Formal talks held: Newcastle take first steps to sign £7,500-p/w defender

Newcastle United have reportedly opened talks over signing another defender this summer as Eddie Howe looks to bolster his backline ahead of the new Premier League season.

Business slow for Newcastle United

As it stands, Newcastle United will be heading into their Premier League opener against newly promoted Southampton with just four new faces in their ranks.

Two of those, goalkeeping pair John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos, are unlikely to see too much first team action barring an injury to no.1 Nick Pope, with the Greek shot-stopper having been signed as part of a deal to sell promising talent Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest.

Elsewhere, they have added free agent Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth to bolster their backline, while William Osula has also arrived from Sheffield United in a deal worth £10m.

Though both deals may prove shrewd, they are far less than what was expected on Tyneside given the Saudi Arabian ownership of the club. They have, however, been boosted by the return of Sandro Tonali from a gambling ban, with the club's record signing available to return to action from the end of August in a move that will help ease midfield concerns for the Magpies.

Meanwhile, they are locked in talks over a deal to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, having had two bids turned down for his services so far. Earlier in the week, Palace chairman Steve Parish was bullish over his defender, who is refusing to sign a new contract at Selhurst Park.

"Nobody has got to the valuation yet. If you want a superstar player you need to pay superstar money," he explained. "It's not near the point where we have to make a decision. We love having him and would love to keep him. If someone else wants to have him they need to make it really difficult for us. He's a generational talent."

Newcastle continue to push for his signature, and have now kick started a move for another defensive target.

Magpies make contact over Ligue 1 centre-back

That comes in the 6 foot 3 shape of Toulouse centre-back Logan Costa, who Eddie Howe's side have been linked with several times this summer. The 23-year-old is down to the final two years of his £7,500 per week deal in the south of France, and has been linked with moves to West Ham, Bologna and the Magpies.

Valued at between €18m and €20m (£15.4m-£17.1m) by his club, Newcastle have now taken the first official step towards his potential arrival.

That comes as Bologna local media [via Sport Witness] claim that Howe's side have now made "first formal contact" over a deal for the defender as they pursue a deal – the Italian press are following the deal due to Bologna's own interest.

Any move for Costa alongside Guehi would be a strange one in the long term, with Fabian Schar, Sven Botman and Jamal Lascelles all already at the club as well as new signing Kelly, despite Botman and Lascelles currently recovering from injury and expected back later in the season.

As the Magpies head into the new campaign with no backup options to Kelly and Schar, though, it makes a lot of sense for their immediate results.

Haris Sohail out of England tour with hamstring injury

He will return to Lahore to undergo a four-week rehabilitation programme at the high performance centre

Haris Sohail has been ruled out of the England tour with a grade 3 hamstring injury and will return to Lahore by the first available flight to undergo a four-week rehabilitation programme at the high performance centre. He was meant to make a comeback in ODIs after he was dropped last year after the Zimbabwe series.Pakistan have not named a replacement because they are carrying a large squad and have the options of Sohaib Maqsood, Saud Shakeel and Agha Salman to fill in.Sohail was dropped from the Test side as well after the New Zealand tour earlier this year and since then he only played four List A games – for Balochistan – in January. He scored an unbeaten century in four games in the Pakistan Cup, scoring 164 runs but he missed a big chunk of the tournament when he was in New Zealand. He was picked for the ODIs in England after missing out in the series against South Africa.Pakistan landed in England on June 25, started training on June 28, and Sohail complained about a strain in his leg muscle after two net sessions. He pulled out of the first intra-squad practice game on July 1 and later missed the second one as well. An MRI scan on Wednesday confirmed he had a tear in his hamstring. The PCB said he sustained the injury during a training session in Derby last week.”I was keenly looking forward to the ODIs as part of my objective to contribute in the side’s success and also cement my position in the side,” Sohail said after being ruled out of the tour. “I am disappointed that my tour has been cut short, but I will return to Lahore and undergo a rehabilitation programme so that I can fully recover for the 2021-22 season.”Sohail, who made his international debut in 2013, is considered one of the finest batters in Pakistan but was never able to cement his place. In 2015, he was “spooked” in his Christchurch hotel room and he returned home without playing for Pakistan after the frightful experience.Earlier this year he was named in the Test squad for New Zealand, but he missed the training sessions and practice match owing to a thumb injury. He later turned up to play both the Tests and scored 3, 9, 1 and 15 before being dropped across formats. In the last eight years, he has played 16 Tests (847 runs at 32.57), 42 ODIs (1685 at 46.80) and 14 T20Is (210 at 19.09, strike rate of 102.94).Last year he pulled out of the England tour due to the Covid-19 pandemic as he decided not to stay in isolation, which was a mandatory quarantine period for all foreigners travelling to the UK.Pakistan’s three-match ODI series begins later today in Cardiff, which will be followed by three T20Is on July 16, 18 and 20. The side will depart for the West Indies on July 21 where they will play five T20Is and two Tests from July 27 to August 24.

Middlesex prove a tougher match-up for Hampshire

Five wickets in afternoon session peg back hosts, who had won by an innings at Leicestershire

If you’re only as good as your last result, then the gulf between Hampshire and Middlesex was looking pretty wide coming into his match. Hampshire won by an innings away to Leicestershire in the opening round, three players bringing up hundreds (including a James Vince double) on the way to 612 for 5 declared; Middlesex, meanwhile, squandered more than one winning position before ultimately surrendering to Somerset in a topsy-turvy encounter at Lord’s.But the first day of this contest in Southampton produced an even tussle for ascendency between two teams blessed with several cricketers of international standard, including half a dozen who have worn whites for England. Middlesex’s depth of seam bowling kept them in the hunt after Hampshire had chosen to bat, with five wickets during the afternoon session helping to peg the hosts back after a steady start.Never mind form, recent history was arguably even more in Hampshire’s favour. Two years ago, when Hampshire finished third in Division One of the Championship, Middlesex were left mugging along third from bottom in the second tier. Though Stuart Law has seen results with the London side improve since that summer, his first as head coach, a hard-fought contest at Radlett in last year’s Bob Willis Trophy went the way of Hampshire by three wickets. For the second week running, Vince won the toss – but this time there was to be no run deluge on a greenish Ageas Bowl surface, with fifties from Ian Holland and Sam Northeast the acme of their investment from 98 overs of batting. Hampshire dug out solid foundations, 77 for 1 at lunch and 191 for 4 shortly before tea, but Middlesex’s four-pronged seam attack remained disciplined throughout and earned reward for their persistence. The dismissal of Vince, coming in off the back of 231 at Grace Road, went some way to summing up both Hampshire’s position at the end of day one, and his own status in English batting folklore. Holland had just been chiselled out by Toby Roland-Jones after a dogged innings – his first fifty in 15 innings going back to 2019 – and Vince walked out with his side 128 for 3 and in need of an innings of substance. Instead, there nine balls of Vince doing Vincey things: a couple of breezy boundaries off Martin Andersson, either side of a cheeky play and miss, before he flirted with a short wide one and sent a top edge to slip.Vince kicked the air, his frustration palpable. “I guess you’ve got to say it was a bit loose, really,” sighed Dave Allen, the Hampshire cricket historian, on the club’s livestream, in the manner of someone who has had to deliver similar verdicts rather more often than they would have liked. Northeast’s demise a little later on, feathering a cut to another innocuous Andersson delivery, belonged in the same category.Middlesex were always likely to have provided a greater test for Hampshire’s batsmen than a callow Leicestershire bowling unit had managed last week; Roland-Jones was an England Test seamer of burgeoning repute before a succession of untimely injuries interrupted his progress, while Law was also able to bring in Steven Finn for his first first-class appearance since 2019. Tim Murtagh and Tom Helm made way, with Andersson stepping up as fourth seamer and the legspin of Nathan Sowter – whose googly accounted for Lewis McManus – also favoured.Finn made important breakthroughs and looked increasingly in rhythm after an expensive opening. He dismissed Hampshire’s two other Grace Road centurions in Tom Alsop, who top-edged a pull at his first ball after lunch, and Liam Dawson, caught at midwicket off a leg-stump half-volley. In between times there was a hostile spell that saw both Holland beaten and Northeast squared up, a sign that there remains gas in the tank for Finn at 32, half a lifetime on from his prodigious arrival on the scene for Middlesex. There was also some Ethan Bamber-boozlement for Hampshire to contend with, the man nicknamed “Mini Murtagh” doing a passable impression of his senior colleague with his control and subtle movement. Opener Joe Weatherley probably does not often have to contend with the keeper standing up to the stumps inside the first hour, and he was sufficiently foxed to stumble out of his crease, allowing John Simpson’s fast hands to finish the job; Bamber then came back later in the day to strike with the second new ball.Hampshire’s position could have been trickier had Max Holden not put down Holland on 9, off the bowling of Roland-Jones, and they were also grateful for Kyle Abbott lasting more than 100 balls while helping to add 60 useful runs for the eighth and ninth wickets during the final session. Abbott missed the 2020 summer due to the effects of the pandemic but any intel gathered on the nature of this Ageas Bowl surface may help tip the balance once again when Hampshire come to bowl.

Farke could land his own Raphinha in Leeds swoop for "electric" wizard

Leeds United have less than two weeks to make additions to their squad before the summer transfer window officially slams shut on Friday night of next week.

The Whites have added back-up goalkeeper Alex Cairns, central defender Joe Rodon, midfielder Joe Rothwell, and right-back Jayden Bogle to their squad so far.

Meanwhile, Charlie Cresswell, Glen Kamara, Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville, and Georginio Rutter – who is set to join Brighton for £40m – have moved on, or are about to move.

In the 2023/24 Championship campaign, Summerville produced 19 goals and nine assists and Rutter racked up six goals and 15 assists for the West Yorkshire outfit.

Georginio Rutter

They made a huge impact in the final third for Leeds in their pursuit of promotion from the second tier, and the club have yet to replace that in the transfer market.

The Whites have not added a single new winger, attacking midfielder, or striker to the squad to make up for the goals and assists they have lost/are about to lose.

However, there is still time left in the window for the 49ers and Daniel Farke to pull something out of the bag and they have recently been linked with a Championship operator who could be the German's own Raphinha.

Raphinha's brilliance with Leeds

Firstly, it is worth remembering just how brilliant the Brazilian magician was for the club during his two-year spell at Elland Road under Marcelo Bielsa and Jesse Marsch.

Former sporting director Victor Orta moved to sign the young winger from Rennes ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, following the team's promotion from the Championship, and he made an instant impact in Yorkshire.

Raphinha was a constant threat at the top end of the pitch and got supporters off their seats with his exciting and direct play down the right flank, cutting in on his left foot to devastating effect.

As you can see in the table above, the left-footed star provided Bielsa's side with quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals in his debut Premier League season.

The Brazil international ranked within the top 1% of midfielders in the division for Expected Assisted Goals per 90 (0.30) and assists per 90 (0.34), which shows that he was one of the best in his position when it came to creating high-quality opportunities for his teammates.

Raphinha followed that up with 11 goals, ten 'big chances' created, and three assists in 35 Premier League outings during the 2021/22 campaign, which started with Bielsa in charge and ended with Marsch in the dugout.

The now-27-year-old ranked within the top 6% of midfielders in the top-flight for Expected Assisted Goals per 90 (0.28), and the top 7% for shot-creating actions per 90 (4.20).

These statistics show that the former Leeds star was an exceptional creative threat for the club in the Premier League in his two years in England, before his move to Barcelona in 2022.

Farke could now land his own version of the Brazilian sensation by dipping into the market to sign one of the team's reported transfer targets this month.

Leeds' interest in Championship wizard

It was recently reported by Daily Express journalist Charlie Gordon that Leeds are one of a number of teams interested in signing Burnley forward Manuel Benson.

The reporter claimed that Sunderland and Norwich City, who are also set to compete for promotion in the Championship, hold a 'concrete' interest in the winger, alongside the Whites.

Gordon stated that the 27-year-old attacker wants to be playing regular games this season and a move away from Turf Moor could allow him to do that.

Manuel Benson

Benson has been an unused substitute in Burnley's first two matches of the campaign, a 4-1 win over Luton and a 5-0 thumping of Cardiff, and appears to be out of favour under Scott Parker.

This could open up the door for Leeds, or Sunderland or Norwich, to swoop in and rescue the £25k-per-week wizard from the recently relegated side before the window slams shut.

However, it remains to be seen whether Burnley would be willing to allow him to leave on a permanent basis or if they would be prepared to loan him out.

Why Leeds should sign Manuel Benson

The Whites should swoop to sign Benson because his performances for the Clarets under Vincent Kompany in their last promotion-winning campaign suggest that he has the potential to be Farke's own Championship version of Raphinha.

Like the Brazil international, the 27-year-old wizard is a left-footed winger who is typically deployed down the right flank, and looks to cut in on his favoured foot to make things happen at the top end of the pitch.

However, it is worth noting that the attacker has endured a difficult 12 months or so. He only made eight appearances and one start in the Premier League last season and is yet to feature in a competitive match this term.

This means that it could take time for Benson to find his feet and form again at Leeds, if they sign him, and patience will be required. That patience could be greatly rewarded, though, if he can recapture the form he showed in the 2022/23 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the Angola international produced 15 direct goal contributions in 33 Championship outings, despite only starting 14 times as Burnley won the title.

He ranked within the top 6% of attacking midfielders in the division for Expected Assisted Goals per 90 (0.25) but only the top 27% for assists per 90 (0.18), which suggests that his teammates let him down with their wasteful finishing.

Benson, who was described as "electric" by EFL pundit Sam Parkin, also ranked within the top 1% of his positional peers for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.66).

ByBen Browning Aug 19, 2024

These statistics show that Leeds could sign a player with the potential to be one of the best wingers in the division at scoring and creating goals, which is why the left-footed right winger could be Farke's own version of Raphinha.

O nosso grande objetivo é manter a performance e conquistar as vitórias.

Tottenham offered Europa League’s 2021 top goalscorer on free transfer

Tottenham Hotspur have been approached by representatives over signing a free agent attacker who featured for his country at Euro 2024, and who also finished the 2020/2021 campaign as the Europa League's top goalscorer.

Spurs preparing for all-important Arsenal clash after international break

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou got his first defeat of the new Premier League season out of the way early, having fell to a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United at St. James' Park last Sunday.

Alexander Isak's winner in the 78th minute was all that split the two teams, with Dan Burn's own goal cancelling out Harvey Barnes' opener beforehand and giving the Lilywhites brief hope they could take a result away from where has been an unhappy stomping ground for Spurs in recent years.

However, Isak ensured it wasn't to be, and Postecoglou now turns his attention to one of Tottenham's biggest matches of the season. The north Londoners take on Arsenal at home in their first match after the international break, and it is a clash which they will be desperate to win.

Speaking to the press after Spurs' defeat in the North East, Postecoglou still praised Tottenham's performance against Newcastle, insisting their opening three performances of the new season have been encouraging.

"Yeah, obviously, very similar I guess to our first away game when we controlled it for the most part, nullified most of the threats that Newcastle have," said Postecoglou.

"It's obviously a difficult opponent here at home. The crowd create a pretty strong atmosphere for the home side, little things go their way but I thought for the most part we handled that really well. Then we gained the ascendancy in the game and we just needed to kill it off and we didn't and a disappointing second goal. I thought we switched off a little bit but the game should have been well over by then. So, another sore one unfortunately where we haven't got the rewards for our play, but ultimately it's three strong performances from the first three games. The results don't reflect it in that way."

It's set to be a long and interesting campaign at N17, especially considering their involvement in the new Europa League format, and tough tests like Arsenal soon await.

Tottenham reportedly wanted to strengthen in midfield before the summer transfer window closed, and to reinforce Postecoglou's squad further ahead of a congested fixture calendar.

With the UK window shut, chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Johan Lange can only dip into the free agent market if they wish to make further additions, but they'll have to do so before September 14, which is the Premier League's full squad submission deadline.

Tottenham offered chance to sign free agent Yusuf Yazici

According to HITC, the club have now been contacted over the availability of former Lille star and 45-cap Turkey international Yusuf Yazici.

The 27-year-old, who finished the 2020/2021 season as the Europa League's top goalscorer, was also called up to represent Turkey at the Euros this summer. However, that wasn't enough to convince Lille to offer him a new deal, and the attacking midfielder left the Ligue 1 side after six years in June.

Their loss could be Postecoglou's gain, though, as it is believed Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign Yazici on a free transfer, as have other English top flight clubs.

The Turk also helped to spearhead Lille to an unlikely Ligue 1 title in 2021, boasting a career total of 64 goals and 39 assists in all competitions across spells at Lille, Trabzonspor and CSKA Moscow.
