Morkel was an odd choice to open in the absence of the injured Smith and it was a plan that took only two balls to fail. Morkel spooned his second delivery to mid-on to give Doug Bollinger his first Test wicket but it was the only reason for Australia to cheer in the final two hours. Amla and McKenzie were tested by balls that jagged off the cracks but they showed impressive concentration to survive and post a 60-run partnership.Brad Haddin put down a tough chance diving to his right when Amla was on 5 and it could yet prove a costly miss on a day when Australia had until then tightened their hold on the match. It was also a day when Matthew Hayden’s grip on his position at the top of the order weakened further. Hayden came into the game dead-batting speculation that it could be his final appearance but his inability to post a half-century in the home Tests has left him vulnerable. He did manage 39 in this innings and it was the first time this summer that he has scored more than his age, but openers are not there to post handy 30s.A few cracking drives and clips over leg hinted at a change of form but the teasing moments have been there all series and reality kicked back in when he tried to launch Morkel over mid-on and inside-edged onto his stumps. As he walked off the ground to a standing ovation, with onlookers eagle-eyed for any tip-off that he might retire, a small bat-raise was the only clue that it could have been his farewell. There was no cause for celebration but he had at least helped Australia move closer to a win or a draw.Ponting, Simon Katich, Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey all made contributions after Hayden departed but Australia’s effort was not breathtaking, it was more an innings than meandered like the snaking crack around which the batsmen played. The out-of-form Hussey was pleased not to lose his wicket and he finished unbeaten on 45, having struck a couple of boundaries that would bring him confidence. The declaration came when Clarke holed out to Paul Harris for 41, ending a 76-run stand with Hussey that had begun when Katich was lbw for 61. It was a strange dismissal: Dale Steyn came around the wicket and struck Katich in line but made no appeal whatsoever. However, Mark Boucher asked the question and Asoka de Silva made the fair call that the ball would have hit leg stump, surprising not only the batsman but the bowler as well.Katich’s innings was a tough grind, for him and the spectators. Early in the day he faced five consecutive maidens from Jacques Kallis and it took him 40 balls and nearly an hour to tick his score over from 17 to 18. Ponting was the only batsman who looked truly comfortable with the breaking surface and he launched nine boundaries, including some classic pulls and back-foot drives. He had come to the crease on a king pair and nearly completed it when he tried to leave his first delivery from Morkel but didn’t get the bat out of the way and the edge flew past the stumps and off to the boundary. Eventually it was an inside edge off Morkel that did for Ponting on 53 and he headed inside to ponder declaration times. Overnight he may wish he’d pondered for a bit longer.
