South Africa’s domestic one-day cup has been rearranged amid rising Coronavirus infections and will be now played in a bio-secure environment with a total of 15 matches, reduced from its original 24.The six franchises have been divided into two groups of three and will play each other twice, with the top two teams from each group competing in the semi-finals. All matches will be played in Potchefstroom.”It is unfortunate that we have to reduce the number of matches being played and move the entire competition to one venue, but the restrictions need to be put in place to ensure the tournament goes ahead in a safe environment in accordance with government regulations,” Graeme Smith, South Africa’s director of cricket, said.Related

South Africa's new domestic structure: 2 tiers, 15 first-class teams, 205 contracted players

The tournament will be played in two halves, starting on January 16 when Pool A between the Titans, Knights and Dolphins kicks off. Each team will play four matches in the space of seven days before Pool B between the Cobras, Lions and Warriors takes over from January 29.Their matches also take place in a week, with the semi-finals scheduled for February 11 and 12 and the final for February 14. Only the final has been allocated a reserve day. This means significantly less cricket for South Africa’s domestic franchises who were due to play seven matches each. There has been no Mzansi Super League (MSL) this season, but the franchises will play a one-round T20 tournament in April, and the first-class competition has been reduced from ten matches per team to seven, with a final.Fixtures have been culled both because of CSA’s need to cut costs and the Covid-19 pandemic which has already impacted the game in the country. The final round of first-class matches in 2020 had to be postponed after positive cases were detected in two of the three fixtures in the penultimate round. That came after England’s white-ball tour was called off early, with the ODIs yet to be played, because of concerns over the biobubble. The first round of first-class cricket saw one franchise, the Warriors, bench six players for Covid-19 related reasons. All matches will be day games starting at 10am local time and will be televised.

Imagine him & Isak: Newcastle hold talks over "world class" £51m sensation

Newcastle United will kick off their Premier League campaign a week on Saturday, as they look to work towards their goal of qualifying for European football once again. Last term, the Magpies missed out on such qualification, with Manchester United stealing the final spot thanks to their FA Cup win, despite Newcastle finishing higher in the top flight.

To kick off their season on the 17th of August, Eddie Howe’s side host newly promoted Southampton at St James’ Park, who returned to the Premier League via the playoffs. The following weekend sees a long away trip on the cards for Newcastle themselves, as they travel to the Vitality Stadium to face an exciting Bournemouth team, Howe's former club.

The Magpies' final game before the September international break will see them host Tottenham Hotspur at home. This was a fixture in which Howe’s side ended up on the right side, with the result being a destructive 4-0 victory helped by two goals from Alexander Isak.

To help their case for European qualification next term, Newcastle will no doubt need to strengthen certain areas of their squad and add firepower to help them achieve their goal. They have recently been linked with one winger who could add strength and depth in wide areas.

Newcastle target La Liga winger

The player in question here is Barcelona and Brazilian international winger Raphinha. The 27-year-old could be one of the players Barca move on this summer in order to make room for new marquee signings, and a return to the Premier League is on the cards.

According to reports from Spain, via Football365, Newcastle are the club that ‘insists the most’ on bringing the former Leeds United man to their club this summer, although the winger would prefer to stay at Barca, a move which he called his ‘childhood dream’ the day he was presented by the club.

Barcelona winger Raphinha.

However, the Magpies are seemingly one of many sides looking to add the Brazilian to their squad. Fellow Premier League side Aston Villa have been linked, as have clubs in Saudi Arabia, although the player would prefer to stay in Europe at this stage.

In terms of a price for the winger this summer, Blaugrana president Joan Laporta would ideally like to hold out for £51m, after already turning down two bids from the North East outfit, worth £34m and £39m. However, the Magpies have shown signs of a willingness to negotiate, after 'reactivating talks with Laporta’ recently.

Why Raphinha would be a good signing

The Brazilian has a more than respectable record during his time at Barca so far. In 87 games for the club, he has scored 20 goals and grabbed 25 assists, which included six goals and nine assists in just 28 La Liga appearances in the 2023/24 campaign.

Given the fact Barca are looking to add Euro 2024 winners Dani Olmo and Nico Williams to their side, and need to sell players to raise funds, Raphinha could present a key opportunity to the Magpies this summer to add attacking firepower on the right wing.

raphinha-transfer-gossip-barcelona-arsenal-arteta-edu-alexis-sanchez

As per SofaScore, his 15 goals and assists in the top flight last term would have been beaten by just two Newcastle players; Isak, who got 23 goal involvements, and Anthony Gordon, who scored and assisted 21 times. Raphinha’s international teammate, Bruno Guimaraes, also registered 15 goal involvements.

Should Howe’s side pursue a move for the in-demand talent this summer, he could help form an excellent partnership with Sweden international Isak. The 24-year-old was quite exceptional last season, and still scored 21 times in 30 Premier League appearances, despite an injury which caused him to miss a fair amount of games.

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak

This could be a deadly duo given Raphinha’s tendency to create chances from seemingly nowhere. He is a creative force on the right-hand side, which he showed during his final season at Leeds, where his 14 goal involvements helped keep them in the top flight of England.

This creativity and ability to fashion chances for himself and a teammate is reflected in his FBref stats. The 27-year-old’s 0.59 assists per 90 minutes last term ranked him in the top 1% of wingers and attacking midfielders in Europe. He actually exceeded his expected assist numbers, averaging 0.31xA in 2023/24, which ranked him in the top 7%.

Raphinha Barcelona

However, it was not just these stats which showed how impressive the 5 foot 9 winger was from a creative point of view. He also ranked highly for key passes last term, averaging 2.5 per game, which ranked him in the top 14% of wingers across Europe.

Stats from FBref

The Brazilian’s habit of creating chances from out of nowhere in all kinds of situations is certainly reflected in his stats, too. Last term, he averaged 5.39 shot-creating actions and 0.78 goal-creating actions each game, which ranked him in the top 12% and 7% respectively amongst wingers and attacking midfielders in Europe.

This is certainly something that could pair up well with Newcastle’s number 14. Isak is the sort of striker who has a natural-born killer instinct in the penalty box, able to sniff out and get on the end of chances. That is shown by his impressive goal record from last season, which didn’t just happen out of luck.

However, the Sweden striker also loves to get on the ball and run in behind, and this is another area in which the pair could form a dream partnership. As the stats show, the wideman likes to play those balls into the final third from deeper areas, and with Isak running onto those passes, it could be cause for concern for opposition Premier League defences next term.

Raphinha is a “world class” winger, according to football analyst Ben Mattinson, and he has the potential to make Isak unstoppable next season. Although he could cost a pretty penny, the Brazilian could be a perfect option for Newcastle as they look to add depth out wide and strengthen their cause for European football once again.

'Surprised' Steven Smith wins Allan Border Medal for third time

Smith was also named ODI player of the year, Pat Cummins was the Test player and Ashton Agar took the T20I honour

Steven Smith has won the Allan Border Medal for the third time, also taking the ODI awarded, while Pat Cummins was named Test player of the year and Ashton Agar earned the T20I honour at the Cricket Australia annual awards.Smith (126 votes) finished ahead of Cummins (114) and Aaron Finch (97) for the top honour, joining David Warner as a three-time winner behind the leaders Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke. In a season disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, the voting period took in Australia’s away series against India and South Africa early last year, the aborted ODIs against New Zealand at home, the white-ball tour of England, and the home season against India. The voting was conducted on a 3-2-1 basis for every match under consideration with all players voting along with media representatives and umpires.Across the formats Smith scored 1098 runs with four centuries, three of them coming in ODIs – including the back-to-back 62-ball tons against India at the SCG – along with his century in the Sydney Test. Despite missing the ODIs against England due to concussion he finished as Australia’s second-highest run-scorer in the voting period behind captain Finch.”I was a bit surprised, I didn’t feel I had the biggest Test summer, which I think holds the most votes,” he said. “I think my one-day cricket was pretty good last year, so a lot of votes there, but it’s obviously an honour to win this for the third time.Steven Smith made back-to-back 62-ball hundreds against India•Getty Images

“I thought I played some good [one-day] cricket and I thought our group were playing some good cricket as well. We beat England in England, I didn’t play any part in that series either, so that was nice. Back here against India as well I thought we played some really good cricket so we’re progressing nicely and I felt as though I had a good impact this year, which was pleasing and hopefully I can continue to do so.”With just the four Tests under consideration this year, it was little surprise that Cummins took out that title after claiming 21 wickets at 20.04 against India. He finished comfortably ahead of Josh Hazlewood and Marnus Labuschagne. In T20Is, left-arm spinner Agar finished ahead of Finch and David Warner despite missing the series against India due to a calf injury after taking 13 wickets at 12.46 and an economy rate of 6.75. That included a hat-trick against South Africa as part of a haul of 5 for 24.Josh Lalor, the Melbourne Renegades pace bowler, took out the community impact award for his work on Reflect Forward, a joint movement between racism education company One Love Australia and the Australian sports industry. The award recognises players who have made a positive contribution to the broader community through extraordinary service to the public such as the support of a charity, social cause or community event.

Leicester make enquiry to sign "decisive" winger who’s been told he can leave

Making the final additions to their squad before transfer deadline day at the end of the month, Leicester City have reportedly made their first enquiry to sign a Premier League ace for Steve Cooper.

Leicester transfer news

Despite already welcoming four reinforcements in the form of Bobby De Cordova-Reid, Michael Golding, Issahaku Fatawu and Caleb Okoli, Leicester City's summer may just be getting started. The Foxes have been linked with the likes of Steven Bergwijn and Oliver Skipp in recent days, whilst a season-long loan deal for Brighton & Hove Albion's Facundo Buonanotte has reportedly been agreed.

The Foxes are preparing to hand Cooper a squad ready to avoid Premier League relegation at the first time of asking, starting with Buonanotte and perhaps continuing with a winger from a top six club.

Leicester plotting to hijack "fantastic" gem Southampton have bid twice for

The Foxes could get one over on their newly-promoted rivals…

ByTom Cunningham Aug 8, 2024

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Leicester have made their first enquiry to sign Manor Solomon from Tottenham Hotspur, with the winger told that he is not in the plans of Ange Postecoglou after just a year in North London.

Solomon initially earned his move to Spurs thanks to an impressive spell on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk at Fulham. Since then, however, he has been disrupted by injuries and looks likely to be on the move again in search of consistent game time.

yago-santiago-manor-solomon-tottenham-opinion

There's no doubt that Solomon is a talented player, and if the Foxes can land a bargain deal then he could quickly become a piece of transfer genius at the King Power. The 25-year-old may even find his best form and fire Leicester to safety.

"Decisive" Solomon could rediscover form at Leicester

Should Leicester decide to push on with their move, then Solomon could find himself on his way back to the form that piqued Spurs' interest last summer. During his time at Fulham, the winger earned plenty of praise, including from manager Marco Silva, who said via BBC Sport: "He's been a decisive player for us.

"Like Willian, Bobby [Decordova-Reid], and the other two are waiting for the chance [Dan James, Harry Wilson]. He's really important for us. But I have to repeat the other two are doing really well."

That praise comes as little surprise too, given just how impressive he was whilst on loan at Craven Cottage. It was the type of form many thought they'd see in North London, only to watch on as Solomon missed 33 games courtesy of a meniscus injury in the early stages of the campaign.

Now back fit, Leicester could yet be the side left benefitting from a player who's more than capable of stealing the headlines for all the right reasons at the top of his games, even if Postecoglou has shown him the door.

IPL Governing Council yet to meet and finalise dates

Although multiple cities earmarked, key decision on final venues yet to be announced

Even as teams start to prepare for the tournament, the IPL has not yet announced the dates as well as the venue for the event. Concerned officials have pointed out that a final decision is set to be taken at an IPL Governing Council meeting, but no date for that has been fixed yet.Related

Mumbai set to miss out on IPL staging due to Covid-19 spike

It is understood the meeting is likely to take place around the closing days of the fourth and final Test of the England series, which started in Ahmedabad on March 4. However, none of the BCCI’s top brass as well as IPL Governing Council chairman Brijesh Patel have spoken out in public on details of the tournamentAlthough the IPL has chalked out a window for the tournament, the key hurdle for the BCCI has been finalising the venues. Having made up its mind to conduct the tournament in India after successfully organising domestic limited-overs tournaments as well as the ongoing England series, the BCCI had originally earmarked Mumbai along with Pune and Ahmedabad as the venues to conduct the 2021 edition. However, the number of rising Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra, where the state government has imposed fresh restrictions including no crowds, forced the IPL to mobilise an alternative plan. That involves conducting the tournament at multiple cities with Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad being put on the potential shortlist. One reason behind the delay is that the IPL was waiting for the Election Commission of India to announce the poll dates of several states including West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, and if it would clash with the tournament. While Tamil Nadu elections are scheduled for April 7, the polls would be conducted in multiple phases in West Bengal between late March and April 29 with results out on May 4.

A partir dessa respostas, o órgão decidirá se dará prosseguimento à ação movida porAmérica-MG, Chapecoense, Atlético-GO, Ceará, Cuiabá, Bahia, Juventude, Grêmio e Santos.
