The ICC has given official sanction to Major League Cricket (MLC), the USA’s big leap into the world of T20 leagues, removing a significant obstacle to the league launching in July this year. A long-simmering dispute between the league’s organisers and USA Cricket, the country’s official cricket administrative body, had threatened to disrupt the league starting this year. However, USA Cricket announced on Thursday night in a brief statement that it has approved MLC as well as Minor League Cricket (MiLC), meaning that both events can go ahead as planned. Crucially, it means that ICC members are now free to issue NOCs (No Objection Certificates) to any of their players picked by MLC sides to participate in the league.”Over the past few months, we have worked diligently with Ace [American Cricket Enterprises, the parent body of MLC and MILC] to ensure that the MLC and MiLC are positioned well to support the growth of cricket in the United States,” said USA Cricket in a press release.USA Cricket had previously given sanction to MiLC, for both the 2021 and 2022 seasons, but soon after the MLC’s player draft, the ICC’s operations department sent a communication to members flagging the issue for overseas players wishing to play in both competitions. “Members may be aware of the following two events that are proposed to be played in the USA,” the ICC had said of the events, both administered by ACE, which signed a 50-year commercial rights agreement with USA Cricket in 2019.Related

“Applications for sanction have been submitted to USA Cricket, but these events have not yet been sanctioned by USA Cricket. Consequently, without a sanction from the host member, both events are currently deemed to be Disapproved Cricket and as such, Members should not issue NOCs to their players to participate in either event.”The draft, held on March 19 at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, saw stars such as Aaron Finch, Marcus Stoinis and Quinton de Kock sign for teams in the league. In total six teams will play in the 18-day event in Texas that starts from July 13 – as with several other leagues, some of the franchises are owned by owners of IPL franchises.”Last month’s historic MLC Domestic Player Draft in Houston generated incredible momentum for the inaugural Major League Cricket season this summer,” MLC tournament director Justin Geale told ESPNcricinfo following the confirmation that USA Cricket had given sanctioning approval to MLC. “Our six MLC teams will each be announcing a number of marquee international player signings in the coming weeks that will generate more excitement, and we will be sharing news on the schedule, ticket sales and broadcast details soon.”We’re now just three months away from many of the world’s best players taking the field in Texas at an outstanding new cricket venue in Grand Prairie. We can’t wait to bring the American cricket community together there and launch this ground breaking competition.”The dispute between USA Cricket and ACE which caused the delay in sanctioning MLC and MiLC stems from the original short-form agreement the two signed in 2019. In that agreement, ACE keeps 95% of all gross revenues generated by MLC while USA Cricket receives the remaining 5%, but USA Cricket has wanted to revise that for more favourable terms, before a long-form agreement is signed. USA Cricket reiterated that sentiment in Thursday’s press release.”We look forward to working with Ace to provide governance of the tournaments,” stated USA Cricket in the press release. “Finally, we will review our commercial relationship with Ace over the next few months.”

Big upgrade on Foden: Man City want to sign "world-class" £108m star

Manchester City can still finish the 2024/25 season holding the FA Cup aloft, but it’s safe to say this campaign has been an eye-opener for Pep Guardiola and Co.

Indeed, the reigning Premier League champions find themselves all the way down in an unsatisfactory fifth in the league standings, with a mammoth 22-point gap opening up between the lacklustre Citizens and Arne Slot’s seriously impressive Liverpool at the top of the tree.

Therefore, it isn’t out of the question this summer that Guardiola will rip up what was once successful at the Etihad in order to bring in some exciting new blood, with Phil Foden in danger of dropping out of the Spaniard’s first-team plans if he doesn’t improve.

The numbers behind Foden's poor form at Man City

Out with the old and in with the new could well be the mantra at City this summer with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne perhaps moving on after such a disorienting season is over and done with.

Foden is unlikely to up and leave like his Belgian teammate, but the 24-year-old is still a shadow of the skilful talent he was just last campaign when he was crowned PFA Player of the Year as Guardiola’s men romped home to yet another top-flight triumph.

Critiqued on the international stage by Roy Keane for some uninspiring showings donning England white, Foden has failed to pick up a goal or assist in Premier League action since Chelsea away in January, leading to the agile midfielder having to make do with spots on the substitute bench as of late.

While he’s not impressed on the international stage, he also needs to do more at club level. Last term the attacking midfielder found the net 27 times but in 2024/25, he’s only scored ten times.

Thus, his minutes could deplete further at City, particularly if they complete a mega-money transfer in the summer.

Man City City "want to sign" big Foden upgrade

A few tweaks here and there to the first team personnel could inspire City to get back to their best down the line, especially if they are able to sign their number one target this summer.

As per a report by Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, the bruised outfit “want to sign” Bayer Leverkusen superstar Florian Wirtz when the window reopens.

The Bundesliga side are preparing to offer Wirtz a new deal that would keep him at the club until 2028 but it will include a release clause allowing club’s to him out of that deal in a year’s time.

It should be seen as a priority on City’s end to try and snap up the services of the explosive German, with sumputous strikes such as the one below helping Leverkusen lift the Bundesliga title proudly last season.

He could well steer his new employers back to the very summit of the Premier League, therefore, but it will come at a significant cost, with Plettenberg further revealing that Xabi Alonso’s men would only consider parting ways with their electric ace if an offer around the £108m mark was made.

Away from his side being crowned champions last term, Wirtz has also torn open top-flight defences in 2024/25, with the German up to a ridiculous 27 goals and assists in all competitions next to Foden’s inferior 15.

His continued ridiculous performances for Leverkusen has even seen him branded as “world class” by 1. FC Köln boss Gerhard Struber, with Wirtz’s swagger and skill on the ball making him a perfect replacement for a declining Foden, considering he can operate either as a number ten or as a winger, much like this counterpart.

City do find themselves at a crossroads at this moment in time with some uncomfortable decisions having to be made soon over first-team stalwarts, leading to Foden being ditched potentially for Wirtz to shine.

Stubbs happy to bat time in bid to press ODI case

T20 talent developing longer-format skills as South Africa A score success in Sri Lanka

Tristan Stubbs acknowledges his fifty•Cricket South Africa

Learning to construct a 50-over innings was Tristan Stubbs’ chief takeaway from South Africa A’s series victory over Sri Lanka A, which was completed with a five-wicket win in Kandy. Stubbs was South Africa A’s highest run-scorer, and the only one to record two half-centuries, and hopes the experience will put him in good stead to add to his one ODI cap.”It’s closer to first-class cricket where you’ve got to bat time,” Stubbs told ESPNcricinfo shortly after scoring a match-winning 58 not out. “I haven’t played a lot of 50-over cricket but in this format, you absorb pressure and then apply pressure. T20 cricket you have to make a play almost every ball but in 50-over cricket and first-class cricket you can just bat time and that’s what I have really enjoyed doing.”Since starting his career three years ago, Stubbs has played 55 T20s, more than double his 21 List A matches, to go with 10 first-class games. His reputation as a big-hitter has seen him picked for the Manchester Originals in the Hundred, and Mumbai Indians at the IPL, although he has only played four matches, two in each of the last two seasons. He went straight from the IPL to Sri Lanka, keen to get game time after last turning out more than a month ago, on May 6.”It [the IPL] was an awesome tournament to be a part of, whether you are playing or not. And Mumbai made the semi-finals so I got to experience a semi-final with 100,000 people which was pretty cool,” he said. “But I hadn’t played in a couple of months so getting some game time now is good. It’s been cool to spend some time in the middle and bat again.”Especially in unfamiliar conditions. This was Stubbs’ first visit to Sri Lanka and though he has been to India three times, he found that the surfaces were different and asked more questions of his game. “It doesn’t bounce as much [as home] and the ball turns a bit more but the conditions have changed between each game,” he said. “The pitch we played on today got more and more dry and it was turning a lot more. But in the second game the ball was seaming around a lot. It’s a nice challenge.”In both matches, Stubbs scored half-centuries, first taking South Africa A from 20 for 4 to 153 for 8, albeit in a losing cause, and then ensuring they recovered from 27 for 2 in the fifth over to successfully chase 173. In both cases, Stubbs saw an opportunity to work on pacing his innings and getting the balance between attack and defence right. “We were in trouble early on. In the second game, it tested my defence of seam and today it was spinning,” he said. “And you learn it’s all right to block a good ball in the longer game. It’s not ideal, but sometimes it’s required.”With his development of a more all-round game in subcontinental batting conditions, does Stubbs hope he is making a case for consideration for this year’s World Cup? “I am trying not to think about it,” he said. “I am just trying to take every game as it comes and just enjoy playing. Today, I could help the team get over the line. We have a pretty strong side so that always helps.”South Africa A will now play unofficial Tests under the tutelage of national Test coach Shukri Conrad to complete their winter program.

Bancroft joins Warner at Thunder, Hatzoglou to Hurricanes

Bancroft and Hatzoglou both depart two-time reigning champions Perth Scorchers

Cameron Bancroft has made a bold move in the BBL leaving two-time reigning champions Perth Scorchers to join former Australia Test opening partner David Warner at Sydney Thunder on a three-year deal.Scorchers have also lost legspinner Peter Hatzoglou who has signed with Hobart Hurricanes despite being a key part of the Scorchers squad in their back-to-back titles.Bancroft was a vital cog in the Scorchers’ title last year having begun the season running the drinks after being dropped from the side during their successful 2021-22 campaign. He played the last 11 games of the season and made 357 runs at 51.00, striking at 140, including four half-centuries. He made a career-best 95 not out in the final game of the home and away season before scoring 53 not out in the Qualifier against Sydney Sixers to help Scorchers bank a home final which they won against Brisbane Heat. But despite one of his best-ever BBL seasons, and being third all-time on Scorchers’ career runscorers list, the depth of top-order batting at Scorchers saw Bancroft look elsewhere for more long-term contract security. He was courted by a number of clubs but has landed at Thunder where he looks set to play alongside Warner again despite the pair’s strained relationship dating back to the Sandpaper incident in Cape Town in 2018 when the pair were Test opening partners. They have since opened the batting together for Australia in the 2019 Ashes but the Sandpaper incident and long-term fallout still casts a shadow over the pair.Peter Hatzoglou bowls•Cricket Australia via Getty Images

Meanwhile, Hatzoglou has also left Scorchers to join Hurricanes for the upcoming BBL season. Hatzoglou joined Scorchers ahead of the 2021-22 season after crossing from Melbourne Renegades. He was a key part of Scorchers’ 2021-22 title where they played almost entirely on the east coast of Australia during the Covid-19-affected season. Scorchers played two spinners for most of that season and Hatzoglou formed a formidable partnership with Ashton Agar in the middle overs, including taking 1 for 13 from three overs in the 2021-22 final against Sydney Sixers. But he played just 10 matches last season and was not in the XI for the winning final as Perth opted for a four-pronged pace attack and a spinning allrounder in Cooper Connolly at No.7 on their fast, bouncy home track at Perth Stadium.Hurricanes look set to use Hatzoglou alongside unusual left-arm orthodox spinner Paddy Dooley who had a breakout season last year.”I’m really excited for my next chapter in the BBL with the Hurricanes,” Hatzoglou said.”I’m one of those players whose career has followed a more non-traditional path to get to the point I’m at now, so I’m just really thankful for every opportunity that comes my way.”Watching from afar over the past couple of seasons, it is obvious that the Hurricanes have pretty much all the right ingredients within their program already. I’m looking forward to coming in, getting to know some of the guys and the staff a bit better, and contributing whatever small part I can to hopefully the ultimate on-field success.”Hatzoglou has been playing in the T20 Blast in England for Glamorgan recently after being drafted in as an overseas replacement for Australia quick Michael Neser.Out of contract West Australian left-arm swing bowler Joel Paris is set to leave Hurricanes and is set to sign with Melbourne Stars. Paris played just 12 matches in two seasons with Hobart after previously playing 25 games with Perth Scorchers. He is likely to be reunited with former WA and Scorchers teammate Nathan Coulter-Nile who is set to sign a one-year contract extension with Stars for BBL 13 after his previous four-year deal expired at the end of last season.Sydney Thunder BBL 13 squad: Cameron Bancroft, Ollie Davies, Matt Gilkes, Chris Green, Nathan McAndrew, Blake Nikitaras, Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Gurinder Sandhu, Jason Sangha, Tanveer Sangha, David WarnerHobart Hurricanes BBL 13 squad: Tim David, Paddy Dooley, Nathan Ellis, Caleb Jewell, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Mitch Owen, Billy Stanlake, Matthew Wade

INEOS now serious about signing "amazing" ace as Man Utd plot £17m discount

Aiming to rebuild their current side in the vision of Ruben Amorim, INEOS and Manchester United are now reportedly serious about signing one particular midfielder amid a potential £17m discount this summer.

Man Utd plot £17m discount

As Sir Jim Ratcliffe continues to cut costs, it’s fair to say that Manchester United’s financial problems are no secret these days. However, the British billionaire has made it pretty clear that any money made by the club is likely to be reinvested into Amorim’s side rather than what he sees as needless costs – and that could yet see the Red Devils enjoy a busy summer.

Thrives in a back three: Man Utd make contact to sign "impressive" £25m ace

He could solve Amorim’s biggest problem.

ByTom Cunningham Mar 28, 2025

The reports have already been coming thick and fast, with names such as Ardon Jashari and Hugo Ekitike threatening to steal the headlines as of late. The latter would be a particularly impressive signing given the growing interest in his signature and the form that he has found himself in at Eintracht Frankfurt this season.

It’s not just Amorim’s frontline which needs key reinforcements, however. As Kobbie Mainoo continues to deliberate over signing a new deal at the club, those at Old Trafford have also set their sights on a potential replacement who’d also be an upgrade on Manuel Ugarte.

According to Stretty News, INEOS are now serious about signing Morten Hjulmand this summer, with Manchester United plotting to land a £17m discount for his signature.

Morten Hjulmand in action.

The Sporting CP midfielder’s valuation is reportedly set as high as €80m (£67m), but Manchester United believe they can negotiate a deal worth just €60m (£50m) this summer in what would be quite the coup.

Amorim already knows Hjulmand well from his Sporting days, of course, and could now be reunited with his former midfielder at a much-needed time. The Dane’s arrival would undoubtedly go a long way towards fixing United’s midfield.

"Amazing" Hjulmand is better than Ugarte

Despite only signing Ugarte last year in a transfer saga which lasted almost the entirety of the summer, Manchester United could be about to sign an impressive upgrade on the former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder. However, whether that means a new partner for last summer’s arrival or a place on Amorim’s bench remains to be seen.

Compared to the current Manchester United man, Hjulmand has enjoyed a better pass percentage, more key passes per 90 and has been dispossessed fewer times on average, according to WhoScored. Going forward, in particular, the Sporting star would make a far greater impact on a blunt United side compared to the safer Ugarte.

Dubbed “amazing value for money” by analyst Ben Mattinson when discussing Sporting’s deal to sign the Dane, it’s now Manchester United who are looking to land a discounted deal and welcome Hjulmand.
