McAvennie discusses Gers and Douglas

Frank McAvennie believes Barry Douglas would jump at the chance to join Glasgow Rangers this summer.

The Lowdown: Douglas would consider Gers move

Douglas, who spent last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers from Leeds United, will be a free agent this summer after his contract ran out with the Whites (Transfermarkt).

When speaking about his next move, Douglas admitted he would consider a switch to Ibrox if the interest was there (Yorkshire Evening Post). He is a boyhood Gers fan.

The Latest: McAvennie thinks Douglas would love to join Gers

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie went one further, as he believes Douglas would jump at the chance to join the 55-time Scottish champions. He said:

“Would he go to Rangers to be a number two?

“It might be the best thing for him. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind a bit less game time if he’s at his boyhood club.

“Blackburn were alright last season so he must still be decent. He’s a Rangers boy and 31-years-old.

“If that offer from Rangers comes in, he’ll jump at it. There’s pride in wearing the jersey of your own club.

“I can see that happening if he gets the offer.”

The Verdict: Back-up is best option

Douglas has proven himself to be a solid player throughout his career. He has played both in Turkey and Poland as well as England and Scotland, and the 65 career assists he has amassed despite being a left-back indicate he has plenty to offer going forward.

At the Gers, Steven Gerrard has Borna Barisic to rely on on the left side of the back four. The 28-year-old is Croatia’s first-choice left-back – Douglas will have little chance to displace him in the starting line-up.

As a back-up option, though, he could be an interesting arrival, although he would be competing with youngster Calvin Bassey for that role.

In other news, Rangers have been urged to sign this striker.

New Zealand cricket legend Bert Sutcliffe left his impression on all who met him and it is his friendliness which his contemporaries will most remember about him

Lynn McConnell20-Apr-2001New Zealand cricket legend Bert Sutcliffe left his impression on all who met him and it is his friendliness which his contemporaries will most remember about him.Sutcliffe, 77, died in Auckland this morning after a long illness of emphysema with a more recent diagnosis of cancer. He was one of the greatest batsmen produced in New Zealand and former team-mate John Reid recalled their relationship this morning.”Bert was a lifelong friend. I started playing first-class cricket in 1947 and played with and against him for nearly the next 20 years.”We had some traumatic partnerships. In 1953/54 at Ellis Park in South Africa he got pinned by South African fast bowler Neil Adcock and was taken to hospital. I went out to bat and had to stand in a pool of his blood.”Then, on our first tour to Pakistan and India in 1955/56, we shared an unbroken stand of 222 and New Zealand finished the day 420/2. I scored a century and Bert scored a New Zealand record of 230. But he paid for it as it took a lot out of him. I had a bit more to come and go on.”When we finished the tour Bert looked like a skeleton. We came home and started a series against the West Indies but Bert had to drop out after two Tests as he wasn’t fit enough to play as a result of the Indian tour.”As a result he missed being part of our first Test victory, after 26 years of trying, when we beat the West Indies in the fourth Test. He never played in a winning Test side.”He retired after the 1958 tour, but we picked him again in 1965 to go back to India and Pakistan then on to England. We picked him to deal with their [India’s] spin bowlers and he scored another 150 in one of the Tests,” Reid said. The 1949 side has always been a close unit and has had several reunions. The last time the side was together was during the Eden Park Test against Pakistan last month and Reid spoke with Sutcliffe by telephone only a few days ago.”Bert was a dominating batsman, but graceful with it. He wasn’t a clumper like me. He was the best left-hander in the world, and that includes Neil Harvey, I’ve seen them all.”He was an entirely different batsman to Martin Donnelly who was more of a clumper. Bert was a classical left-hander and was the best around at the time,” he said.Reid recalled that he and Sutcliffe often had long talks about the state of the game and all its problems but throughout it all Sutcliffe never had a bad word to say about anybody.”We were very close mates,” Reid said.Sutcliffe’s captain from his earliest international days was Walter Hadlee and today Hadlee described Sutcliffe’s batting in one word – cultured.”He was light on his feet, swift of mind and played flowing shots, hitting through the line of the ball. He played punishing drives on either side of the wicket,” he said.Another feature about Sutcliffe that Hadlee remembered was his personality.”He was bright and cheerful, a happy bloke. He was modest and wonderful company. It was people like him who helped make the 1949 tour the success that it was.”On the ship going to England he took the physical education before breakfast and then played the piano after dinner for as long as people wanted him to continue. We were all good mates on the tour,” Hadlee said.He wasn’t only a batsman and rated his bowling.”He liked to bowl left-hand twisters as Martin Donnelly liked to call them. They were left-arm chinamen, and he had a wrong ‘un as well.”He was a brilliant field and a safe catcher in the slips, gully or leg slip areas.”Sutcliffe and Donnelly’s presence in the 1949 team had been of great worth.Hadlee recalled that it was he who converted Sutcliffe to the opening role in which he became so effective.Sutcliffe had just moved to Dunedin to take up training at the school of physical education there and having played for Auckland earlier in the season was not able to play Plunket Shield cricket for Otago. However, he was able to play for Otago against the MCC.Hadlee said: “He arrived late at the ground and when he arrived I said, ‘Bert, you and I will open the innings today.'”He said, ‘I always bat at No 5.’ And I said to him, ‘Well you can have your pick today, No 1 or No 2.'”Sutcliffe scored 197 in the first innings and 128 in the second.”For sheer brilliance the second century was better than the first. We opened together a few weeks later for New Zealand against the MCC,” he said.”He was just so fluent a player and a batsman,” Hadlee said. The chairman of New Zealand Cricket, Sir John Anderson said: “Bert Sutcliffe was a great cricketer, a person of integrity and a true gentleman. He performed remarkable feats with the bat and his courage and talent were never more obvious than during his defiant innings against the South Africans in 1953 at Ellis Park. He continued to take a genuine interest in modern day cricket and was an inspiration to many of the current New Zealand side whom he met on many occasions.”While the occasion of scoring his maiden Test century in Hobart was all a blur for Test batsman Matt Horne in 1996/97, it was typical of Sutcliffe, who was at the ground as the guest of the Australian Cricket Board, that he met Horne at the gate when he was dismissed and shook him by the hand.Horne didn’t remember the incident because of the excitement of the moment. But the president of New Zealand Cricket at the time, Iain Gallaway did as he was with Sutcliffe.”Bert had spent some time with Matt earlier and had a chat about modern players not batting through, and batting sessions.”And that was Matt did and Bert was thrilled.”When he was out for 133, Bert said to me, ‘I’d love to shake his hand.'”So I said, ‘Let’s go down and do it,’ but typically of him Bert said, ‘No I wouldn’t want to do that, not in the players’ area.'”I said to him, ‘He’d be thrilled’ but Bert said he wouldn’t. So I said to him, ‘I’m the president of New Zealand Cricket and you’re coming with me.'”We went down and Bert shook his hand, and they held hands for a long time and Bert got very emotional.”Matt said to him, ‘How the hell did you bat eight or nine hours to get that 385? I’ve only batted 300 or something [327] minutes and I’m absolutely stuffed.'”Horne recalled today that he was a bit over-awed by everything that happened. But he said he had a little to do with Sutcliffe after that innings and when he scored his century in New Zealand’s 1999 Test at Lord’s he received a fax from him.”At the time it blew me away. He congratulated me on a gutsy effort and said to make sure that we finished it off,” Horne said.New Zealand did and claimed its first victory at Lord’s.”I knew Bert but not that well, there are a lot of people who know him much better. But he was one of the trailblazers and you only have to look at the records to see just how special a player, and man, that he was.”

Spurs: Romano drops Paulo Fonseca update

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has delivered a fresh update on Tottenham Hotspur’s managerial search…

What’s the word?

On Wednesday, the BBC reported that Spurs had opened talks with former AS Roma boss Paulo Fonseca, who is available after being replaced by Jose Mourinho in May.

It was also claimed that a deal was yet to be struck and that, after the recent setback over Antonio Conte, there is wariness from the north London hierarchy.

Romano has now suggested that these negotiations are still ongoing, despite rumours speculating a three-year contract for the Portuguese coach. In response to a question on Twitter, he replied: “Fonseca still in talks… let’s see.”

Word of warning

Understandably, Spurs are to err on the side of caution over any talks, and the word that this looks to be rumbling on may be enough to worry any supporter.

The Lilywhites have been left frustrated in their attempts to find a successor to Mourinho and it is widely thought that Fonseca is actually their sixth-choice candidate, as per the Daily Mail.

Daniel Levy and co have failed with moves for Bayern Munich bound Julian Nagelsmann, Leicester City’s FA Cup-winning boss Brendan Rodgers, Erik ten Hag, Mauricio Pochettino, and of course Conte.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-manager-gossip-transfer-rumours-team-and-injury-updates-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, manager gossip, transfer rumours, team and injury updates and more!”]

At one stage, the Italian looked set to sign on the dotted line, before talks broke down at the 11th hour over concerns that the club could not match his ambition – or in other words, he would not be well-backed in the transfer market.

The longer talks drag out with Fonseca, the more doubt will start to creep in, just as it did with Pochettino and then Conte.

The prospects of this saga continuing into a second month aren’t the only reason Spurs fans should be worried – it’s the fact that he was the sixth option on the shortlist. He’s also just been replaced by the man Spurs sacked to create this vacancy.

After numerous fans recently protested against the chairman and the club’s owners, the ENIC group, this appointment is far from the inspiring sort they needed to win back their supporters.

Fonseca failed to surpass fifth in Serie A at the Stadio Olimpico and was recently embarrassed by Europa League runners up Manchester United, not to mention his daft mishap in using six subs, rather than five, during a cup defeat to Spezia.

All in all, this latest development from Romano should be enough to keep plenty in north London worried about the future.

Newcastle have £50m transfer budget

Alan Nixon has dropped the amount of cash that he believes Newcastle United have as a transfer budget for the summer window.

The Lowdown: Window open

The summer transfer window is officially open, meaning that the St. James’ Park faithful can start to look at which players they would like to bring in, and also who they would like to leave the North East.

Nonetheless, with the takeover arbitration case against the Premier League looming as well, it is set to be a very interesting one with the Tyneside club.

The Latest: £50m budget

As per reliable football journalist Alan Nixon, ‘Bruce will get a transfer war chest’ from Mike Ashley of around £50m for the window.

That, of course, could increase through player sales, as Steve Bruce’s team try to improve upon their respectable 12th-placed finish in the top flight.

The Verdict: Promising

£50m is certainly a promising figure in terms of a transfer budget for a Premier League side finishing in the bottom half of the table, and it is one that Bruce can work with.

Of course, the Magpies ideally would like to have the abundance of riches that would have come from a completed takeover, but nonetheless, it is certainly a good amount to get started.

The Toon will no doubt be looking at trying to sign Joe Willock on a permanent deal from Arsenal following his successful loan spell, and £50m would certainly give room for one of two more first-team targets, as well as the young midfielder.

Going out with a bang?

Courtney Walsh could dare we say should have his wish after all

Tony Cozier21-Apr-2001Courtney Walsh could dare we say should have his wish after all. Ifhis batsmen allow it, the great fast bowler can even have the chanceto spearhead the victory he cherishes in his farewell Test matchbefore his ardent countrymen at Sabina Park.It will mean nothing to the series, already secured by South Africa, but it would end the depressing sequence of 11 winless Tests and givethe West Indies’ most admired cricketer a fitting send-off.Walsh has already played a significant role in compensating for thefirst day failings of the batting. With the telling support from his fast bowling accomplices, MervDillon and Cameron Cuffy, that he has often lacked, the West Indiesbowled South Africa out for 141 in 61.1 overs on the second day of thefifth and final Test.It was their lowest total in 11 Tests between the teams and secured alead of 87 for the West Indies. Only a second innings capitulationwill allow this opportunity to slip and, while there have been enoughof those of late to temper optimism, the way Leon Garrick and ChrisGayle confidently batted through the last 17 overs to add 24 yesterdaywas encouraging. The situation is that the West Indies are 118 to the good on anessentially true pitch, offering some bounce and movement to thefaster bowlers but nothing extravagant. The only West Indian century-maker in the 11 Tests against SouthAfrica is Ridley Jacobs. It is time others add their name to the listand there is no more appropriate time.Even though Walsh delighted the small gathering in the morning with adelicate flick for three of Alan Donald and he and Dinanath Ramnarineadded a further 11 to the total before Walsh spooned a catch to midonfor Shaun Pollock’s fifth wicket, 225 seemed wholly inadequate. For once, Cuffy and Dillon followed Walsh’s example of unwaveringpersistency and reaped the rewards. The South Africans could not recover from a shaky start in which theylost their first four wickets for 51.The only threatening partnership of the innings was 40 for the seventhwicket between the solid topscorer Neil McKenzie and captain ShaunPollock. But once Pollock was the second of Dillon’s four victims, fending an edge to the keeper, the last four wickets tumbled for fourruns off 21 balls. The West Indies were doing unto South Africa whatothers so often do to them.Clearly enjoying himself for the last time, Walsh started SouthAfrica’s problems in the seventh over when left-handed opener GaryKirsten deflected a catch to third slip from a forcing backfoot shotfor his third 0 of the series.Kirsten began the series with 150 in the first innings of the firstTest. In eight innings since, he has managed 86.The giant Cuffy supported Walsh with an accurate opening spell thatyielded six from six overs. He and Dillon took up the attack afterlunch and inflicted the telling blows to the heart of the SouthAfrican batting.Cuffy dispatched Herschelle Gibbs with a leaping outswinger that wouldhave done justice to Walsh himself. It was too good for Gibbs, aquality batsman in good form. Jacobs lept to haul in an overheadcatch.Soon the overconfident Daryll Cullinan, the leading scorer in theseries, flashed a cut at Cuffy and Brian Lara snaffled the catch lowdown at first slip.Quarter-hour later, Jacques Kallis got such a thick inside edge intohis pad that Dillon had time to veer to his right on follow-throughand accept the return catch.Cornered at 51 for four, McKenzie and the out-of-touch Lance Klusenerset about to rebuild the innings so carefully that they eeked out nineruns from nine overs, seven maiden. At 13, McKenzie edged Cuffy a yard in front of Carl Hooper at secondslip for the first of his four fours but he and Pollock were the onlyones who seemed likely to baulk the West Indies.Klusener has had a horrid series with the bat and the only evidence ofhis hard-hitting reputation was a six over longon off Ramnarine’s legbreak. He was in for an hour and 42 balls for 15 when Walsh pluckedout his middle stump minutes prior to a break for rain and an earlytea.Twenty runs on resumption, Walsh claimed his third wicket throughGarrick’s spectacular tumble at square-leg that intercepted MarkBoucher’s pull shot.South Africa were 97 for six but they had been there before andrecovered. As McKenzie and Pollock built their stand, Pollock pulling Cuffy forsix in an over that cost 14, West Indian fears surfaced again. Theyevaporated in a jiffy.Pollock touched a good one from Dillon to Jacobs, McKenzie was lbwsweeping at a straight ball from Ramnarine, Justin Kemp spooned acatch to midon from Dillon who then finished it off through Hooper’s100th Test catch, low down at second slip off Paul Adams. It left Garrick and Gayle 17 overs to see out the day. Given Garrick’sfirst ball, first innings experience on debut, they were worryingtimes. But Garrick showed spunk in taking the first ball again. He let it go,drove the second for three and, apart from some verbal jousts with theopposition and a couple of injudicious hooks, had few problems.Neither did Gayle. It is up to them and the other batsmen to put thematch beyond South Africa.
