Newcastle Interested In £78m-Rated Summer Deal

Newcastle United are showing an interest potentially making a move for the Barcelona winger Raphinha this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Could Newcastle sign Raphinha?

The Tyneside club have enjoyed a real breakthrough season which currently has them sitting pretty up in third spot of the Premier League table.

Champions League is in touching distance with just four games remaining for Eddie Howe's side, but they will be looking to avoid any slip-ups with the likes of Liverpool breathing down their necks in fifth.

The prospect of playing on the elite European stage would not only see some of the biggest clubs in the world visit St James' Park, it would also free up more money for Newcastle to spend.

Indeed, as per the Financial Fair Play regulations, having a bigger revenue stream allows clubs to spend more and, therefore, this could boost their ability in the transfer market.

And they may need more room to spend if they are to pursue a player like Raphinha over the coming months given it was only last summer when he made that huge move to the Nou Camp.

Leeds United were able to rake in around £55m last year which has the potential to rise through add-ons.

But his time in Spain could be coming to an end, speaking on his Here We Go podcast, Romano has claimed the Toon are one of the sides who are interested in the Brazilian:

(32:00) "With Raphinha, it's not easy for Barcelona, because Raphinha is doing well. I think this was a positive season for Raphinha. Maybe not a fantastic season. But the positive season.

"From what I know, Xavi's very happy with him. So it's not easy for Barca to say: 'Okay, let's put Raphinha on the market'.

"But they could be open to letting him go in case they can bring [Lionel] Messi back because, with Raphinha, you can maybe make €80m/€85m/€90m (£69m-£78m) – Chelsea interest, Newcastle interest."

Do Newcastle need Raphinha?

The £208k-per-week star typically plays off the right wing as he cuts inside on his wicked left foot and this is a position which could possibly be up for grabs over the summer.

Indeed, casting your mind back just a few months ago, the spot on the right was all but tied up by Miguel Almiron.

The Paraguayan enjoyed a stunning start to the 2022/23 campaign which saw him find the back of the net nine times in the league alone as of Boxing Day (via Transfermarkt).

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe withMiguelAlmiron

However, his form has fallen off a cliff since then – granted he has struggled with injuries – having scored just twice in the league since the turn of the year.

Jacob Murphy has filled in for the 29-year-old and has done a solid job with three goals in his last four outings in the Premier League (via Transfermarkt).

These are both players without experience in the Champions League and whether they are good enough to play at that level will remain in doubt.

However, Raphinha has gained European experience with Barca and has been able to offer four goal contributions across the Champions League and Europa League this season (via Transfermarkt).

Seb Stafford-Bloor has hailed the Brazilian as "magic" and perhaps this is the standard of player Newcastle should be looking at to bolster their side ahead of what will surely be a huge 2023/24 campaign.

Tottenham: Elite Manager Could Get Spurs Job Over Slot

Luis Enrique has "not been officially ruled out of the running" to become Tottenham's next manager despite their heavy links to Feyenoord's Arne Slot.

Who could Spurs appoint as their next manager?

Spurs and chairman Daniel Levy are believed to be stepping up the hunt for Antonio Conte's permanent replacement, with the Italian departing north London over two months ago.

The Premier League side have shortlisted a number of candidates for the role with reports in the last fortnight indicating Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim, Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou, Slot and Enrique are firmly in the running.

Former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann could also apparently come back into the fold depending on developments, but recent claims also suggest that Slot is now the favourite to take over.

The Dutchman is apparently in pole position to succeed Conte at N17, coming after he sealed his first ever Eredivisie title with Feyenoord this season.

Slot's stock is high at the moment and he has been revered by members of the media, like journalist Marcel van der Kraan (via talkSPORT), for his "ultra-attacking" style of play.

However, while the 44-year-old appears to be a leading contender as things stand, alternative names are still in the frame as well.

Luis Enrique

This is where Enrique comes in, with a report from 90min sharing some news on the Champions League-winning tactician.

According to their information, the former Spain boss has "not been officially ruled out of the running" to become Tottenham's next manager, meaning he could still get the job over Slot.

Enrique is described by the report as a "high-profile" option for the role and he could potentially come as both an exciting alternative to Slot – especially when factoring in his attacking style of play.

Who is Luis Enrique?

The 53-year-old has won nine major honours in total, including a European Cup and two La Liga titles at Barcelona, making him a prestigious option.

Enrique's achievements arguably make him stand out as one of the more decorated managerial free agents who are readily-available for hire – a notion which surely won't be lost on Levy.

The former Celta Vigo manager favours a 4-3-3 attacking formation with Man City boss Pep Guardiola also holding Enrique in very high esteem.

Speaking back in 2017 when his counterpart announced he was leaving Barca, Guardiola heralded Enrique's "unbelievable" brand of football and explained how the La Liga giants would undoubtedly miss him.

"We are going to miss the perfect trainer for Barcelona," said the Blues boss (via The Independent)"His personality, his character. He has had two or three years and played some unbelievable football with unbelievable players."As an FC Barcelona fan, it is sad because there are few managers in the world better than Luis Enrique."

Guardiola also called Enrique a "master" tactician, coming as really high praise from one of the most successful managers in world football.

Anderson on course for second Test

England expect James Anderson to be fit for selection for the second Test in Manchester

George Dobell at Lord's13-Jul-2016England expect James Anderson to be fit for selection for the second Test in Manchester.Alastair Cook, the England captain, admitted there had been a temptation to play Anderson in the Lord’s Test, but ultimately it was decided, on the advice of the medical team, not to hurry his recovery from a fracture in his right shoulder.Anderson, the world’s No. 1 rated Test bowler and the leading wicket-taker in England’s Test history, bowled in the nets at Lord’s on Tuesday and Wednesday and expressed confidence in his own ability to play. But the selectors decided that it was better not to risk him on a Lord’s surface that often offers little to bowlers and could demand some long spells.”He was fairly confident,” Cook said. “Of course there is always a temptation to take that gamble with a bowler who has taken 450 Test wickets.”He’s not quite at full pace and there is a risk of going into a five-day Test match with that injury – an injury that not many people have had – so the selectors have decided it’s too much of a risk to go for it. They’re concerned that if he has one of those stints at Lord’s, the sun’s out and it’s a flat wicket, he could be bowling 30-odd overs in an innings and we’re not quite sure how his shoulder will stand up to that.”The medical people are asked their opinion and I imagine they will err on the safety side. If they make the other call and it blows up, there are repercussions. When you are responsible for making decisions on players’ welfare, it must be really tough. You do not want to be responsible for it.”There are other games. He should be fit for Old Trafford. He does understand the situation.”While Anderson’s absence is clearly a setback, it does offer the chance of freshening the England attack for the second of these back-to-back Tests. There are only three days between the games, both of which are expected to be played on good batting tracks, so Anderson might be used to boost a jaded seam quartet.Ben Stokes is also close to full fitness and should also be available for selection for the second Test. Stokes, who underwent surgery on his knee in May, has been cleared to play a full part with bat and ball in the Championship match against Lancashire starting on Saturday, while Mark Wood, who has had two bouts of surgery on his ankle, will play for the Lions in the tri-series also involving Sri Lanka A and Pakistan A that starts on Monday. It is possible, though unlikely, that Anderson could feature in the same Championship match as Stokes, as England are reluctant to allow him to play a full part in a match that ends a day later than the first Test. He is more likely to continue his rehabilitation in the nets and away from the cameras.”Ben needed another week or so in terms of being confident of his knee when bowling and batting,” Cook explained. “He didn’t feel that confident on his knee yet and you get that from playing. He’s had an operation on it so it was quite a major thing. It was discussed [whether to pick him as a specialist batsman] in the selection meeting but we decided not to go that way. He plays a four-day game for Durham and will bowl.”Shivil Kaushik, the Gujarat Lions left-arm spinner with an action reminiscent of Paul Adams, was also among the net bowlers, but Arjun Tendulkar, the son of Sachin who has become a regular at such sessions in the last few years, was reduced to the role of spectator. He has sustained a significant back injury and has been told not to bowl for at least six months.

Chelsea: £30m Star With ‘Crazy Potential’ Could Join Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are one of the clubs in the race for Athletico Parananse striker Vitor Roque.

What’s the latest on Vitor Roque to Chelsea?

According to reports from Spain, the Blues are set to rival Arsenal, Newcastle, Paris Saint-Germain, and Barcelona for the 18-year-old.

This report also details that the Catalan giants perhaps lead the way as the player 'dreams' of a move to Spain, but the deal is complicated by the scrutiny surrounding their finances so may be unable to afford the transfer.

Therefore, the aforementioned teams are all putting pressure on the Blaugrana to make their move, whilst they're waiting in the wings to pounce on this extraordinary talent.

In order to secure the frontman’s future, it is understood that a fee of €35m (£30m) will meet his club’s valuation.

Who could Vitor Roque replace at Chelsea?

Roque represents a young, hungry, and dynamic striker, brimming with limitless potential. This description couldn’t be further from the current state of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s demeanour at Stamford Bridge.

The 33-year-old joined the West London outfit in the summer of 2022, but the transfer has materialised into a complete disaster, as he has been painfully ineffective.

The former Arsenal man has started just five Premier League games and has only found the net on three occasions in all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

It was the definition of a panic buy that lacked any form of planning and drastically backfired.

The Gabonese’s inability to adequately perform has left Chelsea to endlessly experiment with various front lines that have often involved a ‘false nine’ – but has also failed to pay any dividends as the club has only scored 36 goals in as many games to underline a serious lack of potency in front of goal.

pierre-emerick-aubameyang-chelsea-premier-league

Meanwhile, with the impending arrival of Mauricio Pochettino, a new era is about to begin, which will most likely usher Aubameyang out the door.

The signing of the 70-cap international contradicted the ownership’s view to accumulate the "best young players."

But, this could come in the form of Roque, who registered 12 goal contributions in 19 appearances in his native Brazil. Former Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari described him as “one of the greatest players we have ahead of us," suggesting he'd be certainly suit the club's new philosophy.

As a result of an impressive string of performances, the former Cruzeiro star made his Selecao debut in March 2023 to demonstrate the "crazy potential" he possesses, as per scout Jacek Kulig.

Pochettino is likely to be awarded vast resources to transform the fortunes of a club that has plummeted into midtable mediocrity and signing a star of this calibre would be an intelligent step for his future.

Selection rethink needed – Smith

Australia’s captain Steven Smith has conceded a radical shift in Test selection may be required in order to change the national side’s increasingly grim record in Asia, after their 229-run defeat in Galle

Despite a strong run of form last season, Usman Khawaja has looked out of depth on the turning tracks in Sri Lanka•AFP

Australia’s captain Steven Smith has conceded a radical shift in Test selection may be required in order to change the national side’s increasingly grim record in Asia, after he presided over a series-ending thrashing at the hands of Sri Lanka in Galle. It was Australia’s eighth consecutive loss in the region, following series clean sweeps by India and Pakistan in 2013 and 2014.The top six chosen for Pallekele and Galle was the same as that used through last summer in Australia and New Zealand, but Smith admitted it may now be time to think in terms of the players best-equipped to deal with spin bowling on helpful pitches, rather than the diet of pace on which most of his batting colleagues have been raised. Joe Burns and Usman Khawaja in particular have looked out of their depth despite strong returns last season, each innings looking more fraught than the last.Touring players will have the option of returning to Galle for training on what should have been the fourth day of the Test. The centre pitch on which the batsmen were so confused has been left unwatered in order to be used for additional practice. However Smith agreed that the composition of the team needed to be examined in view of the results collected here.”Yeah it certainly needs to be looked at,” Smith said following the 229-run defeat that handed Sri Lanka the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy for the first time since it was struck. “If there are guys that can play spin well in these conditions then it’s certainly got to be a chance. It’s been too long now – I think it’s been 15 or 16 [10] games since we’ve won a game in the subcontinent, so whatever we’re doing it’s not working. So yeah there might be a need for some changes.”Australia have chosen batsmen for subcontinent conditions in the past, the current coach and selector Darren Lehmann among them. He made his debut in India in 1998 then later played a useful role in series wins in Pakistan and India, while often being left out at home as others were thought to be more proficient against pace. Smith was himself a batsman picked for the conditions expected in India three years ago, a tour for which the selectors were believed to have also considered David Hussey before hesitating. The Australia A captain Peter Handscomb has been suggested as a player with the potential to perform more ably against spin than others, while the selection of specialist opening batsmen like Burns may also come into question. Shaun Marsh and Moises Henriques are the reserve batsmen on tour, and both should come into contention for the third Test in Colombo next week.”The guys are a bit down at the moment and fair enough too, it’s been a tough series so far, we have been outplayed in both Test matches, the mood’s not great at the moment. We are a bit disappointed, but we’ve still got plenty to play for in Colombo,” Smith said. “We have got to try and prove to ourselves and the public that we can play in these conditions.”I thought the first innings was very disappointing, I thought today we were a little bit more proactive, we saw some sweep shots, some reverse sweeps, the guys using their feet and to get around 180 I thought probably around 200 in the last innings of this game or every innings of this match was probably around par. So we saw a little bit of proactive thinking and innovative thinking today to find a way, we just haven’t been able to do it for long periods of time though.”They have got some quality bowlers in their team that get the ball to spin and then skid sharply as well. I guess when the ball does spin sharply it sort of plays on your mind that you might just play outside of one. We haven’t been good enough with it and we have to find ways to just cover that ball that doesn’t spin. The majority of the time if it spins it spins too far, we have to forget about the ball before essentially and if it comes and does spin, hopefully it spins past the stumps and the outside edge.”Smith also addressed the disparity in the performances of Australia’s spinners Nathan Lyon and Jon Holland against their Sri Lankan counterparts Rangana Herath, Dilruwan Perera and Lakshan Sandakan. “They didn’t get many wickets did they?” Smith said of Lyon and Holland. “We need to find ways to bowl differently to how we bowl our spin in Australia as well. You look at the Sri Lankan spinners, any of the subcontinent spinners, they bowl that side seam on the ball where they can go up and down with their speeds and trajectory. The ball reacts differently. One ball goes straight on and speeds up off the wicket, one ball spins and you don’t know which one is which.”I don’t think the bowlers actually know which one is which either. In Australia traditionally, we get taught to get over the top of the ball and in Australia I think you need to get that shape to try and do the batsman in drift and shape in the air. Whereas, I think it’s the exact opposite playing in the subcontinent. The ones with the side seam are extremely hard to face and our spin bowlers need to continue working on that. It’s bowling a completely different way to the way we bowl in Australia.”I thought all of the fast bowlers did a pretty good job for us in this game, but to be fair, it shouldn’t be them taking the wickets. It should be our spinners that are getting the job done. For Jon Holland in his first Test, he was obviously a little bit nervous and you can excuse that a little bit. The spinners have to find a way to get wickets and keep the runs dry on these surfaces. We’ve gone at over four an over for both Test matches, so we’ve got to find a way for the spinners to get wickets in these conditions.”

Burnley: ‘Tremendous’ Star Could Be Next Tella At Turf Moor

Burnley are going to need some attacking reinforcements if they are going to translate their success in the Championship into strong performances in the Premier League.

Vincent Kompany's side look like a strong outfit following their title win but have already lost key attacking outlets, Ashley Barnes and Nathan Tella, with it unclear at this stage if the Clarets' top scorer will return to Turf Moor after his superb loan spell from Southampton.

However, if a deal cannot be agreed with the Saints, who may well be keen to keep Tella given their own relegation to the Championship, then Kompany could find a new version of the 23-year-old in Liverpool's attacking talent, Fabio Carvalho.

Could Burnley sign Carvalho?

According to Football Insider, Burnley are open to both a loan or permanent move for the Portuguese youngster this summer after a frustrating debut season at Anfield, which has seen him muster just 340 minutes of action in the Premier League.

He did register three goals in 22 total appearances for Jurgen Klopp's side but given the array of attacking talent available at Anfield, it was perhaps always going to be difficult for him to earn a regular starting spot.

However, he has already shown his class in the Championship with Fulham, notching ten goals and eight assists as they won the title under Marco Silva in 2021/22, which suggests that he needs regular football in order to achieve his potential.

Klopp has already hinted that the Portugal U21 international, who earns £40k-per-week, could depart on loan this summer, saying:

“I think there is a possibility Fabio could go on loan, but we will see. This was not the best year of his career, his young career,” he said.

“No player has impressed me more than Fabio, that’s the truth. This very talented boy came here with big dreams and big expectations and it didn’t work out. His work ethic will give him a fantastic career."

Could Carvalho be Burnley's next Tella?

Carvalho has already proven himself to be a top Championship player and while he didn't get as much game time as he would have liked at Anfield, a year learning from Klopp will only have helped him grow as a player.

Burnley forward Nathan Tella.

While Burnley would prefer not to be dependent on loan players, the success of Tella shows that Kompany can benefit greatly from the loan market, and Carvalho's goalscoring knack could help to keep the Clarets in the Premier League next season.

Liverpool journalist Paul Machin waxed lyrical about the young attacking midfielder in a recent interview with Football FanCast.

He said: "He's small, he's technical, he's actually quite quick. I think he's a tremendous little player. He's got a great eye for goal, he's got an uncanny knack to arrive in the right place at the right time, in terms of scoring goals."

A nimble forward with goals and assists in his locker, the similarities to Tella are clear, with the Saints loanee also emphasising his ability in front of goal with 17 in the second tier last season.

Therefore, if Burnley can help Carvalho to rediscover his best form at Turf Moor, then Kompany could have another gem on his hands.

Mathews to miss rest of tour due to calf tear

Angelo Mathews’ calf tear has ruled him out of the remainder of Australia’s tour, while allrounder Thisara Perera and left-arm wrist spinner Lakshan Sandakan have been released from the squad for the fifth ODI

Angelo Mathews’ calf tear has ruled him out of the remainder of Australia’s tour, while allrounder Thisara Perera and left-arm wrist spinner Lakshan Sandakan have been released from the Sri Lanka squad for the fifth ODI. In place of these three players, Sri Lanka have drafted in batsmen Upul Tharanga and Niroshan Dickwella, as well as seam-bowling allrounder Dasun Shanaka.Mathews has not undergone a CT scan for the injury he sustained during the fourth ODI, but the team management has already confirmed he will be unavailable for the remaining ODI and two T20Is. Mathews had hobbled off the field during his innings on Wednesday and, though he returned to bat towards the end of the innings, had been substantially hampered by the injury.Perera had played all four ODIs as the primary seamer but, although he claimed 3 for 33 in Sri Lanka’s sole win, at Khettarama, he has since been less effective. Perera had also been dropped for the England tour, following a long stretch of modest returns. He is effectively being replaced by Shanaka, who had some success in that tour of England and Ireland – he claimed three wickets in the first innings of Test at Headingley, and also took a five-wicket haul in an ODI against Ireland, in Dublin.Tharanga had also been somewhat effective in England, making a 53 not out and 40 from the lower middle order. Following Dilshan’s retirement, the selectors may wish to bat him at the top of the order again, though Dickwella is also a candidate for the opening spot. In his last three List A innings, against England Lions and Pakistan A, Dickwella hit 51, 44, and 60.Sri Lanka have already lost the ODI series. The final match is set to be played in Pallekele, on Sunday.
