Sunderland eyeing "incredible" new boss as process reaches "final stages"

With the summer transfer window fast approaching, a surprising new name has reportedly emerged as a candidate to take the Sunderland job and end the Black Cats' wait to replace Michael Beale once and for all.

Sunderland manager news

A number of names have been linked with the job, from Paul Heckingbottom and Liam Rosenior all the way to Pascal Jansen, but those in Wearside remain without a permanent solution. The powers that be at the Stadium of Light have certainly taken their time, likely ensuring that they get things right after their Beale experiment following Tony Mowbray's sacking went so wrong.

AZ Alkmaar boss Pascal Jansen.

Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus finally gave the fans a positive update in a recent interview, revealing that the process regarding a new manager is now in the "final stages".

The owner said via BBC Sport: "We hope to appoint the next head coach of our great club imminently, as we enter the final stages of the recruitment process. We appreciate the patience and support that we've received from you throughout the summer and our aim has always been to ensure that the right candidate is appointed.

"That outcome remains our focus. On and off the field, we have learnt from last season when we fell short of all our expectations. We are hungry and ambitious for success and determined to ensure we all enjoy a great 2024-25 season together."

Sunderland keen on "impressive" new versatile player from European giants

The Black Cats could land a bargain deal…

ByTom Cunningham Jun 6, 2024

Now, a fresh report has thrown a surprising new candidate into the mix. According to Alan Nixon, Sunderland are eyeing a move for Marti Cifuentes from Queens Park Rangers, who are likely to hand the Black Cats a significant stumbling block in the form of the manager's compensation fee. That said, the QPR boss has certainly impressed enough in the Championship to step into the Sunderland job should it come his way this summer.

Landing "incredible" Cifuentes would be difficult

Cifuentes' unknown compensation package to take him out of his QPR contract would instantly prove too complicated to take him to the top spot of Sunderland's wishlist.

The 41-year-old did an excellent job to keep QPR up in the Championship last season, guiding them to an 18th-place finish, six points above the dropzone and only behind 16th-place Sunderland on goal difference. It's no shock that James Allcott was so full of praise for the manager last season, dubbing his management "incredible" on X.

However, on his way to securing survival, the Spaniard did not defeat Sunderland, with his one game up against the Black Cats ending in a 0-0 draw.

As Sunderland's process enters its final stages, it remains to be seen whether Cifuentes will send further shockwaves across Wearside by securing the job at the Stadium of Light or a different option will emerge to finally take the hot seat in the dugout – be that Jansen, Heckingbottom or an outside shout this summer.

Deandra Dottin, Hayley Matthews feared women's cricket had ended for the year

“I started playing cricket with my cousins, the boys, just to keep active,” vice-captain Dottin said

West Indies allrounders Deandra Dottin and Hayley Matthews believe that having a “strong mindset” proved pivotal in keeping themselves motivated through the Covid-19 pandemic-induced off season. It helped them overcome fears that “we wouldn’t have any women’s cricket for the rest of the year” after the T20 World Cup in Australia ended in early March. The 2021 Women’s World Cup has been postponed by a year. That along with the cancellation of several bilateral women’s series, even after international men’s cricket resumed in July, threatened to leave the women’s calendar vacant for the rest of 2020, outside of Australia’s home series against New Zealand which begins September 26.However, the ECB successfully drew up contingency plans to make up for India and South Africa’s withdrawal for tours in July-August by inviting West Indies. Their first T20I against England in Derby on Monday is set to mark the return of top-level women’s international cricket 196 days on from the T20 World Cup final at the MCG.”The whole time in the pandemic I just thought that that was it for the year for women’s cricket,” Dottin, the West Indies vice-captain, told ESPNcricinfo. “I think this pandemic [has taught] that mentally you’ve got to be strong. You’ve got to have a strong mindset. It [is] something that you can’t easily give up.”I actually thought we wouldn’t have any women’s cricket for the rest of the year. I just kept training and doing things here and there and kept motivating myself in all ways. I started playing cricket with my cousins, the boys, just to keep active and keep that work up: of playing cricket.”Matthews echoed her team-mate’s apprehensions. She was, like Dottin, part of West Indies’ 2016 T20 World Cup-winning side. She has also been a sought-after name in domestic T20 competitions, plying her trade in the WBBL, the now-defunct KSL and the Women’s T20 Challenge.ALSO READ: West Indies women in England: ‘Women’s cricket needs this’ – Stafanie Taylor”It’s obviously something very challenging,” said Matthews, who will play for the Hobart Hurricanes in the WBBL later this year. “You have to have a strong mentality to go out there, still be training, and putting in all the hard work, not knowing if you’re going to be able to be playing again this year. I’m just really glad we are able to get back over again and that Cricket West Indies and ECB have [made that possible] for us to play.”We also see the Women’s Big Bash League; it seems it’s going to come off as well. It’s really good to see these boards are stepping up at this point and get cricket played – not only for the men’s sides but the women’s sides as well.”Hayley Matthews leaves the field after her dismissal•Getty Images

West Indies have lost (19) more times than they’ve won (17) in their 37 T20Is since their 2016 T20 World Cup victory. Like the side, Matthews, the Player of the final in that tournament, too, has struggled to replicate the abandon that became a hallmark of the side’s maiden world title triumph four years ago. In her last 15 T20I innings, she has reached 30 only thrice, her maiden T20I hundred in May last year included. In the T20 World Cup earlier this year, Matthews, who opens for the side, made only 26 runs in three innings as eventual semi-finalists England knocked West Indies out in the league stage with a game to go. Their poor performance prompted then head coach Gus Logie to describe their performance in the world tournament as “timid” and possessing a “fear factor”.Matthews, however, was hopeful the upcoming five-T20I series against England could be a starting point for West Indies to make up lost ground.”Probably of late, the pressure [on us] has eased off a bit,” Matthews said. “If you look at our performances [from the recent past], because they probably weren’t the best, the expectations from us for a lot of people aren’t as high.”I don’t necessarily say that as a bad thing, though. Coming back after the pandemic and being given the opportunity to start afresh, especially against a team like England, we’re going out there knowing we’re the underdogs. I think it kind of gives us that freedom to really be able to go out there and play our natural game and play freely and express ourselves as players and as a team as well.”With Logie’s tenure having ended with the T20 World Cup, Andre Coley, who was West Indies women’s head coach in 2012, has stepped in an interim capacity. He’s overseeing the tourists’ 18-member squad, which will be based in a biosecure environment in Derby throughout the tour and is without Anisa Mohammed, the veteran offspinner who declined the invitation to tour, with uncapped Guyanese left-arm spinner Kaysia Schultz included.Matthews, 22, underlined that the opposition’s lack of familiarity with the West Indian rookies could hold them in good stead as would the experience of the seasoned campaigners in the likes of captain Stafanie Taylor, legspinner Afy Fletcher, Dottin and herself.”We have a lot of versatility,” Matthews said. “We have a lot of different players that have stepped in, including the new players. Obviously, there wouldn’t have been much footage on them out there and stuff, so it definitely brings something new to the table when we face up against England.”We also have a lot of experience within the team: people have been playing for the last five, ten years now, so that makes our combination pretty good, and hopefully it will win us some games as well.”

McKenna could sign an exciting talent who’d thrive with Broadhead

Ipswich Town have had great luck buying a number of Welsh gems in recent times, with both Wes Burns and Nathan Broadhead standing out as glowing examples in the current squad.

Both Burns and Broadhead, who were born in Cardiff and Bangor respectively, were key parts of the Tractor Boys puzzle that won promotion up to the Premier League as plucky underdogs, with a combined 27 goal contributions tallied up between them in the second tier.

This evident success, with Burns scoring a crucial goal on the final day of last season to secure a richly deserved promotion no less, could mean Ipswich shop in the Welsh market once more soon, with this Bluebirds youngster potentially taking their fancy.

Ipswich looking at young Cardiff midfielder

Football journalist Darren Witcoop took to social media in recent days to confirm Premier League interest is there for homegrown Cardiff prodigy Rubin Colwill this summer, with Ipswich outright named as an interested party.

Labelled as being 'admirers' in the 22-year-old attacking midfielder, Witcoop did reveal that Colwill is likely to stay put regardless of this new interest, but Ipswich might well be too tempting for the 6 foot 2 talent to resist, who has even reportedly had Arsenal sniffing around for his services in the past.

In and around the first team in the Welsh capital for Erol Bulut's men over a number of seasons, Colwill will also be intrigued at the prospect of testing himself in the division above, as opposed to sticking it out with the Bluebirds routinely finishing in mid-table.

How Colwill would fit in at Ipswich

Colwill could find it hard to break into McKenna's settled first-team, however, but he could shine alongside his fellow compatriot Broadhead when given a chance to impress, and also be direct competition to Conor Chaplin just behind the lone striker spot in that number ten role.

Colwill and Broadhead have even recently been together in the same Wales camp, in rather drab circumstances in a 0-0 draw versus Gibraltar unfortunately, but the 22-year-old could opt to move to Suffolk to link up with his international teammate at club level.

Ipswich would hope this connection would take Colwill up a notch on the pitch subsequently, with the exciting attacker registering nine goals and six assists when donning a Bluebirds strip, from 107 total games to date.

Not even a main starter for Cardiff a lot of last season, Colwill still managed to amass some encouraging numbers for his boyhood club regardless – as can be seen looking at the table above – with Ipswich now looking towards the 22-year-old as a way to add strength in depth to the attacking positions, with limited numbers at McKenna's disposal in Chaplin's spot in the side.

Colwill has played all across the attack for Cardiff when needed, even playing as a centre-forward on occasion, with McKenna and Co admirers of the 22-year-old's versatility presumably as much as his raw talent.

With a close-knit team environment crucial in Ipswich upsetting the odds to pull off back-to-back promotions last season, Colwill will hope he can instantly blend in if he does join, with a familiar face in Broadhead beside him.

Rangers star agrees “astronomical” offer to leave Ibrox and join Gerrard

An "exceptional" Rangers player has agreed an "astronomical" deal to leave Ibrox this summer and join up with former manager Steven Gerrard, according to a fresh update.

Summer of change at Rangers

Euro 2024 may be taking centre stage in the footballing world, but Philippe Clement has been having an extremely productive summer transfer window to date, already bringing in a number of new faces.

The likes of Jefte, Connor Barron, Liam Kelly and Clinton Nsiala have all arrived on permanent deals, while Oscar Cortes will spend another season on loan at Ibrox, having arrived from Lens during the January window.

Oscar Cortes

It looks as though Rangers' business is far from done, with attacker Hamza Igamane seen as the next man to come in, arriving from Moroccan outfit AS FAR.

The Scottish Premiership giants have also been linked with a move for Tottenham ace Ryan Sessegnon, whose career has dipped after emerging as a hugely exciting teenager, but who could be desperate for a new challenge. He is considered someone who could provide further quality out wide alongside Cortes, too.

This has also been a summer of change when it comes to outgoings at Rangers, with a host of players moving on when their contracts expire, from Ryan Jack to Kemar Roofe. Now, another exit claim has emerged – and one that is likely to worry the supporters.

"Exceptional" Rangers hero on the move

According to a new development courtesy of Football Insider, James Tavernier has agreed to leave Rangers and join Gerrard at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, with an "astronomical" deal on the table.

The update claims that the "package in question is believed to 'massively' increase" the Gers captain's wages, and the player himself "has accepted the contract offer".

This is undoubtedly bad news for Rangers fans, considering Tavernier has arguably been the most impressive player at Ibrox over many years, providing a remarkable amount of end product from right-back.

Granted, the Englishman's numbers are aided by the fact that he takes penalties, but a tally of 125 goals and 129 assists in 460 appearances are the kind of statistics that a striker would be happy to register in his career. Clement waxed lyrical over him last season after he recorded the highest number of assists for a British defender:

"To be there on top – it’s an amazing achievement and we’re all proud of him. I said it in the dressing room also after the game. I don’t too often point out individual players, I don’t like it too much, but I had to do it this time. All the players are really proud of him, all the staff and the fans and everybody involved with Rangers. It’s really quite exceptional."

"Highly-rated" prospect has now "picked Rangers" over team worth £2.1bn

The update comes from reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano.

ByHenry Jackson Jun 28, 2024

At 32, Tavernier isn't getting any younger, so those of a more optimistic persuasion could point towards Rangers getting good money for an ageing player, but he is going to be extremely difficult to replace, both in terms of quality and leadership.

Smriti Mandhana 68, Salma Khatun three-for lead Trailblazers to 2020 Women's T20 Challenge title

Last season’s champions Supernovas lost by 16 runs

Sreshth Shah09-Nov-2020

The Supernovas led by Harmanpreet Kaur failed to defend their Women’s T20 Challenge title as they lost a low-scoring final of the 2020 edition to the Smriti Mandhana-led Trailblazers in Sharjah.Chasing 119, the Supernovas struggled in their chase, losing early wickets to spin and failed to recover, eventually losing by 16 runs. Kaur’s 36-ball 30 had kept the Supernovas in with a chance, but her dismissal in the 19th over allowed the Trailblazers to breathe easy and eventually seal a comfortable win.Earlier in the day, Radha Yadav’s five-wicket haul had restricted the Trailblazers to 118 for 7, a total that seemed below par at the halfway mark despite a fluent 68 from Mandhana. But as the wicket got difficult in the second innings, it was a total that in hindsight was more than competitive as the Trailblazers spinners applied the choke successfully.Mandhana shows her classThe Trailblazers captain was due a big score after making just 39 runs in the two league-stage games, but come the final, she struck the game’s only half-century, and that too at a strike-rate of 138.77. Her 49-ball 68 included five fours and three sixes. Her innings was all the more important because nobody in her team had a strike-rate of 90, and the other batters contributed just 45 runs in 72 balls. She dominated the powerplay while her opening partner Deandra Dottin (32-ball 20) struggled on the sluggish surface, and together they made 45 in six overs for the loss of no wickets.Dottin was the first Trailblazers wicket to fall in the 12th over, and once that happened, Mandhana began to take more chances. She reached her fifty three balls after Dottin’s dismissal, but was out in the 15th over, stumped off Shashikala Siriwardene trying to attempt yet another big shot. By then, though, the Trailblazers had already breached 100.Radha’s five-star showThe Trailblazers had eight wickets in hand till the end of the 17th over but went on to lose six wickets over the next 18 deliveries. That was thanks to Radha’s left-arm spin, who took two wickets in the 18th and three in the 20th to ensure the Supernovas did not have to chase a total in excess of 120.Her 5 for 16 was the best figures in the history of the competition and she earned her wickets by slowing her pace, forcing batters to try and manufacture the power, which they mostly failed, holing out to cover or in the long-on region. When she finished her spell at the culmination of the first innings, it seemed the momentum was with the Supernovas as they needed 119 to defend their Women’s T20 Challenge title.Khatun, Deepti seal the winChamari Athapaththu and Jemimah Rodrigues opened the batting for the Supernovas, and Jhulan Goswami welcomed them with some deliveries that were swinging away from the left-hand batter and into the right-hand batter. Athapaththu failed to connect with her drives with Rodrigues was finding it hard to pierce the gaps, and the partnership was broken in the second over when Sophie Ecclestone trapped the Sri Lankan lbw after a successful review.Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Deepti Sharma then applied the choke with some stump-to-stump bowling, with the latter taking the wickets of Rodrigues and Taniya Bhatia, but while Kaur was in the middle, the chase was always on despite the rising asking rate.Kaur looked to slog leg-side but a hamstring injury she suffered in the first innings was hindering his movement. That meant she struggled with the doubles.Salma Khatun, the Bangladesh international, then dismissed Siriwardene in the 15th over, and in her final over – the game’s 19th – dismissed Kaur and Pooja Vastrakar in the same over to all but end Supernovas’ hope of a win. Needing 24 off the final over, the Supernovas could make only seven as the Trailblazers sealed their win. While Mandhana was the Player of the Match, Radha was the Player of the Tournament for her eight wickets in three matches.

Chelsea struck gold on "crazy talent" who’s worth even more than Estevao

Over the past few years, Chelsea’s transfer strategy hasn’t followed a routine pattern in terms of cost, but there has been a common theme in terms of profiles.

It seems that Todd Boehly is looking to create a squad full of young talent that can help the club sustain success for multiple years, such as Moises Caicedo and Malo Gusto.

However, the most exciting youngster could now be Estevao Willian, who recently became a Blue until 2033.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at a Chelsea star who’s now become worth even more than the talented wonderkid, and still has plenty of potential himself.

What Chelsea paid for Noni Madueke

In January 2023, Chelsea brought the highly-rated Noni Madueke to the club in a bid to bolster the attacking department and find a permanent solution to the right-wing spot.

Prior to his move to Stamford Bridge, the attacker was playing his football in the Netherlands for PSV, where he was known as a “crazy talent” by some, including football scout Jacek Kulig.

Noni Madueke

The then-20-year-old joined Chelsea for a fee of around £31m, as he signed a seven-year contract with the option to extend for a further year.

Without the luxury of a pre-season, Madueke jumped straight into the action of the Premier League, starting seven times and scoring once, but it was last season when he began to show his true ability.

Madueke’s transfer market value in 2024

The 2023/24 campaign for Chelsea was a rather unique period, with new boss Mauricio Pochettino attempting to find his best squad.

This meant that plenty of players were rotated, and game time was somewhat infrequent, especially for Madueke, who was competing against the excellent Cole Palmer for the majority of the season.

Therefore, the Englishman only made 13 Premier League starts last campaign despite making 23 appearances, and most of them came towards the end of the Argentine’s time at the club.

Nonetheless, he truly cemented himself into the side once Palmer had been moved more centrally, scoring five goals and registering two assists, which is a respectable return considering he averaged 47 minutes per game.

Via CIES' Football Observatory

The number 11 is currently estimated to be worth around £42m by CIES’ Football Observatory, which is clearly an increase from the figure he was bought for.

Impressively, as of right now, Madueke is still much more valuable than Estevao, who joined Chelsea for an initial fee of £29m, as per Fabrizio Romano. Why is that particularly interesting? Well, they could well be fighting for the same place on the wings in the years to come.

When compared to the entire Chelsea squad, the left-footed ace is only behind Palmer, Mykhaylo Mudryk, and Nicolas Jackson for transfer value when it comes to attackers, while also being the joint-third-most valuable Englishman at Chelsea.

Usually, signing a player of the Brazilian’s quality would instantly make Madueke feel like his spot was under threat; however, the winger won’t arrive at the club until next summer.

This means that the number 11 has a full season to truly showcase what he’s all about in the Premier League and, more importantly, Enzo Maresca, and that added determination could just see him explode next year.

Overall, considering his market value has increased and he has begun to show why Kulig described him as having “enormous potential," Chelsea looks to have hit the jackpot by signing Madueke last year.
