ExWHUemployee says West Ham want 23 y/o who Scott Parker called an "animal"

West Ham United are apparently keen on signing a club's star defender who's been pivotal to their title push, according to club insider ExWHUemployee.

Moyes eyeing new full-back for West Ham

As per reports in the last week, there is now a strong belief that Irons manager David Moyes wishes to sign a new full-back. TalkSPORT shared news of West Ham interest in signing Southampton star Kyle Walker-Peters last week as one option, as the Englishman dazzles under Russell Martin in the Championship.

That same source claimed Moyes is eager to bring in an alternative to both right-back Vladimir Coufal and left-back Emerson Palmieri, with the beauty of Walker-Peters being he can operate on either flank.

Another astute option for West Ham could be Chelsea starlet Ian Maatsen. The Dutchman looks set to leave Chelsea in January, according to 90min, and they also claim West Ham have expressed an interest in Maatsen as we approach the winter transfer window.

Aaron Cresswell and Ben Johnson's deals also expire in the summer, which could make the need for a new full-back option all the more important at West Ham.

West Ham eyeing Leif Davis move

Providing an update on the Hammers' search for a new left-back, reliable club insider ExWHUemployee says there is a genuine intent to sign one next month. As well as the aforementioned Maatsen, another interesting option for Moyes is Ipswich Town star Leif Davis.

Ex claims West Ham are keen to sign Davis, who is in the form of his life at Portman Road.

“Now, in terms of left-backs, there’s definite interest in Ian Maatsen from Chelsea who we again looked at in the Summer,” said the insider on his West Ham Way website.

“Chelsea chose to keep him on, but haven’t used him much since then. And then there is Leif Davis, who plays for Ipswich. Ipswich are sitting at the top of the Championship with Leicester and look like they’re going to have two back-to-back promotions. He is meant to be one of the stars of their show down there.”

“Aaron Cresswell is a left-back we bought from Ipswich too,” he added, “so there is a good history of that working.”

The 23-year-old is certainly a star of their Championship title push, and has made 21 second tier starts while racking up more assists than anyone in Kieran McKenna's squad.

As per WhoScored, he's one of Ipswich's best-performing players per 90 this season and could seemingly provide West Ham with a real attack-minded option from out wide. Interestingly, Davis has also been called an "animal" by former West Ham midfielder Scott Parker.

"He’s also a young player and he’s not got vast experience in the arena so we’ve had to work and help him through that," said Parker on Davis after a performance for Bournemouth (via The Mail).

"What pleased me the most is that he started slowly in that sense today, then he just grew into the game. He was an animal really and got an assist, so I was pleased for him."

Newcastle’s 4/10 man was a bigger villain than Dan Burn vs Liverpool

Newcastle United started the new year how they finished the previous one. A 4-2 loss at Anfield against Premier League leaders Liverpool was the Magpies’ seventh defeat in their last eight matches in all competitions.

While the Geordie outfit managed to stay in the game for long periods, surviving barrage after barrage of the opposition’s attacks, the team grew tired and weary and succumbed to yet another disappointing result.

Several of Eddie Howe's players put in below-par performances on Merseyside as the Reds ran riot on their own turf. However, one Newcastle star in particular let his side down immeasurably.

Dan Burn’s game in numbers

Heading into this game, it seemed logical for the manager to drop Dan Burn from the side after his display at St. James’ Park during Newcastle’s defeat to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day. The 6 ft 7 defender was handed a 3/10 match rating by Chronicle Live, having failed to cope with Forest’s attack throughout the game, especially Anthony Elanga down his side.

Nevertheless, Mohamed Salah was an entirely different animal than Elanga. Perhaps the best solution would have been to deploy Tino Livramento at left-back but due to Kieran Trippier’s absence with a groin injury, Burn kept his place in the backline while Livramento shifted over to the other side.

Unfortunately, Salah always had the beating of the 31-year-old. Burn was dribbled past three times on the night and struggled to deal with the Egyptian’s pace and agility. Salah scored a brace and registered an assist for Cody Gakpo’s winning goal by flicking the ball around Burn with the outside of his boot.

Additionally, Newcastle’s skipper for the game contributed very little in possession, completing merely one pass into the final third and losing possession eight times before being replaced in the 82nd minute. Regardless, Burn wasn’t the worst Newcastle player on the pitch.

Bruno Guimaraes’ game in numbers

Even by his standards over the past few weeks, Bruno Guimaraes had a night to forget at Anfield as Newcastle United’s midfield found themselves overran time and time again. The visitors failed to get to grips with the game and held just 37% of the ball. One of the reasons for this was Bruno’s carelessness in possession.

The Brazilian lost possession of the ball 19 times throughout the match, causing his side to get hit on the break on countless occasions. Furthermore, Guimaraes boasted a passing accuracy of merely 83%, as per Sofascore, which was well below his season average of 87%.

However, it was the midfielder’s defensive despair during the game that let Newcastle down the most. Having picked up a yellow card when the tie was locked goalless, the 26-year-old was dribbled past twice and committed two fouls.

In addition, the ex-Lyon star lost nine of his 17 total duels, according to Sofascore, and looked afraid to put a foot wrong as a result of his yellow card in the 28th minute. Surviving a substitution, Guimaraes was handed a 4/10 match rating by Chronicle Live for his performance which was lower than any other player for the visitors.

Sarfaraz Ahmed may be rested for Australia series keeping World Cup in mind

Pakistan chief selector says Shoaib Malik is in line to lead the team while Umar Akmal may also be given a recall

Pakistan are likely to rest their captain Sarfaraz Ahmed during the five-match ODI series against Australia starting March 22, with Shoaib Malik in line to lead the team again. Also, chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq told ESPNcricinfo that Umar Akmal may get a recall as the panel looked for a replacement for the injured Mohammad Hafeez. These changes, Inzamam said, were largely to ensure key players don’t break down in the run up to the World Cup, beginning May 2019. “This is my idea [to rest Sarfaraz] and a few others. Our players have been playing for quite long time, Asia Cup [in September 2018], then the series against Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and then straightaway PSL. After PSL there’s no time. There’s the Australia series then there’s Pakistan Cup at home and the England tour.”I don’t think players should play for that long. So I am resting those who are under a lot of stress from last five months and playing in all three formats,” Inzamam said.”If you enter in any event, I have strong belief that you should go with fresh legs, fresh minds, instead of having injuries like stiff backs, shoulder injury, elbow problem or hamstring injury. I don’t think we should enter into such a big tournament like this. We have to enter the tournament with players who are 100% fit and fresh both physically and mentally. Within two months of time, starting from England series, we have to play around 20 to 21 games and it will be a hectic outing to England including practice matches.”Given that schedule, it is understood, lead short-format spinner Shadab Khan may also be given some time off during the Australia series.Meanwhile, the spotlight on Mohammad Amir increased with Inzamam showing concern over his recent form. The left-arm quick has picked up only five wickets in 13 ODIs – averaging 80.80 – since the start of January 2018.Mohammad Amir gets a high-five from a team-mate•AFP

“Amir might not be an automatic selection at this stage but he is a very good bowler and there is no doubt it,” Inzamam said. “Unfortunately, he is not looking in his best form. He has enough time for the World Cup, he will be back in the rhythm.”If a senior bowler like him looks out of form, off-colour, it’s a worry for us, but we still have time for Amir. We still have ten one-dayers and two-three months. Amir can make a comeback. We will give him full chance to make a comeback. He is a big-occasion bowler and we need to have a bowler like him in our armoury.”The other major problem for Pakistan is Hafeez. The allrounder sustained a thumb injury while playing in the PSL last week and is expected to be out for two months. “I am worried about Hafeez’s injury. Doctors are telling me that it will take eight weeks,” Inzamam said.”For the World Cup team, you have been playing for quite some time and there’s not much room to make changes. After Australia series, we have England series, and then practice matches. We can see if Hafeez gets fit by then.”If that doesn’t happen, Inzamam suggested Umar Akmal as a possible option.Umar has been in good form recently, scoring 200 runs in his last five T20s, averaging 66 and striking at 137. But he hasn’t played international cricket since January 2017.”There will be no surprise package and we won’t do any such selection which surprises,” Inzamam said. “I will try to believe in the same team which we have been playing with for quite some time. This is also preparation of World Cup and it’s better to play with the same combination.”There are a few options for us to replace Hafeez, though. Umar Akmal is doing well, we have players in middle-order, we have Hussain Talat who went to South Africa. I wish Hafeez gets fit otherwise we have other options. Umar has performed well so far and we will definitely consider him. It’s a good thing that such tournaments [PSL] have these benefits and you can include them in Pakistan team. An experienced player who has played for us before and is in form, it will be good.”

Aston Villa target Marcos Acuna free to leave Sevilla this month – report

Last year, Aston Villa sporting director Monchi hoped to reunite with full-back Marcos Acuna in the Midlands. Monchi had brought Acuna to Spanish club Sevilla and tried to sign him once again, with the player himself pushing for the move and Unai Emery publicly expressing admiration for a "very good" player.

However, Sevilla believed that Villa's offer was insufficient, and their refusal to budge left Acuna frustrated. Six months on, the Argentine continues to be linked with Emery's side, who are weighing up whether to sell Lucas Digne in the summer.

Digne is among Villa's highest earners at £120,000 per week, and the club recognise that offloading him could be a smart financial move. Acuna could be his replacement, and there's been some encouraging news on that front.

Acuna gets the green light he's wanted

According to Vamos Mi Sevilla, Acuna is now free to leave this month. As he enters the final 18 months of his contract, the La Liga club have decided that the time is right to let him go, with all parties now trying to "seek a transfer". If no move materialises in January, he's expected to depart in the summer.

Marcos Acuna

Acuna has apparently endured a somewhat tumultuous relationship with the club, strained further by their decision to reject Villa's last bid. As such, the door is open for Emery to make a move.

Acuna fits the bill for Emery, but discipline a worry

Acuna, who's now 32, joined Sevilla from Sporting in 2020 and has since racked up 135 appearances for the club, with the highlight of his stint no doubt the 2022/23 Europa League triumph. Even though he missed the final through suspension, he earned a place in the competition's team of the season.

That capped off an incredible year that had also seen him win the World Cup with Argentina, but this season has been markedly more difficult. Sidelined for 10 league matches through injury, he's been limited to eight top-flight appearances thus far.

When fit, though, Acuna clearly fits the stylistic bill for Emery. As noted by The Athletic, the Spaniard wants a left-back who can "essentially become a quasi-left-winger in possession", and his veteran target has played over 150 games in advanced positions on the left flank.

It was in the 2021/22 season that he truly displayed his potency as an offensive full-back, placing fourth in the league for crosses attempted on a whopping 178, and finishing second for completed crosses into the area (27). That production helped to earn him a place in the league's best XI.

Still, there will be big boots to fill if he succeeds Digne. In this year's Premier League, only Newcastle's Kieran Trippier (6.0), Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold (4.2) and Spurs' Pedro Porro (4.1) have posted a higher expected assist figure than Digne (2.7) among all defenders, and he also ranks fifth in his position for key passes (29). Only Trippier has found a teammate with more crosses (14 vs 13).

One area of concern around Acuna is discipline. No player in Europe's top five leagues was sent off more last season (three times), and he's amassed a whopping 33 yellow cards since he arrived at Sevilla. He could put Villa in tricky positions if he gets himself either dismissed or suspended, which would be a source of frustration for fans.

Injured Steyn to return to SA with an eye on World Cup fitness

With the fast bowler suffering a flare-up to his right shoulder, Cricket South Africa are putting measures in place in an attempt to get him ready for the World Cup

Liam Brickhill25-Apr-2019

BCCI

A shoulder injury to Dale Steyn has thrown South Africa’s World Cup preparations off track, with the 35-year-old fast bowler cutting his time with Royal Challengers Bangalore at the IPL short after only two games.Steyn will return to South Africa after his right shoulder – which had previously been seriously injured – flared up. He will be assessed by a shoulder specialist, with Cricket South Africa putting measures in place in an attempt to get him ready for the World Cup next month.South Africa’s other injury concerns

Having recovered from knee ligament damage picked up in the field during South Africa’s trip to Australia, Lungi Ngidi sustained a Grade II muscle strain in his side while bowling against Sri Lanka in the fifth ODI last month. The strain will require four weeks of rest followed by a rehab programme in the lead-up to the World Cup.

Anrich Nortje also played in that fifth ODI, but he picked up an injury in his bowling shoulder that requires six weeks on the sidelines. That ruled him out of the ongoing IPL season, where he would have been part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad, and his timeline for achieving fitness before the start of the World Cup is quite slim. Nortje is currently seeing a specialist in Cape Town, and CSA say he is on course for his recovery process. He will join the national academy at CSA’s High Performance Centre this week – along with Ngidi – and continue to work under high-performance coaches Shukrie Conrad and Vincent Barnes.

JP Duminy missed most of the home season after aggravating a long-standing shoulder injury during Zimbabwe’s visit in September. His recovery required surgery, and though Duminy returned to competitive cricket with Cape Cobras in March before slotting back into the South Africa side, he has not yet played a game in the CSA T20 Challenge. He has missed games in the T20 Challenge to allow him to continue his physiotherapy and conditioning regime for his shoulder. Duminy will also join the national academy, and is expected to play against the visiting Afghanistan Academy next week.

Tabraiz Shamsi has not played competitive cricket for almost a month after experiencing slight discomfort in his lower back while playing for Titans in the last two games of their triumphant One-Day Cup tournament campaign. As a precaution, he was withdrawn from the CSA T20 Challenge and is undergoing physiotherapy and rehab. He is expected to be fully fit when the team assembles for their camp on May 12.

Andile Phehlukwayo picked up an injury in his right foot, but it was minor and he has since recovered and has turned out for Dolphins in the ongoing CSA T20 Challenge.

“Dale felt discomfort after playing his second match at the tournament,” explained South Africa team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee. “Upon assessment and subsequent investigations, a flare-up of his right shoulder was confirmed. With the World Cup around the corner, it is our priority to get him back to full fitness before the squad departs on May 19. He will consult with a shoulder specialist upon his return and a recovery plan will be put in place.”Having gone unsold at the IPL 2019 auction, Steyn was a late addition to Royal Challengers’ roster. He jetted in as a replacement for Nathan Coulter-Nile, who pulled out of the tournament with a stiff back. Royal Challengers won both the matches Steyn played in, with the fast bowler taking 2 for 40 against Kolkata Knight Riders and following that up with 2 for 29 in the one-run win over Chennai Super Kings.”Dale Steyn has been prescribed ample rest due to inflammation in his shoulder,” said Royal Challengers chairman Sanjeev Churiwala. “On account of state of his health, Dale will not be available to take part further in the ongoing season of IPL.”His presence has helped the team immensely and we are very thankful for the inspiration and passion that he brought to the squad. The team will deeply miss his energy and presence around. We wish him a speedy recovery and all the luck for all future endeavours.”Steyn has been named in South Africa’s 15-man squad for the World Cup, but it is unclear yet how much time he will take to recover. South Africa’s squad will assemble for their week-long camp on May 12, prior to their departure for the tournament.Worryingly, Steyn’s current injury has flared up in the same shoulder in which he snapped a coracoid bone during South Africa’s tour of Australia in November 2016. That injury almost ended his career, and required surgery and 13 months in recovery. During the Wanderers Test match against Pakistan earlier this year, Steyn left the field early on the second day clutching the same shoulder, causing worries in the South Africa camp, but that injury scare did not prove to be serious, and he later returned to the field to help wrap up a 107-run win.The full extent of the latest flare-up remains to be seen, but if Steyn is unable to recover in time to play in the World Cup, it could signal the end of his white-ball career. Steyn has hinted that he would retire from ODI cricket after the tournament, but has made clear his intentions to keep playing Test cricket. The World Cup squad named by South Africa can be amended until 23 May, one week before their tournament opener against England at The Oval.
