Can Daredevils stay relevant in the race to the playoffs?

To do that, they must find a way to tackle Sunrisers Hyderabad’s bowlers, who have been strangling opposition line-ups all season

The Preview by Nikhil Kalro04-May-20184:42

Tait: Yusuf can be dangerous, but hasn’t done enough

Form guide (most recent matches first)

Sunrisers Hyderabad: beat Rajasthan Royals by 11 runs, beat Kings XI Punjab by 13 runs, beat Mumbai Indians by 31 runs
Delhi Daredevils: beat Rajasthan Royals by four runs (DLS method), lost to Chennai Super Kings by 13 runs, beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 55 runs.

Big PictureA change in leadership is the natural response for a faltering organisation – in business and in sports. Occasionally, a professional sports team still fails to rally around a new captain for several reasons, the lack of skill being the most influential factor. On other occasions, a team finds success with a new group of players immediately, like Delhi Daredevils under Shreyas Iyer.Delhi have won two of their last three games after Gautam Gambhir’s exclusion. Overall, they have three wins in nine games. Iyer, Rishabh Pant and Prithvi Shaw have sparkled, but there are still too many holes. Glenn Maxwell, Jason Roy and Colin Munro haven’t been substantial contributors, and Daredevils still haven’t found their best bowling combination.Sunrisers Hyderabad, on the other hand, have hardly had to bother with the quality of their bowling. They have defended 151, 132 and 118 in their previous three games. The absence of David Warner has discernibly weakened their batting, but it hasn’t hampered the efficiency. That they lead the points table without a 180-plus score – the only team not to cross that mark in the IPL this season – can attest to that.In the newsBhuvneshwar Kumar, who missed the last two games with a back injury, could return on Saturday. Captain Kane Williamson said “it wasn’t a serious injury, but something he did need to allow rest.”BCCI

Likely XIsSunrisers Hyderabad: 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Alex Hales, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Manish Pandey, 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Yusuf Pathan, 7 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Sandeep Sharma, 11 Siddarth KaulDelhi Daredevils: 1 Prithvi Shaw, 2 Colin Munro/Jason Roy, 3 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 4 Rishabh Pant (wk), 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Vijay Shankar, 7 Liam Plunkett, 8 Amit Mishra, 9 Avesh Khan, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Shahbaz NadeemStrategy puntPrithvi Shaw has aced pace so far in this season. He has scored at a strike rate of 181.4 against pace, but just 132 against spinners. Colin Munro too has scored quicker against pace (164.5) than spin (144.2) in T20s since 2015. In that same period, Jason Roy has a strike rate of 152.1 against pace, but 124.9 against spin.Sunrisers could not only start with spin, but could use slower bowlers in tandem against Daredevils’ openers.Stats that matter As per the numbers, Sunrisers are the worst batting team in every phase – Powerplay, middle and death overs – of an innings this season. They are also the best bowling team in every phase of an innings. The average score batting first in day-night games at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium last season was 172. That par score has come down considerably this season, to 134. Sunrisers have not lost a game defending a total this season, in three games. Daredevils have won just one of five games while chasing a target this season. Fantasy pickThe Hyderabad surface this season has been quite slow and has taken plenty of turn. That generally means that batting could get gradually harder, which makes the Powerplay the best time to score. Alex Hales is, therefore, a batsman that could score quickly earlier on, earning some valuable fantasy points.

Sarfraz and Shadab, the stars of a power-packed show

The Pakistan captain made 89 off only 49 balls while the young legspinner picked up 2 for 25 in a high-scoring match

Danyal Rasool12-Jun-2018After the famously stirring victory against England, Scotland were brought back down to earth by a ruthlessly professional performance from Pakistan, who took a 1-0 lead in the T20I series with a 48-run win in Edinburgh. After winning what looked like a crucial toss, Sarfraz Ahmed made the right decision this time, batting first on a pancake of a track. He was instrumental to the victory, top-scoring with an unbeaten 89 using all the craft and street-smartness that makes him such a compelling player to watch. Aided by the evergreen Shoaib Malik, who smashed five sixes in a 27-ball 53, Pakistan amassed their second-highest T20I score, reaching 204.The last five overs was absolute carnage. Eighty runs came off them with Scotland bowling in shoddy fashion. The decision to use debutant left-arm spinner Hamza Tahir when the Sarfraz-Shoaib partnership was at its most devastating phase was somewhat bizarre. Final figures of 4-0-57-0 suggest it didn’t quite work either. The game didn’t pass without shades of the Scottish side that so thrillingly upstaged the old enemy England a couple of days ago. After an ominously explosive start by Pakistan – chiefly Fakhar Zaman, who was given a reprieve after Michael Leask put down an easy chance, Scotland had the better of the middle overs. Leask, Mark Watt and Alasdair Evans – the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 23 – strangled Pakistan after the Powerplay. Hussain Talat never looked comfortable at the crease and Sarfraz was struggling for rhythm early, all of which contributed to the run-rate hovering around 8, well below par for a batting paradise. The start of the Scottish innings suggested they were well up for the chase. Coetzer was impressive, surgically picking out gaps in a Powerplay field before lofting Mohammad Amir for a six straight over his head. A remarkable reverse-swept six off Mohammad Nawaz from George Munsey in the first over was perhaps the shot of the match, and the causal impudence with which it was attempted signified the journey Scotland have been through to feel comfortable enough at this level. By the end of the fifth over, Scotland had reached fifty without loss, keeping on top of the run-rate and ahead of Pakistan at that stage. But it was around that point the game began to peter out as a contest, with Pakistan showing why they are such a potent side. The bowlers stepped up as they sniffed an opening. Coetzer had been deprived of the strike since Hasan Ali had removed Munsey in the sixth over and he fell trying to regain the lost momentum. The focus then switched to Calum MacLeod given his heroics against England the other day, and the mouth-watering match-up with Shadab Khan.It didn’t quite live up to expectations, however. The batsman did get off the mark with a superb sweep shot off the legspinner to whet the appetite, but was dismissed by a wrong’un in the following over. It wasn’t much of a delivery, a long hop that turned back in, but MacLeod missed the slog. The umpire deemed the ball to have hit the pad in line with the stumps. At 84 for 4 in the 12th over, Scotland were in danger of collapsing to a huge defeat, but the lower middle order hung around to prevent such embarrassment. Dylan Budge and Michael Leask added 43 runs in 3.3 overs to send a parting shot Pakistan’s way for the second game that begins on Wednesday. There were no two ways about it, though. Pakistan are the better team, and they showed it with a performance that outclassed their hosts in all three departments. However, it did take a full-strength side to do it, and Scotland had their moments. Knitting those together for a match-winning performance has been something that has eluded nearly all of Pakistan’s opponents in the last two years. Scotland may have become the latest victims, but with the way their week of cricket has gone, they will be feeling anything but that.

West Ham: Door "opening" for star to leave after update

West Ham's door is opening for one player to leave with negotiations over staying now on the brink of collapse, according to reports.

New contracts at West Ham

The east Londoners have been moving to tie down both key players and exciting talents for the future. Indeed, most recently, star winger Jarrod Bowen committed his future to West Ham by signing a seven-year contract, which will take the player well into his 30s. This is despite Liverpool transfer rumours suggesting an interest in Bowen from Jurgen Klopp, which will come as a big boost for manager David Moyes.

Speaking after West Ham confirmed the England international's new deal, Moyes was left delighted.

West Ham United managerDavidMoyesbefore the match

“We’re delighted Jarrod has agreed a new deal," said the Scotsman to West Ham's official website.

It’s a brilliant piece of business from the club to tie him down to a new long-term contract. His goal in Prague will live long in the memory for everyone connected to West Ham – it’s given him a platform to go from strength to strength and we’re really reaping the benefits, he’s getting better and better. He’s a fantastic boy and an outstanding professional – I’m sure his positive progress will continue over the course of his new contract.”

Alongside Bowen, West Ham have also tied down exciting teenage midfielder Dan Rigge, who was reported to be attracting interest from major clubs.

“I am very proud,” said Rigge after the West Ham contract announcement.

“It is a huge moment for me and my family because it is every young player's dream to sign their first professional contract, especially at a club like West Ham United. It has given me a lot of confidence that the Club believes in me and hopefully I can do well at West Ham in the future. I have really enjoyed my time here so far. I felt really welcomed when I arrived ahead of last season and I am delighted to continue my development here.”

Tomas Soucek contract update

West Ham had been tipped to secure extensions for the likes of Tomas Soucek too, but according to a new report by Football Insider and journalist Pete O'Rourke, those talks have taken a downturn following a "major" update. The Czech Republic international's negotiations over fresh terms have apparently stalled over the last year, with Soucek out of contract at the end of 2023/2024.

West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek.

Indeed, the Hammers are keen to keep hold of Soucek, holding discussions over a new deal, but the lack of progress is "opening the door" for his exit and interested clubs including Serie A giants Inter. Soucek is a key component of the West Ham midfield and got on the scoresheet against Newcastle, with Moyes picking him out for praise.

"I’m pleased for Tomáš as he is making a good contribution with his goals, as did Mo today who got his first one for us, which was great," said Moyes.

"We have played Tomáš a bit higher in the last couple of games to try and get him near the box. Today was tough because we couldn’t get enough crosses or balls near the edge of their box, but he made it and he got the goal."

Karunaratne has been brilliant in the last year or so – Mathews

Having known him since high school, Mathews feels the opener has added a lot of stability to the inexperienced Sri Lanka side

Andrew Fidel Fernando 22-Jul-2018

Dimuth Karunaratne raises his bat after reaching a century•AFP

Dimuth Karunaratne’s outstanding run over the past 18 months is down largely to his experience. So said Angelo Mathews, of a batsman he has known since high school. He and Karunaratne played together for St. Joseph’s College in Colombo, for a team in which Mathews was the star captain. But Mathews, like everyone else, has been lavishly outscored by Karunaratne in bowler-friendly series.Karunaratne’s aggregate across the two Tests is 356 – 195 runs more than the next highest-scorer. He has also passed 50 in each of his four innings, and is the only centurion so far, having made 158 not out in the first innings in Galle.”With experience you improve, and you learn from your mistakes,” Mathews said. “We all can see that Dimuth is not repeating his mistakes. That is the quality a batsman should have. I have been with him since school. I know him in and out and he is a strong character. He doesn’t easily give up.”Although Karunaratne was an inconsistent performer in the first few years of his career, he has seemingly matured into a more reliably run-producer since the start of 2017. He had scored over 1000 runs in the last calendar year, in which he hit centuries against Bangladesh and India, as well as making 196 against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi – an innings that set up victory in that game. Now, in 2018, he averages 65.15 after four Tests.”The way he has batted in the last year or so has been brilliant,” Mathews said. “He was outstanding in UAE when he got those huge runs in both games. Once again, here, he showed that on difficult wickets he can score runs. If you all recall, on a difficult wicket against India at the SSC last year, he scored a hundred as well. He has added a lot of stability into our line-up.”What Karunaratne has done well on the spin-friendly pitches in this series, is search out scoring opportunities, Mathews said. “You always can get a good ball on these wickets. You can’t wait for the good ball. On these tracks, you’ve got to score runs, and keep rotating the strike so that it gets easier. That’s what Dimuth has done.”Although Karunaratne has helped set up the series whitewash, Sri Lanka require five more wickets to close out the second Test.”Beating the No. 2 team in the world is something special, and it’s going to be a huge achievement for us as we’re an inexperienced side,” Mathews said. “We will enjoy that. But we have a job at hand tomorrow morning. The first couple of wickets are going to be crucial. If we can knock off a couple early then we can enjoy the victory.”

Leeds had a mare by loaning out ace who’s outscored Gnonto this season

Leeds United were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2022/23 campaign after three years at the top table of English football.

The Whites were promoted under Marcelo Bielsa in 2020 and stayed up under the Argentine boss and then Jesse Marsch. However, a combination of Marsch, Javi Gracia, and Sam Allardyce failed to keep them up last term.

An instant return to the top-flight is now on the agenda for the Yorkshire-based outfit and German boss Daniel Farke has been brought in to secure it.

The impressive tactician won two Championship titles during his time with Norwich City earlier in his career and is now looking for a third promotion to the Premier League.

Farke's Championship title-winning seasons with Norwich (via Sky Sports):

However, his squad was dealt a number of blows as the likes of Tyler Adams, Rodrigo, Max Wober, Robin Koch, Jack Harrison, Luis Sinisterra, and Marc Roca moved on either permanently or out on loan.

One decision that the German head coach made that may come back to haunt him, though, is the one to loan out talented young midfielder Sam Greenwood, who has outscored Wilfried Gnonto, Dan James, and Jaidon Anthony this season.

Why Leeds could lose Greenwood permanently

The Whites could lose the ex-Arsenal prospect on a permanent deal at the end of the 2023/24 campaign as they included a purchase option within his loan deal with Middlesbrough.

It was recently reported by The Athletic that Boro negotiated an option to sign Greenwood for £1.5m during next summer's transfer window if they decide the fit is right by that point.

This means that, essentially, Farke and Leeds have little say in what happens with the midfield technician next year as his current club have the chance to snap him up permanently if they want to.

Leeds United forward Sam Greenwood.

If Middlesbrough do decide that they want to activate that £1.5m buyout clause and the Whites do not want to lose him then they would need to convince the player to turn down the opportunity to return to Teesside.

This could be a difficult task when you consider that Leeds were willing to sanction a possible permanent exit for him last summer and decided that he was not ready for their first-team.

Greenwood has been shown faith by Boro and may, therefore, prefer a switch to Michael Carrick's side over coming back to Elland Road if it comes down to it next summer.

Sam Greenwood's statistics this season

The 21-year-old whiz, who former Leeds ace Noel Whelan hailed for his "immense" ability, endured a slow start to life at Middlesbrough as his first four appearances for the club came as a substitute in the Championship.

However, he has since broken into the starting XI and has started each of their last four league matches, which has allowed him to showcase his quality out wide.

Greenwood has been deployed on the left of an attacking midfield trio behind the main centre-forward and has caught the eye with his recent attacking contributions.

The right-footed wizard has scored two goals in four starts, both of which came within the last three games, and the latest of those came in their 2-1 win over Norwich City on Tuesday night.

He produced a fantastic display against the Canaries earlier this week with a Sofascore rating of 7.7, which was the highest score of any player for either side.

The English dynamo scored the opening goal for Boro as he arrived in the right place at the right time to finish from close range after Norwich gave possession away on the opposite side of the pitch.

Greenwood also won seven of his 12 duels and completed all three of his attempted dribbles. These statistics show that the talented gem offered strength out of possession and helped to carry his team up the pitch with his dribbling quality.

To the latter point, the former Sunderland academy ace has completed 15 progressive carries in his last four matches for Boro and this shows that, alongside a goal threat, the Leeds loanee can provide value in transition.

Farke may now be looking at the gem's recent performances and wondering whether or not it was a mistake to part ways with the 21-year-old ace, particularly when he looks at how his current wing options have performed in front of goal.

Wilfried Gnonto's statistics this season

Gnonto has scored one goal in six Championship starts, with one further appearance off the bench, throughout the 2023/24 campaign so far.

The Italy international was brought back into the starting XI against Stoke on Wednesday night and failed to make the most of his opportunity to shine. He failed to provide a single shot on target, completed dribble, or chance created for his teammates in 70 minutes on the pitch.

Leeds forward Wilfried Gnonto.

Chances have not been particularly hard to come by for the 19-year-old whiz as he has already missed two 'big chances' and taken 1.6 shots per game, which suggests that his current return of one goal has been an underperformance.

Whereas, Greenwood has taken 1.3 shots per match and has not missed a single 'big chance' in front of goal to go along with his two league strikes.

Gnonto is not the only Leeds forward who has been outperformed in front of goal by the Boro star, though, as Anthony and James have also only scored one goal each in the league so far this season. The latter has, at least, provided four assists but the Bournemouth loanee is yet to register a single assist.

Meanwhile, Ian Poveda, Patrick Bamford, and Joe Gelhardt were all kept around to be part of the squad and have combined for zero goals and zero assists in 15 league appearances between them.

These statistics suggest that Leeds could have benefitted from keeping the 5 foot 11 dynamo as part of their squad to bolster their attacking options out wide.

The Whites have not had a steady stream of goals from those positions, outside of Crysencio Summerville's four strikes, and this was illustrated on Wednesday as Anthony and Gnonto started out wide and failed to make an impact in the final third as Farke's men lost 1-0 to Leeds.
