Man Utd Make Approach For "Magnificent" £31m Amrabat Alternative

Manchester United are expected to sign a midfielder before the summer transfer window slams shut later today, and while a certain Moroccan midfielder is the prime target, contingency plans appear to have been made.

What's the latest on Youssouf Fofana to Manchester United?

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, United manager Erik ten Hag has seen a formal offer rejected by French side Monaco for Youssouf Fofana.

Read the latest Man United transfer news HERE…

The Italian journalist has also recently confirmed that Manchester United have asked Monaco for the conditions of a loan deal for Fofana, with Inter Milan also approaching the Ligue 1 club, but manager Adi Hutter will only entertain a permanent sale as Monaco "don't want to let Fofana leave on loan."

How good is Youssouf Fofana?

While the Red Devils have earmarked Fofana for transfer, it is Fiorentina's Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat who is the most coveted name at the Theatre of Dreams, with Romano claiming yesterday that the outfit are set to enter negotiations for the player once again, with Amrabat set on joining the squad.

The Premier League side have clinched six points from their open three matches but did not look wholly convincing in either game as two contentious decisions worked in Old Trafford's favour to secure slender victories over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest.

Amrabat is desired due to his first-rate passing skills and tenacity in the centre, having been integral in Morocco's remarkable 2022 World Cup campaign in Qatar, and the 27-year-old being praised as the "best central midfielder in the tournament" by reporter Carlo Garganese.

The £32k-per-week powerhouse also ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion and the top 2% for passes attempted and progressive passes per 90, as per FBref, highlighting the kind of crisp composure Ten Hag desires to take United to the next level.

youssouf-fofana-premier-league-west-ham-transfers

While he is undoubtedly one of the finest ball-playing midfielders around, United might need more of an all-encompassing cog in the centre to get the machine whirring at full strength.

Having been hailed as a "magnificent" player by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the French machine was a central component to Monaco's 2022/23 season and demonstrated his rounded skill set with his league performances last year, earning an average Sofascore rating of 6.85, completing 82% of his passes, making 1.6 interceptions and 2.3 tackles per game and averaging 0.9 key passes each match.

For comparison, while Amrabat completed 90% of his passes in Serie A with La Viola last term, he only averaged 1.3 tackles and 0.7 interceptions per game, also only making 0.4 passes each match, less influential in progressing the play.

Fofana also ranks among the top 11% of midfielders for progressive passes, the top 14% for progressive carries and the top 15% for successful take-ons per 90, showcasing his energetic presence and willingness to drive the ball upfield.

Finances might come into play, with Monaco demanding a permanent sale whereas indications suggest that Fiorentina might be willing to do business on an initial loan.

And while Amrabat is a superlative ball player, Ten Hag must consider opting for the more dynamic option to enhance the collective level of the Red Devils squad, and if a deal is feasible, he must strike.

Warner targets 'obscure fields' for Eden Park's short boundaries

Australia’s stand-in T20 captain is going to rely on enterprising leadership as an answer to Eden Park’s short boundaries for the tri-series final against New Zealand on Wednesday

Australia’s stand-in T20 captain David Warner is going to rely on enterprising leadership as an answer to Eden Park’s short boundaries for the tri-series final against New Zealand on Wednesday. Warner, who is filling in for Steven Smith, is eyeing a series win that will thrust Australia from No. 2 to No. 1 in a format they have historically struggled in. After stunning New Zealand with a world-record T20 chase in their last match also played at the same venue, Warner called for the need to be able to think on the fly.”It’s probably one of those grounds where you should be able to have five [fielders] out straight away, as it doesn’t really matter,” he said. “It’s a challenge. As a captain or as a bowler, we talk about setting fields, and I think you have to have obscure fields. You might have a deep fly slip instead of a third man. They’re bizarre little catching spots, where you might get a catch.”In Australia, you set fields for certain players where they’re going to hit. Here, [in] those fields, generally they can hit it for six. Where’s a mistimed pull shot going to go? Over the top for six? You might have one just behind the keeper. You might have, for the spinners, everyone on the straight boundary and no one there (square of the wicket), and make them try to hit a reverse sweep and maybe get a wicket. You’ve just got to think on your feet when you’re out there. You’ve just got to find a way to get one or two wickets in the first six [overs]; it’s as simple as that.”Australia have fared well under Warner’s leadership. They were the first team to book their spot in the final. However, Warner preferred to leave the full-time captaincy question with Smith. “At the end of the day, it’s up to Steve. If he thinks his workloads are too high and he doesn’t feel like he can do that, I’m sure he’ll put his hand up and step aside. We spoke about one of us in the leadership group staying back and leading the [T20] team, and obviously, I put my hand up for that.”It’s been fantastic. A few of us were mentally cooked after the Test series, and it’s just great for those guys to go over to South Africa and inject a lot of younger guys and guys who are in form [into the T20 side].”The final is set to be played on a slightly worn surface – the same one that was used for Friday’s slugfest. Providing the weather holds up – Auckland experienced heavy showers on match eve due to Cyclone Gita – that could pave the way for the re-entry of Adam Zampa, with Warner open to the option of playing two spinners. Since playing the tri-series opener, Zampa has been overlooked in favour of the left-arm spinner Ashton Agar.”The other day, it looked a little bit drier than game day,” Warner said. “There’s obviously a bit of weather around. We’ll probably get a look at it tonight, hopefully, if the weather holds off.”With New Zealand coach Mike Hesson having said on Monday that left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner was expected to recover from a minor knee injury, captain Kane Williamson, too, didn’t rule out the possibility of a spinner-centric attack. “Hopefully, it starts to take a little bit more turn and offers a little more assistance to the bowlers to create that balance between bat and ball,” he said. “If that’s the case, spin will come into it a little bit more as an attacking option.”Friday’s run fest raised eyebrows at Eden Park’s notoriously short boundaries. And an overall high-scoring second half of the tri-series led to England coach Trevor Bayliss calling for T20s to be scrapped altogether at the international level after England failed to make the final. However, Williamson leaned more towards his coach, Hesson, who had spoken highly of Eden Park, which he called a “great cricket venue”.”We’ve had some of the most fantastic games of cricket there,” Williamson said. “This last game’s been the first time really that we’ve seen it exposed as a really small ground, because a lot of the scores have been on the lower side.”For one reason or another, we’ve seen so many really close games, which has created some of the best atmospheres that I’ve been involved in in any cricket game in the world. It’s provided some amazing moments for New Zealand cricket and the teams that we’ve been involved in, and when you throw that into the mix, it does make it enjoyable.”

Arsenal: Hale End has now spawned an "exciting" Bukayo Saka clone

Arsenal boast one of the most prolific and successful academies in English football history, having consistently produced a steady stream of stars who have either shone within their first team, or gone on to enjoy fine careers elsewhere.

The likes of Tony Adams, Paul Merson, Ashley Cole and more of days gone by all owe their success to the platform handed them by the Gunners, with there being no end in sight for the sensational talents that Hale End continues to spit out.

It marks such a profitable endeavour to boast an academy as incredible as theirs, and whether those stars help them progress, the alternative funds secured are vital in their continued compliance with FFP. For example, despite their huge spending spree this summer, the £35m sale of graduate Folarin Balogun offset that massively.

However, above all else in that regard at the moment is Bukayo Saka, who marks the crown jewel of their academy production, and the man on whom Mikel Arteta will be holding much of his future success upon.

How long has Bukayo Saka been at Arsenal?

Saka has been at the club since the tender age of seven, meaning Arsenal was always going to hold a special place in the 21-year-old's heart, as he slowly rose through the ranks with both club and country.

With appearances for every England setup from U15s onwards, having since amassed 28 caps for the senior squad, it is fair to say that he has more than made it now.

mohammed-kudus-bukayo-saka-west-ham-opinion-premier-league

Gareth Southgate, the current England manager who nurtured him into his setup, even recently noted when asked if he thought Saka could become an elite player: "I think he is already there. He broke into a team [Arsenal] having a difficult time and performing at a high level, then when the team was playing well he’s still performing. That says everything. He’s exceptional to work with."

It is a testament to his quality that he performs so admirably on any stage handed to him, with the winger having only just been presented with the England Men's Player of the Year award for the second consecutive year too.

However, it is his work with his boyhood club that has truly caught the eye, as an ever-present fixture of Arteta's ever-evolving outfit.

How many goals has Bukayo Saka scored for Arsenal?

The youngster has featured in every Premier League match for two successive seasons now too, since breaking Merson's record for most consecutive league starts.

It is amazing just how consistent the £103m-rated maverick manages to be, as a goal threat and creative influence who is more than willing to track back and help out his side too.

As such, last term marked his finest to date, as he scored 14 and assisted a further 11 in the league, building upon the 18 goal contributions he posted the year prior. It's a tally that has taken him to 40 goals at the age of just 22.

amario-Cozier-Duberry

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Tim Sherwood was keen to voice his admiration for the trickster on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday (26/08/2023): "He wants to work hard, he wants to prove to Mikel Arteta that he is the real deal. The durability of him to play that amount of games, everyone talks about now, ‘Oh the games come thick and fast and they need a break and rest period’, this boy doesn’t.

"This boy is made of different stuff. You know, if you left him out and said, ‘I want to rest you’, he’d be devastated. He wants to play every single week and why wouldn’t you?”

“He’s at one of the biggest clubs in the country, he’s got all the facilities in the world. He’s got a magnificent young manager who believes in him…I can’t speak highly enough of him, from the academy, the best player they had last season and probably going to be the player of the season this year, one of their own.”

His kind of technical quality cannot be overstated, but the mindset he pairs it with will truly take him to the very top. However, in keeping with their immense academy production, murmurs are emerging in north London that suggest a Saka clone is currently in production. Meet Amario Cozier-Duberry.

Who is Amario Cozier-Duberry?

"He reminds me of Bukayo Saka, plays in the same position as him, needs to get better with his decision-making like Bukayo did, but he’s definitely exciting," noted Jack Wilshere on Amario Cozier-Duberry, the 18-year-old winger seemingly billed as the next big thing to emerge at the Emirates.

And with good reason, given his recent performances for various youth teams, where the teenage sensation has put himself on the map with his quick feet, scorching pace and lethal left foot.

Last season saw him score five and assist a further four in the Premier League 2, whilst also notching eight goal contributions across just six FA Youth Cup matches as they ran riot on their way to the final before failing to beat West Ham United.

Not only that, but throughout their participation in the Football League Trophy, his 7.95 average rating was upheld by three goal contributions, and perhaps more importantly 1.5 tackles per game, via Sofascore.

It seems that Cozier-Duberry shares that work rate that has made Saka so feared, with the England international having recorded 1.7 tackles per game of his own last term in the Premier League.

Equally as clinical in front of goal as he is magic in possession, with this sprawling attacking skillset it is no wonder that Arteta has included Cozier-Duberry in the senior match-day squad on occasion.

In fact, when Wilshere was allowed to continue speaking on his young star, he even admitted that the Spaniard was already keeping a close eye on his progression: "His super-strengths are his ball-carrying and ability to take people on. He’s an exciting footballer, but (has) loads to learn. Amario is very exciting and Mikel likes him. In some moments he’s unplayable. You give him the ball and he can make things happen."

With a preference for the right flank, allowing him to cut inside on his favoured foot, it seems that somehow they have done it again with the production of a gem with striking similarities to the otherwise unparalleled Saka.

The hope will be that Arteta can come to some solution that allows the two stars to shine within the same side in the near future, as Arsenal's famed academy hopes to be the catalyst that brings the elite honours back to north London.

Ashwin, Iyer to lead Deodhar Trophy squads

Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav will also feature in the 50-overs tournament while Ravindra Jadeja has been chosen to play for Rest of India in the Irani Cup

A day after being named Kings XI Punjab’s captain, R Ashwin has been given the leadership of another team. The BCCI selection committee has named the India spinner captain of the India A side that will compete against Karnataka – who, on Tuesday, won the Vijay Hazare Trophy – and India B in the 50-overs Deodhar Trophy from March 4 to 8 in Dharamsala. India middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer will lead the India B side.Test fast bowlers Mohammed Shami (India A) and Umesh Yadav (India B) have also found places in the Deodhar Trophy squads. Shami has not played any cricket since the third Test against South Africa in Johannesburg while Umesh, who featured in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Vidarbha, sat out all three Tests in South Africa, having slipped behind newcomer Jasprit Bumrah in the fast-bowling pecking order.Other notable selections in the Deodhar Trophy squads include the top-order pair of Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill (both India A), who were part of India’s victorious Under-19 World Cup campaign in New Zealand, spin-bowling allrounder Jayant Yadav, who played for India in the 2016-17 home season (India B), fast bowlers Siddarth Kaul (India B) and Navdeep Saini (India A), who have been on the India selectors’ radar recently, and wicketkeepers Ishan Kishan (India A) and KS Bharat (India B).Shaw, Jayant, Kaul, Saini and Bharat have also found places in the Rest of India side that will face Ranji Trophy champions Vidarbha in the first-class Irani Cup match from March 14 to 18 in Nagpur. Leeds: Farke’s "incredible" whiz could ease Gnonto blow

Leeds United were held to another disappointing midweek result last time out, as the MKM Stadium played host to a bore draw with Hull City.

However, for the visitors, the clash was largely marred by the injury sustained by Wilfried Gnonto, which forced the winger to be removed after just 21 minutes. The worry now is how long Daniel Farke might have to go without him.

How long is Wilfried Gnonto injured for?

Bringing down Scott Twine near the halfway line, the entanglement clearly had an instant impact on the Italy international's ankle, as he immediately looked to the bench.

Not to take even the slightest chance, Crysencio Summerville, a fine stand-in, was stripped and readied for action.

However, with another important clash with Watford drawing ever closer, Farke delivered the crushing news in his pre-match press conference to devastate fans. The 46-year-old claimed: "Sadly, bad news with him, because he has done his lateral ankle ligament. We wait for further assessment this afternoon with how long he will be out, but he definitely will not be available tomorrow."

What makes this such a hammer blow is not how hard they worked to actually keep him at the club during a summer of bids and transfer requests, but instead how he had started the season, brushing aside those distractions to star.

His 6.90 average match rating marked a fine return despite having only scored the one goal, but his pace and trickery made him a consistent threat on whichever wing he was deployed, via Sofascore.

Fortunately, the club had seemingly prepared for such an occurrence, with Daniel James among others ready to take his spot. However, perhaps Farke should look deeper into his squad, instead handing Jaidon Anthony the opportunity to impress after his Deadline-Day loan move.

How good is Jaidon Anthony?

Having joined as part of Luis Sinisterra's switch in the other direction, the AFC Bournemouth man drew the short end of the stick given how integral he was in their promotion before making just 13 Premier League starts last season, and has now been shipped back into the Championship.

However, it marks an outstanding opportunity to showcase his talents all over again, for a club steeped in history and tradition.

Looking back on that 2021/22 term, there is every reason for fans to be excited, and for Farke to choose him over James.

After all, he would maintain a 7.16 average rating across the 45 appearances he made, bolstered by his eight goals and seven assists. On top of this, a creative and combative nature emerged too, also recording 1.6 key passes and 1.3 tackles per game, via Sofascore.

jaidon-anthony

Although James has started the season well, assisting twice in four starts and proving a similarly consistent threat, his inability to make an impact from the start against the Tigers was damning. – with Leeds Live's Beren Cross noting that it was a 'night that made him look like a better option to make an impact off the bench'.

Perhaps his role would be better served as a substitute, as Cross alluded to, allowing Anthony to once again strut his stuff in a division where he has a history of excelling.

After all, former boss Scott Parker was keen to praise the winger's role in their promotion push at the time: "Jaidon Anthony’s a player that goes under the radar massively, what he does for this team is nothing short of incredible at times. In possession, we see his qualities, his calmness, his silkiness when he makes good decisions but the stuff that goes unnoticed is his defensive side, what he brings to this team."

Given that is Farke's main goal for the campaign, it marks a no-brainer to offset their Gnonto blow by unleashing the Englishman.
