Aston Villa suffer Calvin Bassey blow

Aston Villa could be priced out of a move for Rangers’ Calvin Bassey amid increased transfer interest in the 22-year-old.

What’s the word?

That’s according to Ryan Taylor, who took to Twitter on Saturday morning to update Villa supporters on Bassey’s future.

The Daily Express reporter outlined: “Rangers keen to encourage an auction for Calvin Bassey. Ajax, who view Nigerian as Lisandro Martínez replacement, currently highest bidders. Brighton have also made an offer. Asking price: £25m but with race hotting up, any sale could surpass that figure.”

Villa had shown interest in the Nigeria international during May and this recent development will be a blow to Steven Gerrard, who brought him to Ibrox in 2020.

Supporters will be gutted

Bassey impressed last season for Rangers, and he showcased his talents on one of the biggest stages with a fine performance in the Europa League final, which Owen Hargreaves dubbed “astonishing” on BT Sport.

This has made things significantly harder for Gerrard, who would surely have loved a reunion with the enforcer at Villa Park.

The versatile defender, who often operated at left centre-back in a back three, or at left-back, was almost ever-present for Rangers both in the league and in their remarkable European run. He featured 29 times in the Premiership and a further 15 times in the Europa League journey.

His league performances in particular were of a high standard, with a 6.97 average SofaScore rating. He was a stalwart for the Light Blues and combined his incredible speed with a tendency to be in the right place at the right time.

Still just 22 years old, his future is looking increasingly bright. Even back during his Leicester days, the Foxes’ under-23s coach Steve Beaglehole claimed that the Nigerian was “outstanding”.

Bassey’s underlying figures only serve to support this statement. He shows his willingness to defend on the front foot as he sits in the 94th percentile for pressures and the 99th percentile for blocks per 90 among positional peers in Europe’s major leagues and continental tournaments.

Not just a capable defender, he also ranked in the 95th percentile for assists per 90, and the 99th percentile for dribbles completed. He can seemingly do it all, and it would represent a huge blow for Villa to lose out on this high-quality player.

Supporters too will be gutted to see this transfer target slip away. Everyone finally saw his qualities come to the fore in Rangers’ European adventure, and it appears that this showcase of talent has now put him beyond Gerrard’s reach.

AND in other news: Gerrard can finally axe “frustrating” Villa dud by signing “unplayable” £40m target.

Journalist drops Liverpool contract update

Liverpool have already secured and extended the contract of Mohamed Salah this summer, and it now looks like they will be making efforts to keep hold of another Anfield star imminently.

What’s the latest?

According to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs, the Reds are now prioritising a new and improved contract for Diogo Jota.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jacobs revealed: “Liverpool will also look to offer Diogo Jota improved terms as a matter of priority. Most of the other names currently being linked with Liverpool are just rumour or agent talk with little substance.”

Supporters will be delighted

There is no doubt that Liverpool supporters will be delighted to hear that Jota could be given an improved contract, especially when you consider how well the Portuguese star has done since he made the move to Merseyside in 2020.

Over 85 appearances for the Reds, Jota has scored 34 goals and delivered nine assists, with a goal contribution every 124 minutes played proving that he has become a consistent and reliable performer in the front three during his time at the club already.

The 25-year-old was the third-highest scorer in the squad last term with 21 goals and was tied as the sixth-highest scorer in the Premier League alongside Kevin de Bruyne on 15, but it’s not just his goal contributions which have made him a valuable asset to Jurgen Klopp.

Jota ranked third for the most big chances created (67) in the Premier League, only falling short to Salah and Harry Kane, while he ranked first for headed goals in the top flight.

The Liverpool forward also made 1.2 key passes and 1.1 tackles and won 4.1 duels per game over 35 league appearances, along with scoring one goal and delivering one assist in the Reds’ impressive Champions League campaign.

Klopp is a huge fan of Jota and has made his feelings clear on the player on many occasions, reserving high praise for the 25-year-old, who he hailed as “exceptional” following his brace against Southampton last season.

The German claimed of Jota (via EuroSport): “Exceptional player, exceptional boy. He has everything that a Liverpool player in this squad needs, he has the technical skills, he has the physical skills and he is very smart and can learn all the tactical stuff pretty quick.”

With that in mind, securing the Portugal international’s future at Anfield would be a major coup for FSG as they continue their pursuit for trophies and further success in the future.

Aston Villa dealt Carney Chukwuemeka blow

A big Aston Villa claim has emerged regarding Carney Chukwuemeka and his future at the club as the summer transfer window rumbles on.

What’s the talk?

Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett has revealed that the midfielder is not willing to discuss putting pen to paper on fresh terms with the Midlands club.

The 18-year-old’s current deal is due to expire next summer and Villa risk losing him for nothing if they do not act before January, when he can sign a pre-contract with foreign clubs.

Dorsett tweeted: “Carney Chukwuemeka not interested in talking contracts with #avfc currently, as he decides future. Still part of Gerrard’s plans, but 18yr old wants more guaranteed 1st team football. Dortmund interest has waned, which Carney was keen on. Plenty of others still keen.”

Steven Gerrard will be gutted

This claim from the reporter will surely leave the Villa head coach gutted, as losing Chukwuemeka would be a major blow for the club.

His contract expiring next summer is a huge concern, as it means that the current transfer window may be their last chance to rake in a significant transfer fee for his services. In January, he will be able to pen a pre-contract with teams outside of England, and he will be free to sign for any club after his contract expires at the end of June next year.

This leaves Villa in a difficult situation in the present, as they must decide whether they want to cash in on him now and use the money to reinvest in the squad, or keep him and run the risk of losing him for a tribunal fee if they are unable to convince him to stay.

Whilst losing him would not make a significant impact on the team in the immediate future, as he has only made two Premier League starts, it could be a major blow for the future.

At the age of 18, he has the scope to become a great player, as he has been able to break into the Villa first team at such a young age. He has made 14 top-flight appearances in total and recently caught the eye for England at the European Under-19 Championships, scoring three goals in four games as they won the tournament.

Therefore, Gerrard will be gutted by the prospect of him leaving in the current transfer window or next summer, as he might not be able to help the gem to fulfill his potential.

West Ham eye Everton defender Holgate

Everton could reportedly lose Mason Holgate as West Ham United have now made an enquiry over the central defender.

The Lowdown: Simms departs

As per the official website of the Goodison Park outfit, Ellis Simms has now left to join Championship side Sunderland on loan for the season, after previous temporary spells at Blackpool and Hearts.

He may not be the last departure before the window closes, as Frank Lampard looks to refine his squad ahead of the new campaign.

The Latest: Holgate enquiry

Co-writing in his latest piece for 90min, transfer expert Graeme Bailey has revealed that the Hammers have now made an enquiry over the possibility of signing Holgate.

Former Toffees manager David Moyes is thought to be keen on bringing in a player of his versatility, and so this is a deal that could accelerate over the next few weeks with the window closing on September 1.

The Verdict: Sell

With the arrival of centre-back James Tarkowski on a free transfer from Burnley, the Blues can afford to lose Holgate, and they could demand a considerable fee for him given that they would be selling him to a Premier League rival.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-7/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He ranked as low as 16th for EFC’s best performers in the top flight last term, lower than fellow centre-halves Michael Keane and Yerry Mina, while he also averaged more fouls and more times dispossessed per game than any other defender still at the club (WhoScored).

Currently earning £64,000-per-week, the Merseysiders could also do with getting his wages off of their books.

Zinchenko heir: Man City must sign Borna Sosa

Manchester City have seen some big-name players wave goodbye to the Etihad Stadium this summer, as well as seeing some big names join the club.

One player that waved goodbye to the Premier League champions after a significant and successful time at the club is Oleksandr Zinchenko.

After making 127 appearances for City across all competitions in which he scored two goals, provided 12 assists and won numerous domestic trophies, the Ukraine international followed in the footsteps of Gabriel Jesus by joining Arsenal in a deal worth £32m.

Now as the remaining days and weeks of the summer transfer window go by, this period could give City the best chance to bring in what may be their perfect replacement for the 25-year-old.

One figure that has been mentioned with a move to the Etihad that could be the dream replacement for Zinchenko is Borna Sosa.

After making 41 appearances for Dinamo Zagreb, in which he delivered six assists, the full-back moved to Stuttgart in 2018.

Since then, the 24-year-old, who is currently valued at around £10m by CIES, has scored three goals and provided 23 assists in 83 appearances for the Bundesliga club.

To further highlight his attacking prowess, the left-back ended his latest league campaign with more assists (8), shot-creating actions (103), goal-creating actions (13) and crosses (136) than any other player at Stuttgart.

In fact, only two other players in the entire Bundesliga delivered more crosses than the Croatia international.

These attributes could perfectly replace what Zinchenko offered Pep Guardiola’s side as he racked up four assists, 42 shot-creating actions, ten goal-creating actions and 28 crosses during his previous and last Premier League campaign as a City player (as per FBref). As a result, it indicates that both players provide a huge amount in the final third of the pitch.

Hailed by Pellegrino Matarazzo as a player that has “huge potential” as well as having a “weapon” of a left foot according to Stuttgart sporting director Sven Mislintat, Sosa would definitely be a useful addition to City’s squad, helping them to forget about potentially being weakened as a result of the Ukrainian’s departure.

With the Manchester club rather light in terms of their full-back options, securing a deal for Sosa before the window closes should be the Citizens’ number one priority in terms of potential recruitment.

Man City closing in on Sergio Gomez deal

According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are ‘closing’ in on a deal to sign Anderlecht defender Sergio Gomez.

The Lowdown: Guardiola’s left-back hunt

After losing Oleksandr Zinchenko to Premier League rivals Arsenal and then missing out on Marc Cucurella, Pep Guardiola will be on the hunt for a new left-back, and it sounds like he’s identified his ideal target.

BBC Sport reported on Tuesday that the Sky Blues are in talks regarding a potential deal for 21-year-old Gomez, and after a quick development, it sounds like his transfer to the Etihad could be announced imminently.

The Latest: City set to sign Gomez

Taking to Twitter, Romano revealed that it should simply be a matter of time before Gomez is unveiled as a Man City player. He wrote:

“Excl: Manchester City are closing on Sergio Gómez deal with Anderlecht. Fee will be in excess of €10m, final details being discussed and then it will be completed.

“Plan has always been to loan him to Girona… but been told City could now decide to keep Sergi.”

The Verdict: Threat down the flank

It’s believed that City’s initial plan was to buy Gomez before sending him straight back out on loan, but to now learn that Guardiola is considering keeping hold of him suggests that he sees his star potential.

The Spaniard, dubbed the ‘heir to Iniesta’ by football journalist Ronan Murphy, had an outstanding season last term, providing an incredible 15 assists and netting seven goals in all competitions for Anderlecht, via Transfermarkt.

With this kind of form from the wing-back position, it’s no surprise that the City boss wants him to be involved with the action in and around the first team, and he would be a fantastic addition for the future of the club if they managed to secure his services.

Bruno Jordao nearing Wolves exit

Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Bruno Jordao is reportedly nearing a move away from the club, according to a report from Mais Futebol (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown: One in

The Wanderers have completed the capture of Matheus Nunes from Sporting Lisbon for a club-record fee overnight and Bruno Lage could already be looking to balance the squad out.

As a result of the incoming maestro, out of favour Jordao could be set to head in the opposite direction and return to Portugal having made just five first-team outings following his arrival from Lazio in 2019.

The 23-year-old Portugal youth international has spent time on loan at Grasshoppers and Famalicao since joining the Old Gold and could now be ready for another temporary departure…

The latest: One out

As per Mais Futebol, translated by SW, the one-cap Portugal Under 21 starlet is close to completing another loan move to Primeira Liga outfit Santa Clara.

It’s claimed that an ‘official source’ at Molineux has confirmed the deal for Jordao to return to his homeland for the duration of the 2022/23 campaign.

The report also states thata move for the man who was hailed by journalist Joe Edwards for a ‘brilliant’ goal whilst on loan at Famalicao in 2020 ‘does not include any purchase option’.

The verdict: Beneficial

Following battles with injuries during a stop-start time in the Midlands, allowing Jordao to go away, prove his fitness and obtain regular match action is a smart move from the Old Gold hierarchy.

In addition to Nunes, with Morgan Gibbs-White and Ruben Neves still in situ despite the strong interest, opportunities for the young Portuguese sensation would’ve been few and far between under Bruno Lage this term.

Under contract until 2024 (Transfermarkt), time is still on Jordao’s side to become a Wolves regular, however, this move may need to work well if Lage is going to integrate the versatile central midfielder into his plans moving forwards.

Everton: Big Cody Gakpo transfer news

Everton are competing with Manchester United for Cody Gakpo of PSV Eindhoven, according to The Daily Mail.

The lowdown

Everton have brought in five new players this summer, headlined by £34.2million signing Amadou Onana.

James Tarkowski, Dwight McNeil have also joined permanently, while Conor Coady and Ruben Vinagre have arrived on loan.

Gakpo, now 23, has come through the youth ranks at PSV and is under contract until 2026 after penning an extension in January (via Transfermarkt).

The latest

United manager Erik ten Hag wants to sign both Gakpo and Ajax star Antony.

But they will seemingly face competition for the former, because he ‘also has interest from Everton, among others’.

The Dutchman would apparently cost around £38million, which would make him the second biggest signing in the Toffees’ history.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-7/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The verdict

The fact that United are in for Gakpo, dubbed ‘outstanding’ by Football Oranje editor Michael Bell, almost says it all. This would be a real coup, and a show of ambition too, from Everton.

He’s had an excellent start to the new campaign, scoring three goals and providing four assists in his first six matches.

Gakpo is also a prolific dribbler, recording 130 in total over the course of 2021/22 and ranking second in the league for dribbles per game.

The reigning Dutch Footballer of the Year ‘has everything’, in the words of former Netherlands midfielder Theo Janssen.

Forest pushing to sign Brazilian ‘hero’

Nottingham Forest are pushing to sign Atletico Madrid left-back Renan Lodi on loan this summer, reports transfer window expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Fantastic season

The 24-year-old enjoyed a brilliant campaign under Diego Simeone last season after playing a pivotal role in the side’s domestic and continental competition runs.

The Brazil international played in all of Atletico’s Champions League games, helping the team reach the quarter-finals, in which they were knocked out by Premier League winners Manchester City.

In 29 La Liga appearances, Lodi produced two goals and three assists, cementing himself as an important player for Simeone – whether that be as part of the starting XI or coming off the bench as a substitute.

The Latest: Forest’s interest

After news emerged linking Lodi with a move to Forest, Romano has now shared an update on the progress of a potential deal.

Taking to Twitter, the reliable journalist claimed:

“Nottingham Forest are pushing to sign Renan Lodi on loan from Atletico Madrid. €5m loan fee offered, also buy option could be included – around €30m. #NFFC

“Talks still ongoing on clubs and player side, but Forest are pushing after Atletico changed their position on LB.”

The Verdict: Huge signing

Given Lodi has been considered by the likes of Man City this summer, his arrival at the City Ground would demonstrate a huge change in Forest’s pulling power in the transfer market, having emerged as a big spender as a new Premier League side.

According to FBRef, compared with positional peers across Europe over the past year, the left-back ranks in the 98th percentile for progressive passes received, in the 95th percentile for non-penalty goals and in the 92nd percentile for assists, providing major creative influence from the flank.

The Brazil international, who has been dubbed a ‘hero’ by journalist Sam Leveridge, would make an incredible addition for Steve Cooper’s squad, with Champions League experience an obvious standout on the player’s CV.
