Arsenal star has played himself out of the XI after 4/10 Bayern display

As absurd as it might sound, given the last decade of football, Arsenal will still feel disappointed following their 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

While the Bavarians are European royalty and can, therefore, never be written off, the contrasting form of the two sides heading into the clash made the home side favourites in the eyes of many.

However, Harry Kane did what he always does and scored at the Emirates, while Thomas Tuchel's wingers caused chaos out wide for the Gunners' defenders.

Leroy Sané was particularly terrifying out on the left and put in a performance in stark contrast to Mikel Arteta's own leftwing star – who has now played himself out of the starting lineup.

Gabriel Martinelli's performance against Bayern Munich

The player in question is Brazilian wideman Gabriel Martinelli, who returned to the starting XI against Bayern for the first time since injuring his foot against Sheffield United in the Premier League on March 4th.

It was a change to the team that many fans would have been happy to see and even calling for, as on his day, the 22-year-old can be near enough unplayable. For example, just last season, the "sensational talent", as described by U23 scout Antonio Mango, ended the campaign with 15 goals and six assists in 46 games.

However, last night, he was utterly ineffective. Whether it was due to a lack of game time in recent weeks, a lack of match sharpness, the excellent defending from Bayern or just the occasion itself, for whatever reason, the usually explosive winger was practically nowhere to be seen.

This is an opinion shared by GOAL's Matt O'Connor-Simpson, who gave the former Ituano-gem a 4/10 on the night and wrote that he 'didn't really get into the game, with Kimmich largely getting the better of him.'

While that might sound harsh, it's an observation backed up by the star's statistics. In his 66 minutes of action, he registered an expected goals figure of just 0.10, took no shots on target, took one shot off target, failed in three of his four dribbles, took just 27 touches and lost the ball eight times.

Overall, it wasn't a good performance, and with two players right behind him, it looks as if Martinelli has played himself out of the starting lineup, at least for now.

The options to replace Martinelli

Now, there are only two genuine options for this, and both came on in the second half last night: Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus.

While Martinelli struggled to make even the smallest impact on the game last night, both of Arteta's attacking substitutions made a monumental difference. Trossard scored the Gunners' equaliser after some genuinely incredible footwork from Jesus cleared the way for him.

That said, which one should start in the second leg?

Well, in terms of pure output this season, it's close, but with 13 goals and two assists to his name in 38 appearances, the Belgian comes out just ahead, although with eight goals and six assists in nine fewer appearances, the former Manchester City ace is arguably more dangerous.

Moreover, while the ex-Brighton & Hove Albion star has an impressive haul of four goals and one assist in eight Champions League appearances this season, his Brazilian competitor has an even more impressive record of four goals and three assists in seven appearances.

Lastly, when it comes to experience in Europe's premier competition, there is no competition between them. The 27-year-old marksman has years of experience to call upon in the toughest of moments, which is something Trossard just doesn't have.

Ultimately, while Martinelli is an incredibly talented winger and looks destined for a tremendous career in north London, his shocking performance last night must see him dropped from the lineup ahead of the second leg and replaced with the vastly experienced Jesus.

The BCB has accepted Charl Langeveldt’s resignation as the Bangladesh bowling coach after he emailed the board explaining that he has an offer from Cricket South Africa. Akram Khan, the BCB’s cricket operations committee chairman, confirmed Langeveldt’s departure less than five months into his two-year contract.”Langeveldt said he has offer to work in South Africa’s senior side, which is why he requested the BCB to let him go,” Akram told the Bengali daily on Tuesday. “We have decided to release him.”Langeveldt’s link with a role in the South Africa team is part of an overhaul in their coaching setup, which saw Mark Boucher named head coach recently.Langeveldt, who was appointed by the BCB on July 27, came in as part of a similar overhaul in the Bangladesh coaching staff. He replaced Courtney Walsh, while Russell Domingo took over as head coach in place of Steve Rhodes. Daniel Vettori later joined as spin-bowling consultant, replacing Sunil Joshi. With Bangladesh touring Pakistan next month, the BCB has exactly a month to replace Langeveldt although Champaka Ramanayake, the BCB academy’s bowling coach, could take over on a temporary basis as he has done in the past.

Alleged bookie Sanjeev Chawla extradited from United Kingdom

He is one of the six booked by the Delhi Police in the Hansie Cronje match-fixing scandal

Nagraj Gollapudi13-Feb-2020

Alleged bookie Sanjeev Chawla at Patiala House Court•PTI

Sanjeev Chawla, an alleged bookie, was extradited from the UK on Thursday. He is one of the primary accused in the 2000 match-fixing scandal that involved former South African captain Hansie Cronje.Chawla’s extradition was sought by the Delhi police, who had filed a chargesheet in 2013, naming him along with five others including the late Cronje, for conspiracy to cheat, a criminal offence under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code.In a media release issued on Thursday, Dr G. Ram Gopal Naik, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch), said Chawla will be in the police “remand/custody” for 12 days. Based on the progress of the investigations, the cops could ask for a further remand, but following that Chawla would be shifted to the Tihar Jail before the judicial proceedings begin.Apart from Chawla and Cronje, the other accused were: Rajesh Kalra, Krishan Kumar, Sunil Dara – all three based in India – and Manmohan Khattar, who is believed to be living overseas. In the chargesheet, the Delhi police said Chawla and the other five accused were charged with IPC 420 (cheating) and 120B (criminal conspiracy). The chargesheet cited 65 witnesses and ran over 2500 pages, but the operative portion was only 80 pages. The Delhi police had sought Chawla’s extradition because of his alleged involvement in the match-fixing controversy which eventually implicated Cronje, who confessed during the King Commission inquiry to accepting money from bookies to fix matches during South Africa’s ODI series in India in 2000.Chawla’s extradition was approved by the UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid in February last year under the India-UK Extradition Treaty 1992. On June 14, 2016, Chawla was arrested in the UK after the Indian government sought his extradition in February that year but was let out on bail. In January 2019, the Westminster Magistrates’ Court, which had blocked the extradition in 2017 on human interest grounds, eventually asked Javid’s office to take the final decision. In January this year, Chawla contested the extradition on humanitarian grounds in the Royal Courts of Justice, London, but lost the appeal. In a last-ditch attempt, Chawla then approached the European Court of Human Rights, which is based in Strasbourg (France), to block the extradition. In his appeal, Chawla cited his rights under the European Convention on Human Rights, to which the UK is a signatory. On February 6, they rejected his plea.On Thursday, Chawla landed in Delhi accompanied by the team of the Delhi police’s crime branch. He will be housed in Delhi’s Tihar jail ahead of his trial. Chawla’s acquisition is a major shot in the arm for the cops and has re-opened the investigation that shook cricket at the turn of the millennium. Cronje’s links to the bookies were unearthed by an investigating officer Ishwar Singh, who was probing an unrelated extortion case in early 2000.Upon further investigations, the Delhi Police found that Cronje had persuaded some of his team-mates to agree to underperform in an ODI in 2000 during the India tour. Subsequently, batsman Herschelle Gibbs and bowler Henry Williams were banned for six months each and fined by South African authorities for their part in the scandal.

Four clubs plotting to sign "important" £26,000-a-week Rangers ace for free

Four different English clubs are plotting to complete the signing of an "important" £26,000-a-week Rangers player, according to a new update regarding his future.

Rangers transfer news

This summer could prove to be a busy one at Ibrox, with new signings arriving at the club but some current players also moving on well their contracts run out.

A host of Philippe Clement's squad members are out of contract at the end of the season, with Borna Barisic, John Lundstram and Kemar Roofe among those who are in that situation. Meanwhile, Abdallah Sima and Fabio Silva are on loan until the campaign comes to an end, and it remains to be seen if their moves from Brighton and Wolves respectively will become permanent.

Abdallah Sima

In terms of possible signings, Eduard Spertsyan is reportedly wanted by Rangers, with the Krasnodar attacking midfielder seen as an "interesting" option who has outscored Silva this season, netting nine times in the league.

Fluminense's Jhon Arias is another player who has been linked with a summer move to the Gers, and La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are also thought to be in the mix. Standard Liege goalkeeper Arnaud Bodart could also come in, with the Scottish Premiership very interested in acquiring his signature.

"Excellent" Rangers ace a wanted man

According to Football Insider, Rangers forward Roofe is wanted by four different clubs in the summer transfer window, with his future remaining up in the air.

The teams in question are English quartet Fulham, Sheffield United, Southampton and Queens Park Rangers, with "no new deal agreed to keep him at Ibrox" yet. He would rather extend his stay at Ibrox and has made that clear, but the clubs mentioned are "plotting" to snap him up, seeing him as a strong option on a free transfer.

Glasgow Rangers striker Kemar Roofe.

This is a tricky decision for Rangers to make, considering what a good servant Roofe has been down the years, scoring 38 goals in 98 appearances overall, as well as registering seven assists for good measure. The £26,000-a-week ace has also been lauded as "very important" by former manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the past.

Now 31 years of age, however, there would be a risk element when it comes to handing Roofe a new deal with the Gers, considering he is already on good money but may now have drifted past his very best as a player. Only five starts have come his way in the league this season, as well as six appearances from the substitutes, with just one goal scored in the competition.

Injuries have certainly played a part in that low tally, but his fitness issues are another reason why selling him for free this summer feels like the more sensible option.

Rangers keen on signing "interesting" Celtic target who's outscored Silva

This would be a huge upgrade.

ByTom Cunningham Apr 13, 2024

Getting the Englishman off the club's wage bill could help free up funds for new signings in the summer window, allowing Clement to bring in a younger option who can play a bigger role well into the future.

Andre Russell smashes 40* off 14 as West Indies sweep Sri Lanka 2-0

King and Russell tore into the SL attack to chase down a modest 155 with three overs to spare

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando06-Mar-2020

It rained sixes with Andre Russell at his destructive best•Associated Press

Sri Lanka limped their way to 155 for 6 on a good track in Pallekele, as West Indies put in a strong collective bowling effort. The target was no match for West Indies’ batting might, as the visitors flew at over 10 an over in the Powerplay, before the middle order kept the score ticking, and Andre Russell then finished the game in a hail of sixes. They needed only 17 overs to complete the chase and complete a 2-0 whitewash of the T20I series.Sri Lanka stutter through the early/middle oversNone of Sri Lanka’s first six partnerships were worth more than 33. That would almost be passable, if they had managed to score quickly. But they didn’t. Against West Indies’ varied and canny attack, most in the top order could not consistently find timing, with no one in the top five breaching 25.Just as a partnership seemed to be developing, and it would be time for the pair to raise the tempo, the attempted big shot would go awry. Avishka Fernando was bowled by Oshane Thomas, swinging across the line. Kusal Perera holed out to point trying to cut Fabian Allen. Shehan Jayasuriya was caught at deep midwicket, and Kusal Mendis sent a legside flick straight down the throat of deep square leg.Despite a good final partnership between Thisara Perera and Dasun Shanaka, Sri Lanka had ceded too much ground earlier in their innings. Their total of 155 always seemed at least 15 short. Against this West Indies batting line up, it was probably 30 short.King of the PowerplayWest Indies hit 61 in the Powerplay, getting themselves well ahead of the rate. Of those runs, Brandon King had made 43. He’d also hit every single one of the boundaries. He started with a flick of the wrists to send a wayward Lasith Malinga ball skimming away behind deep square leg for four, before busting out the big power shots. He blasted Angelo Mathews’ first ball through the covers, then clipped him beautifully behind square for a four later in that over.Malinga bowled the final over of the Powerplay, and it was here that King really put West Indies well ahead of the required rate. He edged the third ball past the keeper for four, but later, launched Malinga over long on for six, before clobbering him over cow corner for another one. He faced each of the balls in that over and reaped 19 runs. He’d be out in the eighth over for 43 off 21, but by then, West Indies were flying.Cyclone RussellAt the other end of West Indies’ chase, an even more devastating innings. From who else, but Andre Russell? He came to the crease in the 13th over, when West Indies needed only 53 off 44 balls, but man, did he make sure this good chance of victory was emphatically grasped. He hit six sixes in his 40 off 14 balls – that’s a strike rate of 286.71, by the way, if you’re struggling with the maths. No fours, because why bother? The third six, off Thisara Perera, flew high over cow corner, and out of the Milky Way, probably.Malinga’s bowling plans get messed upFirst of all, Malinga himself was having an off night, conceding 12 runs off his first over, and eventually finishing at none for 46 off 3 – an economy rate of 15.33, thanks to Messrs King and Russell. Then, his prize spin-bowling asset, Wanindu Hasaranga, pulled up lame chasing a ball at deep square leg in the second over and had to be rushed off to hospital for scans. This meant Sri Lanka’s best wicket-taking weapon of the tour didn’t get to bowl a single delivery, and Malinga had to make up those overs with others, with predictable results.

Moshiri produced rare Everton blinder by selling star for 489% profit

Everton have made some questionable decisions in the transfer market over the last few years under the Farhad Moshiri regime, undoubtedly a huge factor in the club's current financial situation.

The Toffees have been hit with multiple points deductions this campaign, with Sean Dyche's side accumulating a total of eight points for multiple breaches of PSR – but still managing to maintain their ever-present Premier League status for another season.

Everton's home stadium, Goodison Park.

Dyche has had to operate on a shoestring budget, after the signings of players such as Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Yerry Mina which cost the club over £50m, with the duo both departing Goodison Park on free transfers upon the end of their contracts.

However, despite their recent failings, the club have also conducted some sensible business in the window, including selling one player for a huge profit just a couple of years after arriving at Goodison Park.

Demarai Gray's stats at Everton

During the summer of 2021/22, the Toffees made smart long-term investments to try and bolster their squad for the present, but also keep one eye on the future.

demarai-gray-everton-premier-league

Winger Demarai Gray was one of the players that arrived at Goodison, joining the club for just £1.7m from German side Bayer Leverkusen – a deal that would prove to be an absolute bargain.

The winger added needed pace and goals into the Toffees' forward line, managing to score six times and register five assists in his first full season on Merseyside – including a magnificent strike in the 2-1 win against Arsenal at Goodison.

He would fail to replicate his excellent form from his debut season at the club during 2022/23, however, scoring just four times, one of which was an absolute stunner in the draw against eventual champions Manchester City at the Etihad.

However, Gray played a huge part in the club's survival, as Dyche's side clinched a 1-0 win against Bournemouth on the final day to maintain their Premier League status.

That would be the 27-year-old's last game in the Everton blue, departing the club for a new adventure at the end of last season, in a deal that made the Toffees a solid profit after just two seasons.

How much Everton made on the Demarai Gray deal

The "unbelievable" Jamaican, as described by Rio Ferdinand, left Goodison to move to Al Ettifaq for a deal in the region of £10m – joining up with former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard.

Gray's transfer saw the club yield a 489% profit on the fee they paid for him just two seasons prior – a brilliant deal considering the club's PSR struggles.

The winger has only managed eight goal contributions in the Saudi Pro League this campaign, a tally that is one less than current Everton wideman Dwight McNeil, who has achieved nine despite the club's relegation-threatened season.

Everton forwardDemarai Gray.

All things considered, the club – under Moshiri's watch – conducted excellent business in selling Gray. Although he made a huge impact during his time at the club, the fee allowed for reduced losses for the previous financial year, subsequently cutting the Toffees' losses.

Given McNeil's higher tally of contributions in front of goal, it also goes to show that players are replaceable, with Dyche working his magic with the young winger once more allowing him to fill the Jamaican's boots at Goodison.

Everton were rinsed by Koeman signing who cost over £1m per game

He proved to be a complete waste of money despite his big-money move.
