Blessing Muzarabani, Craig Ervine, Sikandar Raza hand Zimbabwe only second Super League win

Quick’s four-for followed half-centuries from the two batters, as Zimbabwe win first outright ODI since 2019

Zimbabwe have claimed their first outright ODI win in their last 15 matches dating back to April 2019, and have gained ten crucial points on the World Cup Super League. Half-centuries from Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza took them to a competitive total in the first ODI in Belfast, and required Ireland to pull off their highest successful chase against them before a strangling bowling effort sealed Zimbabwe’s win.Blessing Muzarabani, Wellington Masakadza and Sean Williams took seven wickets for 41 runs in the last ten overs, as Ireland went from a challenging but doable position of needing 81 runs in the last 12 overs to eventually falling 38 short. Muzarabani, who used the short ball to good effect, was the pick of the bowlers with his third haul of four wickets or more in his 25-match ODI career. In the end, Ireland were left lamenting their slow start, which saw the required run rate pop above six as early as the 19th over. They were 79 for 1 at that stage, having lost Paul Stirling leg before against Masakadza after he was the major contributor to a 64-run opening stand with William Porterfield. Still, the pair gave Ireland a solid foundation to build their chase.Andy Balbirnie did not last too long either, and was bowled by Madhevere, whose offbreak snuck through the Irish captain’s bat-pad gap. Ireland were 109 for 2 at the halfway stage and needed to up the ante. They had the personnel – an anchor in Porterfield, who reached 50 off 78 balls, and an aggressor in Harry Tector – and seemed to have a plan. Porterfield took on short balls from Richard Ngarava, and used his feet and the sweep shot well against the spinners. The pair put on 71 for the third wicket before Porterfield pulled a short delivery from Luke Jongwe to fine leg, where Dion Myers juggled the ball, which dropped out of his hands and onto his shoulder on first attempt, before catching it.Sikandar Raza helped Zimbabwe post 83 runs in the last 8.4 overs•Sportsfile via Getty Images

In Tector and George Dockrell, Ireland had two energetic run-scorers at the crease, and they both showed some intent. But Ervine had kept plenty of overs in hand for Muzarabani and Masakadza, and they turned out to be his trump cards. Muzarabani took a wicket with the third ball of his second spell when Dockrell chased a wide delivery and edged behind, a dismissal that was confirmed on review. In his next over, Muzarabani had Simi Singh caught at cover off a leading edge, with Ireland starting to wobble.Their required run rate had reached eight, but Tector was still on hand. He brought up 50 off 53 balls but was out three balls later, edging an attempted slog sweep off Williams to Muzarabani at short third man. Williams also had Andy McBrine caught behind, before Muzarabani and Masakadza finished it off. Ireland were bowled out inside 49 overs to give Zimbabwe a comfortable win.Though Zimbabwe may have been relatively pleased with their batting effort, they could have been eyeing a total closer to 300, after reaching 85 for 1 in the first 14 overs. Brendan Taylor was well set on 49 off 44 balls after starting his innings slowly, and had put on 71 with Ervine, but the former captain played a reckless shot to the first ball of spin in the innings when he swept Simi to deep square leg to put the breaks on a strong start. After Taylor’s dismissal, Simi and McBrine bowled in tandem for 16 overs and gave away just 39 runs. In that time, Myers was dismissed when he top-edged McBrine to Lorcan Tucker, while Williams battled to get to 20 off 45 balls, with only 14 scoring shots. Zimbabwe immediately found reprieve when the spin duo had bowled out, and so Josh Little, who had had a hapless afternoon and finished with figures of 1 for 78 from nine overs, returned. While all of Ireland’s seamers were guilty of bowling too full, Little was the worst offender. He enjoyed some reward when he bowled Williams with a cutter, though that only brought Zimbabwe’s most aggressive batter, Raza, to the crease. By that point, Ervine had reached fifty and was ready to accelerate, as the pair put on 32 runs in 29 balls to get Zimbabwe back on track for 250-plus.Ervine played one big shot too many when he hit Dockrell straight to cover, but Raza first combined with Wessley Madhevere and then Jongwe to help Zimbabwe post 83 runs in the 8.4 overs after Ervine was dismissed. Raza finished unbeaten on 59 off 44 balls, his 18th ODI half-century.Despite the win, Zimbabwe remain in last position on the World Cup Super League points table, with the same number of points as Netherlands – on 20. However, they have the opportunity to gain ground in the rest of the series.

High-flying Scotland look to take another step towards Super 12s

Big picture Scotland are on a high, and a win on Tuesday could take them a step closer to the Super 12s. Papua New Guinea are a loss away from an early exit, less than 48 hours after their maiden T20 World Cup outing against Oman. That realisation can be disconcerting, but it’s the reality of the format; only two teams from the pool can qualify into the next round. Both sides have been in Oman for over a month. There’s a sense of familiarity now, with Scotland and PNG having played each other in two 50-over matches and a T20I in the last three weeks alone. Scotland won comfortably each time but are aware of the fickle nature of the format. All PNG need is to look to their opponents, who toppled in-form Bangladesh on Sunday, for inspiration. Both sides need their batters to fire. In their opening game, PNG lost two wickets for no runs, while Scotland stuttered to 53 for 6. Where Scotland did remarkably well, though, was in trying to remain positive in good batting conditions, instead of being bogged down by the scorecard, with Chris Greaves and Mark Watt leading the turnaround.PNG were in an excellent position to up the tempo courtesy a half-century stand between Assad Vala and Charles Amini, but couldn’t find the finishing kick against Oman, hurtling to a 129 which they felt was at least 25 short. With the ball, they couldn’t work up any rhythm and were let down by the fielders. Tuesday calls for a massive lift if they are to remain alive in the competition.Related

Players to watch That PNG are here for their first World Cup is largely down to Norman Vanua’s blistering half-century that brought them back from the brink of an exit in their penultimate game of the qualifying tournament in 2019. On Sunday, Vanua, an allrounder, fell for just 1 against Oman. Can he deliver in a must-win?Fast bowler Safyaan Sharif was tasked with closing out the game for Scotland against Bangladesh. Needing to defend 24 off the final over, he conceded 18. Barring the final delivery that was banged in short, he attempted a yorker for each of the five previous deliveries, missing his mark thrice. End result was figures of 3-0-26-0. He has been wicketless in each of Scotland’s previous four T20Is. Tuesday may offer him another opportunity to change that in a game that could potentially put them into the Super 12s. Form Guide Scotland: WLWLL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
PNG: LLLLW Stats that matter Vanua, who didn’t bowl a single over in PNG’s opening loss to Oman, is the country’s leading T20I wicket-taker with 35 scalps. George Munsey holds the record for the second-most sixes in a T20I innings after Aaron Finch. He struck 14 of them in his 56-ball 127 not out for Scotland against Netherlands in September 2019. His strike rate of 153 is also the highest for a Scotland batter who has made at least 500 runs. Richie Berrington’s 63 consecutive appearances for Scotland is the most for any player in T20Is. 5 potential replacements for Mohamed Salah at Liverpool

Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool is currently shrouded in uncertainty. The Egyptian forward, who is the Reds’ top Premier League goalscorer of all time, is now in the final year of his contract at Anfield, and with time ticking away, is yet to pen an extension.

According to Salah himself, that’s because Liverpool haven’t asked him to. “No one at the club has spoken to me about contracts, so I’m just like, ‘OK, I’m playing my last season’ and see what happens at the end of the season,” the 32-year-old said back in September after Liverpool beat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford.

“It’s not up to me but nobody talked to me about a contract with the club. We’ll see,” he teased.

ByBarney Lane Oct 17, 2024

While Salah’s comments last month suggest he wants to stay put at Liverpool, the club are still yet to make their move, and soon, the vultures will no doubt start circling.

And if Salah really is to leave Anfield in the summer, manager Arne Slot will need to find a suitable replacement. Given Salah has been one of the world’s best players for the past decade and is still going strong, that will be a hard task.

Here are five players who might be able to help fill the void Salah leaves behind.

1 Mohammed Kudus West Ham United

West Ham forward Mohammed Kudus.

Mohammed Kudus joined West Ham United from Ajax in the summer of 2023 for a fee of £38m.

In his debut season at the London Stadium, he proved that he was more than worth that hefty fee, scoring 14 and assisting 8 in all competitions as the Hammers made it to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Proving he was worth more than his impressive statistics, the Ghanaian’s powerful running, neat footwork, first touch and his ability to find the net from almost any position also caught the eye.

With West Ham struggling desperately this term under Julen Lopetegui, it wouldn’t be surprising if clubs, including Liverpool, came sniffing around in either January or next year. Football Transfers linked the Reds with a big-money swoop in the summer, so there appears to be interest in the midfielder.

However, should they table an offer, they’ll have to pay a huge sum for the 24-year-old. According to Football Insider, Kudus has a release clause set at £85m.

2 Omar Marmoush Eintracht Frankfurt

The last time Liverpool signed an Egyptian forward, it worked out pretty well, and according to a recent report from German journalist Patrick Berger, the Reds could be looking to do the same again should Salah leave.

Berger reported in October that the Premier League giants were keeping tabs on Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush as a replacement for his compatriot.

At the time of writing Marmoush tops the Bundesliga’s goals and assists charts this season, having scored nine goals and registered four assists in just seven top-flight games, averaging a strike every 66 minutes. The 25-year-old has also been linked with Chelsea.

Marc Guehi transfer news: Latest updates on Newcastle and Liverpool target

Marc Guehi has been a man in demand over the last few months – here are the latest rumours surrounding the Crystal Palace star.

ByBarney Lane Oct 17, 2024 3 Rodrygo Real Madrid

According to reports in Spain, Liverpool boss Slot sees Real Madrid winger Rodrygo as the “ideal candidate” to replace Salah at Anfield.

Like the Egyptian, Rodrygo is a pacy and skilful right-winger with a good eye for goal. In the 227 games he’s played for Real Madrid since joining them from Santos in 2019, he’s scored 57 goals.

The Brazilian has been most effective in the Champions League, scoring 20 goals in 50 games. However, while he’s been a solid contributor for Los Blancos over the years, Rodrygo has fallen down the pecking order at the Bernabeu this season due to the arrival of Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain.

He’s still playing regularly, but there are signs he’s unhappy. Back in August, he was forced to delete a message on his official WhatsApp channel in which he appeared to take issue with Madrid fans giving the trio of Jude Bellingham, Mbappe, and Vinicius Jr. the nickname “The BMV.”

“They are going to have to add the R of Rodrygo to that acronym,” he wrote.

4 Johan Bakayoko PSV Eindhoven

Johan Bakayoko for PSV

While the name Johan Bakayoko might not have the same brand power as Rodrygo or Mohamed Kudus, it’s one that is on the lips of many European clubs, Liverpool included.

Aged just 21, the Belgian winger has already established himself as one of the Eredivisie’s top players. Last season, he scored 14 goals and registered 14 assists in all competitions for PSV, helping guide the team to its 25th Eredivisie title and first since 2018.

Liverpool boss Slot will know all too well just how good he is, having come up against him on six occasions while in charge of Feyenoord.

5 Khvicha Kvaratskhelia Napoli

Napoli forwardKhvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia being nicknamed “Kvaradona” should tell all you need to know about the Georgian wizard.

After impressing as a youngster with various clubs in Russia, Kvaratskhelia joined Napoli in 2022. In his debut season in Italy, he scored 12 goals and produced 13 assists in Serie A as Napoli lifted the league title for the first time in 33 years.

Last season, despite Napoli struggling, he impressed again with 11 goals and 8 assists, while this term, he’s got five goal involvements in seven games.

It’s not just Diego Maradona Kvaratskhelia has been likened to, either. Amid reports that he was close to joining Manchester United in 2023, Italian football legend Christian Vieri also compared him to one of the Red Devils’ best-ever players.

“If he goes to Manchester United, the times of George Best come back,” he told Bobo TV. “Kvaratskhelia is the same.”

According to Football Insider, he was linked with a summer move to Liverpool. Whether a move in the post-Salah era materialises remains to be seen, but Reds fans will be hoping that if Kvaratskhelia does arrive at Anfield, he can add the Egyptian’s name to the growing list of legendary stars he’s already been likened to.

Ipswich hit gold selling a future European Champion for 1624% profit

It’s been a roller coaster few years for Ipswich Town, rising from the ashes of relegation to the third tier all the way back to the top flight for the first time in over two decades.

However, while there have been plenty of ups and downs for the Tractor Boys in recent memory, the club have signed and sold on several serious talents.

In fact, even though Ipswich have spent a considerable period outside the Premier League, they have made some sizable sales in recent years, including one star who became a European Champion.

Ipswich's biggest sales

So, before we get onto the star in question who netted the club a massive profit before lifting a European title, let’s look at the two most significant sales in the club’s history.

The first is England international and Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings, who joined the Blues from non-league side Chippenham for £10k in December 2012.

Over the next two-and-a-half seasons, the Bath-born star would make 63 appearances for the then Championship side, mostly as a left-back, before being sold on to Bournemouth in July 2015 for a fee of around £8m, which led to a rather nice profit on the £10k he initially cost the club.

Just behind the 31-year-old on the list is a player who, unfortunately, hasn’t had quite as successful a career: Conor Wickham.

The Hereford-born poacher, who is currently without a team, came up through the ranks of the club’s academy, and between July 2009 and July 2011, scored 15 goals and provided four assists in 72 games for the Suffolk side before being sold to Sunderland for a fee also believed to be in the region of £8m at the time.

Unfortunately for Wickham, he never really found his footing at any of the clubs he went on to play for, unlike one of the club’s other greatest sales.

Aaron Cresswell's sale

The player in question is veteran defender Aaron Cresswell, who joined Ipswich for free in the summer of 2011 from Tranmere Rovers.

However, because he was under 24 then, the club had to pay the Merseysiders compensation, which Transfermarkt claims to be around €275k, or about £229k.

Over the next few seasons, the Liverpool-born star would make a whopping 138 appearances for the Tractor Boys, in which he’d score seven goals and rack up a seriously impressive haul of 25 assists, meaning that he averaged a goal involvement once every 4.31 games during his time in blue.

Unsurprisingly, such impressive form eventually caught the attention of teams in the Premier League, and in July 2014, West Ham United brought the Englishman to East London in a deal that Transfermarkt claims was worth €4.75m, which converts to about £3.95m, or in other words, a massive 1624% increase on the fee he was signed for.

In the decade since, the 34-year-old has become something of a legend for the Hammers, making 353 appearances for the club, in which he has scored 11 goals, provided 37 assists, and, most importantly of all, played a vital role in the club’s Europa Conference League triumph in the 22/23 season, playing 517 minutes of action across seven games.

Ultimately, selling Cresswell to West Ham in 2014 worked out best for all parties, as Ipswich made a tidy profit, the Hammers picked up a loyal servant, and the player himself became a European Champion.

The LV= Insurance County Championship will return to a two-division structure from next season, reverting back to the split that was due to come in before the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The decision, voted for by the first-class counties after discussions with the ECB, means that Nottinghamshire will go into Division Two next year – despite finishing third overall in 2021 and missing out on the title by a handful of points – and the 2019 promotions of Lancashire, Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire will stand. There will be ten teams in Division One and eight in Division Two, a decision that was agreed in 2018, with each county playing 14 games. A seeding system is to be implemented in Division One, where the two additional teams will make for an asymmetric fixture list. One proposal that was put to the counties was for the conference system to remain for another year – however, a vote on the matter last month was pushed back, with the expectation that it would not achieve the 12 votes required to pass.Related

Warwickshire claim Bob Willis crown as Mark Robinson achieves dream county return

Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket, Mick Newell, said that while the club were disappointed at the outcome they were committed to taking on the challenge of pushing for promotion to in 2022.”We had hoped that the proposal put forward to play another year of first-class cricket in conferences, with the finishing positions to determine the divisional structure for 2023, would gain sufficient support,” Newell said. “However, following the vote, that was not the outcome and consequently we will play our cricket in Division Two next year.”This is, of course, disappointing, but it in no way takes away from the achievements of our squad in the first-class game over the past two years, which culminated in a top three finish in Division One in 2021.”We expect some very competitive cricket to be played in the second division in 2022, the challenge of achieving promotion is significant and that will be a key focus for us heading into the new season.”The Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) said that it backed the move, with 67% of men’s players surveyed in August supportive of two divisions.Rob Lynch, the PCA’s chief executive, said: “The PCA is supportive of the return to a two-divisional structure for the LV= Insurance County Championship, with the decision made following player consultation.”We acknowledge that there was no perfect solution across our membership and some teams and players will be disappointed. However, with 67% of our current male professionals stating they wanted a return to two divisions as soon as possible, this was the best outcome for our members.”The PCA is comfortable with the consultation and voting process in line with ECB Constitution and we look forward to returning to two divisions in first-class cricket in 2022 and beyond.”A switch back to two divisions had been widely anticipated after two summers in which Covid had forced restructuring. Last year was the first in which the Championship was not played since World War 2, with the Bob Willis Trophy – featuring three regional groups and a final at Lord’s – taking its place in a truncated calendar. In 2020, the teams were organised into three conferences, playing for qualification into one of three divisions. The winners of Division One, Warwickshire, claimed the Championship pennant and then played Lancashire for the Bob Willis Trophy. The question of contesting the trophy in 2022 has not yet been resolved. The ECB remains in discussions with Willis’ family about the best way to continue to celebrate the former England fast bowler’s life, with the event having been used to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer, but it is unlikely to return as an end-of-season fixture after the anticlimax of Warwickshire’s innings victory over Lancashire, which was the first time first-class cricket had been played in England in October since 1864.The ECB is aiming to announce county fixtures for 2022 no earlier than the end of November.County Championship 2022Division One: Essex, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Kent, Lancashire, Northamptonshire, Somerset, Surrey, Warwickshire, Yorkshire

"Terrific" £25,000-p/w Everton ace may miss Southampton after latest update

In search of extending their current unbeaten run to six games, Everton may have to cope without one of their most in-form players against Southampton this weekend following Sky Sports’ latest update.

Everton transfer news

The Toffees have turned a corner under Sean Dyche in recent weeks just when an eventual place in the Premier League’s bottom three looked inevitable following a disastrous start. Now five games unbeaten, with two wins and three draws in that time, Everton sit five points clear of the dropzone and as many as eight points ahead of bottom side Southampton, who they face this weekend.

In another winnable game, Dyche could see his side move into the comforts of mid-table in a crucial step towards the level that the Toffees will be desperate to return to, especially when The Friedkin Group complete their takeover of the club.

Southampton, meanwhile, will be in a desperate mood of their own after failing to pick up a single victory in any of their opening nine league games. In pursuit of what would be a crucial three points, however, they’ve been handed a major boost courtesy of recent injury news coming out of Merseyside.

According to Sky Sports’ James Savundra, Dwight McNeil is now a doubt to face Southampton after missing Thursday’s training session. The winger was forced to come off through injury against Fulham last time out and is seemingly still struggling to get back to full fitness in time for this weekend’s clash.

Savundra confirmed the news after McNeil was not spotted in Everton training by the on-watching cameras.

If he is to miss the Southampton game in the coming days, then those at Goodison Park will be hoping to see their in-form star return for their trip to face West Ham United next weekend.

"Terrific" McNeil hit form at the perfect time

Just as Everton were struggling in the early stages of the campaign, McNeil hit form at the perfect time before injury seemingly stopped him in his tracks. The Toffees’ talisman, with three goals and three assists in nine Premier League games so far this season, McNeil has become more important than ever under Dyche in Merseyside.

His recent form wouldn’t have come as a surprise to the Everton boss, however, who praised the £25,000-a-week winger at the end of last season. Dyche told reporters as relayed by the Liverpool Echo: “He’s been terrific since I’ve been back with him and I want him to keep enjoying his football but also taking it on. I thought at Brighton he took it on.

“He is a player who is still maturing in my view and he is grasping and grabbing it and taking things forward and making things happen and that is very pleasing for him and pleasing for us.”
