Usamos o time completo em três, quatro jogos…

Ryan Higgins five-for gives Gloucestershire upper hand against Derbyshire

Derbyshire recovered from 95 for 7 but could still only muster 200 as Ryan Higgins and Josh Shaw shared eight wickets

A five wicket haul from Ryan Higgins gave promotion contenders Gloucestershire the edge on the opening day of the match against Derbyshire at Derby. Higgins bowled superbly to take 5 for 54 from 22 overs as Derbyshire were bowled out for 200 with Josh Shaw finishing with 3 for 50.Alex Hughes top scored with 39 on his return to the Championship side but Gloucestershire’s batsmen also struggled in bowler-friendly conditions as they closed on 46 for 2.Gloucestershire’s decision to make first use of a grassy pitch brought immediate rewards as Derbyshire lost both openers with only 5 on the board. David Payne found bounce and movement to have Billy Godleman caught behind without scoring before Higgins began his impressive pre-lunch shift by finding Luis Reece’s outside edge.Higgins was rewarded for maintaining a full length and repeatedly making the batsmen play to leave the field with outstanding figures of 3 for 13 from nine overs, six of them maidens. Wayne Madsen, who came into the match averaging nearly 50 against Gloucestershire, was bowled by one that swung in late to knock out middle stump and a similar ball trapped Tom Lace in front two overs before the interval. In between, Leus du Plooy had edged a loose drive at Shaw to second slip and Gloucestershire’s domination continued after lunch as Harvey Hosein edged Higgins to first slip. When Matt Critchley was struck in front by Ben Allison making his first-class debut on loan from Essex, Derbyshire were 95 for 7 but Hughes and the lower order carried the home side to an unlikely batting point.Hughes faced 138 balls and batted for nearly three hours until he was beaten by another full length ball from Higgins that moved late to end a stand of 55 in 16 overs with Fynn Hudson-Prentice.Shaw tempted Hudson-Prentice into fishing at a wide one but some muscular blows from Logan van Beek, including a straight six off Payne, frustrated Gloucestershire until a smart slip catch removed Ravi Rampaul. The visitors had 19 overs to negotiate and after beating the bat several times, Reece had James Bracey caught behind for 5 in the 12th. Rampaul then struck in the next over when Gareth Roderick could only edge a ball that left him late low to third slip where Critchley took a smart catch.

Everton chiefs expect star to demand exit to highest bidder if relegated

After receiving positive news regarding their appeal against their first Financial Fair Play charge, which initially saw them deducted 10 points, Everton have a much stronger chance to secure their Premier League status. Having been handed four points back from their initial deduction, the Toffees now sit five points clear of Luton Town in the relegation zone.

Sean Dyche's side aren't safe yet however, with a second charge pending, and recent reports have only added to the consequences that those at Goodison Park could face if they fail to avoid the drop this season.

Everton transfer news

To their credit, Everton's results and performances on the pitch have often mirrored those of a side sitting comfortably in mid-table. Both Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite have particularly starred for Dyche's side, attracting plenty of interest as a result, to hand the Toffees a potential dilemma.

Onana was reportedly the subject of interest from Arsenal during the January transfer window and has since been linked with Chelsea, as well as the Gunners once more. The central midfielder won't come cheap, however, with Everton reportedly demanding a price of £51m for the Belgian this summer.

Meanwhile, Branthwaite has apparently attracted even higher interest. Reports have even suggested that Real Madrid are interested in signing the defender, as well as Tottenham Hotspur, in a deal that could be worth up £75m this summer.

Now, to make matters worse, relegation could also create question marks over the future of Jordan Pickford. According to the Daily Mail, Toffees chiefs believe Pickford will "demand" a transfer if they go down. They did not put a relegation wage cut clause into his contract like with many others, because they fully expect he'd want to leave anyway.

The club have taken measures however to ensure they get good money for his services – the goalkeeper does not have a release clause in his deal, meaning it would simply be a case of tempting clubs into a bidding war.

In one swoop, the Toffees could lose their Premier League status, Onana, Branthwaite and Pickford in the coming months in what would be a disastrous start to the summer.

Everton must keep "superb" Pickford

There are several reasons why Everton need to avoid Premier League relegation and keeping hold of star players is among those reasons. And that includes Pickford. The England international has been one of few consistent performers in Merseyside over the last few years, quickly becoming an important part of any successful relegation battle at Goodison Park.

Everton coach Alan Kelly even held praise for the shot-stopper after England's penalty shootout defeat in the Euro 2020 final against Italy, saying via Everton's official website.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore blitzes 165* on shortened day as Yorkshire take charge

Opener takes advantage against depleted Warwickshire attack as debutant Tom Loten also shines

Tom Kohler-Cadmore thrashed a 113-ball hundred to celebrate his 100th first-class innings as Yorkshire plundered a depleted Warwickshire attack on a truncated opening day of their Specsavers County Championship match at Edgbaston. In two sessions before rain wiped out play after tea, Kohler-Cadmore struck an unbeaten 165 from 175 balls, with 26 fours and one six, out of his side’s excellent foundation of 261 for 2. A few days after England’s director of men’s cricket, Ashley Giles, confirmed he was once again available for consideration, Kohler-Cadmore reached the close 10 runs shy of his first-class career best.He added 184 for the second wicket with debutant Tom Loten, a 20-year-old from York, who showed an excellent temperament in making 58 for a maiden half-century in his first first-class innings. Together the pair ensured that Yorkshire emphatically bounced back from their record defeat, by 433 runs to Kent at Headingley last week.On a good batting pitch, offering nothing to the seamers and only the slowest of turn to the spinners, it was a good toss for the White Rose to win and Kohler-Cadmore was soon taking advantage, clubbing the ball through the off-side as he charged to 50 from 49 balls. He and Adam Lyth added 77 in 17.4 overs for the first wicket before Lyth edged Craig Miles, recalled to the team in place of the injured George Garrett, to second slip where Sam Hain took a sharp catch.Loten survived some uncertain early moments and a couple of loud appeals against spinner Jeetan Patel but settled impressively to play with patience and composure. He reached his half-century from 142 balls, content to take the minor role while the more assertive Kohler-Cadmore moved to his ninth first-class century with 13 fours and a six.Loten finally fell to the last ball before tea when he edged offspinner Alex Thomson low to Will Rhodes at slip. Yorkshire were denied an opportunity to build further in the final session when rain set in during the tea interval.

Man Utd missed out on the "best player in the world" as well as Haaland

Manchester United have been known to miss out on plenty of top talents over the years, instead opting for plenty of flops.

This was even more apparent during the reign of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was always so close to achieving success as manager of the Red Devils.

In truth, the current United squad that Erik ten Hag is working with this season is still very much a Solskjaer team.

However, had things panned out differently, the Dutch boss could have been coaching Erling Haaland rather than figuring out how to stop him, as well as one individual who has gone on to become absolutely elite.

When Man Utd tried to sign Haaland and one other star

This week, the Norwegian boss appeared as a guest on The Overlap podcast with Gary Neville and Co, where he gave an 80-minute interview talking about his time as Man United manager.

During the video, Solskjaer gave some interesting insight on the club, from Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to players they missed out on, with Haaland and one other gem being the standouts.

He said the following regarding the Manchester City striker: “The summer before I got here (Man United), I rang the club and said: 'You've got to sign this boy. He’ll be top class."

United clearly didn’t follow the advice of the former player, with Solskjaer confirming that it was the club’s decision to not go for arguably the best centre-forward in the world, not his.

The other player who United very nearly signed was none other than Jude Bellingham, who was even at Old Trafford before turning down a move. Solskjaer went on to say:

“Jude wanted a certain amount of minutes in the first team. He was 17 at the time… and he was the most mature 17-year-old I’ve ever met, he had it all planned out.”

Instead, the Birmingham City icon opted for a move to the Bundesliga, where he developed into the player he is today at Borussia Dortmund, alongside Haaland.

What makes Jude Bellingham so special

The England international didn’t only develop in Germany; he became one of the most promising talents in world football.

During his spell at BVB, Bellingham played 132 matches in all competitions, registering 24 goals and 25 assists from central midfield, but this season he’s gone to an entirely new level.

In the summer, the 20-year-old moved to Real Madrid in a deal worth £88m and it’s fair to say that he’s excelled even further, with Joleon Lescott calling Bellingham “the best player in the world.”

The number five has completely dominated La Liga and the Champions League at Los Blancos, scoring 20 goals and providing seven assists in just 28 matches, which is absolutely unbelievable for a midfielder by trade.

As you can see by his FBref La Liga scouting report comparing him to his positional peers, Bellingham is among the most elite, and he simply does everything on the field.

The statistics really do speak for themselves, and as he is so well-rounded, it really highlights how influential he is at Madrid. However, it’s his maturity, winning mentality, and professionalism that separates him from the rest, which Solskjaer alluded to during his interview.

To now know how close United were to signing both Haaland and Bellingham will haunt the Red Devils faithful for years to come, especially as they are two of the best players in the world at this moment.

The Southampton flop who has now become a superb Premier League star

Southampton, after finishing bottom of the Premier League last season in a disastrous campaign overall, have a real chance of an immediate return back to the top flight this season.

Although their chances at finishing in the top two look rather far-fetched now, with Leeds United pulling away from the Saints amidst a poor run of form for Southampton, Russell Martin won't be fazed by his side potentially entering into the lottery of the playoffs with the immense quality at his disposal on the South Coast.

The likes of Adam Armstrong, Flynn Downes and many others for Martin's men have stood out in the drop-down to the second tier, with the ex-Newcastle United striker in particular taking the Championship by storm with 18 goals fired in from 36 appearances.

Despite so many of the current Saints camp excelling and getting supporters at St. Mary's out of their seats with enthralling displays, there is no doubt still some lingering regret from a Southampton perspective about how things ended up with this dud when he was sold on nearly three years ago in 2021.

Mario Lemina's time at Southampton

Southampton would break the bank to land Mario Lemina in 2017, going above and beyond to sign the ex-Juventus central midfielder by forking out a club-record fee that rose to £18m.

Former Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina.

The deal at the time was viewed as a coup from the Saints, with then Southampton vice-chairman Les Reed labelling their new Gabonese recruit as "outstanding."

However, much like other bodies through the door in that summer transfer window and later in January – with Wesley Hoedt and Guido Carillo never really settling at St. Mary's in other major flops – Lemina would struggle to ever really show why the Saints splashed significant amounts of money to land him.

Lineup for Lemina's debut

Southampton 3-2 West Ham (Aug 2017)

1. GK – Fraser Forster

2. RB – Cedric Soares

3. CB – Maya Yoshida

4. CB – Jack Stephens

5. LB – Ryan Bertrand

6. CM – Mario Lemina

7. CM – Oriol Romeu

8. RW – Dusan Tadic

9. CAM – Steven Davis

10. LW – Nathan Redmond

11. ST – Manolo Gabbiadini

Sourced by Transfermarkt

Even on his Premier League debut, Lemina would last just 65 minutes before James Ward-Prowse would come on in his place – the ex-Southampton midfield icon coincidentally joining the Hammers last year after stealing Lemina's thunder against them.

The former Juventus man would go on to make 52 appearances for Southampton over two forgettable seasons, before leaving the South Coast outfit behind for the luxuries of France in OGC Nice.

Southampton would make a disastrous loss on their one-time record-breaking signing, but would have probably been thankful just to have him off their books after two loan spells out at Galatasaray and Fulham illustrated Lemina's lack of desire to stay put with the Saints and fight it out for his spot.

James-ward-prowse-mario-lemina-southampton

According to Football Transfers, the Ligue 1 side would manage to swoop in and sign the Saints dud for a reduced fee of €5.5m (£4.7m) which was a far cry away from the extortionate £18m once needed to acquire the Gabonese midfielder from a Southampton point of view.

To the 6-foot holding midfielder's credit, he has managed to turn around his stuttering career since which started when relocating to France after waving goodbye to St. Mary's.

Mario Lemina's redemption after Southampton

Lemina would slot straight into the Nice set-up seamlessly after a stop-start time in England, making 32 appearances in his first season in Ligue 1 and bagging two goals along the way.

One of those efforts would be a sweetly struck first-time shot finding the back of the net against RC Lens to help his new employers win 2-1, Lemina loving his football again in an eclectic Nice set-up that saw him line up alongside faces such as Kasper Dolberg and Justin Kluivert to name but a few.

That would catch the eye of Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, who would be successful in their approach for the ex-Saints flop in January last year with a bid of €11m (£9.4m) enough to tempt Nice into parting ways with their redeemed star-man.

Lemina would join the Wolves ranks mid-way through the 2022/23 campaign, with his importance to the cause at Molineux only elevated at the end of this season when the likes of Ruben Neves in holding midfield exited amidst widespread change at the club.

Now, Lemina is a true midfield machine in the West Midlands under Gary O'Neil with any demons from his Southampton move not working out very much now just an after-thought.

Mario Lemina's time at Wolves

Described as being an "unbelievable" footballer by football scout Umir early into his Wolves career, Lemina is arguably one of the first names on O'Neil's teamsheet now when he ponders his Old Gold starting lineups.

Mario-Lemina-Wolverhampton-Wanderers

The former Saints midfielder has made an appearance in 25 of Wolves' 28 games this campaign in the league, with Lemina's team punching above their weight in the Premier League sitting pretty in ninth spot.

The imposing presence of Lemina in the middle of the park has enabled Wolves to dream big, the Old Gold number five maturing into a resilient defensive option for his West Midlands employers on top of being a reliable source of goals.

This campaign alone, in all competitions, Lemina has more than doubled his paltry Southampton goal tally of two with five next to his name.

The midfielder ended up netting in back-to-back games last December as Wolves picked up two wins in a row against Chelsea and Brentford, heading home against the Blues to make it 1-0 on Christmas Eve during that mini purple patch.

Lemina will just be grateful that he has managed to find his stride in English football with Wolves, after a rocky time of it on the South Coast had left many doubting his star quality.

The vital cog in the Wolves machine could well be reminded of his past Southampton connections head on next season though, if Martin's men end up jumping back up into the promised land of the Premier League at the first try.
