The equation is simple ahead of the New Zealand-Bangladesh game: the winner will remain in contention for a semi-final spot, if England beat Australia or their match is washed out

Agarkar: Bangladesh need to step up with the bat
The equation is quite simple ahead of the New Zealand-Bangladesh game: the winner will remain in contention for a semi-final spot if, on June 10, England beat Australia or their match is washed out. However, if Australia beat England, then both New Zealand and Bangladesh are out of the Champions Trophy.Disappointment of an early exit won’t be setting in for either camp at this point. Staying abreast of the situation is what both New Zealand and Bangladesh will be striving for. They have been meeting quite regularly in the last six months, with New Zealand getting the better of most exchanges.Back in December, New Zealand won their home ODI series 3-0. But in the second of two encounters in Ireland last month, Bangladesh claimed their first overseas win, albeit that New Zealand were missing five of their first-choice XI. New Zealand now have the likes of Kane Williamson, Trent Boult and Tim Southee back in their line-up, and hope to upend Bangladesh’s progress in their first Champions Trophy campaign since 2006.So far, however, New Zealand haven’t had a great tournament themselves. They were unlucky against Australia, with rain forcing them to share the points. Williamson struck 100 but their much-vaunted allrounders couldn’t quite turn a strong start into a flying finish as they were bowled out for 291 with an over of their allocation to spare.Against England too, Williamson’s 87 had put them on course to chase down a stiff target of 311 in Cardiff, but James Neesham, Corey Anderson and Mitchell Santner mustered 31 runs between them. New Zealand banks on the push from these allrounders in the last 10 to 15 overs of their innings, in addition to their bowling skills.Bangladesh will have to stop this trio, and Colin de Grandhomme too if he is picked, to have any footing in the game. But that’s after they’ve accounted for Martin Guptill, Luke Ronchi and Williamson at the top of the order. Williamson, of course, has two big scores to his name, though the dangerous Guptill has twice made strong starts without yet going big.Bangladesh will also have to bat well as a collective to beat New Zealand, and not leave it all for Tamim Iqbal to do. The left-handed opener has been Bangladesh’s version of Williamson so far in the tournament – making 128 and 95 – while the rest (apart from Mushfiqur Rahim against England) have been sub-par. It is therefore time for the likes of Soumya Sarkar, Imrul Kayes, Shakib Al Hasan and Sabbir Rahman to make significant contributions. Both teams may also have to put up with the threat of rain in this game, although New Zealand have more to fear on this front. A wash-out would confirm their elimination, whereas Bangladesh could still qualify on net run-rate if England beat Australia by a greater margin than they managed against Bangladesh in the tournament opener at The Oval.Strangely, it sounds like New Zealand have nothing to lose – a role in which Bangladesh have excelled in recent years.Form guideNew Zealand LLWWW (last five completed matches, most recent first) Bangladesh LWWLLKane Williamson’s form has been one of the highlights of New Zealand’s campaign•Getty Images
In the spotlight Corey Anderson hasn’t been hitting his stride since the 2015 World Cup. He has made just 191 runs at 14.69 during this period, with a top score of 35. But this is the sort of occasion that Anderson should excel in, given how highly he is rated as a ball-striking allrounder.Mustafizur Rahman has had a quiet tournament so far, with the pitches not really conducive to his cutters. Essentially, the ball isn’t gripping as he would like it to, a problem that spinners often face on smooth surfaces.Team newsNew Zealand could look at Colin de Grandhomme as an option in the lower middle-order. Tom Latham also awaits a chance, especially having done well against Bangladesh recently, but even though Neil Broom has struggled it seems unlikely they will make a change to the batting.New Zealand (probable) 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Luke Ronchi (wk), 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Neil Broom, 6 James Neesham, 7 Corey Anderson, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Adam Milne, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Trent BoultBangladesh could look at streamlining their batting line-up by asking Imrul Kayes to open with Tamim Iqbal and bringing in Mosaddek Hossain in the lower middle-order. But they might just stick to the same XI that played against Australia to give that line-up another chance to redeem itself.Bangladesh (probable) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Imrul Kayes, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Shakib Al Hasan, 7 Mosaddek Hossain, 8 Mehedi Hasan, 9 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 10 Rubel Hossain, 11 Mustafizur RahmanPitch and conditionsRain is forecast in Cardiff early on Friday, but it is likely to drift away after 11am. Both teams may look to bat first despite the rain threats; the last four ODIs here have featured teams topping 300 runs, but only once have those targets been chased successfully, by Pakistan last year. This match will be played on a fresh pitch with a decent covering of grass so all eyes will be on whether it misbehaves at all later in the game.Stats and triviaIn Bangladesh’s only previous ODI in Cardiff, they famously beat Australia in 2005. New Zealand meanwhile have won three out of five games at this ground.Neil Broom has been a thorn in Bangladesh’s side in their last five ODIs against New Zealand, scoring 339 runs at an average of 84.75.Tamim Iqbal needs to score 16 runs to topple Mohammad Ashraful as Bangladesh’s leading run-scorer in England. Ashraful’s 300 runs came in 10 ODIs – including a century here in 2005 – while Tamim has made 285 in just five games.Quotes “I think there was some big positives to take out of the performance against England. We took wickets through the whole innings and kept them to definitely a score that was chase-able.” Trent Boult“The way we are playing the last two, three years, there’s a lot of matches we have won and also a few matches we should have won but couldn’t. We know if we can create chances we have to grab them and play hard.”
Newcastle United's interest in Monaco centre-back Axel Disasi is "serious" in the summer transfer window, according to an update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Do Newcastle want to sign Axel Disasi?
The Magpies are eyeing up a new defensive addition between now and the beginning of the new Premier League season, and Disasi has emerged as arguably their main target in that area of the pitch.
The 25-year-old has been a rock at the heart of Monaco's back-line for a sustained period now, making 129 appearances in total, not to mention scoring 12 goals and registering four assists as an added bonus. He has also won four caps for France, holding his own in a squad full of world-class talent, whether it be Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann or Raphael Varane, to name just a few of the superstars on show.
Disasi's current Monaco deal runs out in the summer of 2025, which does put the Ligue 1 side in something of a tricky position, in terms of deciding whether to sell him for a lot of money now, or risk losing him for a cheaper amount further down the line when his contract is nearing its expiration date.
Axel Disasi Newcastle target
What's the latest on Disasi to Newcastle?
Speaking to Give Me Sport, Romano claimed that Disasi remains a strong candidate to head to St James' Park this summer, having had discussions with him over a move in recent times:
"The interest is serious and they had conversations on the player's side. It is not something that is advanced yet, on the club side."
This is another indication that Disasi remains firmly on Newcastle's radar in the summer window, and he really could be exactly what they're looking for prior to the 2023/24 campaign getting off and running, coming in as Sven Botman's centre-back partner for the foreseeable future.
The Frenchman, who has been labelled as a "hidden gem", is a fantastic defender who averaged 2.6 and 2.3 aerial duel wins in Ligue 1 and the Europa League last season, as well as eye-catching 3.3 interceptions per match in the former, and 2.9 clearances in the latter. His aforementioned international experience for France also highlights what a top-level player he is, at a time when Les Bleus also have the likes of Ibrahima Konate and William Saliba to call upon at the back, as well as Varane.
At this point, it just feels like a case of Newcastle agreeing a fee for Disasi, and both clubs coming to an agreement that suits all parties, and a move to the Magpies should appeal to him, considering the massive progress they are making under Eddie Howe, finishing fourth in the Premier League,
Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has praised him the past, lauding his "pace, tackling, heading, athleticism, tenacity, timing", as well as a "complete and dominant" central defender, which perfectly sums up what an all-round force he already is, not to mention still having so many years ahead of him to further improve, potentially coming in as the strong upgrade on Fabian Schar, who remains an important squad player.

West Ham have shown interest in making a move for Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah this summer.
How much is Trevoh Chalobah worth?
According to the Guardian, David Moyes is in the market for a new centre-back and has shortlisted Chalobah as a possible option.
The 24-year-old is also being targeted by Internazionale, and faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge.
It was previously reported the Chelsea hierarchy was open to selling Chalobah, who is now behind teammates Thiago Silva, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, and Levi Colwill in the pecking order.
New manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to head into the season with four centre-backs in the squad, but this plan has been thrown into question due to Fofana’s long-term injury.
With Badiashile also to miss the start of the season through injury, the Argentine doesn’t want his defensive options further depleted.
Nevertheless, Chalobah remains a target for the Hammers, and he could be available for around £25m.
The £50k-per-week gem could be swayed by a move to the London Stadium as he will be eyeing an England debut ahead of the Euro 2024 tournament next summer.
West Ham also have Harry Maguire and Taylor Harwood-Bellis on their radar this summer, according to the same report.
Who can Chalobah replace at West Ham?
The 6 foot 4 titan has been at Chelsea since 2007 and is one of the very few academy prospects to make a notable breakthrough into the first team.
His career in West London began in emphatic fashion when he netted on his Premier League debut in a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace on the opening day of the season.
Trevoh-Chalobah-Chelsea
In total, he has made 63 appearances across all competitions for the Blues, and although he isn’t a regular starter, he has emerged as a dependable squad option.
Last campaign, Chalobah was Chelsea’s second most-used defender (only behind Silva) and occasionally deputised at right-back for the injured Reece James. On that evidence, he'd provide David Moyes with plenty of versatility, something that could be key as the Irons embark on another voyage in Europe this season.
Former manager Graham Potter is one notable fan of the Englishman’s composure and positional awareness, saying: “I’ve been very impressed from day one. He’s trained really well, very professional, very determined. He’s an impressive character, very focused on his football. He’s a bit of a soldier.”
From a West Ham perspective, someone of this durability and versatility would be the perfect long-term replacement for Angelo Ogbonna.
The Italian is in the twilight years of his career and looks set to struggle with another year of domestic and European football.
West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna
The 35-year-old only started 13 Premier League matches last season and Moyes opted for alternative defenders in the crucial, latter stages of the club’s Europa Conference League triumph.
Chalobah can be deemed a certified upgrade due to his superiority in a number of metrics. Defensively, the Chelsea star outranks Ogbonna for tackles per 90 (1.71 vs 0.8), interceptions per 90 (1.28 vs 1.24), and blocks per 90 (0.92 vs 0.8).
Moreover, the former Ipswich loanee is also far more accomplished on the ball, comfortably trumping the veteran for pass completion per 90 (88.1% vs 80%), progressive passes per 90 (3.65 vs 0.8), and progressive carries per 90 (1.01 vs 0.00).
Judging by these statistics and his profile, If West Ham can persuade the Chelsea owners to sanction Chalobah’s departure, it would be an extremely shrewd piece of business.
Struggling against the short ball, Afghanistan slumped to 135 all out, but Rashid Khan ensured West Indies’ chase would be far from straightforward
The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy11-Jun-2017 Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsGulbadin Naib scored 51 and took two wickets•AFP
Stung by their 63-run defeat in the first ODI, West Indies hit back via their fast bowlers, who exposed Afghanistan’s frailties against the short ball as they slid to 135 all out. West Indies’ batting, though, isn’t without frailties of its own, and Rashid Khan, responsible for bowling them out for 149 on Friday, caused yet another serious wobble with his zippy, stump-to-stump legbreaks and googlies. Afghanistan’s total, though, proved a fair way short of matchwinning as Shai Hope held a shaky chase together and steered West Indies to a series-levelling four-wicket win.Afghanistan could perhaps have pushed West Indies even closer with more aggressive tactics. Asghar Stanikzai, their captain, only brought Rashid on in the seventh over, by which time Evin Lewis and Kieran Powell had already knocked 37 off the target.Rashid struck in his first over, getting Powell to nick a googly to slip, and went around the wicket in his third over to trap Lewis lbw with another perfectly pitched wrong ‘un. This was high-quality bowling, and West Indies’ batsmen, unsure of which way the ball would turn, were stabbing nervously at him with leaden feet. Stanikzai, though, took Rashid off the attack after only a five-over spell.Gulbadin Naib, who had already made a sizeable contribution by scoring his third ODI fifty, then brought Afghanistan more cheer with his medium-pace, dismissing Jonathan Carter – who showed poor judgment while cutting – and Jason Mohammed – who failed to keep a cut down – in his first three overs. With West Indies four down, Stanikzai brought Rashid back after only two overs from Amir Hamza. Hope and Roston Chase played out the legspinner’s sixth and seventh overs, but he struck again with the last ball of his eighth, flighting it wide of off stump and inviting the drive. Dip deceived Chase into reaching for the ball, turn made him miss it, and all of that unbalanced him enough to drag him out of his crease. Afsar Zazai’s lightning hands did the rest behind the stumps.By then, though, West Indies only needed 38, and only needed one reasonable partnership. Hope and Rovman Powell provided that, and Jason Holder applied the necessary touch of urgency at the finish.Apart from Naib’s 51, there was little to cheer for Afghanistan when they batted, and their batsmen played no role in West Indies’ only real moments of concern, with Shannon Gabriel and Alzarri Joseph spending brief spells off the field nursing injuries. Gabriel walked off four legal balls into his sixth over, clutching his left side, while Joseph hurt his ankle while stumbling over the advertising hoardings in a failed attempt to flick a hook from Rashid back into play.Having chosen to bat once again, Afghanistan made a cautious start – Noor Ali Zadran shouldered arms to every ball of the sixth over, bowled by Holder – and moved to 21 for 0 in seven overs before the short ball found its first victim. Holder got one to lift towards Noor’s helmet, and the batsman, fending awkwardly, popped back a return catch.A mix-up at the end of the same over, which left Ahmadi and Rahmat Shah stranded at the same end, was quickly followed by Rahmat top-edging a hook off Gabriel to the fielder at long leg. Afghanistan had lost three wickets in 11 balls. Gabriel struck again in his next over, this time with a fuller length, the umpire ruling Samiullah Shenwari out lbw even though the ball seemed to be slanting down the leg side.West Indies introduced Alzarri Joseph in the 13th over, and he immediately set about peppering Stanikzai and Nabi with bouncers. Neither survived the test. Stanikzai was unlucky to receive the ball of the innings, angled in wickedly and rising head-high while giving him no time to react.Naib, expecting another short ball first up, ducked at what turned out to be a good-length delivery outside off. Exceedingly nervy at the start of his innings, he calmed down as Joseph, bowling a six-over spell, lost some of his sting, and West Indies called upon the offspin of Ashley Nurse and the gentle medium-pace of Rovman Powell.Naib grew comfortable enough to launch a rare full ball from Joseph over the long-on boundary, but that aside, runs came in a trickle. Zazai crawled to 9 off 33 before stepping out and nicking Roston Chase to slip. Then Rashid, having top-edged a hook over deep backward square leg, fell trying a similar shot next ball, only managing a nick to the keeper.Naib, looking to farm the strike, began finding the straight boundary with greater frequency, but couldn’t keep the tail away from the strike entirely. Dawlat Zadran slogged Nurse to deep midwicket, and a couple of overs later Naib, having just reached his fifty, gave Nurse his second wicket, holing out to long-off.
Ottis Gibson is expected to be named South Africa’s new coach within days, with the ECB now seeing his departure as inevitable
George Dobell11-Aug-20170:58
Paul Farbrace, England’s assistant coach, addressed the prospect of Gibson’s departure during the Old Trafford Test
Ottis Gibson is expected to be named South Africa’s new coach within days. While Gibson is currently employed as the England bowling coach and is expected to report to Birmingham on Monday for training ahead of the first Investec Test against West Indies, it is understood the ECB now sees his departure as inevitable and expects a deal to be finalised imminently.Although England will hope Gibson is able to remain with them until the end of the Test series against West Indies – which could lastuntil September 11 – they are aware that South Africa’s next Test series (against Bangladesh) starts on September 28. South Africa will want him present at a training camp that precedes that series.Faf du Plessis, South Africa’s captain, confirmed earlier in the week that Gibson was the first choice of the panel charged with picking a new coach. That decision now has to be ratified by Cricket South Africa. That only leaves CSA and the ECB to agree a compensation figure. While Gibson has a year of his England contract remaining, it is understood he has confirmed to the ECB that he wants to take the position with South Africa. It is not anticipated that the compensation discussion will delay his appointment. That means that the Edgbaston Test could well be his last with England.Richard Johnson, the former England seamer who currently performs the role of bowling coach with Middlesex, is a leading candidate to replace Gibson, though James Anderson could help out as a player-coach in the interim.Another intriguing possibility is the addition of Darren Gough to the coaching staff in some capacity. While Gough is not thought to be interested in a full-time role, he has emerged as a possible candidate as a bowling coach or consultant of the white-ball sides. He is Level 3 qualified and recently made a good impression working with the England U-19s. He is understood to be open to an approach. It is also understood that discussions continue with Saqlain Mushtaq. While he is currently contracted to spend 100 days a year with England, there is a good chance that role will be extended.

Tottenham Hotspur could be set to bolster their squad further, constructing a side not only ready to challenge once again, but perhaps even tempt their key man to stay.
Is Douglas Luiz leaving Aston Villa?
The bulk of the summer window has been dominated by Harry Kane's future, which remains uncertain as Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain continue to circle.
Meanwhile, new manager Ange Postecoglou has been frank in his assessment, suggesting that whilst it remains ongoing, things around the club feel almost uneasy.
This potential exit of their star striker has been born largely from their failure to compete for the elite honours, but also due to last year's disaster of a campaign.
Whilst he alone thrived, his teammates largely disappointed him. As such, the wholesale changes already being implemented will likely encourage his potential stay.
Especially if they add Douglas Luiz to the squad, who has been linked with an Aston Villa exit, as the two north London clubs show interest, via The Sun.
Despite signing a new contract back in October, FootballTransfers still only value the Brazilian general at €39.8m (£34m), suggesting a coup could be in order.
How many goals does Harry Kane have?
Despite the misery endured during their most recent season, in which three managers came and went from the dugout, Kane offered a sole shining light amidst the darkness.
Somehow, the 30-year-old marksman notched 30 goals in the Premier League, assisting a further three. His fine performances perhaps went under the radar due to the imperious debut term that Erling Haaland enjoyed for Manchester City.
Whilst he was questioned for a period, in the end, the 23-year-old broke numerous records, including the Premier League's for goals scored in both a 38 and 42-game season. His 52 strikes across all competitions helped his side claim a famous treble, cementing them as one of the greatest sides in footballing history.
Despite starring for a side overawed with quality, in the league, the Norway international did only score six more goals than Kane, who featured in one of Spurs' worst campaigns in recent history. There is hardly a huge gulf between the two, despite all the hype surrounding the youngster.
harry-kane-1
Should Postecoglou bolster their squad even minutely, it could have a huge effect on the potential tally the splendid striker could accumulate next term.
After all, Luiz would offer an additional attacking impetus from deep, with which he could both feed the forward or even finish off the chances created by him.
Starring for a Villa side reignited by Unai Emery's appointment, the 25-year-old machine featured 37 times in the league last year, maintaining a 7.10 average rating. This was a figure largely buoyed by his 86% pass accuracy, 12 goal contributions, 1.2 key passes and two tackles per game, via Sofascore.
Not to mention that his tireless work ethic would thrive under the new management, helping press from the front and forge numerous chances for his side – it was no wonder he was branded an "enforcer" by journalist Ashley Preece.
With Haaland supported by the likes of Phil Foden, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva in the midfield, Kane could soon be set to benefit from a similar treatment, as the former Citizens midfielder would join James Maddison as creators for the lethal star.
Soon, as he seeks to finally shatter that all-time Premier League scoring record, having scored 213 already in the league and 307 across his career, there is precedent to believe that a revitalised Spurs squad with the offensive impetus provided by the Villa star would help Kane surpass the record-breaking 'Striking Viking'.
